This textbook is an introduction to the various areas of Italian
linguistics: Along with the methods of modern linguistics and their
description using Italian examples, aspects of the history of
research are also discussed. They concern the Italian reception of
modern linguistic methods as well as work on relevant linguistic
topics in the pre-scientific epoch in Italy.

ich vorhin schon sagtea oe). Dabei geht die Studie

alle diskursdeiktischen Verweise in Korpora unterschiedlicher
Textsorten und leitet aus den Korpusbefunden eine neue Theorie der
Diskursdeixis ab.

Recent models of dialect contact, notably in the work of Trudgill,
Chambers, James Milroy, and Labov have stressed the importance of
the notions of salience, simplification, linguistic complexity, and
the speech community in accounting for the patterns that arise. In
this case-study of the speech of rural migrants in the Norwegian
city of Bergen, Paul Kerswill critically examines the usefulness of
these concepts, and puts recent models of dialect contact to the
test for the first time against a case of such contact as it is
actually happening. Dialect contact often, it is said, leads to
Koineization - the emergence of new, mixed varieties of a language
resulting from the intermingling of speakers of different varieties
of that language. Kerswill investigates the extent to which
processes of change typically ascribed to Koineization are already
prefigured in the speech of the first-generation adult migrants of
this study. While the author's approach is broadly quantitative he
also demonstrates the importance of ethnographic and
social-psychological explanations in accounting for the wide
differences between individuals in the study. He argues for a
sociolinguistic methodology founded on a richer and more
comprehensive view of the social factors influencing, langague use.
American English has many word pairs and trios that are alike
enough to be confusing. Word Choice Errors provides a novel way to
empower writers of all levels to cut through the confusion to
understand which word to use and why that's the word to use.

Interpretazioni is an intermediate- to advanced-level Italian
textbook that aims to teach language through film, focusing on
Italian movies from 2010 to 2017. Teaching language through cinema
is a widespread and proven practice that engages all four main
language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing), and
Interpretazioni utilizes the proven format and pedagogy of Pausini
and Antonello Borra's previous book, Italian Through Film (Yale UP,
2003), which is regarded highly among teachers. Films featured in
Interpretazioni span genres, address a wide range of themes, and
are set in various parts of Italy, encouraging students and
teachers to more fully engage with the complexity of Italian
cinema. As in Italian through Film, the activities based on the
films are divided into three main categories (before, during, and
after viewing the film) with a natural progression from warm-up
questions to closed and controlled exercises to open-ended and
creative tasks-both oral and written-including grammar practice,
all within the context of each single film. An instructor's manual
with answer keys and suggestions on using apps for teaching is
available on the www.press.georgetown.edu website.
This book presents a comparative study of the locative
constituentsused in existential constructions: il y a in French,
hay in Spanish, and c e in Italian. The first part discusses their
role from a morphological, discursive, semantic, and syntactic
point of view. The second part analyzes the syntactic and
discursive behavior of different semantic types of locatives in a
large textual corpus."
This book provides an introduction to the theory and methods of
historical semantics. It gives a survey of the most important types
of semantic innovation (metaphor, metonymy etc.), it describes
typical paths and results of semantic change (polysemy, competition
of lexical units, shifts of prototypical meaning), and it presents
historical case studies on various fields of German vocabulary
(from speech act verbs to forms of address). The book is designed
for readers with no background knowledge of semantics and can be
used for seminar discussion or self-study. It contains extensive
exercises and suggestions for further reading.
