In lively fashion Mr. Gattinger records the development of the Ontario Veterinary College, the oldest continuously operating veterinary school in this hemisphere. Viewing its history from the perspective of today, he sees the College and the profession it serves moving in response to the times, from a discipline centred mainly on the study of equine diseases to a highly specialized field of endeavour contributing to the research and technological advances of the modern age. Under its five principals the College has in each era of its history been the training-ground of experts in an important aspect of the agricultural industry, and its adaptation to changing conditions and to the personalities of its successive leaders, in Mr. Gattinger's view, makes it a striking example of the theory put forward by Professor Toynbee of growth through challenge and response. In celebrating its hundredth anniversary the College thus pays tribute to its founders and to the several generations of teachers and research workers who have served it.

Discover the charms and challenges of working at Scotland's most northerly mainland veterinary practice. From performing farm animal caesarean sections at all hours to missing special occasions in order to treat much loved family pets in crisis, no two days in the work of vet Guy Gordon and his team are ever the same. Based in Thurso, northern Scotland, the small group of vets and their supporting staff cover a vast area of more than one thousand square miles. The expansive, wild and rural landscape in which they operate brings a huge variety of work depending on the season, with the delivery of newborn lambs and calves in the spring, and the arrival of seal pups to the northern Scottish coast starting in the autumn months. The Highland Vet shows what working in one of Britain's most beautiful and remote locations really involves. Inside, Guy and his team share the highs and lows, ups and downs and ins and outs of their daily work throughout the course of a year, making this a truly magical celebration of Scotland's northern Highlands, as well as the animals and people who call the region home.

Lectotypes are designated for 11 species.
This book explores America's family farms today. Farmers face many challenges like making daily decisions on when to plow, till, plant, fertilise, and harvest, or management decisions involving their sizeable assets, numerous employees, a multitude of rules and regulations and a market place that changes every day. In addition to these challenges, competition from foreign markets, environmental concerns, low prices and many global factors also make the future uncertain. We are at a critical stage in planning for the future of agriculture; recruiting and training the next generation of farmers and ensuring farms will continue to be viable, healthy operations. Every family owned business has to deal with transitions, but it seems to be reaching crisis proportions in agriculture.
The purpose of this volume is to encourage and facilitate focused research and provide a forum for scholarly exchange about the status of Mayfly and Stonefly science. Professor John Brittain, whose research is focused on freshwater entomology, especially egg development and life cycle strategies of Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, presents a chapter reflecting on the quality of mayflies as good indicators of global warming and the quality of streams and lakes. Professor Emeritus Andrew Sheldon, whose interests have encompassed community and population ecology of aquatic animals over a span of more than 40 years, especially insects and fishes, explores topics of Scale and Hierarchy and the Ecology of "Plecoptera, " discussing how studies emphasizing scale and perspective reveal importance of stoneflies to ecosystems. Other topics cover a broad base of disciplines including morphology, physiology, phylogeny, taxonomy, ecology and conservation. The chapters have been compiled into three sections for this volume: Ecology, Zoogeography and Systematics.
The trouble with lions is that while you are conducting a pregnancy test, you need to be equally, if not more, aware of what you can learn from the lion's other end. That is one lesson that Jerry Haigh brings home in this fascinating collection of stories about working with wild animals in Africa. Conversational in tone, conservational in theme--you will be right beside Jerry, wife Jo, and a colourful cast of vets, guides, and wardens as they scour Africa's sprawling vistas "troubleshooting" lions, rhinos, humans, and other indigenous mammals. Conservationists, veterinarians, and fans of real-life adventure tales will want to keep this memoir handy on the dashboards of their Land Cruisers.

Declining bird populations, especially those that breed in North American grasslands, have stimulated extensive research on factors that affect nest failure and reduced reproductive success. Until now, this research has been hampered by the difficulties inherent in observing nest activities. "Video Surveillance of Nesting Birds" highlights the use of miniature video cameras and recording equipment yielding new important and some unanticipated insights into breeding bird biology, including previously undocumented observations of hatching, incubation, fledging, diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns, predator identification, predator-prey interactions, and cause-specific rates of nest loss. This seminal contribution to bird reproductive biology uses tools capable of generating astonishing results with the potential for fresh insights into bird conservation, management, and theory. |
