This book provides a systematical and comprehensive description of
some facets of modeling, designing, analyzing and exploring the
control allocation and fault-tolerant control problems for
over-actuated spacecraft attitude control system under actuator
failures, system uncertainties and disturbances. The book intends
to provide a unified platform for understanding and applicability
of the fault-tolerant attitude control and control allocation for
different purposes in aerospace engineering and some related
fields. And it is particularly suited for readers who are
interested to learn solutions in spacecraft attitude control system
design and related engineering applications.
This book presents contributions to the 19th biannual symposium of
the German Aerospace Aerodynamics Association (STAB) and the German
Society for Aeronautics and Astronautics (DGLR). The individual
chapters reflect ongoing research conducted by the STAB members in
the field of numerical and experimental fluid mechanics and
aerodynamics, mainly for (but not limited to) aerospace
applications, and cover both nationally and EC-funded projects.
Special emphasis is given to collaborative research projects
conducted by German scientists and engineers from universities,
research-establishments and industries. By addressing a number of
cutting-edge applications, together with the relevant physical and
mathematics fundamentals, the book provides readers with a
comprehensive overview of the current research work in the field.
Though the book's primary emphasis is on the aerospace context, it
also addresses further important applications, e.g. in ground
transportation and energy.
This book presents approaches to address key challenges based on a
vehicle level view and with a special emphasis on Drive-by-Wire
systems. The design and testing of modern vehicle electronics are
becoming more and more demanding due to increasing
interdependencies among components and the safety criticality of
tasks. The development towards Drive-by-Wire functionalities in
vehicles with multiple actuators for vehicle control further
increases the challenge. The book explicitly takes into account the
interactions between components and aims at bridging the gap
between the need to generate additional customer benefits and the
effort to achieve functional safety. The book follows a twofold
approach: on the one side, it presents a toolchain to support
efficient further development of novel functionalities for
Drive-by-Wire vehicles. The toolchain comprises appropriate
software tools and scaled and full-scale experimental vehicles. On
the other side, development towards functionally safe and flexible
Drive-by-Wire vehicles is addressed by proposing a top-down
designed architecture for vehicle electronics that is enabled by
suitable mechanisms. The resulting goal achievement with regard to
functional safety is evaluated based on a novel hierarchical
approach.
This outstanding thesis characterises the aerodynamic flow around a
container freight train; investigating how changing container
loading configurations affect the magnitude of aerodynamic forces
measured on a container. 1/25th scale moving-model freight train
experiments were carried out at the University of Birmingham's
TRAIN rig facility to investigate slipstream velocities and static
pressure, as well as measuring, using a specifically designed
on-board pressure monitoring system, the aerodynamic loads on
containers. Results were compared with full scale data and assessed
in terms European standards for trackside worker and passenger
safety limits. Rail vehicle aerodynamic studies have tended to
previously focus on high speed passenger trains in line with
increases in train speed. The research presented within this thesis
highlights the issues associated with the aerodynamic development
around a freight train, providing the foundations for further
research and a basis from which to develop international safety
standards in relation to freight, as well as high speed trains.

This book describes systematically telemetry theory and methods for
aircraft in flight test. Test targets of telemetry in flight test
include airplanes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles,
aerostatics, carrier-based aircraft, airborne equipment (systems),
weapon systems, (powered) aircraft scale models, aircraft external
stores (e.g., nacelle, auxiliary tanks), and ejection seats and so
on. The book collects the author's telemetry research work and
presents methods that have been verified in real-world tests. The
book has eight chapters: the first three discuss the theoretical
basis of telemetry, while the other five focus on the methods used
in flight tests.Unlike other professional textbooks, this book
describes the practical telemetry theory and combines theory and
engineering practice to offer a comprehensive and systematic
overview of telemetry in flight test for readers.
This book focuses on systems engineering, systems thinking, and
how that thinking can be learned in practice. It describes a novel
analytical framework based on activity theory for understanding how
systems thinking evolves and how it can be improved to support
multidisciplinary teamwork in the context of system development and
systems engineering. This method, developed using data collected
over four years from three different small space systems
engineering organizations, can be applied in a wide variety of work
activities in the context of engineering design and beyond in order
to monitor and analyze multidisciplinary interactions in working
teams over time. In addition, the book presents a practical
strategy called WAVES (Work Activity for a Evolution of Systems
engineering and thinking), which fosters the practical learning of
systems thinking with the aim of improving process development in
different industries. The book offers an excellent resource for
researchers and practitioners interested in systems thinking and in
solutions to support its evolution. Beyond its contribution to a
better understanding of systems engineering, systems thinking and
how it can be learned in real-world contexts, it also introduce a
suitable analysis framework that helps to bridge the gap between
the latest social science research and engineering research.
This book provides cutting-edge insights into autonomous vehicles
and road terrain classification, and introduces a more rational and
practical method for identifying road terrain. It presents the MRF
algorithm, which combines the various sensors' classification
results to improve the forward LRF for predicting upcoming road
terrain types. The comparison between the predicting LRF and its
corresponding MRF show that the MRF multiple-sensor fusion method
is extremely robust and effective in terms of classifying road
terrain. The book also demonstrates numerous applications of road
terrain classification for various environments and types of
autonomous vehicle, and includes abundant illustrations and models
to make the comparison tables and figures more accessible.

automation are considered beneficial for road safety, energy
efficiency, productivity, convenience and social inclusion. The
necessary key technologies in the fields of object-recognition
systems, data processing and infrastructure communication have been
consistently developed over the recent years and are mostly
available on the market today. However, there is still a need for
substantial research and development, e.g. with interactive maps,
data processing, functional safety and the fusion of different data
sources. Driven by stakeholders in the IT industry, intensive
efforts to accelerate the introduction of road vehicle automation
are currently underway.
This book explores the outcomes on flow control research activities
carried out within the framework of two EU-funded projects focused

is to assess the potential of the passive- and active-flow control
methods for reduction of fuel consumption by a helicopter. The
research scope encompasses the fields of structural dynamics, fluid
flow dynamics, and actuators with control. Research featured in
this volume demonstrates an experimental and numerical approach
with a strong emphasis on the verification and validation of
numerical models. The book is ideal for engineers, students, and
researchers interested in the multidisciplinary field of flow
control.

This book is useful both for those who want to get initial
information on the measurement of the antenna parameters, and for
specialists directly involved in the experimental determination of
the antenna parameters from the results of measuring the
amplitude-phase distribution in the near zone of the antennas.
Currently, the near-field method is the most common one for antenna
measurements. In most books, an academic approach is given to the
issue under consideration and it is difficult to use them for the
direct organization of measurements. In many others, specific
narrow issues are considered that are accessible to understanding
only by highly qualified engineers/readers. The purpose of this
book is to get rid of the above disadvantages by offering the
reader a more accessible exposition and formulas by which
appropriate computer programs can be written with minimal effort.
The contents of this book allow interested specialists to be not
only users of the near-field measuring facilities, but also help in
understanding the principles of their work. This book is intended
for engineers and specialists whose activities are related to
experimental testing of radio characteristics of complex antenna
systems, especially near-field measurements, and is also useful as
a textbook for senior students in the field of "radioelectronics"
and "radiophysics."
This book explains theoretical derivations and presents expressions
for fluid and convective turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids in
various internal and external flow situations involving different
types of geometries, such as the smooth/rough circular pipes,
annular ducts, curved tubes, vertical flat plates, and channels.
Understanding the methodology of the analyses facilitates
appreciation for the rationale used for deriving expressions of
parameters relevant to the turbulent flow of mildly elastic fluids.
This knowledge serves as a driving force for developing new ideas,
investigating new situations, and extending theoretical analyses to
other unexplored areas of the rheology of mildly elastic drag
reducing fluids. The book suits a range of functions--it can be used
to teach elective upper-level undergraduate or graduate courses for
chemical engineers, material scientists, mechanical engineers, and
polymer scientists; guide researchers unexposed to this alluring
and interesting area of drag reduction; and serve as a reference to
all who want to explore and expand the areas dealt with in this
book.
