Housing, Social Policy and Difference - Disability, Ethnicity, Gender and Housing (Hardcover): Malcolm Harrison, Cathy Davis Housing, Social Policy and Difference - Disability, Ethnicity, Gender and Housing (Hardcover)
Malcolm Harrison, Cathy Davis
R2,320 Discovery Miles 23 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Issues of 'difference' are on the agenda right across the social sciences, and are encountered daily by practitioners in policy fields. A central question is how the welfare state and its institutions respond to impairment, ethnicity and gender. This book provides an invaluable overview of key issues set in the context of housing. Touching on concerns ranging from minority ethnic housing needs to the housing implications of domestic violence, this broad-ranging study shows how difference is regulated in housing. It deploys a distinctive theoretical perspective which is applicable to other aspects of the welfare state, and bridges the agency/structure divide. Housing, social policy and difference: brings disability, ethnicity and gender into the centre of an analysis of housing policies and practices; offers a new approach to housing, informed by recent theoretical debates about agency, structure and diversity; develops the ideas of 'difference within difference' and 'social regulation'; looks beyond the concerns of postmodernism to create an original account of difference and structure within the welfare state. The book will be an important text for students and researchers in housing, social policy, planning, urban studies, sociology, disability studies, gender studies and ethnic relations. It will also interest practitioners committed to greater equalities of opportunities and a fairer society.

Social Services Disrupted - Changes, Challenges and Policy Implications for Europe in Times of Austerity (Hardcover): Flavia... Social Services Disrupted - Changes, Challenges and Policy Implications for Europe in Times of Austerity (Hardcover)
Flavia Martinelli, Anneli Anttonen, Margitta Matzke
R5,007 Discovery Miles 50 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Public social services are a key component of the welfare state in most of Europe, although their development trajectories, coverage and legal status still vary considerably among countries. How such services are provided, and for whom, impacts significantly on social and territorial cohesion, gender balance and, ultimately, on the development of any society. However, while much is discussed and written about social policy and welfare systems, social services remain somewhat neglected. Although they have gained a stronger foothold in national legislations and social policy agendas, their status remains weaker compared to education or health. Moreover, because of the austerity measures following the 2008 financial crisis, they have been subject to cuts and reorganisation, which have brought about significant disruption. This book revives the discussion on public social services and their redesign, with a focus on services relating to care and the social inclusion of vulnerable groups. Conveying the main findings of the EU-funded COST Action IS1102 Social Services, Welfare States and Places, the book provides rich information on the changes that occurred in the organisation and supply of public social services over the last thirty years in different European places and service fields. Despite the persisting variety in social service models, three shared trends emerge: public sector disengagement, 'vertical re-scaling' of authority and 'horizontal re-mix' in the supply system. The consequences of such changes are evaluated from different perspectives - governance, social and territorial cohesion, labour market, gender - and are eventually deemed 'disruptive' in both economic and social terms. The policy implications of the restructuring are also explored. The book will appeal to a broad audience: researchers and students, policy-makers, civil servants, service providers, social workers and users' organisations. Contributors include: S. Adam, A. Anttonen, A. Bagnato, S. Barilla, A. Bernat, I. Bode, P. Brokking, B. Deusdad, D. Dierckx, R. Fluder, L. Fraisse, M. Garcia, J.L. Gomez-Barroso, E. Gubrium, L. Haikioe, I. Harslof, J. Havlikova, J. Marco Buti, Daniele Franco, Lucio R. Pench
R5,732 Discovery Miles 57 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book analyses the main problems in the functioning of the welfare state and possible actions for its reform. Focusing on the European Union, it looks at the achievements of and challenges to the welfare state as we enter the 21st century. In addition, they analyse issues such as: * economic effects of the welfare state * mechanisms for improving incentives in the welfare state * implications of Economic and Monetary Union for the welfare state * options in pension funding * impact of ageing on the pensions systems in the European Union * detailed projections of social expenditure The Welfare State in Europe will be essential reading for those working in the areas of public administration and finance, European studies, social policy, economics and political science. In its provision of policy suggestions it will also be welcomed by policymakers and government advisers.

Facing the World Without Love, How the Welfare and Foster Care System Has Destroyed Our Society's Throwaway Children... Facing the World Without Love, How the Welfare and Foster Care System Has Destroyed Our Society's Throwaway Children (Hardcover)
Ron Huber
R580 Discovery Miles 5 800 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

From the time he began his life as a "throwaway child," clearly, some crucial pieces of Ron Huber's life had been missing: Parents. Love. Self-esteem. A helping hand. Cruelly abandoned at an early age by his alcoholic parents, Ron and his brother, Vic, were left to rot in a poisoned, rat-infested slum with no food, heat, or electricity. For the next long decade, Ron and Vic suffered unbearably as they were shipped from one brutal foster care home to another. Not soon enough it was time for Ron to break loose from the chains of the mental and physical restraints of the welfare and foster care system and strike out on his own with newfound and well-deserved hope to halt the runaway turbulence of his young life. From a throwaway child to a top federal government executive, this is Ron Huber's remarkable true story of bravery, gallantry and recovery from a system which today poses a national crisis. Foster care provides for half a million "nowhere to go" children and, of that half a million, a shocking 80 percent of the children end up in prisons. This account of Ron's life sends a powerful message to those unfortunate victims of a foster home care existence today of unswerving hope and optimism that one day you will find a world WITH unquestionable love to wipe away all the tears of your saddened, inhumane, hurt, your torturous loneliness, your savage abuse, and the tears from your humiliating defeats. It will come.

Per Tore Granrusten, Kjell-Age Gotvassli, Ole Fredrik Lillemyr, Kari Hoas Moen
R3,065 Discovery Miles 30 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The focus of this book is on different aspects of leadership and governess for learning in the early childhood education and care (ECEC) sector, which serves children aged 1-5 years. Internationally, the discourse on the ECEC sector is interwoven with the discourse on early intervention, where ECEC is viewed as laying the foundation for lifelong learning, eliminating child poverty, and fostering social inclusion within an increasingly diverse population.

Welfare Measurement, Sustainability and Green National Accounting - A Growth Theoretical Approach (Hardcover): Thomas Aronsson,... Welfare Measurement, Sustainability and Green National Accounting - A Growth Theoretical Approach (Hardcover)
Thomas Aronsson, Per-Olav Johansson, Karl-Gustaf Loefgren
R3,757 Discovery Miles 37 570 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

One of the basic issues of accounting is to augment, or extend the conventional net national product measure so as to obtain a better indicator of welfare. This book extends the usual analysis of social accounting by including technological change, externalities and uncertainty. This important new book analyses welfare measurement, sustainability and 'green accounting' within general equilibrium models. A large part of the book is devoted to welfare measurement in the presence of technological change and external effects which complicate 'green accounting' to a considerable extent. In addition to environmental externalities, the authors also discuss external effects arising from investments in human capital and their implications for welfare measurement. Other areas examined are welfare measurement under uncertainty and examples of cost-benefit analyses of environmental and other policies. The book will be required reading for graduate students and professional economists interested in macroeconomics, environmental and resource economics.

Getting Zambia to Work (Hardcover, New): Chisanga Puta-Chekwe Getting Zambia to Work (Hardcover, New)
Chisanga Puta-Chekwe
R1,277 Discovery Miles 12 770 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Getting Zambia to Work examines some critical issues in Zambia's recent history, including the country's unhealthy dependency on 'foreign largess' and their implications for national self-assertion, social self-reliance and sustainable development. The book suggests practical and simple ways in which Zambia could lift itself out of its current underdevelopment trap. Though most of the proposed solutions do not require huge investments in new money, they do however require improved transparency and accountability in the use of existing resources. ________________________________________ Chisanga Puta-Chekwe was born at Nchanga in the Copperbelt Province of Zambia. Gender and Violence in the Middle East (Hardcover): David Ghanim Gender and Violence in the Middle East (Hardcover)
David Ghanim
R1,545 Discovery Miles 15 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Gender and Violence in the Middle East" argues that violence is fundamental to the functioning of the patriarchal gender structure that governs daily life in Middle Eastern societies. Ghanim contends that the inherent violence of gender relations in the Middle East feeds the authoritarianism and political violence that plague public life in the region. In this societal sense, men as well as women may be said to be victims of the structural violence inherent in Middle Eastern gender relations. The author shows that the varieties of physical violence against women for which the Middle East is notorious--honor killings, obligatory beatings, female genital mutilation--are merely eruptions of an ethos of psychological violence and the threat of physical violence that pervades gender relations in the Middle East.

Ghanim documents and analyzes the complementary roles of both sexes in sustaining the system of violence and oppressive control that regulates gender relations in Middle Eastern societies. He reveals that women are not only victims of violence but welcome the opportunity to become perpetrators of violence in the married female life cycle of subordination followed by domination. The mother-in-law plays a crucial role in supporting the structure of patriarchal control by stoking tensions with her daughter-in-law and provoking her son to commit sanctioned violence on his wife. The author applies his deep analysis of gender and violence in the Middle East to illuminate the motivational profiles of male and female political suicidalists from the Middle East and the martyrological adulation that they are accorded in Middle Eastern societies.

General Equilibrium and Welfare (Hardcover, illustrated edition): John Creedy General Equilibrium and Welfare (Hardcover, illustrated edition)
John Creedy
R3,515 Discovery Miles 35 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This major new book provides an accessible and innovative introduction to general equilibrium analysis and associated welfare economics. In this distinct and refreshing treatment, John Creedy develops a simple two sector model using only diagrams and simple mathematics to ensure that this treatment will be accessible to students. The analysis of exchange and the gains from trade in the context of price taking behaviour are the subject of the first part of the book. Special attention is given to general equilibrium supply and demand curves and, in contrast with partial equilibrium treatments, the possibility of multiple equilibria. Trading at disequilibrium prices, the influence of the numbers of traders and bargaining solutions are then discussed before production is added to the analysis and the two sector model constructed. General Equilibrium and Welfare will be welcomed for its accessible introduction to General Equilibrium analysis and for the strong emphasis it places on exchange, which is closely in line with the work of early neoclassical writers such as Jevons, Walras, Edgeworth and Wicksell.

Fiscal Policy and Social Welfare - An Analysis of Alternative Tax and Transfer Systems (Hardcover): John Creedy Fiscal Policy and Social Welfare - An Analysis of Alternative Tax and Transfer Systems (Hardcover)
John Creedy
R3,920 Discovery Miles 39 200 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In Fiscal Policy and Social Welfare John Creedy examines alternative tax and transfer systems and their redistributive effects.Drawing on original research, this volume concentrates on modelling tax structures and their implications for social welfare and income distribution. After reviewing various inequality and tax progressivity measures, as well as social welfare functions, the discussion moves systematically from a framework with fixed labour supplies to one in which labour supplies respond to changes in the tax system. Attention is given to taxes in a multi-period context, including the treatment of pension schemes. Finally, the analysis is extended to a general equilibrium framework involving many individuals. Extensive use is made of numerical examples and diagrams. Researchers, students and policy makers will welcome this rigorous and consistent treatment of alternative tax and transfer systems and their effects on social welfare, income distribution and tax progressivity, in both partial and general equilibrium contexts.

Welfare Policy Under New Labour - The Politics of Social Security Reform (Hardcover): Andrew Connell Welfare Policy Under New Labour - The Politics of Social Security Reform (Hardcover)
Andrew Connell
R4,367 Discovery Miles 43 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

How much freedom of action does an ambitious reforming party have as it moves from opposition to government? Drawing on original research and first-hand interviews, Andrew Connell analyzes the development of welfare reform policy following New Labour's ascent to power in 1997 to show how ideas, actors, and structures can constrain policy options. He looks at the contrasting ideas of Frank Field, Minister for Welfare Reform in 1997-8, and of Gordon Brown, and shows how Brown's approach eventually came to prevail. The book also includes a unique exposition of Field's political and social philosophy, showing how his consistent Christian socialist beliefs influenced his work as Minister for Welfare Reform. "Welfare Policy under New Labour" will be essential reading for scholars of contemporary politics and social policy and for those interested in New Labour and welfare reform.

Keep On Fighting - The Life and Civil Rights Legacy of Marian A. Spencer (Hardcover): Dorothy H Christenson Keep On Fighting - The Life and Civil Rights Legacy of Marian A. Spencer (Hardcover)
Dorothy H Christenson; Introduction by Mary E Frederickson
R1,578 Discovery Miles 15 780 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Marian Alexander Spencer was born in 1920 in the Ohio River town of Gallipolis, Ohio, one year after the "Red Summer" of 1919 that saw an upsurge in race riots and lynchings. Following the example of her grandfather, an ex-slave and community leader, Marian joined the NAACP at thirteen and grew up to achieve not only a number of civic leadership firsts in her adopted home city of Cincinnati, but a legacy of lasting civil rights victories. Of these, the best known is the desegregation of Cincinnati's Coney Island amusement park. She also fought to desegregate Cincinnati schools and to stop the introduction of observers in black voting precincts in Ohio. Her campaign to raise awareness of industrial toxic-waste practices in minority neighborhoods was later adapted into national Superfund legislation. In 2012, Marian's friend and colleague Dot Christenson sat down with her to record her memories. The resulting biography not only gives us the life story of remarkable leader but encapsulates many of the twentieth century's greatest struggles and advances. Spencer's story will prove inspirational and instructive to citizens and students alike.

Health Care (Hardcover): Ilan Stavans Health Care (Hardcover)
Ilan Stavans
R1,840 Discovery Miles 18 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Ilan Stavans has amassed a collection of cutting-edge articles that inform readers about how Latinos navigate both the mainstream medical arena and culturally specific healing traditions. This work highlights the myriad problems Latinos face in becoming fully acculturated consumers of health care. Its series of chapters by expert contributors bridges the communication gap between mainstream medical professionals who need to understand the Latino worldview and Latinos that need to adapt to the puzzling complexity of providers and insurers that make up the American health care system. Backed by research using quantitative methods and other techniques, Health Care's seven chapters cover topics ranging from infant care to teenage dating and sexual mores to prescription medication use by older adults. Much of the coverage focuses on problems of access and the ways in which Latinos move between mainstream health care, and the world of traditional remedies provided by botanicas (shops specializing in herbs and other healing items) and curanderos (folk healers). Includes seven chapters on the major issues concerning Latino access to quality health care in the United States 18 contributors-noted scholars providing their insights under the editorial direction of Ilan Stavans

Selling Welfare Reform - Work-First and the New Common Sense of Employment (Hardcover): Frank Ridzi Selling Welfare Reform - Work-First and the New Common Sense of Employment (Hardcover)
Frank Ridzi
R3,071 Discovery Miles 30 710 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The 1996 Welfare Reform Act promised to end welfare as we knew it. In Selling Welfare Reform, Frank Ridzi uses rich ethnographic detail to examine how new welfare-to-work policies, time limits, and citizenship documentation radically changed welfare, revealing what really goes on at the front lines of the reformed welfare system. Selling Welfare Reform chronicles how entrepreneurial efforts ranging from front-line caseworkers to high-level administrators set the pace for restructuring a resistant bureaucracy. At the heart of this remarkable institutional transformation is a market-centered approach to human services that re-framed the definition of success to include diversion from the present system, de-emphasis of legal protections and behavioral conditioning of poor parents to accommodate employers. Ridzi draws a compelling portrait of how welfare staff and their clients negotiate the complexities of the low wage labor market in an age of global competition, exposing the realities of how the new "common sense" of poverty is affecting the lives of poor and vulnerable Americans.
