R321 R295 Discovery Miles 2 950 Save R26 (8%) Ships in 9 - 15 working days

America's most populous state is often seen as a west coast paradise by those who live there - and those who desire to live there. Anchored around the urban centres of Los Angeles in the south and San Francisco in the north, California is a place of idyllic beaches, cutting-edge architecture, spectacular national parks and Hollywood dazzle. In the pages of California, find out about the Big Sur, the precipitous, beautiful windy drive along Route 1 in the central coast; Yosemite National Park, home to the imposing Half Dome and El Capitan mountains, and offering stunning views from Glacier Point; San Jose and Silicon Valley, centre of the world's tech industry; Santa Monica Beach, a mecca for sun seekers; Rodeo Drive, the home of luxury goods stores in Beverley Hills; and Death Valley in the Mojave Desert, one of the hottest, driest places on Earth. Presented in a handy, pocket-sized landscape format and with captions explaining the story behind each photo, California is a stunning collection of images that brings to life the vitality of this iconic west coast American state.

Sunday Times Bestseller 'A paradigm-smashing chronicle of joyous entanglement' Charles Foster Waterstones Non-Fiction Book of the Month (September) Are trees social beings? How do trees live? Do they feel pain or have awareness of their surroundings? In The Hidden Life of Trees Peter Wohlleben makes the case that the forest is a social network. He draws on groundbreaking scientific discoveries to describe how trees are like human families: tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, support them as they grow, share nutrients with those who are sick or struggling, and even warn each other of impending dangers. Wohlleben also shares his deep love of woods and forests, explaining the amazing processes of life, death and regeneration he has observed in his woodland. A walk in the woods will never be the same again.

Since its inception decades ago, the tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons has offered an escape from the real world, the chance to enter distant realms, walk in new shoes, and be part of immersive, imaginative tales as they unfold. More so, in Thom James Carter’s opinion, it’s a perfect vessel for queer exploration and joy. Journey on, adventurer, as Dungeon Master Thom invites readers into the game’s exciting queer, utopian possibilities, traversing its history and contemporary evolution, the queer potential resting within gameplay, the homebrewers making it their own, stories from fellow players, and the power to explore and examine identity and how people want to lead their lives in real and imagined worlds alike. Grab a sword and get your dice at the ready, this queer adventure is about to begin. (This book is unofficial and unaffiliated with properties Wizards of the Coast and Dungeons & Dragons.)

Golfland - Scotland - the guide to every Scottish golf course (Hardcover): David Cannon Golfland - Scotland - the guide to every Scottish golf course (Hardcover)
David Cannon; Michael Atkinson, Craig Morrison
R747 Discovery Miles 7 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

GOLFLAND describes each one of Scotland's golf courses. It is the detailed, definitive guide to the country's courses. It's the first book of its kind in more than a decade, an ambitious celebration of Scotland's embarrassment of golfing riches. Useful and informative, it is a practical reference work. Beautifully designed, with stunning photography by David Cannon, it is also a highly desirable gift. GOLFLAND is an appropriate name for a book about the courses of Scotland, the country recognised as the birthplace of the game. Scotland is a mecca for golf tourists worldwide, who come to play its most celebrated courses, such as Carnoustie, Muirfield and the historic links of St Andrews. Yet for all of Scotland's most distinguished courses, like those which host The Open, there are hundreds of others, some known to aficionados, some so far-flung as to be familiar to only a few. GOLFLAND records and celebrates them all. If you are planning a trip to Scotland or simply want to explore the richness of the country's golfing landscape, GOLFLAND is essential. For dreaming about some future game, or else remembering one played long ago, it is equally invaluable. GOLFLAND will answer almost all the questions you might have about Scottish golf courses. GOLFLAND is also the answer to a commonly asked question: what is the perfect gift for the golfer in my life?

Forage In Spring - The Food and Medicine of Britain's Wild Plants (Paperback, 2nd Edition): Robin Harford Forage In Spring - The Food and Medicine of Britain's Wild Plants (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
Robin Harford
R600 Discovery Miles 6 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book is an immersive experience into the delights of foraging in Spring, written by one of Britain's most respected foragers. Forage In Spring celebrates the top fifteen edible and medicinal wild plants found in March, April and May. It's a comprehensive exploration of their past and present uses as food and medicine. An invaluable addition to any forager, herbalist, gardener, horticulturist or naturalist's library, providing plant-lovers with a much-needed resource to understanding nature's most useful wild plants. Inside, you'll discover the forgotten story of Alexanders, Brooklime, Cleavers (Goosegrass), Dandelion, Garlic Mustard, Ground Elder, Ground Ivy, Plantain, Primrose, Ramsons (Wild Garlic), Sea Beet, Sorrel, Sowthistle, Stinging Nettle and Violet. Plants have stories that reconnect us to the Land and the rest of Nature. As our society becomes ever more disconnected, there is a revivalist movement flourishing like a rhizome. This ancient path of the forager reconnects us to the vital, to wildness, to creation, to what is in effect the very pulse of life itself. One of the most direct ways to experience this is to consume this wildness. Take it into our bodies, where like a sleeper agent, it lies dormant until you have eaten enough to change the structure of your blood, thereby changing your brain and how you relate to the non-human world. For it is this simple act. The act of taking wild food and medicine into our body, that in time becomes so transformative. Forage In Spring is not a harking back to some naive, romantic vision of how we might once have lived. Instead, these plants' stories are a way to help you sense into the future and understand our ecological function (as a species) within the world.

Walking the Via Francigena Pilgrim Route - Part 2 - Lausanne and the Great St Bernard Pass to Lucca (Paperback): The Reverend... Walking the Via Francigena Pilgrim Route - Part 2 - Lausanne and the Great St Bernard Pass to Lucca (Paperback)
The Reverend Sandy Brown
R563 Discovery Miles 5 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

An indispensable guidebook to walking the Via Francigena between Lausanne and Lucca. This is the middle section of the pilgrim route connecting Canterbury to the Vatican City in Rome, and passes through some of the Via Francigena's most beautiful and dramatic scenery. Starting at Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) in Switzerland, the 725km route crosses the Alps into Italy at historic Great Saint Bernard Pass, descends through the Aosta Valley to the Po Valley, then climbs again to cross the Cisa Pass into Tuscany. The route is described in 32 day stages averaging around 23km a day, but can easily be customised to other itineraries. It is suitable for any averagely fit walker, although there are a few steep mountainous stages. Relevant variants are described, including options to make use of boat, bus and train connections, and it is possible to cycle all or part of the Italian portion of the route. In this guidebook, full stage directions are accompanied by maps showing the route line and the facilities available at different locations. Accommodation listings give invaluable information on low-cost pilgrim hostels and where to stay. There are useful city maps for Lausanne, Aosta, Ivrea, Pavia, Piacenza and Lucca, and a stage planning table lists intermediate distances between accommodation providers, so you can customise your own walking schedule. One of three volumes covering the complete Via Francigena.

Edible and Medicinal Wild Plants of Britain and Ireland (Paperback, 3rd Edition): Robin Harford Edible and Medicinal Wild Plants of Britain and Ireland (Paperback, 3rd Edition)
Robin Harford
R599 Discovery Miles 5 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Covers forty eight wild edible and medicinal plants of Britain and Ireland.

Includes multiple full-colour photographs of each plant to help make identification easy.

I wrote this book to help you rediscover our forgotten plant heritage. To learn how to use wild plants as food and medicine. Knowledge that was once common to everyone.

Each individual plant profile includes:

  • common name
  • scientific name
  • family
  • an easy to understand botanical description
  • multiple full colour photos of each plant
  • when the plant flowers
  • where it is found
  • a historical summary
  • which parts of the plant to use
  • how the plant is used as food
  • its nutritional profile
  • its traditional folk medicine uses
  • and finally, safety notes

For over fifteen years I have experimented and explored the world of wild plants. Uncovering how our ancestors used plants to nourish and heal themselves.

I’ve spent thousands of hours digging through scientific papers, read hundreds of books. Even gone so far as to be nomadic for over a year. During this time I followed the seasons and plants around the highways and byways of these isles.

I have written this book to help you rediscover our forgotten plant heritage. To learn how to use wild plants as food and medicine. Knowledge that was once common to everyone.

Another Epic Feat of Navigation Safely Completed! (Paperback): Jeremy Walker Another Epic Feat of Navigation Safely Completed! (Paperback)
Jeremy Walker
R599 Discovery Miles 5 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"As I sat on the side of Hamnafield on Foula in the Shetland Islands, looking down at my 'enormous' 38-foot ferry stowed in its cradle on the quay in Ham Voe, over 1,000 feet below me, I reflected on a moderately successful career to date, and wondered how on Earth I had ended up driving what was, in effect, a floating dust cart" After 42 years at or connected with the sea, Jeremy Walker ended up on the Shetland Island of Foula commanding and running a small ferry to the mainland of Shetland. Throughout the course of his career, firstly as a seagoing deck officer with a large, but now defunct, British shipping company, then as a Hovercraft Commander for four years, returning to sea for a brief period as Master of two small coastal tankers and then for the majority of his career as a Pilot on the River Humber, he encountered many amusing situations. In this book he attempts to relate these stories and to illustrate the lighter side of what was a very difficult, responsible and, at times, incredibly stressful job. And little did he know that his career was far from over and new opportunities and challenges would take him on for a further 13 years to eventual retirement.

Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796) (Paperback): Mary Wollstonecraft Letters Written During a Short Residence in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark (1796) (Paperback)
Mary Wollstonecraft; Edited by Ingrid Horrocks
R676 Discovery Miles 6 760 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"The art of travelling is only a branch of the art of thinking," Mary Wollstonecraft wrote in 1790 in a review of a travel narrative set in Ireland. A Short Residence was her own travel memoir, and became the work that Wollstonecraft most admired in her own lifetime. The text narrates Wollstonecraft's journey through Scandinavia, accompanied by her young daughter; the letters are addressed to an unnamed lover. Passionate and personal, the letters also explore the comparative political and social systems of Europe. The result is a travel book that is both as much a work of political thought as Wollstonecraft's more well-known treatises, and an innovative and influential work in the genre. This Broadview Edition provides a helpful introduction and extensive appendices that contextualise this remarkable text in relation to a number of key political and aesthetic debates.
