Akkadian, comprising the Babylonian, Assyrian and Old Akkadian
dialects, is the earliest known Semitic language, attested from the
middle of the 3rd millenium B.C. until the time of Christ. It was
widely adopted in the ancient Near East as a written vehicle for
scholarship, literature, legal and diplomatic affairs. It is the
language of the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Code of Hammurapi, the
inscriptions of the kings of Assyria and Babylonia and countless
legal and administrative documents.A Concise Dictionary of Akkadian
has been prepared for the convenience of students and scholars on
the basis of Wolfram von Sodens Akkadisches Handworterbuch updated
with reference to the Chicago Assyrian Dictionary and other
sources. It aims to include all certainly attested words with
variant forms, dialect and period distribution, logographic
writings and English meanings (but not textual citations). A list
of roots assists in tracking down the right entries.
yOn July 1, 1996, representatives from Germany, Austria,
Switzerland, Liechtenstein and a number of countries where German
is a minority language met in Vienna to finalize the new reform of
German spelling. This reform is due to come into force on August 1,
1998. The present publication situates the new system in a
historical dimension and sets out the rationale behind the changes
foreseen. Central criteria here are the linguistic theories and
orthographic principles underlying the modifications planned in
various areas of spelling, and the aims pursued by them. These new
official guidelines are also discussed critically by a number of
opponents of the reform. Here different theoretical approaches to
the problem of correct writing and other views on what the
evolution of German spelling could look like are set against the
new official guidelines. Taken together, these conflicting views
provide a reliable basis for an assessment and a comparison of the
various concepts that have been put forward.

Described by Mary Beard in The Independent as 'the Rolls Royce of
textbooks', Kennedy's classic 1888 guide has remained the
pre-eminent Latin reference grammar in schools and universities for
well over a century. This is a reissue of the first edition, which
appeared the year before the author's death. Benjamin Hall Kennedy
(1804 1889), headmaster of Shrewsbury School for thirty years
before becoming Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge, was
probably assisted by his daughters in producing this completely
revised version of an earlier, unsuccessful publication. From
tables of nouns and verbs to obscure nuances of style, the book
covered all the key points of Latin grammar and was detailed,
well-organised and easy to use. This original Victorian edition
will fascinate present-day students and teachers of Latin and
historians of education.

Koster investigates the subject of death and dying as depicted on
Scandinavian runic stones from the Viking era. Her study calls into
question our conventional understanding of the function of these
inscriptions, showing that runic inscriptions were not limited to
epigraphs, but were also prepared more generally for individuals
who were still alive."
