If you are among the millions who suffer from chronic pain, this
book will change your life
It is easy to feel lost and overwhelmed by chronic pain. Not only
is there the physical suffering of the constant pain. In trying to
cope with chronic pain, many patients lose significant sums of
money in trying expensive healthcare treatments and medication.
Chronic pain can cause sufferers to lose their jobs. It can cause
depression. It can ruin relationships. It can ruin lives.
A must read for anyone challenged with chronic pain, Winning with
Chronic Pain is written to offer new hope for the millions who
suffer everyday. The authors tell how people are living busy,
normal lives - despite the pain. They offer suggestions for
immediate treatment, provide the reasons why exercise and movement
can end chronic pain, and show how sufferers can ease stress and
begin to manage their pain.
Workplace Survival is a true story of a "reckless" renovation. In
2005, I was diagnosed with "Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease."
I never had asthma, nor allergies and I never smoked, but I went to
work healthy and ended up sick with lung disease. In a 1999 air
quality report, it said that the internal appearance of the
air-handling units appeared to be "in generally poor condition with
many items requiring attention." But three years passed before any
renovation work was done. After fourteen-and one-half years of
employment with this government, I ended my career overnight due to
"recklessness." It all started with the installation of a heating,
ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC) in a 1960s vintage
anemic building. Many dangerous toxins were known to be in the
building-lead, aluminum, chromium, asbestos, mold, dust, fiber,
fungus and God only knows what else. The recklessness caused the
dangerous poisons to come through the overhead vents in my office
and into my airways and lungs that were injured. It was my faith in
God that saw me through this horrific storm. I learned the place
where I thought was my greatest downfall and defeat turned out to
be the place of a new beginning with God.
There is something extraordinarily special about sliding on snow
that has excited generations of snow sports enthusiasts. Add to
this the dimension of travelling through the mountains and the
result is a recipe for some of the best outdoor activity days you
could ever imagine. I have been fortunate to share some of these
adventures with Henry Branigan: Skiing off the summit of Mount
Blanc at dawn or, equally enjoyable, skiing under the northern
lights from hut to hut in Norway, still my all-time favourite way
of travelling through the mountains. A complete guide to alpine ski
touring, ski mountaineering and nordic ski touring sets out to
provide the fundamentals about going off piste and then journeying
through mountain terrain, in a logical, easy to read format.
Adapting ski technique for various off piste conditions is an
essential skill that makes all the difference between surviving and
savouring adventures off piste. The book also covers the
fundamental mountaineering knowledge including navigation, weather
and avalanches that are essential before venturing beyond the
confines of a ski area. Equipment and planning a tour are covered,
whether it is in an Alpine or Nordic environment. All in all this
is a very comprehensive and valuable resource for anyone aspiring
to venture into the mountains on skis. Bob Kinnaird Principal

'This isn’t a grisly book; it is sharp, angry, punchily
philosophical and often funny. It basically invents a new type of
lifestyle aspiration: deathstyle.' The Times 'Callender’s
joyous, thought-provoking book is an account of how his own early
encounters with bereavement led to him becoming a new kind of
undertaker.'Â Daily Mail 'Part memoir, part rant against the
traditional funeral business, part manifesto, part just musing on
death and facing it with compassion and courage. It’s lovely and
thoughtful and may make you rethink a few things.'Â The
Guardian ‘This book is a great work of craft and beauty.’
Salena Godden ‘This compelling personal story of a pioneering
punk undertaker is a moving revelation.’ Love Reading
‘Inspiring and unforgettable.’ John Higgs, author of William
Blake vs the World Death has shown me...the unbreakable core of
love and courage that lies at the heart of what it means to be
human. Ru Callender wanted to become a pioneering undertaker in
order to offer people a more honest experience than the stilted
formality of traditional ‘Victorian’ funerals. Driven by raw
emotion and the unresolved grief of losing his own parents, Ru
brought an outsider, ‘DIY’ ethos to the business of death,
combined with the kinship and inspiration he found in rave culture,
social outlaws and political nonconformists. Ru has carried coffins
across windswept beaches, sat in pubs with caskets on beer-stained
tables, helped children fire flaming arrows into their father’s
funeral pyre, turned modern occult rituals into performance art
and, with the band members of the KLF, is building the People’s
Pyramid of bony bricks in Liverpool – all in the name of
creating truly authentic experiences that celebrate those who are
no longer here and those who remain. Radical, poignant,
unflinchingly real and laugh-aloud funny, What Remains? will
change the way you think about life, death and the human
experience.

A timely book about assessing, coping with, and mitigating burnout
in higher education. Faculty often talk about how busy,
overwhelmed, and stressed they are. These qualities are seen as
badges of honor in a capitalist culture that values productivity
above all else. But for many women in higher education, exhaustion
and stress go far deeper than end-of-the-semester malaise.Â
Burnout, a mental health syndrome caused by chronic workplace
stress, is endemic to higher education in a patriarchal,
productivity-obsessed culture. In this unique book for women in
higher education, Rebecca Pope-Ruark, PhD, draws from her own
burnout experience, as well as collected stories of faculty in
various roles and career stages, interviews with coaches and
educational developers, and extensive secondary research to address
and mitigate burnout. Pope-Ruark lays out four pillars of burnout
resilience for faculty members: purpose, compassion, connection,
and balance. Each chapter contains relatable stories, reflective
opportunities and exercises, and advice from women in higher
education. Blending memoir, key research, and reflection
opportunities, Pope-Ruark helps faculty not only address burnout
personally but also use the tools in this book to eradicate the
systemic conditions that cause it in the first place. As burnout
becomes more visible, we can destigmatize it by acknowledging
that women are not unraveling; instead, women in higher education
are reckoning with the productivity cult embedded in our
institutions, recognizing how it shapes their understanding and
approach to faculty work, and learning how they can remedy it for
themselves, their peers, and women faculty in the future.

Until now, virtually all therapy for alcoholics and other
chemical-dependent individuals has been religious in nature.
Traditional support groups imply that recovery is simply not
possible without reliance on a supernatural "Higher Power."
The need for a secular alternative to recovery from alcoholism or
drug addiction is answered in How To Stay Sober. This book can help
non-religious alcoholics maintain philosophical integrity while
achieving the goal of lifelong sobriety.
James Christopher, a longtime sober alcoholic, offers new insights
and suggestions for developing coping skills and regaining
self-esteem through self-reliance. He notes that current research
indicates that there is no such thing as an "alcoholic personality"
- that addiction is the result of physiology, not psychology. It is
only by making sobriety the number one priority in life,
Christopher states, that an alcoholic or addict can achieve
recovery.
Christopher has spearheaded a large grassroots secular sobriety
movement across the United States, and this book offers concrete
guidelines for forming these groups in any community. The book also
provides an important weekly diary for the recovering alcoholic to
use in the crucial first year of sobriety.
Sobriety must be prioritized daily - no matter what - to remain
under personal control. It is only through this conscious choice,
Christopher states, that an alcoholic can get back on track and
begin anew the creative, fulfilling learning process of life.
Recommending self-reliance and self-respect without substituting
dependence on religious dogma or a "higher power" for countering an
addiction to alcohol or drugs, Christopher focuses on the practical
aspects of his triumph and includes guidelines for forming a
secular support group.
Eldercide will surely become an election issue. Just look at the
voting pool. 77 million baby boomers, that grew up expecting the
best of everything, turned 60 in 2006. If the nursing home industry
does not change they can only expect the worst. 36 million people
have joined AARP because they want bargaining power. 1.7 million
people are already institutionalized in nursing homes and are
facing extinction. Millions more will have to face the possibility
of one day joining the list of system victims.
Every American has a personal, vested interest in changing this
struggling industry. Without a comprehensive overhaul the current
health care system will be bankrupt in 2010 with the cost exceeding
$4 trillion dollars annually or 36% of the GNP. 6% of those costs
are funding the nursing home industry. That means that unless we
make a change we will spend 960 billion dollars, in four years, to
fund a system that kills its patients and bankrupts itself and its
operators. This book details three prevailing principles that makes
this problem solvable:
Embrace the restorative care model
Use computer technology and case management to customize care
plans for each patient
Pay for performance based on outcomes attained.
In just a few seconds - without warning - a stroke can shatter the
life of its adult victim and radically affect the unsuspecting
family. Confused, frightened, and completely unprepared, family
members suddenly find themselves in the role of caregiver. What
exactly happened? What to do? What to expect? Where to turn for
help? How to cope? The questions come fast and furious but answers
are hard to find. "After the Stroke" is the compelling account of
Evelyn Shirk's courageous struggle to face these questions and to
find her own answers as she accepted the challenge of caring for
her husband, a victim of multiple strokes. At 61, Jay Shirk was a
successful scholar with a bright and productive future - until he
experienced a mild stroke, an 'ischemic attack'. During the next
seventeen years, Evelyn, a professional scholar herself, faced the
fear and uncertainty of never knowing when or if there would be
another 'episode'. Her life became a roller-coaster ride of mixed
emotions reaching new highs and lows as she and Jay began the hard,
but rewarding, work of rehabilitation and recovery, only to see
their progress dashed by the debilitating effects of subsequent
strokes, further aggressive treatment, and eventual nursing home
placement. "After the Stroke" chronicles the twists and turns of a
white-knuckle ride that tested Evelyn's endurance, patience, and
ingenuity as she faced tough choices and overcame the challenges of
caring for a spouse whose helplessness increased with each new
attack. Hers is a frank, yet uplifting account, a testament to the
courage and determination of patients and caregivers who struggle
each day to maintain dignity and quality of life.
This book was initially intended to nurse Trish's son back to
health and keep her other children free from the same type of
illness (illness caused by food additives and chemicals). It was
also intended as a handy tool for her clients with food
sensitivities. However, it has been discovered that eating on a
rotation not only eliminates current food issues, but prevents
future food issues as well. Eating on a rotation can reduce
inflammation and promote weight loss. A rotation diet can restore
energy and promote overall health. This book not only defines the
Rotation Diet but also offers tools and recipes for its success.
While the physical and emotional trials of waiting on transplant
lists are featured in popular media, the struggles recipients face
years after surgery are not. Voices of Teenage Transplant Survivors
introduces illness narratives from an unrecognized patient
population: recipients of heart, liver, and kidney transplants.
Offering unique narratives by adolescents who use poetry to explore
issues surrounding the changing body, independence, identity, and
mortality, the book showcases a message of healing and voices of
hope amid uncertainty. Illuminating the physical, psychological,
and existential challenges confronted by adolescents for which
organ rejection and side effects loom in their future, Sample
details the poetry workshops where these adolescents articulated
experiences silenced by family, friends, and the culture of
medicine. She includes close readings and analyses of their
writings, along with writing prompts and references to narrative
medicine theory. This powerful book offers something new for
medical and health professionals, medical humanities researchers,
students, and the public.
