The book contains papers presented at an international colloquium
which has taken place at regular intervals (since 1985) and which
is devoted to the contrasting study of the French language in
Europe and Canada. In 2007 the focus was on the different varieties
of French that can be observed in France and in Canada. Here
specialists from Canada, France and Germany present their research
results in the fields of phonetics and phonology, vocabulary and
lexicography, word formation, history of the French language and
the history of (French) place names in present-day Canada.
Die Beitrage dieses Bandes untersuchen aus einem
angewandt-gesprachsanalytischen Zugriff wissensbezogene
interaktional ausserordentlich komplex. Die Untersuchung von
wissensbezogenen interaktionalen Praktiken, z. B. Praktiken des
Wissenstransfers, eroeffnet neue Perspektiven auf die
institutionelle Praxis. Sie dient damit der - aus angewandter
Perspektive angestrebten - Optimierung wissensbezogener
kommunikativer Prozesse.
A many-faceted exploration of spoken eloquence: how it works, how
it has evolved, and how to tap its remarkable power We all know
eloquence when we hear it. But what exactly is it? And how might we
gain more of it for ourselves? This entertaining and, yes, eloquent
book illuminates the power of language from a linguistic point of
view and provides fascinating insights into the way we use words.
David Crystal, a world-renowned expert on the history and usage of
the English language, probes the intricate workings of eloquence.
His lively analysis encompasses everyday situations (wedding
speeches, business presentations, storytelling) as well as the
oratory of great public gatherings. Crystal focuses on the here and
now of eloquent speaking-from pitch, pace, and prosody to jokes,
appropriateness, and how to wield a microphone. He explains what is
going on moment by moment and examines each facet of eloquence. He
also investigates topics such as the way current technologies help
or hinder our verbal powers, the psychological effects of verbal
excellence, and why certain places or peoples are thought to be
more eloquent than others. In the core analysis of the book,
Crystal offers an extended and close dissection of Barack Obama's
electrifying "Yes we can" speech of 2008, in which the president
demonstrated full mastery of virtually every element of
eloquence-from the simple use of parallelism and an awareness of
what not to say, to his brilliant conclusion constructed around two
powerful words: dreams and answers.
Surveys show that for many people public speaking is the most
frightening experience they will ever face. How do you prepare for
a speaking engagement? What do you need to know about your body,
your voice, the audience, the technology? Maggie Eyre has had many
years' experience as a media trainer, communications consultant and
performer. In Speak Easy, she takes the reader through the complete
process, from initial concept to final delivery. Included in the
book are chapters on body language, voice, health, warming up,
managing your audience, fear, media skills, grooming and learning
your lines. The text is illustrated with many anecdotes and case
studies based on Maggie's own work and experience, with useful tips
and summaries. Practical and authoritative, this is the ideal book
for anyone facing a business presentation or an after-dinner
speech.
Quintilian, born in Spain about 35 CE, became a widely known and
highly successful teacher of rhetoric in Rome. "The Orator's
Education" ("Institutio Oratoria"), a comprehensive training
program in twelve books, draws on his own rich experience. It is a
work of enduring importance, not only for its insights on oratory,
but for the picture it paints of education and social attitudes in
the Roman world.
Quintilian offers both general and specific advice. He gives
guidelines for proper schooling (beginning with the young boy);
analyzes the structure of speeches; recommends devices that will
engage listeners and appeal to their emotions; reviews a wide range
of Greek and Latin authors of use to the orator; and counsels on
memory, delivery, and gestures.
Donald Russell's new five-volume Loeb Classical Library edition
of "The Orator's Education," which replaces an eighty-year-old
translation by H. E. Butler, provides a text and facing translation
fully up to date in light of current scholarship and well tuned to
today's taste. Russell also provides unusually rich explanatory
notes, which enable full appreciation of this central work in the
history of rhetoric.
Investigates the rhetorical practices that contemporary evangelical
Christian women use to confront theological and cultural issues
that stymie deliberation within their communities regarding how to
respond to sexual assault and domestic violence, with an eye toward
both compassion for victims and accountability for perpetrators.
Deliver compelling presentations in any context, from a meeting
with colleagues to a client pitch or keynote address. Whenever you
talk to anyone, you are presenting yourself and your ideas to an
audience. You are giving a presentation. This could be in person,
on the phone, or via videoconference. In any case, both your
content and your delivery contribute to the vitality and
effectiveness of your message. Too many speakers fail to engage
their audience and get their ideas across. Don't be one of them!
Practical Presentation Skills will help you master the three
fundamental elements responsible for a presentation's success:
authenticity, focus, and strength.
Die in diesem Band versammelten Beitrage befassen sich mit
Politischer Theorie, genauer: mit der Geschichte der Politischen
Theorie unter dem spezifischen Aspekt ihres Interesses an Rhetorik
bzw. offentlicher Rede. An ausgewahlten Beispielen politischen
Denkens von Platon bis Luhmann wird versucht, dieses
politiktheoretische Interesse an Rhetorik zu konkretisieren und in
entsprechenden Funktionskonzepten politischen Redens modellhaft
abzubilden.Die Geschichte dieser Modelle macht deutlich, dass sich
in jeder politischen Rhetorik ein bestimmtes Politikverstandnis
vorgangig zur Geltung bringt."
What forces bring ordinary people together in public to make their
voices heard? What means do they use to break through impediments
to democratic participation? Unruly Rhetorics is a collection of
essays from scholars in rhetoric, communication, and writing
studies inquiring into conditions for activism, political protest,
and public assembly. An introduction drawing on Jacques Ranciere
and Judith Butler explores the conditions under which civil
discourse cannot adequately redress suffering or injustice. The
essays offer analyses of "unruliness" in case studies from both
twenty-first-century and historical sites of social-justice
protest. The collection concludes with an afterword highlighting
and inviting further exploration of the ethical, political, and
pedagogical questions unruly rhetorics raise. Examining multiple
modes of expression - embodied, print, digital, and sonic - Unruly
Rhetorics points to the possibility that unruliness, more than just
one of many rhetorical strategies within political activity, is
constitutive of the political itself.
