For centuries, the Arthurian legends have fascinated and inspired countless writers, artists, and readers, many of whom first became acquainted with the story as youngsters. From the numerous retellings of Malory and versions of Tennyson for young people to the host of illustrated volumes to which the Arthurian Revival gave rise. From the Arthurian youth groups for boys (and eventually for girls) run by schools and churches to the school operas, theater pieces, and other entertainment for younger audiences; and from the Arthurian juvenile fiction sequences and series to the films and television shows featuring Arthurian characters, children have learned about the world of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Much research has been done on the social messages conveyed to children reading or listening to fairy tales. In this highly original study, the emphasis shifts from content to linguistic expression. The language and linguistic organization of a dozen versions, old and new, of the Little Red Riding Hood story are analyzed using a variety of theoretical approaches, including Critical Discourse Analysis, Conversational Analysis, Functional Grammar and Critical Stylistics, to uncover the contribution of fairy tales to the discourse of gender relations over time.
Essentials of Young Adult Literature, 3/e gives readers an engaging and succinct yet comprehensive overview of young adult literature. Using a genre approach and an emphasis on immersion in literature, it prepares tomorrow's teachers to integrate literature into middle and high school curricula. This book focuses on reading young adult books, not just talking about them. It presents short chapters that include extensive recommended booklists organized by genre and topic, and relates young adult literature to current issues such as standards, the literary canon, censorship, close reading, critical literacy, and resistant readers.
The fairy tales collected by the brothers Grimm are among the best known and most widely-read stories in western literature. In recent years commentators such as Bruno Bettelheim have, usually from a psychological perspective, pondered the underlying meaning of the stories, why children are so enthralled by them, and what effect they have on the developing child. In this book, Ronald Murphy takes five of the best-known tales ("Hansel and Gretel", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Cinderella", "Snow White", and "Sleeping Beauty") and shows that the Grimms saw them as Christian fables. Murphy examines the arguments of previous interpreters of the tales, and demonstrates how they missed the Grimms' intention. His own readings of the five so-called "magical" tales reveal them as the beautiful and inspiring "documents of faith" that the Grimms meant them to be. Offering an entirely new perspective on these often-analyzed tales, Murphy's book will appeal to those concerned with the moral and religious education of children, to students and scholars of folk literature and children's literature, and to the many general readers who are captivated by fairy tales and their meanings.
The fairy tales of Perrault--stories that are known and loved
around the world--are now available in this scintillating paperback
edition, with twenty-six stunning illustrations by Gustave Dore.
The superb translation by Christopher Betts exactly captures the
tone and flavor of Perrault's world, and the delightful spirit of
the originals. In addition to the classic prose tales--including
The Sleeping Beauty in the Wood, Little Red Riding-Hood, Bluebeard,
Puss in Boots, Cinderella, and Hop o' my Thumb--this new
translation adds Perrault's tales in verse: a long poem on the
subject of Patient Griselda; the notorious Donkey-Skin; and the
comic Three Silly Wishes. Bett's introduction deftly illuminates
why in Perrault's hands these humble fairy tales have such great
imaginative power, showing how they transmute into vivid fantasies
the hidden fears and conflicts by which children are
affected--fears of abandonment, conflicts with siblings and
parents--and resolve so satisfactorily the problems experienced by
children while growing up. The volume also includes appendices on
related tales and selected variants, a bibliography, chronology,
and notes.
Pop-up and Movable Books (1993) was a pioneering work in the move to document this novel yet ubiquitous format. These fascinating volumes have been a frequent, yet under-scrutinized phenomenon from the Victorian era through to today. This supplement updates the work begun in the 1993 publication. Building upon the first volume, it indexes books published between 1991 and 1997. Books are accessible through three indexes: title, date, and series. The first volume should be consulted for titles older than 1991. Praise for the first edition: "...a pioneering attempt to codify a type of book that has previously slipped by librarians and bibliographers almost totally disregarded." -ANTIQUARIAN BOOK MONTHLY "...an essential tool for collectors...a useful addition to any library with an interest in children's literature or the history of book design. All in all, it is a well-organized, well-indexed, and thoroughly professional reference work." -POPULAR CULTURE IN LIBRARIES
The cultural impact of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series transformed a generation of young people into readers and fans, who were able to interact with one another in unprecedented ways as digital natives. And now the Harry Potter generation has come of age, poised to become parents, teachers, writers, and critics. As the essays in this collection observe, this generation uses the knowledge absorbed from Rowling's narrative to negotiate their life experiences as they take their places as society's adults. Throughout this volume, scholars analyze how the Harry Potter series has shaped this generation's views on everything from celebrity to political resistance; from reading to memory to identity; from amusement parks to fan and pedagogical spaces online; from how they understand the past to how they will shape their future. Many of the essays are penned by members of the Harry Potter generation itself, detailing the myriad ways this fantasy series has pervaded their lives. Expansive and well-researched, this collection offers insight - not only into the Harry Potter novels-but also and perhaps more importantly, into the way these novels have affected this generation's understanding of their place in the world and their capacity to create it anew.

On the occasion of Hans Christian Andersen's bicentenary the theme chosen was Hans Christian Andersen between Children's Literature and Adult Literature. At previous conferences focus had been exclusively on Andersen as poet and writer for adults, in which capacity he wrote novels, theatre plays, poems, and travel books, just as his fairy tales and stories were meant for all ages. But faced with the world-wide celebration in 2005 it seemed proper to include the child aspects of his works in the scholarly discussion. In its wide range of themes dealing with both adult and child aspects of Andersen's texts, this volume, consisting of papers read at the Odense Conference in 2005, endeavours to do justice to the whole of Andersen, whose immortal genius has a message for young and old all over the world.
