Many aspects of railway modelling are the same whatever scale you choose, but N Gauge has particular benefits: namely, that there is more space for scenery, longer trains and extensive fiddle yards. This leads to specific challenges in the design and layout to ensure a realistic-looking model. Assuming some familiarity with the basics of N Gauge, this book provides guidance and instruction to extend and develop modelling skills to produce a layout that is scenically impressive: planning baseboards, integrating scenery with the backscene, and keeping everything in harmony. With over 250 colour photographs, it includes constructing baseboards and scenery; how to make models of real buildings; using different systems for moving vehicles and controlling them; building, painting and finishing rolling stock from kits and, finally, what is needed to make a successful exhibition layout and how to perform demonstrations.
For too many of us the weekend has become just another overcrowded couple of days dominated by duties, traffic jams, hassle and expense as we dash from supermarket to superstore catching up with the week's chores. But it doesn't have to be this way. Elspeth Thompson's original and inspiring book shows us how we can reclaim the weekend by re-charging our batteries and relationships through enjoying the simple pleasures in life. From watching the sunset and the stars, making marmalade and writing proper letters to borrowing a dog, going to dance classes and using the internet creatively, she reminds us of the fun and satisfaction to be had from creative, social and relaxing pursuits. The Wonderful Weekend Book is packed with ideas that will help restore the balance in our lives, reconnect us to the seasons, and - quite literally - not cost the earth.
Tracing the evolution of fantasy gaming from its origins in tabletop war and collectible card games to contemporary web-based live action and massive multi-player games, this book examines the archetypes and concepts within the fantasy gaming genre alongside the roles and functions of the game players themselves. Other topics include how The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings helped shape fantasy gaming through Tolkien's obsessive attention to detail and virtual world building, the community-based fellowship embraced by players of both play-by-post and persistent browser-based games, despite the fact that these games are fundamentally solo experiences. This title also includes the origins of gamebooks and interactive fiction, and the evolution of online gaming in terms of technological capabilities, media richness, narrative structure, coding authority, and participant roles.
Despite the rise of computer gaming, millions of adults still play face-to-face role-playing games, which rely in part on social interaction to create stories. This work explores tabletop role-playing game (TRPG) as a genre separate from computer role-playing games. The relationship of TRPGs to other games is examined, as well as the influence of Dungeons & Dragons as a tabletop module, a computer game, and a novel. Given particular attention are the narrative and linguistic structures of the gaming session, and the ways that players and gamemasters work together to construct narratives. The text also explores wider cultural influences that surround tabletop gamers.
It's easy to understand why role-playing games have become so immensely popular among contemporary gamers. By their very nature, these games are intensely immersive activities, with players experiencing various risks, rewards and social interactions all within the relatively consequence-free space of the game. This analytical study takes a deeper look at the world of role-playing games, providing a theoretical framework for understanding their more acute psychological and sociological functions. Although mainstream media channels often dismiss involvement in role-playing games as escapist and potentially dangerous, role-playing actually encourages creativity, self-awareness, group cohesion and ""out-of-the-box"" thinking--all valuable cognitive and social skills that remain useful in the real world. The study also offers a detailed participant-observer ethnography on role-playing games, featuring insightful interviews with 19 participants of table-top, live action and virtual role-playing games.
