The Green City - Sustainable Homes, Sustainable Suburbs (Paperback): Nicholas Low, Brendon Gleeson, Ray Green, Darko Radovic The Green City - Sustainable Homes, Sustainable Suburbs (Paperback)
Nicholas Low, Brendon Gleeson, Ray Green, Darko Radovic
R1,184 Discovery Miles 11 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

- What does the global agenda of sustainable development mean for the urban spaces where most people live, work and move?
- Can we keep what we love about city and suburban life and still save the environment?
- What new methods of planning and building will be needed in the 21st century?
A genuinely innovative book, "The Green City," considers and answers these three basic questions, and challenges the way we think about our cities, the environment and planning for the future.
It presents a new and controversial challenge to ideas about sustainability and rejects both economic and environmental orthodoxy. In a nutshell, its message is that the sustainable city can be built by a thousand well-directed small changes. To illustrate this, "The Green City "draws on diverse practical case material from Australia, Europe the USA and Asia, and features a photographic essay of 34 colour photographs.
In "The GreenCity" a team of city-building professionals explain in straightforward terms how one idea - ecological sustainability - can be embodied in the everyday life of homes, communities and cities to make a better future.

From Eco-Cities to Sustainable City-Regions - China's Uncertain Quest for an Ecological Civilization (Hardcover): Ernest... From Eco-Cities to Sustainable City-Regions - China's Uncertain Quest for an Ecological Civilization (Hardcover)
Ernest J. Yanarella, Richard S. Levine
R3,154 Discovery Miles 31 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A political scientist and an urban architect explore China's odyssey to become an ecological civilization and transform its massive, unsustainable, urbanization process into one that creates hundreds of eco-cities. The resulting From Eco-Cities to Sustainable City-Regions is the first book-length study combining analysis of politics and power, urban design and planning issues derived from the co-authors' interdisciplinary research, and on-site fieldwork from their political science and architectural area specialties. Begun in 1986, little-known policy actions have taken shape in the building of 285 eco-cities--and growing. What are the driving forces of these innovative developments? How is China going about converting its teeming urban areas into replicable and showcase cities? Can these new policy initiatives overcome the damage done to its air, waterways, and land, while significantly reducing public health dangers to its inhabitants? In searching for means for the People s Republic of China to take the next step from eco-cities to sustainable city-regions, the co-authors assess the potential success of China's present course and offer key recommendations for Chinese political leaders, urban planners, and citizen stakeholders to make the transition to a sustainable future for its people and the rest of the world. The primary market for this book will be eco-researchers, Asian studies scholars and teachers, eco- and urban architects, environmental and urban policy professionals, and advanced undergraduates in environmental and sustainability studies or sciences programs. The interdisciplinary reach and critical framework of analysis will appeal to a wide variety of scholars interested in Chinese ecological strides and seeking a critical assessment of its potential.

Accessibility and Spatial Interaction (Hardcover): Ana Condeco-Melhorado, Aura Reggiani, Javier Gutierrez Accessibility and Spatial Interaction (Hardcover)
Ana Condeco-Melhorado, Aura Reggiani, Javier Gutierrez
R3,142 Discovery Miles 31 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The concept of accessibility is linked to the level of opportunities available for spatial interaction (flows of people, goods or information) between a set of locations, through a physical and/or digital transport infrastructure network. Accessibility has proved to be a crucial tool for understanding the framework of sustainability policy in light of best practice planning and decision-making processes. Methods such as cost-benefit analysis, multi-criteria analysis and risk analysis can benefit greatly from embedding accessibility results. This book presents a cohesive collection of recent studies, modeling and discussing spatial interaction by means of accessibility indicators. Three key areas of information are discussed: (i) methods and data sources used to estimate spatial interaction through accessibility indicators; (ii) spatial and social dimension of accessibility; (iii) accessibility as a driver of spatial interaction. Accessibility and Spatial Interaction demonstrates the integration of spatial economics with transport and planning science, using accessibility concepts and measures in exciting new ways. Policy makers and practitioners in transport and urban planning will appreciate this fresh level of insight, and academics in economics, sociology and geography will find this book an important reference point. Architecture and Participation (Hardcover): Peter Blundell-Jones, Doina Petrescu, Jeremy Till Architecture and Participation (Hardcover)
Peter Blundell-Jones, Doina Petrescu, Jeremy Till
R4,368 Discovery Miles 43 680 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A participative approach to architecture challenges many of the normative values of traditional architecture and, in particular, issues of authorship, control, aesthetics and the role of the user. The book explores how a participative approach may lead to new spatial conditions, as well as to new types of architectural practices and investigates the way that the user has been included in the design process. Where many architectural books concentrate on formal or aesthetic issues, this book explicitly opens up the social and political aspects of our built environment, and the way that the eventual users may shape it. As government policies throughout the world call for more involvement by people in the making of their environment, the issue of participation has become of central concern to architects, clients, funders, users and government officers. However, participation often remains as a token gesture; this book promises to make a major contribution to the field by arguing for a more considered approach to architectural participation. Architecture and Participation brings together leading international practitioners and theorists in the field, ranging from the 1960s pioneers of p

Water Supply in a Mega-City - A Political Ecology Analysis of Shanghai (Hardcover): Michael Webber, Jon Barnett, Brian... Water Supply in a Mega-City - A Political Ecology Analysis of Shanghai (Hardcover)
Michael Webber, Jon Barnett, Brian Finlayson, Mark Wang
R3,147 Discovery Miles 31 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

With the increasing threat of depleted and contaminated water supplies around the world, this book provides a timely and much needed analysis of how cities should manage this precious resource. Integrating the environmental, economic, political and socio-cultural dimensions of water management, the authors outline how future mega-city systems can maintain a high quality of life for its residents. With the rapidly evolving and wealthy Shanghai as the key example, the paradox between the wealth of a city and the quality of its water is uncovered. With a multidisciplinary and multi-scale analysis, the supply of water to cities is discussed in the context of rivers, households, corporations, government and infrastructures. Chapters include the influence of household water use, the political economy of water management, the sources and management of pollution, catchment dynamics, and a Bayesian model for calculating future demand. This comprehensive study shows how essential water management will be to new, developing and expanding cities in the foreseeable future. Water Supply in a Mega-City will be of interest to researchers from across social, natural and engineering sciences interested in the theoretical and practical management of this essential resource in large cities, as well as those interested in the way cities respond to changing environmental conditions.

The Routledge Handbook of Urban Logistics (Hardcover): Jason Monios, Lucy Budd, Stephen Ison The Routledge Handbook of Urban Logistics (Hardcover)
Jason Monios, Lucy Budd, Stephen Ison
R6,424 Discovery Miles 64 240 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Routledge Handbook of Urban Logistics offers a state of the art, comprehensive overview of the discipline of urban and city logistics. The COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in internet shopping in particular has placed new demands on urban logistics which require innovative technological and policy responses. Similarly, the necessity for sustainable urban logistics offers both a challenge and opportunity for development and seeks to address traffic congestion, local air quality, traffic related degradation, the use of energy, safety aspects and noise. Featuring contributions from world-leading, international scholars, the chapters examine concepts, issues and ideas across six topic areas that reflect the increasingly diverse nature of current research and thinking in urban logistics: key features of urban logistics, freight transport, sectors in urban logistics, technical aspects, policy, and environmental and social sustainability. Each chapter provides an overview of current knowledge, identifies issues, discusses the relevant debates in urban logistics and the future research agenda. This handbook offers a single repository on the current state of knowledge, written from a practical perspective, utilising theory that is applied and developed using real-work examples. It is an essential reference for researchers, academics and students working in all areas of urban logistics, from policy and planning to technology and sustainability, in addition to industry practitioners looking to develop their professional knowledge.

Waste and Discards in the Asia Pacific Region - Social and Cultural Perspectives (Hardcover): Viktor Pal, Iris Borowy Waste and Discards in the Asia Pacific Region - Social and Cultural Perspectives (Hardcover)
Viktor Pal, Iris Borowy
R4,047 Discovery Miles 40 470 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book uncovers, explores and analyses the cultural and social factors and values that lie behind waste making, recycling and disposal in the Asia Pacific region, where impressive economic growth has led to significant increases in production, consumption and concomitant waste production. This volume demonstrates the immense scope of waste as a multi-sectoral phenomenon, covering discussions on food, menstrual products, sewage, electronics, scrap, nuclear waste, plastics, and even entire villages as they are submerged underwater by dam building, considered expendable in favour of economic growth. It discusses the wide range of approaches and contexts through which people interact with waste, including socio-economic analysis, participatory observation, laboratory science, art, video, installations, literature and photography. Case studies focusing on India, China and Japan, in addition to other regional examples, demonstrate the ubiquity of waste, materially and geographically. It examines the duality of waste management, fostering community building while simultaneously excluding marginalised groups; how it can be linked to efforts creating circular economies, to then reappear in oceanic garbage patches; or technical waste repurposed for high-tech laboratory research before being discarded once again. This timely and wide-ranging collection of essays will be an important read for scholars, researchers and students in sustainability, development studies, discard studies, and social and cultural history, particularly focusing on countries in the Asia-Pacific.

After Belonging - Architecture, Nation, Difference (Hardcover): Samir Pandya After Belonging - Architecture, Nation, Difference (Hardcover)
Samir Pandya
R3,688 Discovery Miles 36 880 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book breaks new ground in demystifying the relationship between architecture, nationhood, and other forms of collective identity. It attempts to extricate the oppressive ideology of national identity entrenched within the very idea of architecture. Authors investigate themes such as cosmopolitanism, diaspora, geopolitics, globalisation, hybridity, and race. Certain chapters expose highly regulated environments which support cultural hegemony, such as the context of a hostel for 'coloured colonial seamen' in London, the illusionary rhetoric of 'authenticity' used to legitimise architectural conservation, and the role of the mosque as mediator between a post-war, multi-racial Britain, and ideas of nationhood. Others engage subjects at the urban scale, including the phenomena of universities transcending their nation-building roots to become agents of cosmopolitan urbanism, and how the discursive context of a high-profile yet unrealised modernist office-block in the City of London sustained a culture of British faux-nationalism. Remaining chapters adopt a postcolonial lens, with one examining how particular works of literary fiction reimagine notions of 'place' within an emerging intercultural nation, and another exploring the tense relationship between identitarian form and affective atmospheres to suggest the possibility of anti-essentialist experiences of architecture. Together, these perspectives propose an alternative vision of the City, where neither state-sponsored identity politics nor right-wing populism determine the cultural context within which architects design for our collective urban experience. This book will be of interest to researchers and advanced students of Architecture, Anthropology, History, Human Geography, Politics, Sociology, and Urban Studies. The chapters in this book, except for chapter 1, were first published in the journal National Identities.

Alternative Planning History and Theory (Hardcover): Dorina Pojani Alternative Planning History and Theory (Hardcover)
Dorina Pojani
R3,701 Discovery Miles 37 010 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book includes twelve newly commissioned and carefully curated chapters each of which presents an alternative planning history and theory written from the perspective of groups that have been historically marginalized or neglected. In teaching planning history and theory, many planning programs tend to follow the planning cannon - a normative perspective that mostly accounts for the experience of white, Anglo, Christian, middle class, middle aged, heterosexual, able-bodied, men. This book takes a unique approach. It provides alternative planning history and theory timelines for each of the following groups: women, the poor, LGBTQ+ communities, people with disabilities, older adults, children, religious minorities, people of color, migrants, Indigenous people, and colonized peoples (in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Anglophone Africa). To allow for easy cross-comparison, chapters follow a similar chronological structure, which extends from the late 19th century into the present. The authors provide insights into the core planning issues in each time period, and review the different stances and critiques. The book is a must-read for planning students and instructors. Each chapter includes the following pedagogical features: (1) a boxed case study which presents a recent example of positive change to showcase theory in practice; (2) a table which lays out an alternative planning history and theory timeline for the group covered in the chapter; and (3) suggestions for further study comprising non-academic sources such as books, websites, and films.

Design First - Design-based planning for communities (Paperback): David Walters, Linda Brown Design First - Design-based planning for communities (Paperback)
David Walters, Linda Brown
R1,670 Discovery Miles 16 700 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Well-grounded in the history and theory of Anglo-American urbanism, this illustrated textbook sets out objectives, policies and design principles for planning new communities and redeveloping existing urban neighborhoods. Drawing from their extensive experience, the authors explain how better plans (and consequently better places) can be created by applying the three-dimensional principles of urban design and physical place-making to planning problems. Design First uses case studies from the authors' own professional projects to demonstrate how theory can be turned into effective practice, using concepts of traditional urban form to resolve contemporary planning and design issues in American communities. The book is aimed at architects, planners, developers, planning commissioners, elected officials and citizens -- and, importantly, students of architecture and planning -- with the objective of reintegrating three-dimensional design firmly back into planning practice.

Writing Spaces - Discourses of Architecture, Urbanism and the Built Environment, 1960-2000 (Hardcover): C. Greig Crysler Writing Spaces - Discourses of Architecture, Urbanism and the Built Environment, 1960-2000 (Hardcover)
C. Greig Crysler
R4,214 Discovery Miles 42 140 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Writing Spaces examines and compares discourses of architecture, urbanism and the built environment between 1960 and 2000, a period in which economies and cultures in the world became ever more interdependent; in which technologies revolutionised production and communications, and when the social and spatial organisation of built environments and cities were massively transformed.

As a response to these developments, social theory has been recast, arguing that space is the medium of social change and hence political struggle.

Public and Private Spaces of the City (Hardcover): Ali Madanipour Public and Private Spaces of the City (Hardcover)
Ali Madanipour
R5,097 Discovery Miles 50 970 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The subdivision of our social world and the spaces we inhabit into public and private spheres is one of the key features of how a society organises itself. This affects individuals' mental states and experiences, regulates their behaviour, and superimposes a long-lasting structure onto human societies. This book sets out to find out how and why social space is subdivided in this way and to explore the nature of each realm as defined by spatial and symbolic boundaries.

To understand this division, the investigation is conducted along three scales: spatial scale (body, home, neighbourhood, city), degrees of exclusivity and openness (from the most private to the most public), and modes of social encounter and association with space (personal, interpersonal, impersonal). We start from the private, interior space of the mind and move outwards to the extensions of the body in space, the personal space. Then we visit the home, the domains of privacy, intimacy and property, followed by interpersonal spaces of sociability among strangers, communal spaces of the neighbourhood, the material and institutional public sphere and the impersonal spaces of the city.

As the shape of the city and the characteristics of urban life are influenced by the way public and private distinction is made, the role of urban designers becomes ever more significant. By establishing a flexible and elaborate boundary between the two realms, urbanism can be enriched, where the danger of encroachment by private interests into the public realm and the threat of public intrusion into the private sphere are both minimised and carefully managed.

Culture, Spaces, and People - Urban Dynamics in Contemporary India (Hardcover): Daksh Jain Culture, Spaces, and People - Urban Dynamics in Contemporary India (Hardcover)
Daksh Jain
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume discusses the nuances of cultural phenomena in the transforming urban landscape of Indian cities. It focuses on the role of globalization, transitioning economic patterns, National Urban policies in changing their urban landscape. The volume argues how culture is an important determinant of the emergent urban patterns. It decodes and determines the human centered inter-linkages such as social, cultural, economic, and political and their reactions in the transformations in urban morphology to understand the spatial perspective and visualization of new emerging cultural phenomena. The book reflects on the contemporary global forces and currently operational national urban policies that have enforced new dynamics of consumption, lifestyles, and institutions. Further, it also examines the ways in which these forces come together to create new hybrid cultures which manifest in spatial practices. With detailed case studies of different cities, this book will be of interest to students, teachers, and researchers of urban planning, cultural studies, urban sociology, urban geography, history, urban design, urban conservation, and policy studies. It will also be useful for professionals working in the field of smart cities in India and abroad, planning authorities, urban scientists, cultural tourists, artists, local cultural enthusiasts, and those interested in studying the urban conditions of Indian cities.

Urban Futures - Critical Commentaries on shaping Cities (Hardcover): Tim Hall, Malcolm Miles Urban Futures - Critical Commentaries on shaping Cities (Hardcover)
Tim Hall, Malcolm Miles
R3,919 Discovery Miles 39 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Urban Futures brings together commentaries from a wide range of contemporary disciplines and fields relevant to urban culture, form and society. The book concerns cities in the broadest sense, not just as buildings and spaces, but also as processes and events or sites of occupation, in which meanings are constructed in many ways. The contributors draw on their specialist areas of research to inform current debate, but they also speculate as to how cities will be shaped in the 21st century.
Specific areas of research include homeless people's organisations and restoration ecology in brownfield sites in the USA, post-industrial urban landscapes, post-industrial economics, tourism and cultural planning. The book allows each writer to state their own conclusions, but together they suggest that tomorrow's cities will, while remaining locations of difference and contestation, be rapidly evolving systems in which dwellers assume increasing responsibilities and power.

Thomas Sieverts
R4,354 Discovery Miles 43 540 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the characteristics of today's built environment: no longer simply a city but increasingly large conurbations made up of a number of development clusters, linked by transport routes. The diffusion of the once compact city into a city web, the 'meta city' is mirrored by changes in society from communities with strong social cohesion and interest in their towns and cities to individuals pursing their own goals, with global social links and little interest in their city.

Cities Without Cities - An Interpretation of the Zwischenstadt (Paperback, English language ed): Thomas Sieverts Cities Without Cities - An Interpretation of the Zwischenstadt (Paperback, English language ed)
Thomas Sieverts
R1,556 Discovery Miles 15 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book investigates the characteristics of today's built environment: no longer simply a city but increasingly large conurbations made up of a number of development clusters, linked by transport routes. The diffusion of the once compact city into a city web, the 'meta city' is mirrored by changes in society from communities with strong social cohesion and interest in their towns and cities to individuals pursuing their own goals, with global social links and little interest in their own town or city other than the quality of their personal space.
The account is complex and on a number of levels; social, philosophical, economic and environmental. The difficulties in managing or even controlling the city web, divided arbitrarily into areas of limited size and political power, are enormous. Areas compete with each other rather than co-operate. The book provides a better understanding of this new type of urban form and argues for a change in planning systems for better management.

Governance of Europe's City Regions - Planning, Policy & Politics (Hardcover): Tassilo Herrschel, Peter Newman Governance of Europe's City Regions - Planning, Policy & Politics (Hardcover)
Tassilo Herrschel, Peter Newman
R5,085 Discovery Miles 50 850 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Governance of Europe's City Regions is a structured overview of current debates on cities and regions. It provides an understanding of trends at different spatial scales and explores a range of different European experiences to consider prospects for the effective governance of city regions. Contrasts arise for different economic and spatial contexts, and from the complex interactions of national, regional and local politics and policy.
The book introduces readers to and summarises a wide interdisciplinary literature. It clarifies contemporary debates about regionalism and contributes new insights into the theory of 'new regionalism'. The authors' argue that the city region scale continues to be contested and that no single governance model will fit all experiences. They also assert that there is need for a careful appreciation within city regions of the interactions of local institutions, their constitutional context and their economic prospects.

Solar Energy Houses - Strategies, Technologies, Examples (Paperback): Anne-Grete Hestnes, Robert Hastings, Bjarne Saxhof Solar Energy Houses - Strategies, Technologies, Examples (Paperback)
Anne-Grete Hestnes, Robert Hastings, Bjarne Saxhof
R3,022 R2,142 Discovery Miles 21 420 Save R880 (29%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Passive and active solar strategies together with the adoption of energy conservation measures and the integration of new materials and technologies can lead to a dramatic reduction of 75-90 per cent in the energy consumption of the buildings. The objective of Task 13 of the IEA's Solar Heating and Cooling Programme was to advance solar building technologies and demonstrate this potential by designing and constructing buildings that met very low energy consumption targets while maintaining a good indoor climate. This revised second edition of this book presents the findings of the Task 13 experts and includes the results of the monitoring programme, conducted to determine the effectives of the techniques and strategies adopted. This new edition also provides a detailed explanation of this research programme in terms of how far the expectations of the Task experts were met and highlights the specific successes and lessons learned from the project.

Urban Regeneration, Community Power and the (In)Significance of 'Race' (Paperback): Paul J. Maginn Urban Regeneration, Community Power and the (In)Significance of 'Race' (Paperback)
Paul J. Maginn
R954 Discovery Miles 9 540 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The concepts of community consultation and participation have come to dominate academic and policy debate about urban regeneration partnerships. However, there has been relatively little discussion about the nature of 'community power' within regeneration partnerships. Adopting an ethnographic approach in the study of community participation and power and the significance of 'race' in three ethnically diverse neighbourhoods in London, this book highlights that there has been a 'pluralistic turn' in British urban regeneration policy. Local communities, often portrayed as the least powerful partner within partnerships, are shown to use various strategies to influence decision-making, thus giving rise to a new typology of pluralism - 'pragmatic'; 'hyper-' and 'paternalistic'. Furthermore, the significance of 'race' (and racism) within community forums and regeneration partnerships is challenged. The playful use of the term (In) Significance in the title is linked to the argument that, although racism exists, 'race' does not always matter.

Intelligent Cities - Innovation, Knowledge Systems and Digital Spaces (Paperback): Nicos Komninos Intelligent Cities - Innovation, Knowledge Systems and Digital Spaces (Paperback)
Nicos Komninos
R1,660 Discovery Miles 16 600 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

At the turn of the century some cities and regions in Europe, Japan and the US, displayed an exceptional capacity to incubate and develop new knowledge and innovations. The favourable environment for research, technology and innovation created in these areas was not immediately obvious, yet it was of great significance for a development based on knowledge, learning, and innovation. Intelligent Cities focuses on these environments of innovation, and the major models (technopoles, innovating regions, intelligent cities) for creating an environment-supporting technology, innovation, learning, and knowledge-based development.
The introduction and the first chapter deal with innovation as an environmental condition, and with the geography and typology of islands of innovation. The next three Parts focus on the theoretical paradigms and the planning models of the 'industrial district', the innovating region', and the 'intelligent city', which offer three alternative ways to create an environment of innovation.
