Die Zahl der Ehescheidungen in der alten Bundesrepublik liegt in den letzten Jahren konstant tiber 125. 000 pro Jahr. Je nach benutztem Schiitzverfahren werden von 100 heute geschlossenen Ehen im Laufe der Zeit 25 bis 50 wieder geschieden. Ftir die USA gehen Schiitzungen davon aus, daB bis zu 2/3 aller heute geschlossenen Ehen in einer Scheidung enden (Martin/Bum pass 1989: 49). Pro Jahr werden circa 100. 000 Kinder in den alten Bundes liindern dadurch zu sogenannten Scheidungswaisen. Da (noch?) eine relativ groBe Wiederverheiratungsneigung bei den Geschiedenen besteht, ergeben sich durch diese Entwicklungen giinzlich neue Familienstrukturen. Primiire Bindungen werden instabil, neue Beziehungsmuster werden moglich. Die noch als Regel zu betrachtende Kernfamilie konnte sich bald als die Aus nahme erweisen (vgl. etwa flir die USA Demo/Acock 1991). Diese Entwicklungen, die hiiufig zur Charakterisierung der heutigen Si tuation der Familie und ihres Wandels dienen, veriindern eine der grund legenden sozialen Institutionen moderner Gesellschaften in wesentlichen Elementen. Auslosendes Ereignis der skizzierten Trends und Veriinderungen ist dabei die Ehescheidung. Wiihrend gegen Ende des letzten Jahrhunderts die Zahl der Ehescheidungenje 10. 000 Einwohner in Deutschland noch zwi schen 1. 3 und 1. 7 schwankte, liegen diese Ziffern gegen Ende der achtziger Jahre dieses Jahrhunderts bei circa 20 Scheidungenje 10. 000 Einwohner pro Jahr. Die Steigerung der Scheidungsziffern nahm dabei -wenn man von den allerdings betriichtlichen Schwankungen nach den Weltkriegen und als Folge der Reform der Scheidungsgesetze 1977 absieht -fast linear zu.
