Modern Cryosurgery For Cancer (Hardcover): Kecheng Xu, Nikolai N. Korpan, Lizhi Niu Modern Cryosurgery For Cancer (Hardcover)
Kecheng Xu, Nikolai N. Korpan, Lizhi Niu
R8,909 Discovery Miles 89 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Cryosurgery is a surgical technique that employs freezing to destroy undesirable tissue. From as early as 3500 BC, there is evidence for the use of cold in medicine for the treatment of infected wounds of the chest, fracture of the skull and various injuries. However, the history of "modern" cryosurgery is relatively short and is closely intertwined with the development in low temperature physics, engineering, and instrumentation during the last century. From the early 21st century, advanced helium-based cryosurgery has been applied worldwide. More than ten thousand patients with malignant and benign tumors have received cryosurgery. It is specially noted that in most cases cryosurgery, as a mini-invasive ablation technique, was performed with percutaneous approach under guidance of CT or ultrasound. Cryosurgery is now one of the more popular techniques in China, with nearly 6000 cases of tumors receiving cryosurgery in the author's institution alone. This book summarizes the experimental and clinical experience and practice of cryosurgery, and describes the basics of cryosurgery and its use in the treatment of various tumors.

Novel Anticancer Drug Protocols (Hardcover, 2003 ed.): John K. Buolamwini, Alex A. Adjei Novel Anticancer Drug Protocols (Hardcover, 2003 ed.)
John K. Buolamwini, Alex A. Adjei
R4,572 Discovery Miles 45 720 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

We are in an exciting era in the war against cancer, with real prospects for novel anticancer drugs that are cancer cell-specific without the toxicities that have been the hallmark of conventional cytotoxic cancer chemotherapy. Advances in cancer cell biology fueled by the molecular biology revolution have resulted in the uncovering of many novel potential molecular targets for cancer therapy. New anticancer drug discovery and development is now largely focused on exploiting these new molecular targets, which encompass oncogenes, tumor s- pressor genes, and their gene products, as well as targets involved in tumor angiogenesis, metastasis, survival, and longevity mechanisms. Exploitation of some of these targets has already yielded fruits and introduced new paradigms of molecularly targeted cancer therapy into the clinic, namely, protein kinase in- bition by antibodies or small molecules, exemplified by Herceptin (R) (trastuzumab), a humanized antibody targeted against the HER-2 growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase for the treatment of metastatic breast cancer; and Gleevec, a small molecule bcr-abl kinase inhibitor for the treatment of chronic myel- enous leukemia.

Multidisciplinary Care of the Head and Neck Cancer Patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018): Ellie Maghami, Allen S. Ho Multidisciplinary Care of the Head and Neck Cancer Patient (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2018)
Ellie Maghami, Allen S. Ho
R2,903 Discovery Miles 29 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book identifies key treatment challenges and unique care considerations in patients with head and neck cancers, providing a comprehensive guide to patient management that illustrates the critical importance of a multidisciplinary approach in achieving optimal oncological, functional, and survival outcomes. It covers all relevant specialties, including dental and oral medicine, medical oncology, radiation oncology, surgical oncology, and reconstructive surgery. It highlights the vital role played by ancillary head and neck cancer services, such as speech and swallowing therapy, occupational and physical therapy, and nutritional therapy in offering essential physical and psychological support from the time of diagnosis onward. The closing chapters address post-treatment issues, including those relating to survivorship, surveillance, and end-of-life care. Multidisciplinary care is perhaps even more important for patients with head and neck cancers than for other cancer patients, and in addressing all its aspects this book is invaluable for a wide range of practitioners.

Uncommon Pancreatic Neoplasms (Hardcover, 2013 ed.): Paolo Pederzoli, Claudio Bassi Uncommon Pancreatic Neoplasms (Hardcover, 2013 ed.)
Paolo Pederzoli, Claudio Bassi
R2,901 Discovery Miles 29 010 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Uncommon tumors of the pancreas are of increasing interest for clinicians: cross imaging techniques development makes it possible to detect small lesions in the pancreatic gland of asymptomatic patients, and in the last decades a more detailed and specific pathological classification definitivelyopened an unexpected world of more or less rare pancreatic tumors. As a matter of fact, nowadays most surgical procedures deal with these so called uncommon pancreatic tumors such as cystic, endocrine and others unfrequent histotypes, and many patientsexperiencing an accidental discovery of this type of tumor need therefore a specialistic evaluation. The concept behind this volume is the need to give the correct clinical relevance to these "uncommon" tumors, that are ranked at the first place among pancreatic tumors, and that are definitively curable with a multimodal approach. Aim of the book is therefore to get clinicians closer to these pathologies, describing their complexity and the current state of the art in diagnostic, therapeutic and pathological classification strategy, thus providing them with the tools for a modern and updated clinical management of these patients.

Surgery in Multimodal Management of Solid Tumors (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): Antonio Bolognese, Luciano Izzo Surgery in Multimodal Management of Solid Tumors (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
Antonio Bolognese, Luciano Izzo
R2,867 Discovery Miles 28 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Surgery continues to be the most effective treatment of solid tumors in terms of recovery, while its combination with other treatments improves the survival curves especially in the advanced forms of the disease. The aim of my task first of all has been to provide readers with both the current and constantly evolving pathophysiologic knowledge required for building the foundation of a specific education enabling surgeons to meet the fundamental targets in surgical oncology. Secondly, this volume aims to present an update on the real possibilities offered by the cooperation between surgeon and pathologist and by chemotherapy, radiotherapy and gene therapy in the treatment of tumors in the light of the most recent scientific achievements. Lastly, the report presents the experiences and cases drawn mostly from our School regarding some of the major issues in oncologic surgery. This overview does not pretend to elucidate or to summarize all aspects of oncologic surgery, but rather to be the result of a general consideration on cancer surgery, on its rational bases, on its interaction with other treatment modalities, on its desirable and expected developments and on its probable future evolution.

Liver Metastasis: Biology and Clinical Management (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.): Pnina Brodt Liver Metastasis: Biology and Clinical Management (Hardcover, 2011 Ed.)
Pnina Brodt
R5,656 Discovery Miles 56 560 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Liver metastases are a frequent and often fatal occurrence in cancer patients, particularly those with malignancies of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. While recent improvements in surgical techniques and a more aggressive approach to resection of liver metastases have improved long term survival for some patients, most patients with hepatic metastases still succumb to their disease. To improve these dismal statistics, a better understanding of the biology of liver metastasis, particularly the early stages that can be targeted for prevention, is essential.

Once cancer cells enter the liver, several different scenarios may occur. The cancer cells may be immediately destroyed by local defence mechanisms, they may enter a state of dormancy as solitary cells and never produce a metastasis, initiate a short-lived process of proliferation that is aborted before a metastasis is established or actively proliferate to form macrometastases. The chapters in Part I of this book provide insight into the cellular/molecular mechanisms that determine which of these scenarios prevails. Written by experts researchers in the filed of metastasis, these chapters provide state-of-the art reviews on the cellular and molecular processes that impact the early stages of the metastatic process. The unique microenvironment of the liver, its various anatomical, cellular and molecular features and the impact they have on metastasis are highlighted. In addition, the role of inflammation (pre-existing and tumor-induced), host innate and adaptive immune responses, cytokines, chemokines, growth factors and the unique molecular signatures of metastatic tumor cells are reviewed with an underscoring of the translational implications of the current state of knowledge.

Against this background, the chapters in Part II of the book provide critical reviews on major aspects of the clinical management of hepatic metastases. These include imaging strategies, surgical and chemotherapeutic treatment approaches and the use of targeted biological therapeutics such as anti-angiogenic drugs as treatment modalities.

By combining information on biological and clinical aspects of liver metastasis, this volume will serve as an excellent resource for scientists, clinicians, clinician/ scientists and trainees in the domains of oncology, surgical oncology, hepatobiliary physiology and radiology. "

Apoptosis in Carcinogenesis and Chemotherapy - Apoptosis in cancer (Hardcover, 2009 ed.): George G. Chen, Paul B.S. Lai Apoptosis in Carcinogenesis and Chemotherapy - Apoptosis in cancer (Hardcover, 2009 ed.)
George G. Chen, Paul B.S. Lai
R5,655 Discovery Miles 56 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although research on carcinogenesis has focused more on cellular proliferation than on cell death, yet understanding the mechanism of apoptosis may have important implications for cancer therapy. This book brings together experts from around the world who will discuss the common cancers encountered in clinical practice in the laboratory setting. During the induction of these common cancers, the role of apoptosis in cellular and molecular changes is emphasized, critically highlighting possible anti-cancer strategies. For those who are interested in carcinogenesis and for those who are seeking new approaches to anti-cancer therapy, this book is an important reference. It serves not only as a reference of the current understanding of apoptosis in common cancers but also an important bridge between the laboratory and clinical practice. The editors and contributors are to be congratulated in bringing together an important pool of up-to-date knowledge to light and further our interest in this exciting and expanding ?eld. Arthur K. C. Li Emeritus Professor of Surgery The Chinese University of Hong Kong v Preface The role of apoptosis in cancer development and emerging treatment strategies has rapidly expanded over the past few years. The novel discovery in the apoptotic pa- ways and their relevant molecules provides us not only the knowledge how tumors develop but also the opportunity to design new therapeutic tools to prevent or inhibit the growth of tumors with minimal side-effects. Undoubtedly, understanding the events involved at a molecular level can permit the manipulation of apoptosis for therapeutic purposes.
