Insecure transportation systems are costing our worldwide
mobility-based economy as much as 6% of GDP annually. The
effectiveness of security measures vary widely. In the United
States, depending on the mode of transportation, it ranges from
medium effectiveness for airports to low effectiveness for
maritime, rail, transit, and intermodal activities. Situational
awareness and interoperability are lacking as we try to deal with
both natural and man-made disasters. Regardless of the transport
mode, improvements are essential if governments and corporations
are to address security planning, response, and national
preparedness. Transportation Security examines this problem in a
comprehensive manner and addresses security-based technologies and
solutions to minimize risk.
Applying sophisticated management techniques to freight transport offers the potential for significant cost savings as well as greater efficiency. Yet the inherent complexity of intermodal transport presents many challenges. This practical textbook on the operations of intermodal transport and logistics focuses on the practical concerns and the basics of operations, such as vehicles, containers, handling operations, logistics management and optimisation. This book comprises the proceedings of the conference "Faszination Hybrider Leichtbau 2018", which took place in Wolfsburg. The conference focused on new methods and technologies for the development and production of multifunctional and hybrid lightweight solutions in large-scale vehicle manufacturing. Further, it promoted the exchange of insights and lessons learned between experts from industry and academia. Lightweight design and construction are key technologies for the development of sustainable and resource-efficient mobility concepts. Material hybrid structures, which combine the advantages of different materials (e.g. fiber-reinforced plastics and metals), have a high potential for reducing weight, while simultaneously expanding component functionality. However, the efficient use of functional integrated hybrid structures in vehicle construction, requires innovations and constant developments in vehicle and production technology. There is a great demand for affordable lightweight construction in mass production that takes into account the increasing requirements in terms of variant diversity, safety and quality- particularly with regards to new methods and technologies.
Nowadays, demands on modern civil engineering structures require not only safe technical solutions, but also additional approaches, involving ecological, sociological and economical aspects. This book reacts on these new requirements with a focus on earth structures for transport engineering, mainly for motorways and railways. Technical demands have to be adequately related to the risk with which the design and execution are connected. Soil used for the construction, together with subsoil, are natural materials with a high degree of inhomogeneity. Therefore, the risk when constructing with such materials is much higher than for structures utilizing man-made materials. The engineering approach is firstly focused on the geotechnical risk identification and subsequently on the reduction of this risk. Geotechnical risk is linked to the uncertainties for individual phases of the design and construction processes. Ground model, geotechnical design model, calculation model and structure execution are the main phases of the above-mentioned processes. Risk reduction involves the lowering of the range of uncertainties for individual phases, guaranteeing safe and optimal technical solutions. Eurocode 7 "Geotechnical design" creates a general frame of this risk identification and reduction approach. Earth structures are offering great opportunities for sustainability approach. Therefore, the possibilities how to decrease consumption of land (greenfields), energy and natural aggregates are at the centre of interest. In parallel to sustainability, the principles of availability and affordability for transport infrastructures are discussed. The main aim there is to eliminate the impact of interaction of the transport infrastructure with natural and man-made hazards, thus guaranteeing long-term functionality. This book will be of interest to specialists responsible for transport infrastructure planning, investors (project owners) of motorways and railways and environmental engineers. The main focus is on those responsible for geotechnical investigations, earth structures design and on contractors of such structures.

As visitor numbers increase, so does awareness of the harmful effects that large crowds may have on both natural resources and individuals' recreational experience. Army of the Sky illustrates further how disparate responses to this situation influenced tsarist officer culture. Although the concept of "modernization" remained framed around familiar binaries, aviation recast and infused with new meaning juxtapositions of Russia and the West, imitation and contamination, and the imperatives of progress and the legacies of backwardness. Aviation helped to remold prevailing paradigms of hierarchy, authority, deference, and duty. This volume concludes that the tsarist officer community ultimately offered unique opportunities to cultivate a culture of military aviation and thereby to master the challenge of modernization in a uniquely Russian, an Imperial Russian, manner. Not until the recent attacks on transport systems has transport security become a focus of public concern and academic research. Various aspects of transport security have already been analysed under different agendas. Some research was focused on the potential risk to the environment resulting from transport, in particular from the transport of hazardous or dangerous goods, while other research considered critical elements of transport networks or supply chains as vital lifelines in the case of natural disasters. Recently, new threats stimulated interest in transport security as a stand-alone issue, placing it at the forefront of political and academic agendas. A NATO Advanced Research Workshop held at Imperial College London in January 2009 brought together those with expertise in the above-mentioned fields in order to verify the current state of knowledge in the field and identify promising areas for future work. The workshop concentrated on maritime and intermodal transport, risk management and long-term strategic planning, rather than on the details of monitoring or detection techniques. This collection of papers emanates largely from that workshop. While transport systems are widely recognized as terrorist targets, complete protection of these systems is economically and practically infeasible. The workshop looked at analytical methods to identify critical points in the transport infrastructure and the prioritization of defensive and mitigating measures given the limited resources available. Deficiencies in methods for conducting such an assessment were identified and the need for cost-effective mitigation measures was emphasized.
