It is an absolute privilege and pleasure to have the opportunity to
grow and develop, influence and inspire the intelligent young
footballer and it is a tremendously exciting and rewarding process.
In reality it can be very challenging and frustrating at times but
throughout my journey I have learned many life lessons that I want
to share to help you influence and inspire others to grow and
develop. Football, the beautiful game has been so good to me,
filled with some outstanding memories and experiences...it is my
time to give something back. When talking to a fellow and respected
grassroots coach about my intent to write this book and share my
story, he said "I wish there had been something like that around
when I started." That was all the inspiration that I needed. Give
yourself the permission to pause to read my story. I hope that it
inspires and influences you. Ultimately, enjoy the experience and
the privilege of developing the intelligent young footballer.
The District Railway was designed by a committee with impractical
aspirations. A banking crisis and collapse of one of its
contractors during construction created long term financial
difficulties. It was complicit in completing the long hoped for
`inner circle' railway that was a financial disaster and very
difficult to operate. Its directors were for many years ineffectual
and its managing director, though getting off to a good start,
became complacent and distracted and failed to pursue with vigour
the policies that were needed. Even the American entrepreneurs, who
arrived with the twentieth century, had their work cut out trying
to make something of a line that rarely paid dividends and had
never been far from bankruptcy. In all this, the railway and its
operational staff provided good and useful services to important
parts of London or the suburbs it helped to shape. Why a railway
like this found itself in such a sorry state is part of the story
covered in this definitive volume. Well illustrated in colour and
black and white.

David Fathers presents a unique and richly illustrated guide to the
London section of the Thames Path, newly updated to reflect the
city's ever-changing landscape. The iconic path, which stretches
from the lost floodplains of Richmond all the way  to the
Thames Barrier, is a panoramic 40-mile walk through 2000
years of London's history. From the old docks and wharves that
primed the Industrial Revolution, through the heart of British
Government, Monarchy and Church to the City of London that took its
very existence from the river. From the site of the Putney Debates
at St Mary's Church to Wren's mighty baroque cathedral of St
Paul's. From the great Victorian engineering works of Sir Joseph
Bazalgette and his attempts to clean up a polluted London and the
river to the Thames Barrier seeking to protect huge parts of London
from rising sea levels. From London Bridge, site of the oldest
crossing point, to the Millennium Bridge, the Thames' newest
crossing. This book explains the panorama we see today, what
came before and how the changes came about. Each double page shows
the distance covered so you can plan your own tour of the river.
This volume looks at the impact of evergreen activities - sports,
games and gambling - upon the way we talk and the things we say.
Peter Ryding takes us from cricket to roulette via some very tricky
and diverting tangents.
This guidebook presents the Dartmoor Way, a 175km (109 mile) walk
around Dartmoor National Park in Devon. Walked in 10 day-long
stages between 12.75 and 20.5km (8 and 12.75 miles) in length, this
waymarked route skirts the edge of England's largest granite
moorland, passing through towns including Ivybridge, Ashburton,
Okehampton and Tavistock. Also included is the 2-day High Moor
Link, which crosses the moor's higher ground. With 1:50,000 scale
OS maps for each stage, the book includes notes on nature, history
and local landmarks such as Haytor Rocks, the Teign gorge and
Dewerstone crags. Taking in ancient paths, tracks and quiet lanes,
the route is mostly at low level and is suitable for most walkers,
although some stages involve short, steep climbs and descents.
Accommodation, parking and public transport are covered, allowing
walkers to choose whether to tackle the route in one go or as
individual day walks. Each stage includes low-level detours in case
of bad weather, as well as details of walking the route in reverse,
giving readers flexibility over direction of travel. Further
options include creating shorter loops joined by the High Moor
Link, or walking the entire circular route in 7 days.
This volume looks at the legacy of British history in the way we
talk and the things we say. It takes us from the departure of the
Romans from Britain up to and including the Middle Ages.

DO YOU REALLY BELIEVE THAT JESUS CHRIST IS GOING TO COME BACK TO
THIS EARTH AGAIN? I do. And I don't see any other hope for the
world because we're heading toward a catastrophe. The Bible says,
"Scoffers will come in the last days. . . . They will say, 'Where
is the promise of his coming?' For they deliberately overlook this
fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed
out of water and through water by the word of God, and that by
means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water
and perished. But by the same word the heavens and earth that now
exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment
and destruction of the ungodly" (2 Peter 3:3-7). The Word of God,
the Bible, speaks of the certainties of the end of the world. Jesus
said, "As were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son
of Man" (Matthew 24:37). What were the days of Noah like? And is
there a parallel for today? The people of Noah's day were very
wicked: "Every intention of the thoughts" of their hearts was "only
evil continually" (Genesis 6:5). Marriage was abused, people were
corrupt, violence prevailed (Genesis 6:1-13). There was a lot of
"religion," but it was decadent. People were preoccupied with
things and didn't have time for God. So God warned them, "Unless
you repent and change your ways, you're going to face judgment." In
the middle of all that corruption, Noah dared to live for God. Noah
believed in God, and true faith determined how he lived. By that
faith Noah built a ship in the middle of the desert, and he and his
family were saved when the waters of destruction came (Genesis
6:1-13, Hebrews 11:7). True faith should determine how we live,
too. Today the only bright spot on the horizon of this world's
future is the promise of the return of Jesus Christ. We can't go on
like this much longer, either morally or scientifically. The
technology that was supposed to save us is ready to destroy us. Yet
we're not to wait in terror, because as Christians, we have the
hope of the return of Christ. When is he going to return? Jesus
said, "Concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the
angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only" (Matthew
24:36). NOAH BELIEVED IN GOD, AND TRUE FAITH DETERMINED HOW HE
LIVED. TRUE FAITH SHOULD DETERMINE HOW WE LIVE, TOO. But are you
ready when the end of life in this world comes for you personally?
The Bible says, "It is appointed for man to die once, and after
that comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27). It is coming the moment you
die, and that could be at any time for any of us. You may be
expecting to live for many more years, but you can't know for sure.
We never know. One of the biblical prophets wrote, "Prepare to meet
your God" (Amos 4:12). What have you done spiritually in your life
to prepare for that moment when your heart stops beating? The Bible
also says about Jesus: "There is salvation [from God's judgment for
sin] in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given
among men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12). You need to make
a commitment to Christ today. First, repent of your sins, including
all of those things we say and do that offend other people, and God
himself! "All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God"
(Romans 3:23). Without God's Spirit coming to live within us we
don't have the strength to change and live a life that pleases God.
That's why we need to be saved! Repentance means that you say to
God, "I have sinned. I am sorry for my sins. I want to change my
way of living by your empowerment." Second, you come to God by
faith. That means that you put your whole trust in him and say,
"Lord, I believe Christ's death for me provides everything I need
to be forgiven for my sins and become accepted by you. I trust in
Jesus alone for my salvation. Please save me now and help me live
for you." You may be a good person. You may do all the good that
you can think of, but all of that isn't enough. You must come in
childlike faith to Jesus who died on the cross for you, who rose
again, who is waiting for you to make that commitment. ARE YOU
READY TO MEET GOD?

From the New York Times bestselling author of The Signal and the Noise,
the definitive guide to our era of risk―and the players raising the
stakes
In the bestselling The Signal and the Noise, Nate Silver showed how
forecasting would define the age of Big Data. Now, in this timely and
riveting new book, Silver investigates "The River," or those whose
mastery of risk allows them to shape―and dominate―so much of modern
life.
These professional risk takers―poker players and hedge fund managers,
crypto true-believers and blue-chip art collectors―can teach us much
about navigating the uncertainty of the 21st century. By embedding
within these worlds, Silver offers insight into a range of issues that
affect us all, from the frontiers of finance to the future of AI.
The River has increasing amounts of wealth and power in our society,
and understanding their mindset―including the flaws in their
thinking―is key to understanding what drives technology and the global
economy today. There are certain commonalities in this otherwise
diverse group: high tolerance for risk; appreciation of uncertainty;
affinity for numbers; skill at de-coupling; self-reliance and a
distrust of the conventional wisdom. For the River, complexity is baked
in, and the work is how to navigate it, without going beyond the pale.
Taking us behind-the-scenes from casinos to venture capital firms to
meetings of the effective altruism movement, On the Edge is a
deeply-reported, all-access journey into a hidden world of powerbrokers
and risk takers.
This biography of Tony Streather describes a man who was one of the
very great trailblazers of the golden age of Himalayan climbing in
the 1950s. Tony Streather was a professional soldier to the core,
serving in the North-West Frontier of India, Germany, Cyprus, North
Borneo and Northern Ireland among many assignments. But through a
chance meeting in post-Partition Pakistan, he became transport
officer to a Norwegian expedition to Tirich Mir and joined the
summit team that scaled the mountain for the first time. From that
moment onwards, he combined soldiering with a distinguished
mountaineering career. He summited Kangchenjunga as a member of the
second rope in 1955 and survived tragedies on K2 and Haramosh. Many
expeditions followed. His military career, which included
co-founding the Army Mountaineering Association, was exemplary. For
the first time, this authorized biography tells the full story of
Tony Streather, soldier and mountaineer.
