The question 'What is intelligence?' may seem simple to answer, but
the study and measurement of human intelligence is one of the most
controversial subjects in psychology. For much of its history, the
focus has been on differences between people, on what it means for
one person to be more intelligent than another, and how such
differences might have arisen, obscuring efforts to understand the
general nature of intelligence. These are obviously fundamental
questions, still widely debated and misunderstood. New definitions
of intelligence and new factors affecting intelligence are
frequently being described, while psychometric testing is applied

Measurement bias is examined from a general latent variable perspective so as to accommodate different forms of testing in a variety of contexts including cognitive or clinical variables, attitudes, personality dimensions, or emotional states. Practical strategies and examples for dealing with bias detection are provided throughout. An MMPI item data example is provided. Chapter 6 reviews both dichotomous and polytomous item response scales emphasizing estimation methods and model fit evaluation. The use of models in item response theory in evaluating invariance across multiple populations is then described, including an example that uses data from a large-scale achievement test. Chapter 8 examines item bias evaluation methods that use observed scores to match individuals and provides an example that applies item response theory to data introduced earlier in the book. The book concludes with the implications of measurement bias for the use of tests in prediction in educational or employment settings. The scientific study of 'wellbeing' involves both objective and subjective variables. Although reliable and valid measures can be achieved, in a cross-cultural context differences in language and culture present formidable challenges to measurement comparability. This Element begins by describing the behaviour of subjective wellbeing in single cultures, using the theory of homeostasis. Robert A. Cummins then discusses cross-cultural differences in subjective wellbeing, with a focus on measurement invariance as a means of ensuring the validity of comparative results.
