Minimum Reinforcement in Concrete Members, Volume 24 (Hardcover): A. Carpinteri Minimum Reinforcement in Concrete Members, Volume 24 (Hardcover)
A. Carpinteri
R2,098 Discovery Miles 20 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The ESIS-Technical Committee 9 on Concrete was established in 1990 and has met seven times. A proposal was put to European and extra-European laboratories entitled "Scale effects and transitional failure phenomena of reinforced concrete beams in flexure" which lead to several positive responses.

The central topic discussed by the committee was that of the minimum reinforcement in concrete members. The minimum amount of reinforcement is defined as that for which "peak load at first concrete cracking" and "ultimate load after steel yielding" are equal. In this way, any brittle behaviour is avoided as well as any localized failure, if the member is not over-reinforced. In other words, there is a reinforcement percentage range, depending on the size-scale, within which the plastic limit analysis may be applied with its static and kinematic theorems.

Carpinteri, Ferro, Bosco and El-Katieb propose a LEFM model, according to which reinforcement reactions are applied directly on the crack surfaces and a compatibility condition is locally imposed on the crack opening displacement in correspondence with the reinforcement. The theoretical model is found to provide a satisfactory estimate of the minimum percentage of reinforcement that depends on the scale and enables the element in flexure to prevent brittle failure.

Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions (Paperback, 2nd edition): George Penelis, Gregory Penelis Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions (Paperback, 2nd edition)
George Penelis, Gregory Penelis
R1,502 Discovery Miles 15 020 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reinforced concrete (R/C) is one of the main building materials used worldwide, and an understanding of its structural performance under gravity and seismic loads, albeit complex, is crucial for the design of cost effective and safe buildings. Concrete Buildings in Seismic Regions comprehensively covers of all the analysis and design issues related to the design of reinforced concrete buildings under seismic action. It is suitable as a reference to the structural engineer dealing with specific problems during the design process and also for undergraduate and graduate structural, concrete and earthquake engineering courses. This revised edition provides new and significantly developed coverage of seismic isolation and passive devices, and coverage of recent code modifications as well as notes on future developments of standards. It retains an overview of structural dynamics, the analysis and design of new R/C buildings in seismic regions, post-earthquake damage evaluation, pre-earthquake assessment of buildings and retrofitting procedures, and several numerical examples. The book outlines appropriate structural systems for many types of buildings, explores recent developments, and covers the last two decades of analysis, design, and earthquake engineering. It specifically addresses seismic demand issues and the basic issues of structural dynamics, considers the "capacity" of structural systems to withstand seismic effects in terms of strength and deformation, and highlights the assessment of existing R/C buildings under seismic action. All of the material has been developed to fit a modern seismic code and offers in-depth knowledge of the background upon which the code rules are based. It complies with European Codes of Practice for R/C buildings in seismic regions, and includes references to current American Standards for seismic design.

Vibration of Mindlin Plates - Programming the p-Version Ritz Method (Hardcover): K.M. Liew, Y. Xiang, S. Kitipornchai, C.M. Wang Vibration of Mindlin Plates - Programming the p-Version Ritz Method (Hardcover)
K.M. Liew, Y. Xiang, S. Kitipornchai, C.M. Wang
R3,424 Discovery Miles 34 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last several years, the four authors have jointly conducted research into the analysis of vibrating Mindlin plates as a collaborative project between Nanyang Technological University, The National University of Singapore, and The University of Queensland. The research was prompted by the fact that there is a dearth of vibration results for Mindlin plates when compared to classical thin plate solutions. To generate the vibration results, the authors have successfully employed the Ritz method for general plate shapes and boundary conditions. The Ritz method, once thought to be awkward for general plate analysis, can be automated through suitable trial functions (for displacements) that satisfy the geometric plate boundary conditions "a priori." This work has been well-received by academics and researchers, as indicated by the continual requests for the authors' papers and the Ritz software codes. This monograph is written with the view to share this so-called "p"-Ritz method for the vibration analysis of Mindlin plates and its software codes with the research community. To the authors' knowledge, the monograph contains the first published Ritz plate software codes of its kind.

Optimisation of Composite Structures Design (Paperback): A. Miravete Optimisation of Composite Structures Design (Paperback)
A. Miravete
R5,800 R5,220 Discovery Miles 52 200 Save R580 (10%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Composite materials have been used more and more during the last decade to lighten structures. But until now, there has been no clear way of establishing how to design properly optimised laminated composite plates with no reduction in strength. Most modern references lack adequate information for the designer wanting to tailor or synthesise a design. This exciting package offers a solution. It relates the theory of composite materials to real life and provides 'rules' for designing composites structures properly and in an optimum way.
In the book, Professor Miravete demonstrates the optimisation of beams, plates and sandwich constructions in the designs of advanced composite materials. He also illustrates optimal material systems, fibre orientations and lay-up through functions of geometry, load type and boundary conditions. The associates software, on two disks, will enable
users to adapt the information to their own requirements and is very user-friendly with helpful manuals. This will be an essential package for designers and engineers in a wide range of areas, from aeronautics to automotive and
marine as well as general industry.
Chapter 1 provides a general background on composite materials.
Chapters 2, 3, 4, and 5 are concerned with constant thickness composite structures, and provide a survey of various design methodologies of shells, plates and sandwich constructions.
Chapters 6, 7, 8 and 9 examine variable thickness composite structures, and consider beams, plates and sandwiches.
A completemanual for anyone concerned with designing composite structuresIncludes book and used-friendly softwareCan be easily applied to any area - aeronautics, automotive, marine or general industry

Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement (Paperback): Dimiter Alexiew, Marcio Almeida, Mario Riccio, Iman... Geosynthetic Encased Columns for Soft Soil Improvement (Paperback)
Dimiter Alexiew, Marcio Almeida, Mario Riccio, Iman Hosseinpour
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The geosynthetic encased column (GEC) is a relatively recent method developed for soft soil improvement. The method was firstly introduced as a concept in the 1980s and first practical applications started in the 1990s. GECs have been widely used in some parts of the world for the last three decades. However, there is no book in the literature summarizing the knowledge accumulated during this period in relation to this soft ground improvement technique. The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the GEC fundamentals and practical applications. Chapter 1 presents the general principles of this ground improvement technique including the methods used for GEC installation and how the material properties may be selected. Chapter 2 presents the design methods, thus settlement calculations by means of analytical methods and stability calculations by limit equilibrium methods are explained in detail. Chapter 3 presents calculation examples illustrating the usual steps to be done for both service limit state and ultimate limit state designs. Then field performances exemplifying practical applications of the GEC technique are presented in Chapter 4 for some case histories. Following numerical analyses, often used in design to complement analytical methods, are presented in Chapter 5. Annexes I and II at the end contain the charts developed to perform settlement calculations. The book combines the experiences of four authors with different academic and industry backgrounds to describe GEC design and performance. It is aimed at civil engineers in general, particularly geotechnical engineers, either working in design or in practice, at graduate students, and at senior undergraduate students.

Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering - An Introduction (Paperback): M.S. Rahman, M.B. Can Ulker Modeling and Computing for Geotechnical Engineering - An Introduction (Paperback)
M.S. Rahman, M.B. Can Ulker
R1,453 Discovery Miles 14 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Modeling and computing is becoming an essential part of the analysis and design of an engineered system. This is also true of "geotechnical systems", such as soil foundations, earth dams and other soil-structure systems. The general goal of modeling and computing is to predict and understand the behaviour of the system subjected to a variety of possible conditions/scenarios (with respect to both external stimuli and system parameters), which provides the basis for a rational design of the system. The essence of this is to predict the response of the system to a set of external forces. The modelling and computing essentially involve the following three phases: (a) Idealization of the actual physical problem, (b) Formulation of a mathematical model represented by a set of equations governing the response of the system, and (c) Solution of the governing equations (often requiring numerical methods) and graphical representation of the numerical results. This book will introduce these phases. MATLAB (R) codes and MAPLE (R) worksheets are available for those who have bought the book. Please contact the author at [email protected] or [email protected]. Earthquake Hazard Assessment - India and Adjacent Regions (Paperback): Sreevalsa Kolathayar, T. G. Sitharam Earthquake Hazard Assessment - India and Adjacent Regions (Paperback)
Sreevalsa Kolathayar, T. G. Sitharam
R1,407 Discovery Miles 14 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book represents a significant contribution to the area of earthquake data processing and to the development of region-specific magnitude correlations to create an up-to-date homogeneous earthquake catalogue that is uniform in magnitude scale. The book discusses seismicity analysis and estimation of seismicity parameters of a region at both finer and broader levels using different methodologies. The delineation and characterization of regional seismic source zones which requires reasonable observation and engineering judgement is another subject covered. Considering the complex seismotectonic composition of a region, use of numerous methodologies (DSHA and PSHA) in analyzing the seismic hazard using appropriate instruments such as the logic tree will be elaborated to explicitly account for epistemic uncertainties considering alternative models (for Source model, Mmax estimation and Ground motion prediction equations) to estimate the PGA value at bedrock level. Further, VS30 characterization based on the topographic gradient, to facilitate the development of surface level PGA maps using appropriate amplification factors, is discussed. Evaluation of probabilistic liquefaction potential is also explained in the book. Necessary backgrounds and contexts of the aforementioned topics are elaborated through a case study specific to India which features spatiotemporally varied and complex tectonics. The methodology and outcomes presented in this book will be beneficial to practising engineers and researchers working in the fields of seismology and geotechnical engineering in particular and to society in general.

Shallow Foundations and Soil Constitutive Laws (Paperback): Swami Saran Shallow Foundations and Soil Constitutive Laws (Paperback)
Swami Saran
R1,415 Discovery Miles 14 150 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The book offers a systematic analysis of footings (i.e. shallow foundations) in a realistic way, using constitutive relationships of the soil. The aim of the book is to deal with the theme holistically, involving the determination of the constitutive law of the soil, and then proportioning the footing occurring in different situations in actual practice. The book has eleven chapters. After giving an introduction and scope of the book in the first chapter, second and third chapters are respectively devoted to constitutive laws of soil and basic stress equations. In the third chapter analysis of strip footings subjected to central vertical load has been dealt. This analysis has been extended for eccentric -inclined load in the fifth chapter. Since problems of shallow foundations resting adjacent to a slope are of prime importance, this aspect has been dealt in sixth chapter. In the seventh chapter, analysis pertaining to square and rectangular footings have been presented. Effect of interference between adjacent footing is covered in chapter eight. Since ring footings are usually provided for tanks, silos, towers etc., ninth chapter is devoted to this. Added attraction of the book is its chapter ten in which footings located in seismic regions have been covered. Effect of embedment below the ground surface on the behavior of footings located both in non-seismic and seismic regions has been dealt in the chapter eleven. The book is intended for senior undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. students of civil engineering, research scholars, practicing engineers, teachers and academicians. The analyses are based on the latest information available. A number of illustrated examples have been included in the text. SI units have been used in the book.

Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Performance - Practical Deterministic and Probabilistic Approaches... Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings for Seismic Performance - Practical Deterministic and Probabilistic Approaches (Paperback)
Mark Aschheim, Enrique Hernandez-Montes, Dimitrios Vamvatsikos
R1,466 Discovery Miles 14 660 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The costs of inadequate earthquake engineering are huge, especially for reinforced concrete buildings. This book presents the principles of earthquake-resistant structural engineering, and uses the latest tools and techniques to give practical design guidance to address single or multiple seismic performance levels. It presents an elegant, simple and theoretically coherent design framework. Required strength is determined on the basis of an estimated yield displacement and desired limits of system ductility and drift demands. A simple deterministic approach is presented along with its elaboration into a probabilistic treatment that allows for design to limit annual probabilities of failure. The design method allows the seismic force resisting system to be designed on the basis of elastic analysis results, while nonlinear analysis is used for performance verification. Detailing requirements of ACI 318 and Eurocode 8 are presented. Students will benefit from the coverage of seismology, structural dynamics, reinforced concrete, and capacity design approaches, which allows the book to be used as a foundation text in earthquake engineering.

Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns (Paperback): Qing Quan Liang, Vipulkumar Patel, Muhammad Hadi Concrete-Filled Stainless Steel Tubular Columns (Paperback)
Qing Quan Liang, Vipulkumar Patel, Muhammad Hadi
R1,404 Discovery Miles 14 040 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Concrete-filled stainless steel tubular (CFSST) columns are increasingly used in modern composite construction due to their high strength, high ductility, high corrosion resistance, high durability and aesthetics and ease of maintenance. Thin-walled CFSST columns are characterized by the different strain-hardening behavior of stainless steel in tension and in compression, local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement. Design codes and numerical models often overestimate or underestimate the ultimate strengths of CFSST columns. This book presents accurate and efficient computational models for the nonlinear inelastic analysis and design of CFSST short and slender columns under axial load and biaxial bending. The effects of different strain-hardening characteristics of stainless steel in tension and in compression, progressive local and post-local buckling of stainless steel tubes and concrete confinement are taken into account in the computational models. The numerical models simulate the axial load-strain behavior, moment-curvature curves, axial load-deflection responses and axial load-moment strength interaction diagrams of CFSST columns. The book describes the mathematical formulations, computational procedures and model verifications for circular and rectangular CFSST short and slender columns. The behavior of CFSST columns under various loading conditions is demonstrated by numerous numerical examples. This book is written for practising structural and civil engineers, academic researchers and graduate students in civil engineering who are interested in the latest computational techniques and design methods for CFSST columns.
