Svadhyaya (self-reflective) Breath Journal is a companion workbook
to Restoring Prana. Restoring Prana is a training manual on
transformative breathing for yoga therapists, yoga teachers and
bodyworkers and it presents a new way of understanding and applying
breath to a wide range of ailments. Each chapter in Restoring Prana
ends with specific practices that the reader is asked to track in a
breath journal and this workbook provides a pre-formulated journal
for this purpose. This workbook follows the chapter chronology of
the parent text, with the key concepts highlighted and with space
for breath charts, logs and reflection.. Svadhyaya Breath Journal
is the perfect companion to Restoring Prana and highlights the
importance of practical application of theory discussed in the
parent book.
'Sometimes called coining, spooning or scraping, Gua sha is defined
as instrument-assisted unidirectional press stroking of a
lubricated area of the body surface that intentionally creates
'transitory therapeutic petechiae' representing extravasation of
blood in the subcutis.' Gua sha has been used for centuries in
Asia, in Asian immigrant communities and by acupuncturists and
practitioners of traditional East Asian medicine worldwide. With
the expansion of traditional East Asian medicine, Gua sha has been
used over broad geographic areas and by millions of people. It is
valuable in the treatment of pain and for functional problems with
impaired movement, the prevention and treatment of acute infectious
illness, upper respiratory and digestive problems, and many acute
or chronic disorders. Research has demonstrated Gua sha radically
increases surface microperfusion that stimulates immune and
anti-inflammatory responses that persist for days after treatment.
The second edition expands on the history of Gua sha and similar
techniques used in early Western Medicine, detailing traditional
theory, purpose and application and illuminated by science that
focuses its relevance to modern clinical practice as well as
scholarly inquiry. This book brings the technique alive for
practitioners, with clear discussion of how to do it -including
correct technique, appropriate application, individualization of
treatment - and when to use it, with over 50 case examples, and
superb color photographs and line drawings that demonstrate the
technique. New chapter on immediate and significant Tongue changes
as a direct result of Gua sha Research and biomechanisms Literature
review from Chinese language as well as English language medical

Illuminating the considerations at play in determining courses of
treatment in acupuncture, this honest depiction of nine accounts of
unique cases shows how changes can happen, how the practitioner
makes choices in the moment and why the patient's collaboration and
commitment are vital. Hamwee shows how being attentive to all
aspects of patients' lives uncovers the conditions for healing, and
how it affects the responses of both patients and practitioners in
pursuit of health and wellbeing. It does not simply treat
acupuncture as concepts and techniques, but rather as a remarkable
journey of the body, mind and spirit. An honest depiction of nine
accounts of real-life cases such as back pain, chronic fatigue,
depression and irritable bowel syndrome, the book describes the
experience of acupuncture through the eyes of both practitioners
and patients.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic progressive disease
characterised by hyperglycaemia. It affects many people around the
world and creates burden for the individual as well as the economy.
Chinese medicine can be used to support the management of Type 2
diabetes mellitus symptoms. Chapter 1 of the book summarises the
conventional understanding of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, including
aetiology, diagnosis and current available treatments. This book
uses the 'whole evidence' approach to give an overview of the
available evidence for Chinese medicine treatment for Type 2
diabetes mellitus, from classical literature to clinical evidence.
Evidence from clinical studies are evaluated using high-quality and
rigorous scientific methodology. Clinical trial literature of
Chinese medicine treatments for Type 2 diabetes mellitus are
described, with treatment modalities including Chinese herbal
medicine, acupuncture and other Chinese medicine therapies. The
findings are analysed and potential implications for clinical
practice and research are explored. Experimental studies that
describe the potential mechanisms of action of key herbs are
summarised. Current evidence of Chinese medicine for Type 2
diabetes mellitus is synthesised in the final chapter, and
suggestions for contemporary clinical practice and future research
are also offered.Targeted at clinicians and students of Chinese and
integrative medicine, this book is a convenient reference that
provides comprehensive synthesis of both classical and contemporary
knowledge, which can support and be incorporated into their
clinical practice.
Research shows that Chinese medicine can be very effective in
supporting the treatment of cancer by orthodox Western methods, and
is particularly effective in alleviating many of the side effects
of treatment. Henry McGrath draws on his many years as a
practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine to explain how Chinese
medicine approaches cancer in terms of understanding and treatment.
He presents the wide range of approaches that Chinese medicine has
to offer people with cancer, and offers practical strategies to
promote the health of the body as well as methods with which to
cultivate the mind, helping the patient develop both physical and
mental wellbeing. He covers a wide range of treatments, from
acupuncture to Qigong, giving readers a sound basis on which to
explore further specific treatment. Traditional Chinese Medicine
Approaches to Cancer will be an invaluable book for people with
cancer and the medical professionals who work with them.
From an internationally known expert in the teaching and practice
of Fukushin, this is a unique book defining the therapeutic and
diagnostic significance of the abdomen in East Asian medicine.
Nigel Dawes provides a comprehensive description of the practical
application of abdominal palpation in clinical settings, as well as
offering hands-on descriptions of the precise methodology of the
abdominal exam with supporting visual aids. Focusing on specific
clinical application in the field of Kampo (Sino-Japanese Herbal
Medicine), it allows for the subtleties of the Fukushin method to
be disseminated in order to complement Traditional Chinese Medicine
training. Highly visual and practical, Fukushin is the perfect
guide for both Japanese and Chinese medicine students and
practitioners looking to develop their toolbox of skills in
