For nearly thirty years, John Haining (under the pen name
'Countryman's Steam') contributed a vast range of designs and
constructional articles to the pages of Model Engineer magazine.
These covered all types and sizes of engine:- steam traction
engines for the road and field and standing engines, and the way
they worked with ploughs, cider mills, elevators and threshing
machines. The articles were always popular with those seeking steam
experiences away from the railways, and as a result the author
built up an authoritative reputation for the extent of his
knowledge in this area. As a technical consultant to Model
Engineer, the author built up an enviable reputation for the extent
of his knowledge and the immense trouble he took to reply fully and
clearly to readers' queries and problems. This book was originally
written in 1982 to expound on some of the problems encountered by
engine owners, both in full size and in small scale. It places
particular emphasis on design and construction, and the care of
steel boilers, with formulae and data used by the top firms. A new
and enlarged edition was extended to cover more fully the design,
construction and care of steel boilers in general, with formulae
and data used by firms of repute. An extra chapter was included
covering the author's designs of three vertical boilers, the
Sentinel, the Caradoc and a 3 inch scale version.
The Roads of Roman Italy offers a complete re-evaluation of both the evidence and the interpretation of Roman land transport. The book utilises archaeological, epigraphic and literary evidence for Roman communications, drawing on recent approaches to the human landscape developed by geographers. Among the topics considered are: * the relationship between the road and the human landscape * the administration and maintenance of the road system * the role of roads as imperial monuments * the economics of road construction and urban development. eBook available with sample pages: 0203062418

After his last book Escapes, Stefan Bogner returns to the Alps with
this illustrated book. This time not only did he photograph
particular routes, but he looked for the ideal tour through the
Alps: 3 countries, 14 passes - the perfect little escape for 4
days. Different from Bogner s photographs in Escapes or Curves,
where he just presents dreamlike empty streets, Porsche Drive
focuses on the journey in Porsche models such as Porsche 906,
Porsche 911, Porsche 918 and more. Stefan Bogner drives his own
Porsche 911 1970 ST. Apart from Bogner's photographs, Porsche Drive
offers information on each route and height profile. Thus you can
follow Bogner's itinerary on a long weekend.
Practical Fabrication and Assembly Techniques guides enthusiasts
through the most essential processes for assembling a
high-performance engine, car, or motorcycle. Tasks like fabricating
mounts for fuel pumps or ignition boxes, selecting fasteners and
hardware for securing components, and plumbing brake and fuel
systems are among the many topics covered.
Great Small Fiats is a tribute to some of the best small Fiats ever
produced. In deciding which models to include in this book, Phil
Ward concentrated on three criteria - greatness, size and emotion.
Where size is an easy parameter to qualify, greatness is more
complicated because it is a combination of of both the
manufacturer's and the public's opinion. A car that is highly
regarded by the public may not have been a commercial success and
vice versa. A truly great car is one that works well for both
parties. Emotion may be considered to be an element of greatness in
that the public's 'love' for a car is a fantastic benefit for a
manufacturer and must be treasured. Fiat have made the mistake of
'improving' an icon on several occasions only to find that public
opinion went against them. Fortunately Fiat has been magnanimous
enough to respond by giving the car-buying public more of what it
wants. As long as they continue to do so then Fiat's reputation as
the world's greatest small car manufacturer is set to continue. The
author chose the Topolino as the starting point, as it fulfils all
the criteria, and was the first Fiat built in the late 1930s to
satisfy the Italian public's new-found desire for mobilisation. The
old conventions of car production were turned upside down with the
arrival of the 600 which revolutionised car production techniques
and maximised on passenger space and performance at minimal cost.
These principles continued via a succession of models which include
the 500, 850, 126, 127 through to more recent models like the
Cinquecento and Seicento. Running in parallel with these cheeky
Fiats, this book covers a range of slightly larger cars that were
built in huge numbers. Though rather staid in appearance, the 1950s
Millecento was family transport for millions of Italians covering
three decades, four when the Indian-built cars are included.
Similarly the 128, Panda and Uno were 'the' Italian small cars of
the '70s, '80s and '90s. Nuova Panda carries the banner through to
recent models.
Each Haynes manual provides specific and detailed instructions for
performing everything from basic maintenance and troubleshooting to
a complete overhaul of the machine, in this case the Yamaha TY50,
80, 125 & 175, model years 1974 through 1984. Do-it-yourselfers
will find this service and repair manual more comprehensive than
the factory manual, making it an indispensable part of their tool
box. A typical Haynes manual covers: general information;
troubleshooting; lubrication and routine maintenance; engine top
end; engine lower end; primary drive, clutch and external shift
mechanism; transmission and internal shift mechanism; engine
management system; electrical system; wheels, tires and drivebelt;
front suspension and steering; rear suspension; brakes; body, and
color wiring diagrams. An index makes the manual easy to navigate.
It was brash and it was loud - the 1980s put paid to the glumness
of the '70s and nowhere was that more obvious than in the cars we
drove, which took a quantum leap in durability, performance,
equipment and style. They had to: Japanese quality and European
design were luring away ever more customers. Features such as fuel
injection, turbochargers, computer-controlled systems and
four-wheel drive became commonplace. This was also the decade that
brought us the people-carrier and the off-roader, new classes of
car that radically reshaped family transport. Meanwhile,
seatbelt-wearing became law, the M25 opened, speed cameras appeared
and ram-raiding was the new motoring nemesis. Relive everything
car-related in Britain in the 1980s with Giles Chapman.
This is the essential guide to all Jaguar XJ models from 2003 to
2009. An important read for any potential owner, but also a
constant reference guide to keep with you when viewing a car. It
will help you identify the model that suits you, what to look for
when inspecting a car, and will provide you with all the necessary
procedures to ensure the car is actually what it appears to be. It
will identify some of the pitfalls to avoid, help you decide on
exactly how to buy - from a dealer, private sale, or auction - and
how to get the best possible car for your money. The X350s are the
last with what many would call 'traditional Jaguar' styling, yet
they embody many technological advances. Therefore it is even more
important to study the subject closely and inspect cars thoroughly
before purchase. This book is the perfect pocket guide for that
purpose.
Perhaps the most far-reaching of the many changes wrought on the
military by the First World War was the mechanisation of the armed
services. After many centuries of use by the Army for patrols and
communications, the trusty horse was finally supplanted by the
newfangled motorcycle. This process of mechanisation gathered pace
during the interwar years and in particular for the military
motorcycle between 1925 and 1939. By the outbreak of the Second
World War the motorcycle had become an important part of the
military inventory and was deemed 'suitable for WD (War Department)
requirements'. When it was first published in 1995, this fully
illustrated book was unique in looking at all military motorcycles
of British origin known to have been tested mainly by the
Mechanical Warfare Experimental Establishment (later called the
Mechanisation Experimental Establishment). This edition is fully
revised and updated and includes three new chapters, covering
standard parts, bike markings and paint schemes.
