This book contains selected, peer-reviewed papers presented at the 11th International Conference on Energy Efficiency in Motor Systems (EEMODS'19), held in Tokyo, Japan from 17-19 September 2019. As with previous conferences in this series, EEMODS'19 provided a scientific forum to discuss and debate the latest developments and impacts of electrical motor systems on energy and the environment, energy efficiency policies and programmes adopted and planned, standards (including ISO 50.001), and the technical and commercial advances made in the dissemination and penetration of energy-efficient motor systems. Topics covered include: technologies, research and innovation in the areas of electric motors from life cycle costing to 3D printing to artificial intelligence/machine learning-based monitoring systems; emerging motor technologies; power electronics and drives; pump systems, including life cycle costing, energy efficiency improvements, maintenance, and operation for industrial, water supply and treatment, building, and irrigation; compressed air systems; fans /exhaust systems; refrigeration systems maintenance and operation; mechanical power transmission; motors in household appliances and HVAC (residential and commercial); motors and drives for transport applications including policies, programmes, regulation, and international standards; industrial management policies and standards; motor system audit and verification; policies, programmes and financing: analysis of motor system energy use and greenhouse gas emissions for motor systems, e-vehicles and related charging infrastructure; harmonization of global motor efficiency test standards; evaluation of utility programmes for improving energy efficiency in motor systems; and policy implementation, market surveillance and enforcement mechanisms, including case studies. The conference is international by nature and aims to attract high quality and innovative contributions from all corners of the globe, while the papers facilitate the development of new technologies, policies and strategies to increase energy efficiency.
This book contains the research report of the DFG Research Unit FOR 1845 (2014-2020) of the Universities of Bremen and Hannover. The thematic focus lies on speeding up ultra-precision machining technology by following a holistic approach to high-performance cutting. This includes ultra-precision milling at high spindle speeds (>10000 rpm), precision tool setting mechanisms for multi-cutting-edge diamond milling tools, magnetic levitation technology for high velocity feed axes, and dedicated control strategies for error identification and compensation at high speeds. Furthermore, automation and measurement aspects of the machine setup process especially for precision balancing of the spindle rotors are presented. This is the story of how for more than a hundred years steam power played a vital role in the development of road transport. It all began with tentative attempts to build steam carriages by pioneers such as Cugnot in France and Trevithick in Britain, and in the early part of the nineteenth century there were significant attempts to develop steam carriages and omnibuses. That these attempts ultimately failed was largely due to opposition by road authorities and draconian legislation. Steam power did, however, find a real purpose in agriculture, where the traction engine was used for a variety of tasks from towing and working threshing machines, to ploughing. Once the value of the traction engine had been established, it soon found a use in many parts of the world for heavy haulage work and appeared in an exotic guise as the showman's engine. The latter was not only used to haul rides to fairgrounds but also powered a dynamo that could light up the fair at night. By the end of the nineteenth century, steam on the road took on a new life with the development of steam cars and trucks. For a time they vied the new internal combustion engine for supremacy on the road. The American Doble Company even developed a 100mph steam sports car. Ultimately steam lost the war, but steam vehicles survive and delight us still thanks to enthusiastic owners and restorers.

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the application of liquid biofuels to internal combustion (IC) engines. Biofuels are one of the most promising renewable and sustainable energy sources. Particularly, liquid biofuels obtained from biomass could become a valid alternative to the use of fossil fuels in the light of increasingly stringent environmental constraints. In this book, the discussion is limited to liquid biofuels obtained from triglycerides and lignocellulose among the many different kinds of biomass. Several liquid biofuels from triglycerides, straight vegetable oil, biodiesel produced from inedible vegetable oil, hydrotreated vegetable oil, and pyrolytic oil have been selected for discussion, as well as biofuels from lignocellulose bio-oil, alcohols such as methanol, ethanol and butanol, and biomass-to-liquids diesel. Tunan Shen aims to increase the availability of powertrain systems for autonomous electric vehicles by improving the diagnostic capability for critical faults. Following the fault analysis of powertrain systems in battery electric vehicles, the focus is on the electrical and mechanical faults of the electric machine. A multi-level diagnostic approach is proposed, which consists of multiple diagnostic models, such as a physical model, a data-based anomaly detection model, and a neural network model. To improve the overall diagnostic capability, a decision making function is designed to derive a comprehensive decision from the predictions of various operating points and different models.
Marcel Eberbach provides insight into the investigations of the knocking behavior of methane-based fuels and compares them with the knocking behavior of very high knock resistant liquid fuels during engine combustion. With pressure-based knock detection algorithms and thermodynamic evaluation, the atypical knocking combustion phenomena are evaluated with respect to the abnormalities on the heat release curve. Based on the investigated fuels an engine specific relation between the fuel index numbers (RON and MN) and the actual knock resistance of the fuels by means of the motor methane number was established and applied to the investigated gaseous and liquid fuels during knocking combustion.

Jan Przewlocki provides a deep insight into the post-oxidation processes in an exhaust manifold of an SI engine. Besides the evaluation of 3D-CFD simulation results, tools are developed to evaluate them in a target-oriented way. In addition, a 1D post-oxidation simulation model was developed that is capable of reliably predicting post-oxidation effects within the exhaust manifold.
