Clinical Pain Management : Acute Pain - Acute Pain (Paperback, 2nd edition): Pamela Macintyre, David Rowbotham, Suellen Walker Clinical Pain Management : Acute Pain - Acute Pain (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Pamela Macintyre, David Rowbotham, Suellen Walker
R1,767 Discovery Miles 17 670 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Acute Pain brings coverage of this diverse area together in a single comprehensive clinical reference, from the basic mechanisms underlying the development of acute pain, to the various treatments that can be applied to control it in different clinical settings. Much expanded in this second edition, the volume reflects the huge advances that continue to be made in acute pain management. Part One examines the basic aspects of acute pain and its management, including applied physiology and development neurobiology, the drugs commonly used in therapy, assessment, measurement and history-taking, post-operative pain management and its relationship to outcome, and preventive analgesia. Part Two reviews the techniques used for the management of acute pain. Methods of drug delivery and non-pharmacological treatments including psychological therapies in adults and children and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation are considered here. Part Three looks at the many clinical situations in which acute pain can arise, and the methods of treatment that may be suitable in each circumstance, whether the patient is young or old, has pain due to surgery, trauma, medical illness or childbirth, or is undergoing rehabilitation. Issues specific to the management of acute pain in the developing world are also covered here.

Maldynia - Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Illness of Chronic Pain (Paperback): James Giordano Maldynia - Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Illness of Chronic Pain (Paperback)
James Giordano
R1,861 Discovery Miles 18 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Whether initiated by injury or disease, induced and sustained by changes in the nervous system, or manifested by society and culture, chronic pain can change one's first-person experience of the body and the world, and ultimately impacts cognitions, emotions, and behavior. Many fine medical books address the causes and management of chronic intractable pain, but rarely do they focus on the ways that such pain creates illness and is experienced and expressed by persons in pain. Maldynia: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Illness of Chronic Pain is about chronic pain that has progressed to a multidimensional illness state in and of itself. Although often dismissed as such, this pain is not imaginary, but rather represents an interaction of neurobiological processes, emotional and behavioral responses, and socio-cultural effects and reactions that become enduring elements in the life and world of the pain patient, and often remain enigmatic for those who provide care. Taking a comprehensive approach that covers science, humanities, and culture, this volume emphasizes the need for researchers, clinicians, and caregivers to regard the ways in which chronic intractable pain becomes illness and affects a patient's biological, social, and psychological states, as well as his or her sense of self. Edited by neuroscientist and neuroethicist James Giordano, this book contains 17 insightful chapters representing medicine, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, ethics, history, art, and the ministry. This exceptional volume also looks at representations of pain in and through the arts, addresses the assignation of values and meaning in pain assessment and treatment, and considers ways to conjoin the sciences and humanities so as to inform the practice of pain medicine and improve the care of those suffering the illness of chronic pain.

R1,854 Discovery Miles 18 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

There have been tremendous recent advances in the pharmacotherapy, dose regimens, and combinations used to treat cancer and for the treatment or prevention of the spread of disease. As a direct result of these advances, there are an increasing number of cancer survivors, although research dealing with chemotherapy-induced pain is still in its early years. Written for pain management specialists, oncologists, pharmacologists, students, and primary care practitioners, Chemotherapy-Induced Neuropathic Pain provides insight into the important area of chemotherapy-induced neuropathic pain. It reviews the basic and clinical research into the normal physiology of pain transmission pathways, neuropathic pain pathology, the chemotherapeutic drug mechanisms of action and adverse effects, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, and drug discovery efforts for treatment. The contributors comprise an impressive list of clinical and basic science experts in the fields of pain mechanisms and pain management. Included are clinical directors of pain clinics and clinical research facilities, directors of large academic pain research laboratories, analgesic drug developers, and presidents of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), Association of Chronic Pain Patients (ACPP), and the British Pain Society (BPS). Through them, the book provides the reader with an exceptional opportunity to acquire a fundamental understanding of the basic concepts related to this topic.

The Way Out - The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Heal Chronic Pain (Paperback): Alan Gordon, Alon Ziv The Way Out - The Revolutionary, Scientifically Proven Approach to Heal Chronic Pain (Paperback)
Alan Gordon, Alon Ziv 1
R598 R483 Discovery Miles 4 830 Save R115 (19%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

A groundbreaking mind-body protocol for chronic pain. Chronic pain is an epidemic. 50 million Americans struggle with back pain, headaches, or some other pain that resists all treatment. Desperate pain sufferers are told again and again that there is no cure for chronic pain. Psychotherapist Alan Gordon was in grad school when he started experiencing chronic pain and it completely derailed his life. He saw multiple doctors and received many diagnoses, but none of the medical treatments helped. Frustrated with conventional pain management, he developed Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a mind-body protocol to eliminate chronic pain. He subsequently founded the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles to bring his treatment to other pain sufferers. PRT is rooted in neuroscience, which has shown that while chronic pain feels like it's coming from the body, in most cases it's generated by misfiring pain circuits in the brain. PRT is a system of psychological techniques that rewires the brain to break out of the cycle of chronic pain. The University of Colorado at Boulder recently conducted a large randomized controlled study on PRT, and the results are remarkable. By the end of the study, the majority of patients were pain-free or nearly pain-free. What's more, these dramatic changes held up over time. The Way Out brings PRT to readers. It combines accessible science with a concrete, step-by-step plan to teach sufferers how to heal their own chronic pain.

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome - Past, Present & Future (Hardcover): Nader D Nader, Ognjen Visnjevac Complex Regional Pain Syndrome - Past, Present & Future (Hardcover)
Nader D Nader, Ognjen Visnjevac
R6,151 Discovery Miles 61 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) is a chronic neuropathic pain disorder that involves one or more extremities with dystrophic changes of the skin, muscle, or bone. CRPS is characterised by constant regional neuropathic pain that does not follow the usual dermatomal distribution or nerve territory. In addition to neuropathic pain, patients suffer from sensory loss, autonomic dysfunction, vasculature changes and motor dysfunction in the region affected. As a debilitating disease with an unclear pathophysiology, patients suffering from this disorder often do not get the adequate level of care or treatment. Until recently, many clinicians believed CRPS was a purely psychiatric ailment and was lumped together with conditions such as conversion disorder. Recent strides in the understanding of responses in both the nervous system and body to trauma has allowed researchers and clinicians to elucidate possible pathophysiology components for this disorder, as well as to better understand the CRPS patient. Currently, CRPS is viewed to be a multiple component disorder activated by the dysfunction of multiple systems. This includes local injury response, inflammatory response, central and peripheral nervous sensitisation, abnormal vasculature changes and psychiatric components. Herein, not only are the pathophysiological mechanisms synthesised from current and past research discussed, but also the available pharmaceutical, interventional, and rehabilitative treatment modalities are reviewed in detail. From the neurophysiology of physical therapy and psychiatric interventions, to concepts in acupuncture, to evidence regarding peripheral and central nerve blocks and implantable devices, and to mechanisms involving supraspinal interventions used to directly manipulate brain circuitry, CPRS treatment options are examined in detail. Furthermore, as evidenced by the diverse and multimodal array of available and emerging treatment modalities, it is clear that CRPS management requires a truly interdisciplinary approach, highlighting this book as a central reference for multiple often-disconnected specialties. Furthermore, the mechanisms of action in each intervention strategy, current evidence base, and gaps in knowledge for management of CRPS are explored with special emphasis on avenues for future research. CRPS is a pain syndrome that has seen an explosion of research in recent decades, due in part to the fairly recent development of internationally formalised diagnostic criteria. However, many questions remain; while some continue to build an evidence base for efficacy and safety of current therapies, others are delving into new pharmaceutical options, experimental therapies, and molecular-level strategies focused on epigenetic manipulation. Moreover, this plethora of emerging CRPS research will surely maintain this syndrome in the forefront of medical research and scientific discovery for the next several decades.

Bodies and Suffering - Emotions and Relations of Care (Hardcover): Ana Dragojlovic, Alex Broom Bodies and Suffering - Emotions and Relations of Care (Hardcover)
Ana Dragojlovic, Alex Broom
R4,047 Discovery Miles 40 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is a critical response to a range of problems - some theoretical, others empirical - that shape questions surrounding the lived experience of suffering. It explores how moral and ethical questions of personal suffering are experienced, contested, negotiated and institutionalised. Bodies and Suffering investigates the moral labour and significance invested in actions to care for others, or in failing to do so. It also explores circumstances - personal, political and social - under which that which is perceived as non-moral becomes moral. Drawing on case studies and empirical research, Bodies and Suffering examines the idea of the suffering body across different cultures and contexts and the experience and treatment of these suffering bodies. The book draws on theories of affect, embodiment, the phenomenology of illness and moralities of care, to produce a nuanced understanding of suffering as being located across the assumed borders of time, space, bodies, persons and things. Suitable for bioethicists, medical anthropologists, health sociologists and body studies scholars, Bodies and Suffering will also be of use on health science courses as essential reading on suffering bodies, mental health and morality and ethics issues.

Pain - A Sociological Introduction (Hardcover): E. Denny Pain - A Sociological Introduction (Hardcover)
E. Denny
R1,504 Discovery Miles 15 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pain in one form or another is probably the most common symptom presented to medical and healthcare professionals. Long a subject of biomedical interest, more recent biopsychosocial theories have extended the study of pain as a concept which is highly individual in the way it is experienced. Today s landscape offers a broad array of approaches to understanding pain and, crucially, to alleviating its impact. This concise and accessible volume aims to make sense of what is at first sight an eclectic mix of theoretical and practical work on pain, from a distinctly sociological perspective. While there has been much quantitative medical research on pain, in exploring sociology s important contributions to this field Elaine Denny offers insight into the world of those living with pain and the meaning it has in their lives. She provides readers with a range of explanations of pain and various influences on the experience of pain, critically analysing competing schools of thought and embedding this work in the everyday practice of providing care. The result is an illuminating volume for students of health and medical professions studying pain, the body, and the sociology of health and illness.
