The Goddess Beatrice Photo Album - The Divine Comedy and Virgil as Guide: Photo Essay (Paperback): Christopher Alan Byrne The Goddess Beatrice Photo Album - The Divine Comedy and Virgil as Guide: Photo Essay (Paperback)
Christopher Alan Byrne
R994 Discovery Miles 9 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Goddess Beatrice Photo Album is photo essay. It is set to 14 Chapters and has more than 200 art and photograph. The topic of Beatrice is probably best known from Dante Alighieri; who wrote 'The Divine Comedy' in 1321 AD and 'The New Life' in 1295 AD; after a black Italian Church confiscated his worldly possessions, and imposed fines. His story records to a good friday the year 1300 he and Beatrice descend to a six day tour of hades, purgatory and heaven. The work is generally seen allegory to travel in adventure to know God. A Roman by the name of Virgil guided them to all but heaven; while Beatrice as angel provides comments of her throne and rose like existence of paradise. Dante records the creature most perfect and extraordinary. The idea of a reincarnate or destined angel are reviewed in an art format; such as to consider an advanced angel to live out the story again. I provide some 10 art works by the 18th Century French artist Paul Gustave Dore; who is known of Paradise Lost works and metal carving for Edgar Alan Poe. You will discover some 18 photographs from my own digital collection. Dante quotes of Beatrice to appear as leopard and to have husband of lion, and are found of Dore art. The cat to name herself 'Goddess Queen Beatrice' was a gift to me by the Eskimo people; where a spent some 15 years among their tribes. The cat was flown in from a remote village without paved highways. Her birth was foretold by song birds; who named her the 'Bisbuit'. You will find some 4 Chapters to the essay about Mother Nature; including the play of dogs to call her daughter of Nature, Howler Monkeys to call out her name across cages at the zoo and bears like archetype from the unconscious to seat themselves at picnic table. A Chapter considers comments of God about the angel, and the lion to be the Alytna or unrecorded Squire of God. Beatrice is said to have eternal throne of heaven, and is otherwise grown like a rose. You will find extarordinarily photo and art of Jesus Christ, Archangel Gabriel, Michael, Meta-Tron and Peter to visit. See photos of lesson about the Holy Grail, and her assessment of the extreme poverty to properly be able to envision heaven. Find good comedy of her to lead onto the false or untrue Chalice. I include Chapter about her command of ancient language, and to find art of a medieval lady to conduct herself. I have a Chapter about threats and violence to stop or kill such reports. The art work call an Avatar to be an avenging angel; while like a good war story Beatrice states to protect the innocent and delivery blows in metaphor to Haiti like a hell. The new like or earth is known to her story and a Chapter portrays kittens and husband in digital photo. The text closes like a set of railroad tracks onto such a set of metaphors.

R406 Discovery Miles 4 060 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

New York City Talks of 911 by Donna White-Davis copyright 2001 all rights reserved. All photographs copyright Donna White-Davis 2001 The photographs are printed without any editing or adjustment other than a corrective exposure for consistency of publication. Nothing has been changed in the photographs since the day, September 14, 2001 they were taken in NYC from the window of my 2000 JEEP SE Wrangler that had just returned from taking me cross country photographing the beauty, bravery, love and lives of everyday Americans. The JEEP, like my cameras, had by then become an enhancement of myself and soul in much the same way a person adapts to a prosthetic device designed to compensate but for us "Bio-mechanical humans" make our lives and art greater than ever before. Nothing has been changed. Nothing. The billboards and signs are exactly as they were on that day and probably as they were on 911. Photographers often go for the "money shots." There are many. As I said, I cannot shoot tragedy. These aren't the "money shots" but they are the hardworking love shots. I am happy with that. I capture with my camera the bravery, strength, love and life of American, indeed of humanity, who have perservered through disaster and gone on, who survive and eventually thrive. That's what humanity does. It experiences disasters, picks themselves up and goes on. New York City has always been an inspiration for humanity all over the world overcoming the worst of times. That's because New Yorkers come from all over the world. The book is merely one story in that inspiration and it is beautiful to me because it was written by the city herself. I went to New York City to see if I could help. I quit my therapist position on 9/11. I had just returned from driving cross country photographing America and falling in love with the people of our country. I focus on the good, the beautiful, Empire State Games, the athletic, the mountains, small towns and big cities, the music venues of America, the Rodeos and the Fairs. I cannot photograph disasters. A local newspaper asked me once. I said "No, you see my portfolio. I only photograph the beauty." I had spent the days after 911 watching the towers going down over and over in newsreels and felt with a deep emotion hard to explain that that destruction caused by the others to New York was not the story. New Yorkers are strong. I knew that. I am a New Yorker. That destruction was not the story. While driving across country and going through many of the cities of America with music venues I came to realize that cities greet you with their own messages displayed across billboards and neon signs or sounded from the radio stations playing their style. The cities talked to me as I entered them. I knew New York had something to say. I went to New York to hear New York's story. I entered the city on 8th Ave under the elevated train and travelled out from under it onto Broadway and followed Broadway to the 911 site. At each stoplight I photographed exactly what New York was saying to me, to all of us. Here is her story. Donna White-Davis

The Mayan Culture - Past and Present (Paperback): Gary Wonning The Mayan Culture - Past and Present (Paperback)
Gary Wonning
R491 Discovery Miles 4 910 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

It doesn't take long to discover that Belize is a land of contrasts. From the poverty and disarray of the cities to the quiet countryside, many differences are soon found. With poverty and crime running rampant in cities such as Belize City and Belmopan, the traveler has to be constantly aware of his surroundings and protect whatever is being carried. Remember, that camera hanging around your neck is worth more than the average Belizean earns in a year. All that aside, the Mayan people are wonderfully warm people many of whom go out of their way to please visitors. Traveling into the countryside one discovers thatch roof homes with no doors or windows. Because of the warm climate, they can live comfortably all year with a gentle breeze flowing through the open windows and doors. I was struck with the concept that although no utility lines were visible, a lot of homes had a satellite dish in the front yard.

Third Reich Propaganda (Paperback): Bob Carruthers Third Reich Propaganda (Paperback)
Bob Carruthers
R494 Discovery Miles 4 940 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Nazi regime was propelled to power by the new phenomenon of a cohesive mass media communication programme which encompassed press, posters, radio, art and film. The rise and fall of the Third Reich spanned a period of just 25 years and its powerful message was shaped and projected from a vision of German heroism, initially conceived and directed by Adolf Hitler and continued by Dr Josef Goebbels. This authoritative study of the propaganda generated by the Nazi party by Emmy award winning author Bob Carruthers encompasses an in-depth analysis of the surviving films, posters and magazines of the Third Reich.

Before writing, before religious and dogmas, before priests, there were Shamans. The Shaman were the spiritual advisers, healers and sometimes head or leader of their clan. Shaman see beyond the ordinary by a process call Journeying, and Altered State of Consciousness, a dreamlike state where they visit the Spirit World. This book is a collection of photographs of Shaman Art from southwestern America with interpretations by a Shaman. Author Gene Stirm, brings his unique blend of talent and insight to this photographic book of petroglyphs from southeastern California and Nevada. Artist, photographer, writer and Shaman, Gene has applied a Shaman's perspective to ancient artwork left on stone in the desert by early inhabitants of southwestern America. In 2004, after a 30 year career as a graphic artist in Southern California, Gene and his wife moved to Tehachapi, California, where he continued his studies of Native American art and culture and Shamanism. In 2008, he received a Doctor of Shamanism Degree, from ULC Seminary. Gene has been connected with photography, publishing, book design and writing most of his professional life. Through the visual beauty of photographic art and the eloquence of poetry and famous quotes, "One Nation, One Mission, One Promise" celebrates the oath passed down to us through the Charters of Freedom - The Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It inspires us to remember that the United States is not left or right, religious or secular, it is not male or female, nor is it one race over another. The UNITED States of America is rather a country with a mission, an aspiration to live up to that contract with humanity written over two hundred years ago. Each generation is first the heir apparent and then ultimately becomes the passer of the torch to the next, so with each generation we get one step closer to a "more perfect union." It is our contract, it is in our hands, we are the people of the United States of America.

Selected by William Eggleston as Winner The Center for Documentary Studies / Honickman First Book Prize in PhotographyBenjamin Lowy's powerful and arresting color photographs, taken over a six-year period through Humvee windows and military-issue night vision goggles, capture the desolation of a war-ravaged Iraq as well as the tension and anxiety of both U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians. To photograph on the streets unprotected was impossible for Lowy, so he made images that illuminate this difficulty by shooting photographs through the windows and goggles meant to help him, and soldiers, to see. In doing so he provides us with a new way of looking at the war-an entirely different framework for regarding and thinking about the everyday activities of Iraqis in a devastated landscape and the movements of soldiers on patrol, as well as the alarm and apprehension of nighttime raids. "Iraq was a land of blast walls and barbed wire fences. I made my first image of a concrete blast wall through the window of my armored car. These pictures show a fragment of Iraqi daily life taken by a transient passenger in a Humvee; yet they are a window to a world where work, play, tension, grief, survival, and everything in between are as familiar as the events of our own lives. . . . [In] the 'Nightvision' images . . . as soldiers weave through the houses and bedrooms of civilians during nighttime military raids, they encounter the faces of their suspects as well as bystanders, many of whom are parents protecting their children. . . . I hope that these images provide the viewer with momentary illumination of the fear and desperation that is war."-Benjamin Lowy

INTRODUCTION Anne Frank is world famous. Millions of people from all over the world have read her diary. The Anne Frank Foundation promotes Anne Frank and her mental legacy. The travelling exhibition 'Anne Frank - A History for Today' is by far the most visited Dutch exhibition in the world. My interest in the persecution of the Jews in general - and that of Anne Frank in particular - has gradually developed. In 1994-1996, I took part in volunteer projects in the former concentration camps - Sachsenhausen and Dachau - in Germany. During these activities, I was deeply afflicted by the contrast between the present silence in the former concentration camps and the past suffering of the prisoners who had been held captive here during the war. What afflicted me more than anything, however, was the cruelty of the Nazi regime - and the extent of that cruelty. In particular, I found one of the most shocking things as the sight of lampshades made from human skin; understandably, a number of the younger participants did not handle this sight too well. In 2001, I visited the Annex for the first time. The Annex leaves a deep impression on many people, and I was no exception. I could feel the tensions of the persons in hiding, and I realised that Anne had become caught in the Nazis' web: she had been torn away from her everyday world; her life was broken before it could blossom. Anne was interested in culture, religion and science, and she had a keen interest in society at large, being very concerned about everybody's ups and downs, and trials of life; that was why I thought it was so dismal that she had been killed - and only owing to the fact that she was a Jew. The need in me arose to portray the life of Anne Frank - not by means of a biography or a book with old pictures - many of which have been published many times before - but in a different light. Ultimately, I wanted to discover whether there are still remnants of her past life and surroundings lingering in the present. As a historic and photographer, I enjoy combining history and photography. As such, I firstly immersed myself in literature about, and by, Anne Frank. I considered this to be absolutely fundamental so that I could purposively take current pictures of her surroundings. In 2008-2009, I made a photo-report about the residences of Anne Frank (1929-1945). I visited her home addresses in Frankfurt am Main, Aachen, the Merwedeplein in Amsterdam, her place of hiding in the Annex in Amsterdam, and the concentration camps of Westerbork, Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen, where she was imprisoned. I have provided the pictures of short notes explaining the connection with Anne Frank; my recent pictures are an important addition to the many old pictures of Anne Frank. The emptiness left behind by Anne Frank becomes evident when I place a recent picture next to an old picture which depicts her, taken from the same angle. When making the pictures, I took special notice of interesting details and the historical character of the subject; after all, the pictures are the result of personal experiences, which were often quite intense. My pictures show that the traces of her residences are still visible in the (rural) landscape. You can map out your own route along the places which are reminiscent of Anne Frank. I got permission for visiting and taking pictures of the (inside) locations from the organisations concerned. My visits to those locations were carried out respectfully whilst actively taking into consideration the applicable rules of the locations. I hope that my picture book inspires the reader and viewer to delve deeper into the history of the Holocaust and Anne Frank, and that it contributes to the mutual tolerance and understanding between people and cultures.

Tsunami Beaches - A tale of love and loss (Paperback): Gustav Wik Tsunami Beaches - A tale of love and loss (Paperback)
Gustav Wik
R244 Discovery Miles 2 440 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Tsunami Beaches: a tale of love and loss, hope and despair, innocence and passion When you look at a beach and say "this is paradise" or when you look at garbage and say "this is trash" the wording itself has so habituated your mind that the emotion it creates comes between you and what you actually see. To experience the true reality of that beach or trash, you must thus observe beyond words or labels, your heart must touch it. To grasp reality you must disregard outer labels, and let your innermost innocent matter observe what is there, with true love and affection. Love cannot be based on words or labels. It cannot be chased. It must come alive fresh and without motive, with no yesterday or tomorrow. It is only the innocent silent matter of you who knows that love and passion is a whole, without labels or borders. Love is absolute and comes without words of Right or Wrong. Life cannot be experienced without dying. To meet life's true reality you must be ready to die every moment. So, when you read this book, let yourself die to emotions, names and forms, and all what you cling to and grasp for. That dying is a mental surrender to the law of impermanence, the fact that everything is subjected to changes. The yielding to this law will make you touch reality: it will purify you and give innocence back to you. Only the one who is innocent can be truly passionate.

My job as a Security Guard at THE NORWICH STATE MENTAL HOSPITAL was given to me at a time when I had just about run out of money and time. Soon after I had worked there for a while, I began hearing the line from the Leonard Cohen song THE BLUE RAINCOAT that went "You're Living for Nothing, I Hope You are Keeping Some Kind of a Record." Very soon after I heard those words, I took up my camera and began taking photo's and keeping "Some Kind of a Record" My visual and written reflections make up this book, and I find them to be extremely haunting. I dedicate this book and my reflections to all the souls that spent time, as I have in THE ASYLUM. Peter Buckley McClure
