Authentic and Inauthentic Places in Tourism - From Heritage Sites to Theme Parks (Paperback): Jane Lovell, Chris Bull Authentic and Inauthentic Places in Tourism - From Heritage Sites to Theme Parks (Paperback)
Jane Lovell, Chris Bull
R1,353 Discovery Miles 13 530 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

With the rise of post-truth and fake news, a thorough examination of authenticity has never been so relevant. This book explores the geography of authenticity, investigating a wide variety of places used by tourists. Not only does it assess what might be described as the more traditional objects for examination - places such as the city, the countryside and the coast - it also includes chapters on art and place, hipster places, gentrification, heritage sites, film locations, photographed places and eventful places. Using a wide-angled lens on places reveals linkages and possibilities, enabling the book to skate across the surface of the geography of authenticity, locating the magically real heritage site, the poignant replica, the authenticated theme park, the unmasked carnival. In focusing on authentic and inauthentic places, this text provides a useful contribution to the understanding of how places are changing, how they are perceived, and how authenticity is embodied and performed within them. Authentic and Inauthentic Places in Tourism is an insightful study and an essential read for those involved in the study of geography, tourism, urban studies, culture and heritage.

Formulae for the Mariner (Paperback, 2): Richard M Plant Formulae for the Mariner (Paperback, 2)
Richard M Plant
R353 R325 Discovery Miles 3 250 Save R28 (8%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book is a compilation of all the formulae that a mariner is commonly called upon to use but the exact workings of which he has perhaps forgotten. For each subject category, the author states the basic parameters in narrative form, often including a figure, graph, chart, diagram, or table, and then provides accompanying equations and their amplifications. Although some formulae that are simpler in format are propounded in other texts, many of those formulae lead to confusion in that 'special rules' must be applied to them in order to obtain a correct answer. However, the rules applied to the formulae in this book work for all problems. In a great circle sailing situation, for example, the fact of whether the vertex is ahead of you or behind you does not matterif you apply the rule(s) given in this book, you will get the correct answer. Another important feature of the book is its devotion of over ten pages of material to the international system of units (S.I.)

Tourism and Gentrification in Contemporary Metropolises - International Perspectives (Paperback): Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra... Tourism and Gentrification in Contemporary Metropolises - International Perspectives (Paperback)
Maria Gravari-Barbas, Sandra Guinand
R1,427 Discovery Miles 14 270 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Tourism gentrification is a critical shaping force of socio-economic and contemporary urban landscapes. This book aims to be the first substantive text on this subject, explaining the multiple and complex relationships between tourism and gentrification and their outcomes and manifestations in contemporary metropolises. This is achieved by drawing on in-depth case analyses addressing the different issues at stake. Part I deals with the manifestations of tourism gentrification and the ways it affects urban landscapes through heritagization and urban regeneration strategies. Part II looks at the correlations between tourism gentrification and culture. Finally, the last two parts aim to identify and examine forms and expressions of tourism gentrification, distinguishing among the actors, beneficiaries, and victims of the phenomenon while looking at its implications for intra-metropolitan territories and metropolitan governance. The book approaches these issues in an innovative way, by looking at a variety of metropolises in a diverse range of countries and by dealing with the different relations and management issues generated by gentrification in relation to tourism. Through interdisciplinary approaches, this groundbreaking text sheds light on the role tourism plays in contemporary metropolises, furthering knowledge of urban tourism. For these reasons, it will be of particular interest to scholars and students of tourism, urban studies, geography, anthropology and sociology.

Women and Sex Tourism Landscapes (Paperback): Erin Sanders-McDonagh Women and Sex Tourism Landscapes (Paperback)
Erin Sanders-McDonagh
R1,346 Discovery Miles 13 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sexual spaces, normally inhabited by (mostly) female sex workers, are understood as masculine spaces, and positioned for and around male consumers. However, red light zones and public sex performances in both Thailand and Holland are being explored and visually consumed by female tourists in significant numbers. Their presence in red light districts and sexual venues is at odds with the ways in which sexual spaces have normally been positioned. Woman and Sex Tourism Landscapes explores female tourists' interactions with highly sexualized spaces and places in two very different contexts: the Netherlands and Thailand. Addressing this incongruence, this text explores the ways in which these spaces are constructed, and examines the different relations that govern the management of, and female tourist interactions with these liminal, sexual zones. Ethnographic data collected in both countries suggests that far from being male-centred spaces, the red light districts and associated sexual entertainment venues are very much open to female tourists. Drawing on this research the author argues that some women are indeed interested in exploring sexualized zones, challenging assumptions about women's involvements with sexual space. Thinking specifically about the visual nature of women's sexualized experiences, the analysis draws on a range of different theoretical understandings that address power, privilege, and the gaze. An important contribution to a range of debates, this book will appeal to students and researchers in tourism, geography, sociology, gender studies and cultural theory.

Ancient Boats in North-West Europe - The Archaeology of Water Transport to AD 1500 (Paperback, Revised): Sean McGrail Ancient Boats in North-West Europe - The Archaeology of Water Transport to AD 1500 (Paperback, Revised)
Sean McGrail
R2,814 Discovery Miles 28 140 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

At last a paperback edition of this standard work on marine archaeology. Sean McGrail's study received exceptional critical acclaim when it was first published in hardback in 1987 and it is now revised and published in paperback for the first time. Professor McGrail provides an authoritative survey of water transport across Northern Europe from the Late Palaeolithic to the later Middle Ages, using evidence of excavations, but also documentary sources, iconographic and ethnographic evidence. In the process he answers such key questions as How were these boats built? What sort of environment were they used in? What speeds could they achieve? and how were they navigated?

Master's Handbook on Ship's Business (Hardcover, 3): Tuuli Messer Master's Handbook on Ship's Business (Hardcover, 3)
Tuuli Messer
R1,365 R1,075 Discovery Miles 10 750 Save R290 (21%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Shipmaster's Handbook on Ship's Business has been an invaluable aid to masters of ships for more than thirty years. Since the publication of the second edition more than a decade ago, many substantive changes have occurred in both the legal and operational environments affecting seagoing vessels and their crews. In response to these changes, this book has been completely updated; it has also been renamed to include masters on all seagoing vessels, including oceangoing tugs. A complete guide for the newly appointed master, it is also useful to experienced masters as a checklist for the voluminous paperwork required in all phases of business aboard: shipping articles, vessel documents and certificates, crew lists, customs and immigration requirements, accounting procedures, bills of lading, charter parties, vessel accidents, and logbooks.

The master of a vessel is required to comply with state and federal laws that apply to the vessel and crew, with the laws of foreign countries when the vessel is in their waters, and with applicable international law. Mastering the details of all these various jurisdictions can be intimidating, but this handbook demystifies the regulations and states the requirements in plain language.

New topics in the third edition include vessel security, communications, GMDSS, and flag etiquette. Useful appendices give details on various agencies and contact personnel, acronyms and definitions, and medical evacuation and travelers' insurance companies.

The Value of Events (Hardcover): Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz The Value of Events (Hardcover)
Erik Lundberg, John Armbrecht, Tommy D Andersson, Donald Getz
R4,206 Discovery Miles 42 060 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Value of Events fills an important niche in the literature on events, being the first book to comprehensively deal with the subject of value creation and measurement, as opposed to impact assessment and programme evaluation. Value creation and measurement is often done routinely from specific perspectives such as tourism, event management, corporate marketing, or customer satisfaction. However, there exist a number of discourses on value and evaluation that have not yet received adequate attention, including the justification of governmental intervention and the costs and benefits of hosting major events. This edited book, written by an international group of academics with expertise in the relevant fields of events, tourism, sport and culture, offers new insight into events and their relationship to sustainability, social responsibility, cultural and social value. Fostering debate in the context of conceptual thinking, philosophising, multiple stakeholder perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches, it challenges the events industry, students, policy-makers and strategists with new perspectives on value, with implications for impact forecasting and assessment. This is a book for all students pursuing degrees in fields where planned events are important topics, while being of great interest to researchers, policy-makers, evaluators and organisers/managers of planned events. Within a subject in need of further attention, The Value of Events offers the most comprehensive overview of event value to date.

Managing Volunteers in Tourism (Hardcover): Kirsten Holmes, Karen Smith Managing Volunteers in Tourism (Hardcover)
Kirsten Holmes, Karen Smith
R5,498 Discovery Miles 54 980 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Recent years have seen an explosion in research on tourism volunteering. Volunteers are an essential part of tourism, whether they are volunteering in their local museum, at a sporting mega-event, as an airport ambassador, or travelling the global as a volunteer tourist. Managing Volunteers in Tourism reviews the latest research to highlight the key management issues and relate them to the tourism volunteering context. It includes previously under-researched forms of tourism volunteering such as meet-and-greeters, surf life-savers, conservation, festival, and information centre volunteers and tourists. The book develops through three distinct sections, the first of which begins by introducing the concept of volunteering and considering the variety of volunteer forms and settings within tourism. The next part picks up the organizational approach and examines volunteer program design and planning, volunteer motivation, recruitment and selection, training and development, reward and retention, and diversity management. The final part consists of ten case studies from leading international researchers and practitioners identifying best practice and key management challenges. Real-life examples and case studies throughout this book provide an in-depth examination of the challenges facing those managing tourism volunteers, making this book indispensable for current and future managers in the tourism industry.

City Spaces - Tourist Places - Urban Tourism Precincts (Hardcover): Bruce Hayllar, Tony Griffin, Deborah Edwards City Spaces - Tourist Places - Urban Tourism Precincts (Hardcover)
Bruce Hayllar, Tony Griffin, Deborah Edwards
R5,085 Discovery Miles 50 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Over the last decade, commentaries and research on urban tourism precincts have predominantly focused on: their role in the tourism attractions mix; their physical and functional forms; their economic significance; their role as a catalyst for urban renewal; their evolution and associated development processes; and, perhaps more broadly, their role, locality and function within the context of urban planning. City Spaces - Tourist Places both consolidates and develops the extant knowledge of urban tourism precincts into a coherent research driven contemporary work. It revisits and examines the foundational literature but, more importantly, engages with aspects of precinct development that have previously been either underdeveloped or received only limited consideration, such as the psychological and socio-cultural dimensions of the precinct experience. Written by an international team of contributors it provides the reader with: * A comprehensive analysis of foundational theory and cutting-edge advances in the knowledge of the precinct phenomenon * An examination of previously underdeveloped topics and themes based on contemporary and ground-breaking research * Typological and theoretical frameworks in which to locate precinct form, function and experience Brilliantly edited to ensure theoretical continuity and coherence City Spaces - Tourist Places is vital reading for anyone involved in the study or planning of urban tourism precincts.

Promoters and Politicians - The North-Shore Railways in the History of Quebec 1854-85 (Paperback): Brian J. Young Promoters and Politicians - The North-Shore Railways in the History of Quebec 1854-85 (Paperback)
Brian J. Young
R603 Discovery Miles 6 030 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The history of the north-shore railways provides a case study in the complexities of industrial development in nineteenth-century Quebec. Constructed in the fifteen years following Confederation, the North Shore and the Montreal Colonization Railways reinforced Quebec's integration into a transcontinental unit. Yet bankruptcy of both companies in 1875 forced the provincial government to assume ownership of the railways and to shoulder a financial burden that kept the province preoccupied, weak, and subservient to Ottawa. Diverse political, clerical, and business interests united to construct the railways and to manoeuvre them from private companies into a public venture and ultimately into the Canadian Pacific system. The two railways brought new concentrations of capital and power that cut across French and English ethnic lines and sharpened regional rivalries. Along the south short of the St. Lawrence both French- and English-speaking inhabitants protested against the province's commitments to its north-shore railways. By the late 1870s Quebec City's English community was lobbying hard against the growing power of their English-speaking counterparts in Montreal. The north-shore railways plagued a generation of Quebec politicians, and their construction bared incompatible regional aspirations. By 1885 years of negotiation, scandal, and political blackmail culminated in the incorporation of the two north-shore railways into the Canadian Pacific system. As this study so clearly demonstrates, Quebec paid a high price in making its contribution to linking Canada by steel a mari usque ad mare.

Social Tourism - Perspectives and Potential (Paperback): Lynn Minnaert, Robert Maitland, Graham Miller Social Tourism - Perspectives and Potential (Paperback)
Lynn Minnaert, Robert Maitland, Graham Miller
R1,679 Discovery Miles 16 790 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Social tourism refers to facilitating access to tourism for low income groups and/or the use of tourism as a regeneration and economic stimulation strategy. Although social tourism has its roots in the early 20th Century and is still a major component of the tourism sector in a range of countries, the concept has received relatively little research attention until recently. In this volume, international specialists on social tourism present perspectives on social tourism from different disciplines and geographical contexts. The book highlights the multitude of interpretations and implementations of social tourism that make the concept so multi-faceted: examples reviewed in this book include holiday vouchers in Hungary, charity initiatives in the UK, tourism schemes for senior citizens in Spain and state provision in Brazil.

Seven themed chapters and two case studies explore the potential of social tourism from a range of perspectives. Should tourism be a right that is available to all? Is social tourism indispensable in a sustainable tourism strategy? What are the different systems of social tourism supply and demand in Europe, and why do the implementations differ so much between countries? The book provides a critical reflection on these and other questions, and is therefore a key resource for social tourism researchers and practitioners.

Panzer Reconnaissance (Hardcover): Thomas Anderson Panzer Reconnaissance (Hardcover)
Thomas Anderson
R834 Discovery Miles 8 340 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Using first-hand accounts and rare and unpublished images, this highly illustrated title tells the full story of the German reconnaissance troops in World War II. When the Wehrmacht was first formed in 1935, tactical reconnaissance was carried out by motorcycle rifle units (Kradschutzen). However, with the development and large-scale introduction of wheeled armoured vehicles in the late 1930s, motorized reconnaissance battalions (Aufklarungs-Abteilungen) were introduced. Equipped with a mixture of armoured cars and motorcycles, they often operated far ahead of battlefront to survey the terrain, observe enemy positions and identify enemy forces - key information required ahead of any armoured assault. In the second half of the war, with Germany on the strategic defensive, armoured reconnaissance troops found themselves increasingly drawn into combat operations, and even holding sectors of the line. At the same time, more modern equipment was introduced with motorcycles phased out and purpose-built armoured personnel carriers (Schutzenpanzerwagen) introduced. Renowned armour expert Thomas Anderson draws on first-hand accounts and rare and previously unseen photographs in this comprehensive and fully illustrated study of the Panzer reconnaissance troops, the crucial eyes and ears of the German armoured forces of World War II.

London's Transport From Roman Times to the Present Day (Hardcover): Anthony Burton London's Transport From Roman Times to the Present Day (Hardcover)
Anthony Burton
R536 Discovery Miles 5 360 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Transport systems are the lifeblood of all great cities and this is certainly true of London. As far back as Roman times, their city Londinium was the hub of a network of roads leading out to all the major centres of the time. It was the Romans who gave the city its first bridge across the Thames and its first paved roadways. This book tells the story of London's roads and bridges and the vehicles that used them. For centuries, transport meant horse drawn vehicles, from lumbering waggons to elegant carriages and the city had a flourishing industry, building carriages. The Industrial Revolution brought major changes, not least in the construction of more and more bridges over the Thames. In the 19th century a new system appeared with the arrival of the railways, and the many stations that are such prominent features of the cityscape. The story continues into the 20th century, when, for a time, the city was also home to some pioneering motor car manufacturers, such as Vauxhall. It comes nearer our time with the construction of the underground railway and the driverless trains of the Dockland Light Railway. Londoners will have a chance to find out just how travel around the city has changed in the last two thousand years.

Every day, roughly 720,000 people from all walks of life use the four lines of the Boston MBTA subway system: Red, Green, Blue, and Orange. The T, as it's known, is a vital link to living, working, or visiting in Boston. The subway system acts as the city's arteries. It includes 28 underground and 80 above-ground stations. Over 145 compelling art photographs explore the T-riders, their behavior, their actions when waiting for or riding a train, and their response to the chaotic push of rush hour. With a keen eye, both the T's infrastructure and its many stations with their varied architecture, artwork, and physical layouts are captured. With the first tunnel excavation begun in 1895 and the last station completed in 1985, there is plenty of variation to explore. Interestingly, this volume also offers a rarely seen glimpse of how the trains are kept operational in several maintenance facilities. Here is a fascinating visual journey through one of the nation's oldest subway systems. Whether you are a regular subway rider, a fan of photography, a train enthusiast, or a people watcher, there is something here for you.
