An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth (Paperback): Chris Hadfield An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth (Paperback)
Chris Hadfield
R299 R234 Discovery Miles 2 340 Save R65 (22%) Ships in 11 - 16 working days

Back on the earth after three spaceflights, Chris Hadfield's captivating memoir An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth reveals extraordinary stories from his life as an astronaut, and shows how to make the impossible a reality. This edition contains a new afterword. Colonel Chris Hadfield has spent decades training as an astronaut and has logged nearly 4,000 hours in space. During this time he has broken into a Space Station with a Swiss army knife, disposed of a live snake while piloting a plane, been temporarily blinded while clinging to the exterior of an orbiting spacecraft, and become a YouTube sensation with his performance of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' in space. The secret to Chris Hadfield's success - and survival - is an unconventional philosophy he learned at NASA: prepare for the worst - and enjoy every moment of it. In his book, An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth, Chris Hadfield takes readers deep into his years of training and space exploration to show how to make the impossible possible. Through eye-opening, entertaining stories filled with the adrenaline of launch, the mesmerizing wonder of spacewalks and the measured, calm responses mandated by crises, he explains how conventional wisdom can get in the way of achievement - and happiness. His own extraordinary education in space has taught him some counter-intuitive lessons: don't visualize success, do care what others think, and always sweat the small stuff. You might never be able to build a robot, pilot a spacecraft, make a music video or perform basic surgery in zero gravity like Colonel Hadfield. But his vivid and refreshing insights in this book will teach you how to think like an astronaut, and will change, completely, the way you view life on Earth - especially your own.

Drilling and Blasting of Rocks (Hardcover): Francisco Javier Ayala-Carcedo Drilling and Blasting of Rocks (Hardcover)
Francisco Javier Ayala-Carcedo
R6,712 Discovery Miles 67 120 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Rock breakage with explosives has existed since the seventeenth century when black powder came into use in mining. Since then it has progressed from the invention of dynamite to the use of heavy ANFO. During the past two decades, there have been numerous technical contributions which have brought a better understanding of rock fragmentation with explosives, an improvement in drilling equipment and a noticeable evolution in the development of new explosives and blasting accessories. The Geomining Technological Institute of Spain (ITCE), aware of this progress and of the importance which the breakage process has acquired in mining and civil engineering projects, has ordered the publication of Drilling and Blasting of Rocks.

The purpose of this Handbook is to give basic knowledge of the drilling systems, the types of available explosives and the accessories and the parameters that intervene in blast designing, whether controllable or not; at the same time the objectives and contents contribute to improved safety in mining. The Handbook is meant for all professionals who are involved with explosives in mining operations and civil engineering projects, as well as for students of technical schools.

While the PP and PPK were intended for police work, the Walther P 38 was produced for the Germany military; all three pistols have garnered a formidable international reputation since the 1930s. The innovative Walther PP (Polizeipistole), a double-action semi-automatic pistol intended for the law-enforcement market, became available in 1929 and went on to arm the police of several European countries in the 1930s. Its smaller cousin the PPK, more readily concealed for undercover work but with reduced magazine capacity, was produced from 1931. Intended to replace the P 08 Luger, the Walther P 38 was issued from 1940 and equipped the armed forces of Germany and other countries during and after World War II, but never entirely replaced the Luger in German service. All three pistols went on to have lengthy and varied service across the world after 1945. Both the PP and the PPK remain in production today, while the P 38 re-emerged as the P1 and equipped West German forces from 1963 until 2004, when it was replaced by the P8. In this study, noted authority John Walter assesses the origins, development, use and legacy of these three high-profile semi-automatic pistols, alongside other Walther variants, such as the tiny .25 ACP Modell 9.

An Introduction to Multiphase, Multicomponent Reservoir Simulation, Volume 75 (Paperback): Matthew Balhoff An Introduction to Multiphase, Multicomponent Reservoir Simulation, Volume 75 (Paperback)
Matthew Balhoff
R2,692 Discovery Miles 26 920 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An Introduction to Petroleum Reservoir Simulation is aimed toward graduate students and professionals in the oil and gas industry working in reservoir simulation. It begins with a review of fluid and rock properties and derivation of basic reservoir engineering mass balance equations. Then equations and approaches for numerical reservoir simulation are introduced. The text starts with simple problems (1D, single phase flow in homogeneous reservoirs with constant rate wells) and subsequent chapters slowly add complexities (heterogeneities, nonlinearities, multi-dimensions, multiphase flow, and multicomponent flow). Partial differential equations and finite differences are then introduced but it will be shown that algebraic mass balances can also be written directly on discrete grid blocks that result in the same equations. Many completed examples and figures will be included to improve understanding. An Introduction to Petroleum Reservoir Simulation is designed for those with their first exposure to reservoir simulation, including graduate students in their first simulation course and working professionals who are using reservoir simulators and want to learn more about the basics.

Echoes of the North East Miners - Some last traces of the collieries and tributes to the pitmen (Hardcover): Ken Smith Echoes of the North East Miners - Some last traces of the collieries and tributes to the pitmen (Hardcover)
Ken Smith
R462 Discovery Miles 4 620 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The miners of the North-East, working in the most dangerous of conditions, supplied the coal which fuelled the engines of the Industrial Revolution and provided heating and lighting to millions of homes. Throughout much of County Durham and Northumberland pit communities sprang up because of the need for coal. Mining was fundamental to the development of the region. Illustrated with numerous colour photographs, Echoes of the North-East Miners throws the spotlight on the physical heritage left by the pitmen and their communities, including the numerous memorials and banners which speak so eloquently of their struggles in the face of adversity, their compassion and their enduring spirit of friendship.

Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice (Paperback): Roger Thompson, Rodrigo Peroni, Alex Visser Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice (Paperback)
Roger Thompson, Rodrigo Peroni, Alex Visser
R2,250 Discovery Miles 22 500 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Mining haul roads are a critical component of surface mining infrastructure and the performance of these roads has a direct impact on operational efficiency, costs and safety. A significant proportion of a mine's cost is associated with material haulage and well-designed and managed roads contribute directly to reductions in cycle times, fuel burn, tyre costs and overall cost per tonne hauled and critically, underpin a safe transport system. The first comprehensive treatise on mining haul road design, construction, operation and management, Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice presents an authoritative compendium of worldwide experience and state-of-the-art practices developed and applied over the last 25 years by the three authors, over three continents and many of the world's leading surface mining operations. In this book, the authors: Introduce the four design components of an integrated design methodology for mining haul roads - geometric (including drainage), structural, functional and maintenance management Illustrate how mine planning constraints inform road design requirements Develop the analytical framework for each of the design components from their theoretical basis, and using typical mine-site applications, illustrate how site-specific design guidelines are developed, together with their practical implementation Summarise the key road safety and geometric design considerations specific to mining haul roads Specify the mechanistic structural design approach unique to ultra-heavy wheel loading associated with OTR mine trucks Describe the selection, application and management of the road wearing course material, together with its rehabilitation, including the use of palliatives Develop road and operating cost models for estimating total road-user costs, based on road rolling resistance measurement and modelling techniques Illustrate the approach of costing a mining road construction project based on the design methodologies previously introduced List and describe future trends in mine haulage system development, how mining haul road design will evolve to meet these new system challenges and how the increasing availability of data is used to manage road performance and ultimately provide 24x7 trafficability. Mining Haul Roads - Theory and Practice is a complete practical reference for mining operations, contractors and mine planners alike, as well as civil engineering practitioners and consulting engineers. It will also be invaluable in other fields of transportation infrastructure provision and for those seeking to learn and apply the state-of-the-art in mining haul roads. "This book is the most definitive treatise on mining haul roads ever written [...] There has never been a text that addresses the many facets of mining haul roads on such a scope [...]" From the Foreword by Jim Humphrey, Professional Engineer, Autonomous haulage systems developer and Distinguished Member of the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration.

A study of the Soviet and NATO armored forces that faced each other off in Central Europe in the early Cold War, and how their technology, tactics, and doctrine were all rapidly developed. For 45 years, the most disputed point in the World was the dividing line between East and West in Europe; here the use and development of tanks was key. In this fully illustrated study, author Steve Zaloga, describes how Soviet and NATO tanks were deployed in the early years of the Cold War, and how a generation of tanks such as the Soviet T-44/T-54 and IS-3, British Centurion, US Army M26/M46 Pershing (all developed during World War II) saw extensive service after the war had ended. Initial post-war generation tanks including the Soviet T-54A, T-10 heavy tank, British late-model Centurions, Conqueror, US Army M41, M47, M48 and the French AMX-13 are examined in detail alongside the most important technical trends of the era: the development of shaped-charge anti-tank projectiles, the influence of anti-tank missiles, and the introduction of chemical/nuclear protection and night fighting equipment. The book also considers the influence of post-war doctrine and tactics on tank technology and the effect of regional conflicts such as the 1950 Korean War, the war in Indo-China, and the 1956 Mid East War on tank warfare.

The Psychology of Space Exploration - What Freud Might Have Said (Hardcover): Richard Sherry The Psychology of Space Exploration - What Freud Might Have Said (Hardcover)
Richard Sherry

This short book grapples with two vast questions: the nature of our minds, and our place in the wider universe. It considers how one mutually influences the development of the other. The changes and challenges that will accompany the first humans to leave Earth and travel to another planet, or even further, will not only impact our technical capabilities, but will also represent a watershed moment within our individual and collective human psychology. Many of the problems of resource use, environmental degradation, and waste or destructive processes are contained in the larger process of exploring another environment and planet. But This book also offers a shift in perspective that allows us to consider humanity from an alternative, more holistic perspective, reappraising our own minds both individually and within dynamic social processes. The Psychology of Space Exploration considers our place and purpose in the widest possible perspective, that of space exploration and the natural universe. It doesn't seek to answer these questions, but provides a perspective to explore even further.
