Two very different ships collided off Nantucket, Massachusetts, on the night of July 25-26, 1956. Andrea Doria, the Italian liner, was one of the most luxurious vessels built during the immediate postwar period and represented the belief that people would continue to use ships to travel between the continents. When she docked in New York on her maiden voyage in 1953, one ship designer wrote: She is the most beautiful example of modern naval architecture I have ever seen. The Swedish Stockholm was a transitional ship, a cross between a freighter and a passenger vessel, intended to serve the Swedish America Line while the airlines gradually took over the passenger traffic across the North Atlantic.The collision between these two disparate vessels, which resulted in the loss of fifty-one lives and the handsome Andrea Doria, has been a subject of controversy for more than forty-five years. This translation of Algot Mattsson's Swedish book is likely to revive that debate.Gordon Paulsen was a member of the firm of maritime lawyers who represented Stockholm's owners in the legal actions that followed the collision and sinking. When the preliminary hearings opened on September 19, 1956, the question waiting to be answered was how a collision could occur on the open sea between two vessels equipped with all modern technical gear. When the hearings were terminated on January 24, 1957, the question remained unanswered. The shipping companies involved settled out of court, and the result of an actual trial can only be speculation.When he first discovered Algot Mattsson's work in the midnineties, Paulsen felt it deserved to be available for English-speaking readers, and he commissioned atranslation. He has edited the work for an American audience and appended a legal opinion about the contributing navigational faults and the comparative faults between the two ships. Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks documents the skipjack and its role in the oyster dredging industry, describing the natural and manmade disasters that affected the trade, including the August storm of 1933 that swept vessels into pastures; ice-locked harbors that led to the idea of dredging through the ice with sleighs, cars, and trucks; and the Great Depression that crushed the oyster market overnight and forced many to abandon their vessels and way of life. The history of the skipjack, a vessel type that has only existed for about a hundred years, is seen here primarily through the eyes of the men who lived it. Author Vojtech interviewed some thirty captains, former captains, crew members, and relatives of those who worked the boats, to recreate the events that took place between 1917 and 1993. The early years were reconstructed through research into Maryland's dredging records and contemporary newspapers accounts. Today, disease and other environmental hazards affecting the oyster have made the commercial future of the skipjacks on the bay extremely uncertain, underscoring the need to record the lore of those who manned this diminishing fleet and to emphasize the vessel's place in the history of the Chesapeake region. In this readable account, skipjack captains and crews vividly recall their personal troubles and near disasters as well as more widespread hardships that watermen have faced: storms that swept vessels into pastures, long cold spells when they were forced to dredge through the ice with sleighs (and later automobiles), and the Great Depression that crushed the oyster market overnight. Made to Work analyses the conditions of mobile knowledge work (MKW) in contemporary worklives, contrasting and drawing parallels among three highly significant sectors of the Knowledge Economy: academia, information communication technology (ICT) management, and digital creative work. It introduces the concept of 'corollary work' to characterise the elusive work underpinning the configuration of workers, informational, technological, relational and infrastructural resources in (re)producing liveable worklives. It ultimately illuminates the myriad strands of corollary work that enable MKW to take place and contributes to emergent debates on how exploitation, at least in the domain of MKW, can be named, resisted and creatively subverted. In so doing, it opens up a conversation about the complex ways in which contemporary worklives are 'made to work', and about potential interventions to bring about more just worklife conditions in the future.
