On Inflection (Hardcover): Patrick O. Steinkruger, Manfred Krifka On Inflection (Hardcover)
Patrick O. Steinkruger, Manfred Krifka
R5,844 Discovery Miles 58 440 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The volume is dedicated to the German linguist Wolfgang Ullrich a oeGustava Wurzel (1940-2001), who has influenced linguistic thought in his work on paradigm-based morphology. All contributors to the volume deal with Wurzela (TM)s work and thinking, who in his theoretical writings focused on the concepts of naturalness, markedness and complexity in human language. The authors discuss diachronic and typological aspects of morphology, i.e. the nature of paradigms, the rise and fall of inflectional morphology, and the development and systems of gender marking, also in regard to the interface with phonology and syntax.

English and Translation in the European Union - Unity and Multiplicity in the Wake of Brexit (Paperback): Alice Leal English and Translation in the European Union - Unity and Multiplicity in the Wake of Brexit (Paperback)
Alice Leal
R1,308 Discovery Miles 13 080 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book explores the growing tension between multilingualism and monolingualism in the European Union in the wake of Brexit, underpinned by the interplay between the rise of English as a lingua franca and the effacement of translations in EU institutions, bodies and agencies. English and Translation in the European Union draws on an interdisciplinary approach, highlighting insights from applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, translation studies, philosophy of language and political theory, while also looking at official documents and online resources, most of which are increasingly produced in English and not translated at all - and the ones which are translated into other languages are not labelled as translations. In analysing this data, Alice Leal explores issues around language hierarchy and the growing difficulty in reconciling the EU's approach to promoting multilingualism while fostering monolingualism in practice through the diffusion of English as a lingua franca, as well as questions around authenticity in the translation process and the boundaries between source and target texts. The volume also looks ahead to the implications of Brexit for this tension, while proposing potential ways forward, encapsulated in the language turn, the translation turn and the transcultural turn for the EU. Offering unique insights into contemporary debates in the humanities, this book will be of interest to scholars in translation studies, applied linguistics and sociolinguistics, philosophy and political theory.

Language, Mind and Epistemology - On Donald Davidson's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1994 ed.): G. Preyer, F. Siebelt, A. Ulfig Language, Mind and Epistemology - On Donald Davidson's Philosophy (Hardcover, 1994 ed.)
G. Preyer, F. Siebelt, A. Ulfig
R6,158 Discovery Miles 61 580 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Professor Donald Davidson is one of the most innovative and influential recent philosophers. Ranging over a variety of topics in the philosophy of language, philosophy of mind and epistemology, his system of thought is unified by his inquiries into the nature of interpretation and understanding the speech and behavior of others. Together with its introduction, Language, Mind and Epistemology examines Davidson's unified stance towards philosophy by joining American and European authors within a collection of essays, published here for the first time. The authors discuss the central topics in Davidson's latest philosophy: his holistic truth-theoretic stance towards meaning and understanding, the epistemology of interpretation and translation, the externalist viewpoint in epistemology, the anti-Cartesian approach in accounting for first person authority, the thesis of anomalous monism, and the holistic conception of the mental.

Literature and its Language - Philosophical Aspects (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022): Garry L. Hagberg Literature and its Language - Philosophical Aspects (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2022)
Garry L. Hagberg
R3,825 Discovery Miles 38 250 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This stimulating volume brings together an international team of emerging, mid-career, and senior scholars to investigate the relations between philosophical approaches to language and the language of literature. It has proven easy for philosophers of language to leave literary language to one side, just as it has proven easy for literary scholars to discuss questions of meaning separately from relevant issues in the philosophy of language. This volume brings the two together in mutually enlightening ways: considerations of literary meaning are deepened by adding philosophical approaches, just as philosophical issues are enriched by bringing them into contact or interweaving them with literary cases in all their subtlety.

Understanding Quotation (Hardcover): Elke Brendel, Joerg Meibauer, Markus Steinbach Understanding Quotation (Hardcover)
Elke Brendel, Joerg Meibauer, Markus Steinbach
R5,083 Discovery Miles 50 830 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Studies on the nature of quotation have become a topic of growing interest among linguists and philosophers of language. What is the function and logical status of quotations? How can an analysis of quotation help to develop a general theory of the semantics-pragmatics interface? This volume is a collection of original papers by leading researchers in the field on such issues and related linguistic and philosophical aspects of quotations.

Non-Ideal Foundations of Language (Paperback): Jessica Keiser Non-Ideal Foundations of Language (Paperback)
Jessica Keiser
R1,303 Discovery Miles 13 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book argues that traditions in philosophy of language have mistakenly focused on highly idealized linguistic contexts. Instead, it presents a non-idealcfoundational theory of language that contends that the essential function of language is to direct attention for the purpose of achieving diverse social and political goals.

A Systems Approach to Language Pedagogy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Akira Tajino A Systems Approach to Language Pedagogy (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Akira Tajino
R2,382 R1,516 Discovery Miles 15 160 Save R866 (36%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume represents the first attempt in the field of language pedagogy to apply a systems approach to issues in English language education. In the literature of language education, or more specifically, second or foreign language learning and teaching, each topic or issue has often been dealt with independently, and been treated as an isolated item. Taking grammar instruction as an example, grammatical items are often taught in a sequential, step-by-step manner; there has been no "road map" in which the interrelations between the various items are demonstrated. This may be one factor that makes it more difficult for students to learn the language organically. The topics covered in this volume, including language acquisition, pedagogical grammar, and teacher collaboration, are viewed from a holistic perspective. In other words, language pedagogy is approached as a dynamic system of interrelations. In this way, "emergent properties" are expected to manifest. This book is recommended for anyone involved in language pedagogy, including researchers, teachers, and teacher trainers, as well as learners.

Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art - Poetic Cartography (Paperback): Simonetta Moro Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art - Poetic Cartography (Paperback)
Simonetta Moro
R1,313 Discovery Miles 13 130 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

Mapping Paradigms in Modern and Contemporary Art defines a new cartographic aesthetic, or what Simonetta Moro calls carto-aesthetics, as a key to interpreting specific phenomena in modern and contemporary art, through the concept of poetic cartography. The problem of mapping, although indebted to the "spatial turn" of poststructuralist philosophy, is reconstructed as hermeneutics, while exposing the nexus between topology, space-time, and memory. The book posits that the emergence of "mapping" as a ubiquitous theme in contemporary art can be attributed to the power of the cartographic model to constitute multiple worldviews that can be seen as paradigmatic of the post-modern and contemporary condition. This book will be of particular interest to scholars in art history, art theory, aesthetics, and cartography.

Modern Grammars of Case (Hardcover, New): John M. Anderson Modern Grammars of Case (Hardcover, New)
John M. Anderson
R2,745 Discovery Miles 27 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book addresses fundamental issues in linguistic theory, including the relation between formal and cognitive approaches, the autonomy of syntax, the content of universal grammar, and the value of generative and functional approaches to grammar. It focuses on the grammar of case relations, signalled by morphological case, prepositions, and word order. Part I offers a critical history of modern grammars of case, focussing on the last four decades and setting this in the context of earlier, including ancient, developments. The subjects considered include the evolution of ideas concerning deep structure and semantic and grammatical relations, and arguments for the maintenance of the traditional central position of case in the grammar. In parts II and III Professor Anderson examines the category of case and central unresolved issues in the grammar of case. The latter include questions relating to the idea of an ontologically-based grammar, particularly the degree to which syntactic categories and relationships are grounded in meaning, and the notion of linguistic creativity. This involves a consideration of the way in which cases may be identified and whether their distribution is determined through semantics. The book sheds new light on the interactions between meaning and grammar and on the structure and development of lexical and grammatical systems. The argument and its far-reaching consequences will be of wide interest to linguists, philosophers and others seeking to understand the workings of language.

Skepticism and Language in Early Modern Philosophy - The Early Linguistic Turn (Hardcover): Danilo Souza Filho Marcondes Skepticism and Language in Early Modern Philosophy - The Early Linguistic Turn (Hardcover)
Danilo Souza Filho Marcondes
R2,325 Discovery Miles 23 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Danilo Marcondes argues that, contrary to a traditional view maintaining that language is not given any central role in early modern philosophy, there was what could be considered an "early linguistic turn" in the seventeenth century, opening a place for the philosophy of language as part of the philosophical system under construction at that period. Skepticism and Language in Early Modern Philosophy: The Early Linguistic Turn also claims that the revival of ancient skepticism at the modern age contributed decisively towards this "linguistic turn" in so far as it attacked the "powers of the intellect" in representing reality and making knowledge possible. Marcondes argues that the concept of language itself becomes crucial to this investigation since during this period it was understood in different ways by different thinkers leading to the central role which will be given to the philosophy of language in contemporary philosophy.

D. Jamieson
R4,713 Discovery Miles 47 130 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a collection of essays in honor of Paul Ziff written by his col leagues, students, and friends. Many of the authors address topics that Ziff has discussed in his writings: understanding, rules and regularities, proper names, the feelings of machines, expression, and aesthetic experience. Paul Ziff began his professional career as an artist, went on to study painting with J. M. Hanson at Cornell, and then studied for the Ph. D. in philosophy, also at Cornell, with Max Black. Over the next three decades he produced a series of remarkable papers in philosophy of art, culminating in 1984 with the publica tion of Antiaesthetics: An Appreciation of the Cow with the Subtile Nose. In 1960 he published Semantic Analysis, his masterwork in philosophy of lan guage. Throughout his career he made important contributions to philosophy of mind in such papers as "The Simplicity of Other Minds" (1965) and "About Behaviourism" (1958). In addition to his work in these areas, his lec tures at Harvard on philosophy of religion are an underground classic; and throughout his career he has continued to make art and to search for the meaning of life in the properties of prime numbers. Although his interests are wide and deep, questions about language, art, and mind have dominated his philosophical work, and it is problems in these areas that provide the topics of most of the essays in this volume."

Language and Phenomenology (Paperback): Chad Engelland Language and Phenomenology (Paperback)
Chad Engelland
R1,352 Discovery Miles 13 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At first blush, phenomenology seems to be concerned preeminently with questions of knowledge, truth, and perception, and yet closer inspection reveals that the analyses of these phenomena remain bound up with language and that consequently phenomenology is, inextricably, a philosophy of language. Drawing on the insights of a variety of phenomenological authors, including Husserl, Heidegger, Merleau-Ponty, Gadamer, and Ricoeur, this collection of essays by leading scholars articulates the distinctively phenomenological contribution to language by examining two sets of questions. The first set of questions concerns the relatedness of language to experience. Studies exhibit the first-person character of the philosophy of language by focusing on lived experience, the issue of reference, and disclosive speech. The second set of questions concerns the relatedness of language to intersubjective experience. Studies exhibit the second-person character of the philosophy of language by focusing on language acquisition, culture, and conversation. This book will be of interest to scholars of phenomenology and philosophy of language.

Moore's Paradox - A Critique of Representationalism (Hardcover): Ulla Schmid Moore's Paradox - A Critique of Representationalism (Hardcover)
Ulla Schmid
R3,625 Discovery Miles 36 250 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Representationalism grasps the meaning and grammar of linguistic expressions in terms of reference; that is, as determined by the respective objects, concepts or states of affairs they are supposed to represent, and by the internal structure of the content they articulate. As a consequence, the semantic and grammatical properties of linguistic expressions allegedly reflect the constitution of the objects they refer to. Questions concerning the meaning of particular linguistic expressions are supposed to be answerable by investigating the metaphysics of the corresponding phenomena. Accordingly, questions of the meaning of psychological concepts, are turned into questions of the nature of psychological states. Concerned with Moore's Paradox, representationalist approaches lead into an investigation of the state of affairs supposedly described by Moore-paradoxical assertions, and thus eventually into investigations concerning the metaphysics of belief. This book argues that this strategy necessarily yields both a wrong solution to Moore's Paradox and an inadequate conception of the meaning of the expression I believe. Turning to the metaphysics of belief is of no use when it comes to understanding either the meaning of the expression 'I believe' or the logic of avowals of belief. Instead, it proposes to focus on the role they play in language, the ways in which they are used in practice.

Teaching and Learning Language and Culture (Paperback): Michael Byram, Carol Morgan Teaching and Learning Language and Culture (Paperback)
Michael Byram, Carol Morgan
R679 Discovery Miles 6 790 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The recognition that cultural learning is an integral part of foreign language learning is quickly taking hold among language teachers. This book offers a practical introduction to the issues by providing descriptions of classroom practice, of curriculum innovation and of experimental courses. These are accompanied by chapters on principles of methodology, on problems in assessing cultural learning and on the implications for teacher education and society at large. Michael Byram is the author of several books on language learning and culture, including Cultural Studies in Foreign Language Education (1988), and Investigating Cultural Studies in Foreign Language Teaching (1991).

Practical Tortoise Raising - and other philosophical essays (Hardcover): Simon Blackburn Practical Tortoise Raising - and other philosophical essays (Hardcover)
Simon Blackburn
R1,741 Discovery Miles 17 410 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Simon Blackburn presents a selection of his philosophical essays from 1995 to 2010. He offers engaging and illuminating discussions of various problems which arise when such familiar notions as representation, truth, reason, and assertion are applied in the sphere of practical thought. It is puzzling how our thinking gets to grip with such things as values and norms. Blackburn explores how we can try to understand what we say in terms of what we are doing when we say it. He investigates how propositions interact with linguistic expressions whose primary function is identified in terms of actions performed in expressing commitments with them, when those commitments are thought of in practical rather than descriptive terms. He broadens his investigation from semantic questions to wider issues of pluralism, pragmatism, philosophy of mind, and the nature of practical reasoning.

Spaces and Meanings - Semantics of the Cultural Landscape (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Olga Lavrenova Spaces and Meanings - Semantics of the Cultural Landscape (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Olga Lavrenova
R1,608 Discovery Miles 16 080 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book examines the problem of relationships between culture and space. Highlighting the use of semiotics of culture as a basic concept of research, it describes the power of the cultural landscape in the context of culture philosophical research. Opening with a discussion of the existence of culture in space, it establishes basic concepts such as noosphere and pneumatosphere. The author acknowledges the early contributions of thinkers like Vladimir Vernadsky and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, who first observed that human activity has become a geological force. Introducing time and space to the discussion, the author then describes the nature of mythological time, eternity versus timelessness, and the semantics of sacred landscapes, space and ritual. These concepts are further developed in discussions of the metaphorical nature of cultural landscape, and the city as metaphor. The book explores semiotics in the cultural landscape, examining the genesis of concepts from geographical images to signs and the axiological dimension of geographical images. In her approach to the idea of cultural landscape as text, she provides detailed examples, including the Russian landscape as agent provocateur of the text, and the culture philosophical aspects and semantics of travel. It establishes the cultural landscape as a phenomenon of culture that is fixed in geographical space with the help of semiotic mechanisms-a specific area of culture of life possessing functional and ontological self-sufficiency. This book appeals readers and researchers interested in the philosophy of culture, semiotics of space, and the philosophical dimensions of culture and geography.

Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought (Hardcover): Paul Magee Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought (Hardcover)
Paul Magee
R2,668 Discovery Miles 26 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Interrogating the much-cherished concept of "poetic thinking," this book focusses on what interview and draft materials reveal of how poets think while in the act of writing. With findings from the cognitive tradition, this book uses performance theory and philosophy to examine this brief, creative window of conscious attention. Suddenness and the Composition of Poetic Thought draws out the implications of this radically curtailed view of consciousness on the poems and other texts we compose. Henrich von Kleist's assertion that "it is not we, but a certain condition of ours which knows" emerges as central to this analysis of the thinking we perform in the very moments of composition. Employing an extensive archive of interview materials with major Anglophone poets, discussing how they think in the moments of composition, the book also provides a lucid account of the links between poetic composition and live performative thinking in the context of the early (pre)textual history of the Ancient Greeks. A transdisciplinary study at the crossroads of philosophy, cognitive psychology, literary studies and linguistics, this book reconceptualizes the wellsprings of new thought in poems and advances our understanding of thinking's complex but vital link to the moment of utterance.

Mind and Language - On the Philosophy of Anton Marty (Hardcover): Guillaume Frechette, Hamid Taieb Mind and Language - On the Philosophy of Anton Marty (Hardcover)
Guillaume Frechette, Hamid Taieb
R4,316 Discovery Miles 43 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Anton Marty (Schwyz, 1847-Prague, 1914) contributed significantly to some of the central themes of Austrian philosophy. This collection contributes to assessing the specificity of his theses in relation with other Austrian philosophers. Although strongly inspired by his master, Franz Brentano, Marty developed his own theory of intentionality, understood as a sui generis relation of similarity. Moreover, he established a comprehensive philosophy of language, or "semasiology", based on descriptive psychology, and in which the utterer's meaning plays a central role, anticipating Grice's pragmatic semantics. The present volume, including sixteen articles by scholars in the field of the history of Austrian philosophy and in contemporary philosophy, aims at exposing some of Marty's most important contributions in philosophy of mind and language, but also in other fields of research such as ontology and metaphysics. As archive material, the volume contains the edition of a correspondence between Marty and Hans Cornelius on similarity. This book will interest scholars in the fields of the history of philosophy in the 19th and 20th centuries, historians of phenomenology, and, more broadly, contemporary theoretical philosophers.

The Routledge Companion to Pragmatism (Hardcover): Scott F. Aikin, Robert B. Talisse The Routledge Companion to Pragmatism (Hardcover)
Scott F. Aikin, Robert B. Talisse
R6,394 Discovery Miles 63 940 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Routledge Companion to Pragmatism offers 44 cutting-edge chapters-written specifically for this volume by an international team of distinguished researchers-that assess the past, present, and future of pragmatism. Going beyond the exposition of canonical texts and figures, the collection presents pragmatism as a living philosophical idiom that continues to devise promising theses in contemporary debates. The chapters are organized into four major parts: Pragmatism's history and figures Pragmatism and plural traditions Pragmatism's reach Pragmatism's relevance Each chapter provides up-to-date research tools for philosophers, students, and others who wish to locate pragmatist options in their contemporary research fields. As a whole, the volume demonstrates that the vitality of pragmatism lies in its ability to build upon, and transcend, the ideas and arguments of its founders. When seen in its full diversity, pragmatism emerges as one of the most successful and influential philosophical movements in Western philosophy.

This book collects research contributions concerning quantitative approaches to characterize originality and universality in language. The target audience comprises researchers and experts in the field but the book may also be beneficial for graduate students. Creativity might be considered as a morphogenetic process combining universal features with originality. While quantitative methods applied to text and music reveal universal features of language and music, originality is a highly appreciated feature of authors, composers, and performers. In this framework, the different methods of traditional problems of authorship attribution and document classification provide important insights on how to quantify the unique features of authors, composers, and styles. Such unique features contrast, and are restricted by, universal signatures, such as scaling laws in word-frequency distribution, entropy measures, long-range correlations, among others. This interplay between innovation and universality is also an essential ingredient of methods for automatic text generation. Innovation in language becomes relevant when it is imitated and spread to other speakers and musicians. Modern digital databases provide new opportunities to characterize and model the creation and evolution of linguistic innovations on historical time scales, a particularly important example of the more general problem of spreading of innovations in complex social systems. This multidisciplinary book combines scientists from various different backgrounds interested in quantitative analysis of variations (synchronic and diachronic) in language and music. The aim is to obtain a deeper understanding of how originality emerges, can be quantified, and propagates.
