Originally published in 1923, this book was aimed at school
students and undergraduates and contains a varied collection of
Latin and Greek extracts for unseen translation to complement the
already existing translation books in circulation within the
educational system at the time of publication. This book was
produced in the hope that the 'new collection of passages may, if
not actually filling a gap, at any rate prove an attractive
change'. Keeping strictly within the limits of the Classical
Period, Latin extracts include, Valerius Flaccus, Manilius and
Seneca's Tragedies, whilst Greek extracts include, Homeric Hyms,
Pratinas and Menander. Passages, which are particularly difficult,
have been marked with an asterisk in the table of contents and
overly short and long passages have also been included in order to
meet different circumstances. This book will be of great value to
anyone with an interest in Latin, Greek and the history of
education.
While most courses in Egyptian Arabic teach the essentials of
syntax, morphology, and vocabulary, this second in a series of
three books takes the student a step beyond and focuses on colorful
expressions used by native speakers. The learner will advance from
knowing how to form a good sentence to being able to express his or
her thoughts about the ups and downs of daily life using culturally
appropriate phrases.
Following the first volume which highlighted the many expressions
used to describe people, their characteristics, their behaviors,
and their attitudes, this second volume focuses on proverbs and
their use. Each entry is given fully voweled, and definitions
(including connotation) and explanations are given in Egyptian
Colloquial Arabic. The book also contains a large number of
exercises.
In this brisk and accessible history, sinologist Thomas O. Hollmann
explains the development of the Chinese writing system and its
importance in literature, religion, art, and other aspects of
culture. Spanning the earliest epigraphs and oracle bones to
writing and texting on computers and mobile phones today, Chinese
Script is a wide-ranging and versatile introduction to the
complexity and beauty of written text and calligraphy in the
Chinese world. Hollmann delves into the origins of Chinese script
and its social and political meanings across millennia of history.
He recounts the social history of the writing system; written and
printed texts; and the use of writing materials such as paper,
silk, ink, brush, and printing techniques. The book sheds light on
the changing role of literacy and education; the politics of
orthographic reform; and the relationship of Chinese writing to
non-Han Chinese languages and cultures. Hollmann explains the
inherent complexity of Chinese script, demonstrating why written
Chinese expresses meaning differently than oral language and the
subtleties of the relationship between spoken word and written
text. He explores calligraphy as an art, the early letter press,
and other ways of visually representing Chinese languages. Chinese
Script also provides handy illustrations of the concepts discussed,
showing how ideographs function and ways to decipher them visually.
Originally published in 1933, this German course was created
'primarily to meet the need of a prose manual which may be used in
form from the time a boy begins the translation of connected
passages to the time he leaves school'. The text is divided into
two parts: the first part presents a guide to aspects of the German
language and the second contains a series of passages for
translation. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest
in the teaching of German and the history of education.
Originally published in 1928, this book presents a grammar guide to
German aimed at school pupils following their first year of
studying the language. The text begins with a historical
introduction to the German language before moving on to a
systematic account of its grammatical aspects. This book will be of
value to anyone with an interest in the teaching of German and the
history of education.
Ovid Unseens provides a bank of 80 practice passages of Latin
verse, half elegiac and half hexameter. Taken from across Ovid's
works, including the Metamorphoses, Fasti, Heroides, Amores and
Tristia, the passages help build students' knowledge and confidence
in a notoriously difficult element of Latin language learning.
Every passage begins with an introduction, outlining the basic
story and theme of the passage, followed by a 'lead-in' sentence,
paraphrasing the few lines before the passage begins. The first set
of passages are translation exercises of 12-16 lines, each
accompanied by a Discendum box which highlights a key feature of
poetic Latin, equipping students further with the skills to tackle
ever more difficult verse passages at first sight. These are
followed by longer passages with scansion exercises and questions
on comprehension and stylistic analysis, replicating unseen verse
exam questions in full. The comprehensive introduction provides an
overview of Ovid's life and work, an account of some of the
stylistic features of his poetry, and practical help in the form of
tips on how to approach the more challenging lines of Latin verse
and produce a fluent translation. A step-by-step guide to scansion,
with practice exercises and answers, covers the essential
principles for scanning lines of Latin verse, from the basics of
understanding syllables, feet and types of metres, to coping with
elision and caesurae. A guideline verse vocabulary list is provided
which covers words particularly common in Ovid's works. Broken down
into small 'checklists', each corresponding to a group of four
passages, the vocabulary is learnt cumulatively and as it is
encountered.
First published in 1926, as the second edition of a 1916 original,
this book was created for 'Latin beginners who have spent a
fortnight on purely oral work without seeing any text-book'. It is
divided into four parts: narrative, grammar, sentences and grammar
papers. Illustrative figures are included. This book will be of
value to anyone with an interest in Latin and the history of
education.

The passages were chosen 'so as to afford as wide a range of style

This book makes punctuation more fun and easier to learn than
traditional approaches do. It teaches the natural way, by example:
each lesson begins with quotes that exemplify good punctuation and
sentence structure. Quotations are humorous and informative, drawn
from the words of notable figures-Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Jerry
Seinfeld, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Jennifer Lawrence, and many
others. Short essays accompany each lesson, showing how each
punctuation mark originated and how its use has altered over time.
Correct punctuation is vital for clear, accurate, and natural
writing. Anyone preparing a course assignment, applying for a job
or for college admission, or doing any other formal writing needs
to know the standard conventions of punctuation. Yet many people
have never been taught how to punctuate. A necessary addition to
any writer's bookshelf, this enjoyable book will teach readers to
punctuate effectively and confidently-through over 500 memorable
quotes and clear explanations of the rules.
The chief aim of this primer is to give the student, within one
year of study, the ability to read ecclesiastical Latin. Collins
includes the Latin of Jerome's Bible, of canon law, of the liturgy
and papal bulls, of scholastic philosophers, and of the Ambrosian
hymns, providing a survey of texts from the fourth century through
the Middle Ages. An ""Answer Key"" to this edition is now
available. Please see An Answer Key to A Primer of Ecclesiastical
Latin, prepared by John Dunlap.
