Modern design methods of Automotive Cam Design require the computation of a range of parameters. This book provides a logical sequence of steps for the derivation of the relevant equations from first principles, for the more widely used cam mechanisms. Although originally derived for use in high performance engines, this work is equally applicable to the design of mass produced automotive and other internal combustion engines. This work may also be applicable for cams used in other areas such as printing and packaging machinery. The effects of asymmetry on the manufacture of cams for finger follower and offset translating curved followers is described, and methods for transformation of cam shape data to that for a radial translating follower are given. This permits the manufacture and inspection by a wider range of CNC machines. The calculation of unsteady camshaft torques is described and an outline given for evaluation of the components for the lower engine orders. Although the theory, use and design, of reactive pendulum dampers are well documented elsewhere, these subjects have also been considered for completeness. Traditionally, the study of internal combustion engines operation has focused on the steady-state performance. However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle's operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.

This book presents systematic research results on curved shock wave-curved compression surface applied to the compression surface design of supersonic-hypersonic inlet, which is a brand new inlet design. The concept of supersonic inlet curved compression discussed originated from the author's research at the Deutsches Zentrum fur Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR SM-ES) in the early 1990s. This book introduces the research history, working characteristics, performance calculation and aerodynamic configuration design method of this compression mode in detail. It also describes method of estimating the minimum drag in inlet and drag reduction effect of curved compression and proposes a new index for evaluating unit area compression efficiency of the inlet. Further, it reviews the relevant recent research on curved compression. As such it is a valuable resource for students, researchers and scientists in the fields of hypersonic propulsion and aeronautics.

An aerial robot is a system capable of sustained flight with no direct human control and able to perform a specific task. A lighter than air robot is an aerial robot that relies on the static lift to balance its own weight. It can also be defined as a lighter than air unmanned aerial vehicle or an unmanned airship with sufficient autonomy. Lighter than air systems are particularly appealing since the energy to keep them airborne is small. They are increasingly considered for various tasks such as monitoring, surveillance, advertising, freight carrier, transportation. This book familiarizes readers with a hierarchical decoupled planning and control strategy that has been proven efficient through research. It is made up of a hierarchy of modules with well defined functions operating at a variety of rates, linked together from top to bottom. The outer loop, closed periodically, consists of a discrete search that produces a set of waypoints leading to the goal while avoiding obstacles and weighed regions. The second level smoothes this set so that the generated paths are feasible given the vehicle's velocity and accelerations limits. The third level generates flyable, timed trajectories and the last one is the tracking controller that attempts to minimize the error between the robot measured trajectory and the reference trajectory.
