This book traces the history of the British Transport Police, the National Police Force responsible for policing the railways of England, Scotland and Wales. The roots of the Force go back almost 200 years, starting with the development of the railways during the Nineteenth Century. Hundreds of railway companies were founded and although mergers and amalgamations took place, by the end of the century, well over 100 railway companies were operating, most of which employed railway policemen. The first railway policemen were recruited to work on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in 1826. Other railway companies quickly followed and by the 1850s, railway policemen with their smart uniforms and top hats were a common sight on Britain's railways. During the Twentieth Century, railway companies continued to merge before being nationalised in 1948. The following year, the British Transport Commission (BTC) was created to oversee not only the newly nationalised railway network, but also the nation's docks, shipping, inland waterways, road transport, road haulage and other companies. Also in 1949, the British Transport Commission Police (BTC Police) was created to take over the policing of these newly nationalised institutions. All the former railway, dock and canal police forces were then absorbed into the new BTC Police Force. The BTC was abolished in 1962, having incurred serious financial losses. The BTC Police was renamed the British Transport Police in 1963 and has continued to operate ever since. It no longer polices the docks, harbours and canals for reasons outlined in this book.

This book deals with the development and administration of turnpike trusts in England from the creation of the first turnpike authority in 1663 to the coming of the the railways in 1840. It is concerned specifically with assessing the economic importance of the trusts before and during the Industrial Revolution. The author begins by analysing the importance of the roads in relation to the entire transport network in the seventeenth century and then examines the legislative development of the trust device and spread of the turnpike trusts throughout the country. The financing of the trusts and the way in which they were managed are considered and the relative success of the turnpikes are assessed by looking at the movement in the costs of land transport. The study is based on parliamentary records and on original trust documents, studied on a country-wide basis. By examining this material Dr Albert is able to provide a detailed and comprehensive history of English turnpike trusts which will supersede in many respects the standard accounts of the subject written in the early 1900s.

Im Rahmen des Risikomanagement-Ansatzes entsteht ein mehrkriterielles Entscheidungsproblem, welches in seinen Auswirkungen mittels der Simulationstechnik analysiert wird. Als ein Ergebnis wird ein Vorgehensmodell zum systematischen quantitativen Supply Chain Risikomanagement entwickelt.

Between 1953 and 1980 the Triumph competitions department produced more than 150 'works' competition cars for race and rally. These included TR2, TR3 and TR3A, the TR3S, TRS and Conrero race cars, Herald and Vitesse, TR4, 2000, Spitfire and GT6R, 2.5 PI, Dolomite and Sprint, TR7 and TR7 V8. In addition they prepared Standard Eight, Ten, Pennant, and Phase III Vanguard for competition. Viewed overall, what stands out as the remarkable feature of the work of the department was that they achieved such a degree of success with relatively ordinary production cars, from 803cc saloons upwards. Author Graham Robson was manager of the Standard-Triumph competitions department in the early 1960s and himself supervised the development and management of the works TR4s, Spitfires and 2000s. Here he provides information on each and every one of the works cars of the whole 1953-80 period, with details of their specifications, entries, drivers and careers, accompanied in nearly all cases by archive photographs. In addition there is specially commissioned colour photography of important surviving examples.

The four-cylinder Austin-Healey 100 sports car had already made a big name for itself by the time the 2.6-litre six-cylinder 100/6 arrived in 1956. This came as a 2+2 seater, joined in 1958 by a two-seat version, and both were replaced by the more powerful 3000 model in 1959, again offered as a two-seater or 2+2, and available with disc brakes. The Mk II 3000, launched in 1961, could be had either as the limited-production 132bhp two-seater with triple carburettors and side screens, or as the less spartan 2+2 convertible with wind-up windows, and the final version was the 2+2-only1964 Mk III, now with 150bhp, a wooden dash and better appointments. All these "Big Healeys" are as much admired today as when they were new, and here marque expert Bill Piggott gives full details of correct specification and equipment for all these cars, backed up by in-depth colour photography of outstanding examples of all models and variants.
