Reading Hindi: Novice to Intermediate is an innovative collection
of graded readings that are both accessible in language and
engaging in content, specifically designed for adult learners of
Hindi. Ideal for those just starting out in Hindi, the texts
provide culturally rich content written in simple,
level-appropriate language, with a range of activities to reinforce
learning. The graded readings support the learner as they build
their confidence with the language, gradually encountering a wider
range of grammar constructions and vocabulary as the book
progresses. Reading Hindi can be used alongside a main textbook and
is ideal for both class-use and independent study.
"Guess who this is," said Jane. "Guess who this is, " said Sally. "And see the two little ones. Guess who."
The most popular story in all of India and a classic of world literature is summarised in 728 verses in the great epic Mahabharata. Intended for independent study or classroom use for students of various levels who have had a basic introduction to Sanskrit, this fully annotated edition of the Ramopakhyana supplies all the information required for complete comprehension. It contains the Devanagari text, Roman tranliteration, sandhi analysis, Sanskrit prose equivalents to the verses, syntactic and cultural notes, and the English translation, and word-by-word grammatical analysis.
Research shows that early instruction in phonics is the first step
to reading success. Now Step into Reading is introducing a fun and
comprehensive, educationally based phonics program designed to help
kids learn to read, step by step! Developed by a phonics expert,
each box includes eight brief books that cover a specific range of
phonics skills. The boxed sets build on each other, book by book,
and skills are reviewed and reinforced as new ones are
introduced--giving kids the tools they need to crack the code of
letters and sounds.
This diverse anthology of traditional tales from across the
Indonesian archipelago includes short stories, origin myths,
historical legends, poetry, diary entries, news reports and
dialogues. Each of the 20 stories is presented in parallel English
and Indonesian versions on facing pages, making this a great
resource for intermediate language learners. Although written in
the Indonesian national language, the stories hail from many
different ethnic cultures and include a number of female characters
who reveal the challenges faced by women in Indonesian society. In
adopting this approach, the authors make the stories relevant and
engaging for students, as well as provide fascinating windows onto
the regional cultures found among these islands. The stories in
this volume include: "Forbidden Love"--A story from West Kalimantan
that tells of the tragic love between two first cousins who had to
pay a hefty price for their love "Freshwater Dolphins of the
Mahakam River"--A story in the form of blog reports from Borneo
telling the legend of the freshwater dolphins in the Mahakam River
and the challenges faced by the peoples of East Kalimantan "Pitung,
the Hero of Batavia"--A story from Jakarta in which a Robin
Hood-like figure who stole from the rich to pay the poor, played a
heroic role in defending the poor against foreign-run gangs in
colonial times And many more! Authors Katherine Davidsen and Yusep
Cuandani are experienced language teachers who use these texts in
their high school classes at international schools in Jakarta to
fulfill the requirements for International Baccalaureate and
Cambridge IGCSE curriculum courses in Indonesian language and
culture. The stories are graded in terms of difficulty. Each one is
accompanied by a set of discussion questions, a detailed vocabulary
list, cultural notes keyed to the text and online native-speaker
audio recordings. An extensive Indonesian-English glossary is
provided at the back of the book.
Entre-Textes introduces advanced students of French to the richness
of the Francophone world through literature from the Middle Ages to
the 21st century. The course anthology is divided into fourteen
modules, each of which pairs a classical text with a modern one.
Students are guided to read works from different periods of time
and cultural origin and consider how these echo, complement or
question each other. Through comparing and contrasting the texts,
students will develop a new approach to reading literature while
simultaneously reinforcing linguistic and cultural competencies.
Suitable for advanced students of French and featuring texts from
across the French-speaking world, Entre-Textes is an innovative
course anthology with a flexible structure and versatile
methodology.
