"A Reflection of Reality" is an anthology of modern Chinese
short stories designed as an advanced-level textbook for students
who have completed at least three years of college-level Chinese.
While many advanced-level Chinese language textbooks stress only
practical communication, this textbook uses stories from well-known
Chinese authors not only to enhance students' language proficiency,
but also to expose students to the literature, history, and
evolution of modern Chinese society.
The twelve stories selected for this textbook are written by
such contemporary authors as Yu Hua, Wang Anyi, and Gao Xingjian,
and have appeared in various newspapers and magazines in China.
Each story is filled with useful sentence structures, vocabulary,
and cultural information, and is followed by an extensive
vocabulary list, numerous sentence structure examples, grammar
exercises, and discussion questions. The textbook also includes a
comprehensive pinyin index. "A Reflection of Reality "will
effectively improve students' Chinese language skills and their
understanding of today's China.Advanced-level Chinese language

Although his audacious, erotic, and satirical verses survived the
Middle Ages in only a single copy, Catullus has become in our time
a canonical author, ranking in popularity and importance with
Virgil, Horace, and Ovid. And for students and teachers of Latin,
Daniel H. Garrison's "The Student's Catullus" is a definitive
introductory text. This fourth edition, thoroughly revised, makes
Catullus' famous poems more accessible than ever.
A comprehensive reference, "The Student's Catullus" includes the
following features:
- A brief overview of Catullus's life and artistic persona
- A fresh recension of all 113 poems
- A commentary in English on each poem, explaining difficult points
of Latin and salient aspects of Catullus' artistry
- A Who's Who of the people in Catullus' poems
- An explanation of Catullan meters
- A glossary of literary terms used in the commentary
- A complete Latin-English Catullan vocabulary
- Six reference maps
New to this fourth edition are dozens of additional notes to aid
comprehension, more nuanced definitions in the vocabulary list, and
amplified information in the appendices. In addition, Garrison has
expanded his introduction to include tips for students and
teachers. Drawing on years of classroom experience, Garrison urges
readers to avoid rote translation and instead engage thoroughly
with the poet's delightful language, syntax, structure, and rhythm.

First published in 1913, this book contains an adaptation of Ein
Schloss in den Ardennen by the German author Friedrich Wilhelm von
Hacklander (1816-77). Aimed at school pupils, the text is presented
in German with phonetic transcriptions of difficult words at the
foot of each page. A short biography of the author, questions on
the narrative and grammatical exercises are also included. This
book will be of value to anyone with an interest in German
literature and the history of education.
Saaq al-Bambuu (The Bamboo Stalk) by Kuwaiti novelist Saud
al-Sanousi provides students at the intermediate-advanced Arabic
language level the opportunity to engage with an award-winning work
of contemporary fiction. This abridged version has been approved by
the author, authenticating the richness of a text that offers
students the means to develop vocabulary and reading fluency while
sensitizing them to the stylistics of the language. The novel is a
coming-of-age story of a half-Filippino, half-Kuwaiti teen who
returns to his father's Kuwait. There, he explores his own identity
as a poor Filipino in a culture he does not know well and receives
a mixed welcome from his own wealthy relatives. Universal concepts
of identity, faith, belonging, poverty/wealth, and otherness are
explored through a poetic narrative and engaging plot that will
keep students captivated from the first line to the very last page.
Included within the book are chapter exercises that develop
linguistic and cultural competencies, a short biography of the
author, and glossaries of literary terms and devices. As with Laila
Familiar's Sayyidi wa Habibi, this authorized version of the
abridged text by a contemporary Arabic author will be warmly
embraced by college and university students of Arabic as well as by
independent learners.
