Unusually for a large class of locomotives, all Western Class
locomotives had the same prefix which gave them a unique identity.
Redesignated as Class 52 in the early 1970s, they were essentially
designed by and for the Western Region, which saw hydraulic
transmission as the way forward in replacing the 4-6-0 steam
locomotives that Swindon had produced. However, the rest of British
Rail went down the road of electric transmission as the mistakes of
the wholesale lunge into dieselisation came to fruition, and when
BR opted for a standard policy the Western Region was forced to
comply. It was in 1967 that the death warrant for the hydraulics
was signed, though it would take more than a decade to finally end
the hydraulic era. Illustrated with full-color photographs of all
74 of the Western Class locomotives, on a variety of workings that
illustrate their versatility, this nostalgic volume gives a
portrait of a much-loved, but short-lived, class of locomotive. 150
illustrations
Reincarnation teacher Gloria Chadwick opens up the world of

As traditional locomotive haulage declined in the UK and many
enthusiasts' favourite classes were withdrawn or taken off
passenger work, British Rail fans began to broaden their horizons
in the 1980s and look at the railway networks of other countries.
For many, their first ports of call were the nearer continental
European countries, with Germany proving particularly popular as it
still featured locomotive haulage over much of its network, even on
the smaller branch lines. Ireland also proved popular as their
services were almost exclusively loco-hauled. As more enthusiasts
traveled abroad and information and number lists became more
available, foreign rail holidays became ever more popular, with
worldwide favorites including the USA, with its long history of
diesel traction and iconic locomotives, and India, with its
extensive system and thousands of locomotives. As locomotive
haulage declines in the rest of the world, British 'bashers' are
becoming ever more adventurous with most countries, even North
Korea, regularly featuring organised visits for enthusiasts. Today,
British enthusiasts are found participating in their hobby all over
the world and this book, featuring over 160 colour photographs,
summarises some of the more popular destinations and locomotives
that they travel abroad for. 160 colour illustrations
Vorzug verdienen.

Railroad Ferries of the Hudson and the Stories of a Deckhand is a
complete business, economic, technical, and social history of the
ferryboats that were once operated across the Hudson River to
Manhattan from New Jersey and that were owned and operated by
various railroad companies in conjunction with their commuter and
long-distance passenger trains. The work also covers the Staten
Island Ferry (formerly operated by the B&O Railroad) and New
York Waterway's present-day revival of services connecting with New
Jersey Transit commuter-train services.
modifiziertes "Two-Stage Capacitated Facility Location Problem"
uberfuhrt. Anhand von 1.225 Instanzen werden optimale
Netzwerkstrukturen fur etablierte und additive Fertigungsverfahren
bestimmt und mittels sechs logistischer Kennzahlen verglichen.
Das Buch thematisiert das geschaftsprozessorientierte
Risikomanagement, das als spezielle Gestaltungsvariante der
operativen Komponente eines betriebswirtschaftlichen
Risikomanagementsystems betrachtet werden kann. In seiner
integrativen und systemtheoretischen Betrachtung richtet der Autor
die Aufmerksamkeit auf Unsicherheiten in komplexen
Geschaftsprozesssystemen der maritimen Containerlogistik. Der
entwickelte Gestaltungsansatz ist ein branchenspezifischer
Bezugsrahmen fur die Entwicklung unternehmensspezifischer
Risikomanagementsysteme.
Risikosituationen entwickelt. Dieses zielt auf die Bewaltigung von
Risikoauswirkungen in Logistikknoten. Im Vordergrund stehen die den
Warenfluss betreffenden Prozesse.

Containing many previously unpublished photographs, particularly of
Class 50s in operation in the south of England and west of
Basingstoke and Reading, this book looks at this iconic class of
train in colourful detail.
Grand Central is an innovative and pioneering railway open-access
operator with a relatively short, but varied history. Beginning
operations in 2007, Grand Central runs its routes, Sunderland and
Bradford Interchange to London King's Cross, along the East Coast
Main Line. Initially running High Speed Trains (HSTs), Class 180s
joined the fleet in 2009. These continued to be the class in use
after the HSTs were discontinued on the routes. With over 200
images, this book illustrates the wonderful landscapes of Grand
Central's routes, the types of trains operated, including the
iconic HSTs, and some rare behind-the-scenes locations not often
seen by the public. It covers from the days of the early
crew-training trains operated by heritage traction to the present
day, including the foray into Blackpool, and looks at how the
company's innovation and experience is shaping its future and the
part it plays within the current railway landscape.
Britain has been responsible for some of the greatest and most
varied sports cars ever built - the Blower' Bentleys of the 1920s,
diminutive MGs of the 1930s, glamorous Jaguar E-types and Aston
Martin DB5s of the 1960s, and beyond that the jaw-dropping Lotuses
and McLarens of more recent times. This book charts the rich
history of the UK's most magnificent high-performance machines,
from their primitive, pioneering days through today's
technologically advanced modern sports cars. Taking in some of the
most admired and sought after cars ever created, it aims to show
how, over nearly 140 years, these exciting, and sometimes
extraordinary, vehicles developed. The author explores how speeds
have risen, handling has been enhanced, styles have evolved and
sophistication has increased. Illustrated with over 180 pictures,
this fascinating story of the ups and downs of the world's love
affair with Britain's sports cars is almost as dramatic and dynamic
as the machines themselves.
In the late 1990s and early 2000s, most of the current locomotives
in use on the national network were becoming very tired and
evermore unreliable. It was during this time that EWS took over the
large bulk of freight operations in the UK, and they quickly
realised that major changes were needed. In 1996, they ordered a
whole fleet of 250 Class 66 locos, which followed on from the same
basic design as the earlier Class 59, privately owned, locos used
for the Mendip aggregates traffic. The Class 66 was intended for
more general use, rather than being used for just one specific
purpose though. They have now been in service for over 20 years and
have proved very reliable and capable locos. This volume covers the
Class 66/0s from their early days up to the present at various
locations around the UK.

In the late 1990s, English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS)
ordered a large fleet of 250 Class 66 locomotives to replace a
variety of freight locomotive types that had been in service with
British Rail for many years. However, EWS also required something
with a bit more performance, as well as electric train supply, for
hauling charter and mail trains, which were still quite common at
that time. A partnership with Royal Mail resulted in the Class 67s
moving post around the country. When Royal Mail ended that
arrangement in 2004, the Class 67s were pushed into other areas of
work, including light freight and occasional passenger services, as
well as continuing with charters. Although the design of the Class
67s has not been to everyone's taste, they do at least add a bit of
variety to the modern scene. During the 20 years that they have
been in service, they have been very reliable with only occasional
failures. Containing 220 images, this book illustrates all 30 locos
in the class during their first two decades in service.
