Conservation, Tourism, and Identity of Contemporary Community Art - A Case Study of Felipe Seade's Mural "Allegory to... Conservation, Tourism, and Identity of Contemporary Community Art - A Case Study of Felipe Seade's Mural "Allegory to Work" (Paperback)
Virginia Santamarina Campos, Maria Angeles Carabal Montagud, Maria de Miguel Molina, Blanca de Miguel Molina
R2,622 Discovery Miles 26 220 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This unique volume aims to promote new models of sustainable management in the field of contemporary mural art. Cultural heritage has become an essential tool for society, stressing the necessity to properly conserve cultural resources in order to maintain a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable development. In this book, the mural "Allegory to Work" by the artist Felipe Seade, located in Uruguay, is used as a case study. The work of Felipe Seade, a prominent political mural artist of the twentieth century, reflects the influence of Mexican heritage and the socio-political themes of that time, which were commonly used by the Social Realism art movement. The authors look at the mural-and its restoration-through the lens of tourism, globalization, and new interest in cultural heritage. The book demonstrates that the restoration should be aware that the perspective of the protagonists must be incorporated in the intervention process. This first-of-its-kind volume brings together historical, ethnographic, tourism, and scientific research that leads to a sustainable project, from the point of view of identity, economy, politics, and society. This volume, with over 50 color illustrations and many black and white photos, will be valuable for college and research libraries, undergraduate and graduate students, researchers and professors in the field of cultural heritage and art as well as those involved in community-based research.

The increasing demand for halal products, including goods and services, every year, especially for food and beverages, has resulted in a growing need for products with halal guarantees. Along with the increasing trend of the global demand, it has resulted in an increase in producers of halal food and beverages in both Muslim and non-Muslim countries. In addition the demand for halal tourism is also increasing. Indonesia is one of the largest Muslim countries in the world. However, there are still many Muslim consumer actors and Muslim producer actors who do not yet have an awareness of the importance of complying with the provisions of Islamic law in consuming and producing goods and services. There are still many restaurants and hotels that serve food and drinks that are not certified halal. There are still many food, medicinal and cosmetic products that are not halal certified. But now many secular countries such as France, Canada, Australia, the United States, Britain are also halal certified with the aim of meeting the Muslim demand for halal products for food and beverage, including for halal tourism. Starting from the development of the halal industry both in the fields of food, beverages and services, an International Seminar was held, which provides a more complete understanding of halal products, current halal developments and can serve as motivation to produce halal products, providing research results from the topic of halal development. The international seminar, entitled International Conference on Halal Development, listed speakers from several countries able to provide an overview of the halal development of several countries. This book contains a selection of papers from the conference.

Indigenous Heritage (Hardcover): Michelle Whitford, Lisa Ruhanen Indigenous Heritage (Hardcover)
Michelle Whitford, Lisa Ruhanen
R4,465 Discovery Miles 44 650 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

History shows that travellers sought to experience the unfamiliar and exotic cultures and traditions of Indigenous peoples, with early examples of Indigenous tourism in the United States, Canada, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand and countries throughout Asia and Latin America. Similarly, contemporary travellers demonstrate a desire to seek out opportunities to experience Indigenous peoples and their cultures. Thus, we are witnessing worldwide growth in the awareness of, and interest in, Indigenous cultures, traditions, histories and knowledges. Engagement in the tourism sector is regularly advocated for Indigenous peoples because of the socio-economic opportunities it provides; however, there are a range of cultural benefits including the maintenance, rejuvenation and/or preservation of Indigenous cultures, knowledges and traditions for Indigenous peoples who choose tourism as a vehicle to showcase their cultures. Consequently, tourism is regularly acknowledged as a means for facilitating the sustainability of tangible and intangible Indigenous cultural heritage including languages, stories, art, dance, rituals and customs. Importantly, however, the history of Indigenous peoples' engagement in tourism has provided a range of examples of the threats to Indigenous culture that can accrue as a result of tourism (i.e., cultural degradation, commercialisation and commodification, authenticity and identity, among others). This book presents an exploration of the intersection between tourism and Indigenous culture. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Heritage Tourism.

Claudia Ba, Sybille Frank, Claus Muller, Anna Laura Raschke, Kristin Wellner, …
R4,479 Discovery Miles 44 790 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Power of New Urban Tourism explores new forms of tourism in urban areas with their social, political, cultural, architectural and economic implications. By investigating various showcases of New Urban Tourism within its social and spatial frames, the book offers insights into power relations and connections between tourism and cityscapes in various socio-spatial settings around the world. Contributors to the volume show how urban space has become a battleground between local residents and visitors, with changing perceptions of tourists as co-users of public and private urban spaces and as influencers of the local economies. This includes different roles of digital platforms as resources for access to the city and touristic opportunities as well as ways to organise and express protest or shifting representations of urban space. With contemporary cases from a wide disciplinary spectrum, the contributors investigate the power of New Urban Tourism in Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe and Oceania. This focus allows a cross-cultural evaluation of New Urban Tourism and its dynamic, and changing conception transforming and subverting cities and tourism alike. The Power of New Urban Tourism will be of great interest to academics, researchers and students in the fields of cultural studies, sociology, the political sciences, economics, history, human geography, urban design and planning, architecture, ethnology and anthropology.

Understanding Young Chinese Backpackers - The Pursuit of Freedom and Its Risks (Hardcover): Jia Xie Understanding Young Chinese Backpackers - The Pursuit of Freedom and Its Risks (Hardcover)
Jia Xie
R4,918 Discovery Miles 49 180 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

An activity that originated in Western societies, backpacking has gained increasing popularity among Chinese millennials. In a spirit of the 'search for self', young Chinese backpackers have sought to display their pursuit of freedom, independence and responsibility within an increasingly individualised society through backpacking. This volume investigates contemporary young Chinese persons' views on backpacking culture and backpackers. A group of Chinese backpackers are studied using interview and participant observation, and focus groups are conducted to study young professionals' and university students' attitudes towards backpacking. The results indicate a profound cultural change along with a degree of division. On the one hand, the backpackers often begin their journey due to a desire to pursue freedom, and use the pursuit as a process of reflexive awareness; on the other hand, the risks of pursuing a freewheeling lifestyle within an individualised society drive the majority of them to return home. The author concludes that this phenomenon is a kind of 'staged individualism', describing how Chinese millennials strike a balance between individual interests and wider social obligations. Students and scholars of sociology tourism, and youth culture will be interested in this volume.

Tourism and Dictatorship - Europe's Peaceful Invasion of Franco's Spain (Hardcover, 2006 ed.): S Pack Tourism and Dictatorship - Europe's Peaceful Invasion of Franco's Spain (Hardcover, 2006 ed.)
S Pack
R1,534 Discovery Miles 15 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In the three decades following the Second World War, during the dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain became the playground for millions of carefree tourists from Europe's prosperous democracies. This book chronicles how their presence not only helped to strengthen the Franco regime's economic and political standing, but also provoked institutional change, undermining the dictatorship's moral austerity and economic autarky. The study looks beneath exotic imagery of bulls and flamenco dancers, and sensationalized stories of Francoist police persecuting bikini-clad foreigners, to examine how the advent of foreign tourism profoundly influenced the regime's diplomatic and economic orientations as early as 1945. In the 1960s, mass tourism was emblematic of a dynamic, modernizing Spain, and contributed significantly to the changing political and social conditions in which Spain's post-Franco democracy was born.

Visual Media and Tourism (Hardcover): Seongseop (Sam) Kim, Steve Pan Visual Media and Tourism (Hardcover)
Seongseop (Sam) Kim, Steve Pan
R4,469 Discovery Miles 44 690 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tourism is all about visuals. Visuals stimulate our imagination, create fantasy, and drive the audiences to take actions to realize these dreams through perceived reality. With media content presented through channels of television drama, reality shows, TV commercials, and movies, this book presents findings that help us better understand the relationships between nostalgia and film tourism; how reality TV shows affect tourist experience and authenticity; and how visuals stimulate audiences' taste and olfactory senses and their relationship with gastronomical tourism. The book presents findings that explain the psychological mechanism of how modality and navigability influence tourists' behavioral intention. With its balanced research methodology (qualitative, quantitative, and the combination of both) and important topics covered in media tourism, Visual Media and Tourism serves as a pertinent reference book for subjects related to special interest tourism, such as film tourism, in undergraduate programs, or modules related to research methods in both undergraduate and graduate programs. It helps readers become better informed on how visuals stimulate travel motivations, condition tourist behaviors, and affect travel experiences. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Travel & Tourism Marketing.

Sustainable Transport and Tourism Destinations (Hardcover): Luca Zamparini Sustainable Transport and Tourism Destinations (Hardcover)
Luca Zamparini
R3,358 Discovery Miles 33 580 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Transport allows tourists to move from their origins to their destinations and within destinations. The increase in tourism, and in connected mobility, has raised sustainability issues in terms of ecological protection and the economic efficiency of competing destinations. This book examines the links between transport, tourism, and sustainability by means of a series of large case studies covering several countries. Themes, frameworks and proposed policies are discussed throughout the book. The concluding chapter of the book takes an explicitly comparative approach and highlights the new contributions that emerge from the case study chapters for both scholars and practitioners. The Transport and Sustainability series addresses the important nexus between transport and sustainability. It contains volumes dealing with a wide range of issues relating to transport, its impact in economic, social and environmental spheres, and its interaction with other policy sectors. Editors and authors take a wide range of approaches - some volumes are general and some specific in nature, and analyses are advanced from a host of different disciplinary backgrounds and perspectives - but the defining feature is that each contribution is grounded in a firm appreciation of how its contents relate to the broader imperatives associated with transport and sustainability.

Tourism Imaginaries - Anthropological Approaches (Hardcover): Noel B. Salazar, Nelson H.H. Graburn Tourism Imaginaries - Anthropological Approaches (Hardcover)
Noel B. Salazar, Nelson H.H. Graburn
R3,025 Discovery Miles 30 250 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

It is hard to imagine tourism without the creative use of seductive, as well as restrictive, imaginaries about peoples and places. These socially shared assemblages are collaboratively produced and consumed by a diverse range of actors around the globe. As a nexus of social practices through which individuals and groups establish places and peoples as credible objects of tourism, "tourism imaginaries" have yet to be fully explored. Presenting innovative conceptual approaches, this volume advances ethnographic research methods and critical scholarship regarding tourism and the imaginaries that drive it. The various authors contribute methodologically as well as conceptually to anthropology's grasp of the images, forces, and encounters of the contemporary world.

The British on Holiday - Charter Tourism, Identity and Consumption (Paperback): Hazel Andrews The British on Holiday - Charter Tourism, Identity and Consumption (Paperback)
Hazel Andrews
R956 Discovery Miles 9 560 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This book is the only in-depth ethnographic study of British charter tourists. It is based on several months of participant observation of British charter tourists on holiday in Palmanova and Magaluf on the Mediterranean Island of Mallorca. With a focus on space, the body, and food and drink practices, the book explores the experiential nature of touristic practice which provides insight into constructions, understandings and knowledge of the self in relation to national, regional, class, and gender identities. These issues in turn highlight elements of power and control which are mainly articulated through the attempts to manipulate tourists' consumption practices by the mediators of tourists' experiences.

Anti-Museum (Paperback): Adrian Franklin Anti-Museum (Paperback)
Adrian Franklin
R763 Discovery Miles 7 630 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Anti-Museum charts the development of the anti-museum as a concept and as it has been realised in practice. Drawing on a range of case studies, including the New Museum and PS1 in New York, Mona in Australia, Art42 in Paris and Donald Judd's Marfa, the book assesses their potential to engage museum publics in new ways. Anti-museums seek to breathe relational and theatricalised vitality into the objects they exhibit, by connecting them to the contexts of their making, to their social life outside the museum, to visitors' lives via their transformative capacities for change, and by being a place of dialogue, exchange and transformation, rather than instruction. Documenting the ways in which they have been created by artists, collectors, and curators, the book also examines the extent to which anti-museums connect with other museums through the exchange of values and resources. Critically, it asks whether, after some 40 years of 'new museology', such institutions are still able to offer something fresh and valuable. Anti-Museum provides a sharp and incisive account of the anti-museum as it has been imagined, realised and experienced, and as it has relevance for understanding and working in the contemporary museum world. As such, the book will be of great interest to scholars and students engaged in the study of museums, cultural economy, inclusive urban regeneration, the democratisation of art and contemporary art. It should also appeal to museum professionals around the world.

Place Branding - Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places (Paperback): Pantea Foroudi, Chiara Mauri, Charles Dennis, T. C.... Place Branding - Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places (Paperback)
Pantea Foroudi, Chiara Mauri, Charles Dennis, T. C. Melewar
R1,392 Discovery Miles 13 920 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Place branding as a field of research is still in a state of infancy. This book seeks to address this, offering a theory of place branding based on the tourist experience, keeping in mind the roles of stakeholders, both public and private organisations and DMOs in managing the place brand. Place Branding: Connecting Tourist Experiences to Places seeks to build a customer-based view of place branding through focusing on the individual as a tourist who travels to undertake a memorable experience. The place is the key creator of this experience, which begins well before the travel-to and ends well after the travel-back. Individuals choose the places where to go, collect information on them, ask for advice and suggestions from fellow travellers, give feedback when they come back and talk a lot about their experience, spreading word-of-mouth. The book enables readers to understand how the tourist experience can be managed as a brand. Readers are exposed to a variety of problems, methodological approaches, and geographical areas, which allows them to adapt frames to different contexts and situations. This book is recommended reading for students and scholars of business, marketing, tourism, urban studies and public diplomacy, as well as practitioners, business consultants and people working in public administration and politics.

Nordic Tourism - Issues and Cases (Paperback): C. Michael Hall, Dieter K. Muller, Jarkko Saarinen Nordic Tourism - Issues and Cases (Paperback)
C. Michael Hall, Dieter K. Muller, Jarkko Saarinen
R973 Discovery Miles 9 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tourism is a major industry in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) as well as a growing field of academic study. For many cities and regions tourism is also increasingly recognised as being integral to economic, social and sustainable development. In addition, tourism also contributes to Nordic identity through destination promotion and tourism activities, including winter tourism and the tradition of access to common land, as well as specific forms of tourism, such as second homes. Nordic Tourism is the first comprehensive and accessible introduction to tourism in the region that links Nordic tourism research and concerns with key concepts in tourism studies. The book consists of eleven chapters dealing with issues ranging from, for example, marketing and policy to nature-based tourism, culture and the contribution of tourism to environmental change. The inclusion of case studies from leading Nordic researchers on specific destinations, attractions, resources, sectors and developments also provides a valuable learning tool for all students of tourism.

Tourism, Change and the Global South (Hardcover): Jarkko Saarinen, Jayne M. Rogerson Tourism, Change and the Global South (Hardcover)
Jarkko Saarinen, Jayne M. Rogerson
R4,486 Discovery Miles 44 860 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

This significant volume is the first to focus on both the changing nature of tourism and the capacity of tourism to effect change, especially in the Global South. Geographically, this changing nature of tourism is based on the transforming relationships between demand, supply and location. While this is nothing new in tourism, recent decades have intensified the changing characteristics of global tourism. From another perspective, tourism represents a change, and nowadays many localities and regions aim to use tourism as a tool for positive change, i.e. development. However, this has turned out to be a challenging task in practice, especially in the Global South context where the relationship between tourism growth and local development has often been controversial. This book looks at a host of critical concepts in one volume, such as growth and development, adaptation and resilience, sustainability and responsibility, governance and planning and heritage and destination management strategies. By understanding the drivers of change, this book sheds new insight into the promise and role of sustainability and responsibility in tourism development. This book will be of great interest to all upper-level students, academics and researchers in the fields of Tourism, Geography and Cultural and Heritage studies.

Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred - Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel... Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred - Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel (Paperback)
Michael A Di Giovine, Jaeyeon Choe
R1,371 Discovery Miles 13 710 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred: Understanding the Geographies of Religion and Spirituality in Sacred Travel examines the many ways in which pilgrimage engages with sacredness, delving beyond the officially recognized, and often religiously conceived, pilgrimage sites. As scholarship examining the lived experiences of pilgrims and tourists has demonstrated, pilgrimage need not be religious in nature, nor be officially sanctioned; rather, they can be 'hyper-meaningful' voyages, set apart from the everyday profane life-in a word, they are sacred. Separating the social category of 'religion' from the 'sacred,' this volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of scholars employing perspectives from anthropology, geography, sociology, religious studies, theology, and interdisciplinary tourism studies to theorize sacredness, its variability, and the ways in which it is officially recognized or condemned by power brokers. Rich in case studies from sacred centers throughout the world, the contributions pay close attention to the ways in which pilgrims, central authorities, site managers, locals, and other stakeholders on the ground appropriate, negotiate, shape, contest, or circumvent the powerful forces of the sacred. Delving 'beyond the officially sacred,' this collective examination of pilgrimages-both well-established and new, religious and secular, authorized and not-presents a compelling look at the interplay of secular powers and the transcendent forces of the sacred at these hyper-meaningful sites. Providing a blueprint for how work in the anthropology and geography of religion, and the fields of pilgrimage and religious tourism, may move forward, Pilgrimage beyond the Officially Sacred will be of great interest to an interdisciplinary field of scholars. The chapters were originally published as a special issue in Tourism Geographies.

Tourism and Degrowth - Towards a Truly Sustainable Tourism (Paperback): Robert Fletcher, Ivan Murray Mas, Asuncion Blanco... Tourism and Degrowth - Towards a Truly Sustainable Tourism (Paperback)
Robert Fletcher, Ivan Murray Mas, Asuncion Blanco Romero, Macia Blazquez-Salom
R1,373 Discovery Miles 13 730 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Tourism and Degrowth develops a conceptual framework and research agenda for exploring the relationship between tourism and degrowth. Rapid and uneven expansion of tourism as a response to the 2008 economic crisis has proceeded in parallel with the rise of social discontent concerning so-called "overtourism." Meanwhile, despite decades of concerted global effort to achieve sustainable development, socioecological conflicts and inequality have rarely reversed, but in fact increased in many places. Degrowth, understood as both social theory and social movement, has emerged within the context of this global crisis. However, thus far the vibrant degrowth discussion has yet to engage systematically with the tourism industry in particular, while, by the same token, tourism research has largely neglected explicit discussion of degrowth. This volume brings the two discussions together to interrogate their complementarity. Identifying a growth imperative in the basic structure of the capitalist economy, the contributors contend that mounting critique of overtourism can be understood as a structural response to the ravages of capitalist development more broadly. Debate concerning overtourism thus offers a valuable opportunity to re-politicise discussion of tourism development generally. Exploring of the potential for degrowth to facilitate a truly sustainable tourism, Tourism and Degrowth will be of great interest to scholars of tourism, environmental sustainability and development. The chapters were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism.

The Routledge Companion to Automobile Heritage, Culture, and Preservation (Paperback): Barry L. Stiefel, Jennifer Clark The Routledge Companion to Automobile Heritage, Culture, and Preservation (Paperback)
Barry L. Stiefel, Jennifer Clark
R1,550 Discovery Miles 15 500 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

The Routledge Companion to Automobile Heritage, Culture, and Preservation explores automotive heritage, its place in society, and the ways we might preserve and conserve it. Drawing on contributions from academics and practitioners around the world and comprising six sections, this volume carries the heritage discourse forward by exploring the complex and sometimes intricate place of automobiles within society. Taken as a whole, this book helps to shape how we think about automobile heritage and considers how that heritage explores a range of cultural, intellectual, emotional, and material elements well outside of the automobile body itself. Most importantly, perhaps, it questions how we might better acknowledge the importance of automotive heritage now and in the future. The Routledge Companion to Automobile Heritage, Culture, and Preservation is unique in that it juxtaposes theory with practice, academic approaches with practical experience, and recognizes that issues of preservation and conservation belong in a broad context. As such, this volume should be essential reading for both academics and practitioners with an interest in automobiles, cultural heritage, and preservation.

Healthy Living in the Alps - The Origins of Winter Tourism in Switzerland, 1860-1914 (Paperback): Susan Barton Healthy Living in the Alps - The Origins of Winter Tourism in Switzerland, 1860-1914 (Paperback)
Susan Barton
R662 Discovery Miles 6 620 Ships in 12 - 19 working days

Healthy living in the Alps examines the relationship between the search for relief from respiratory diseases, such as tuberculosis, in high alpine resorts and the development in the same places of winter sports tourism. The first winter visitors to the Swiss Alps began to arrive in the 1860s and were encouraged to take outdoor exercise as part of their cure regime. They also had healthy visitors and companions who sought recreation while the invalids were resting as part of the sanatoria routine. Demonstrating that this is not just part of the history of Switzerland but of Britain too, biographical backgrounds of British visitors to the resorts give depth and context to a history of health and winter sports tourism by looking at the kind of people who would spend months of the year in the Alps. A discussion of the application of modern technologies creates an overall view of the growth of health and sports tourism in Switzerland. -- .
