Adult learners of ancient Greek are often attracted to it by the prospect of being able to read in the original a particular author or genre. Greek philosophical writing and Plato in particular is often the target. This book's material has been tried and tested by the author over the years with adult classes, and can be used as a course textbook, or as a handbook for self-teaching. Each of 25 sections is clearly laid out - with tabulation of Greek word-forms and grammar. Each includes ample exercises and practice in reading Greek sentences. Readings in later sections consist of passages of continuous Greek from Plato's Meno, a typical Platonic dramatic dialogue.
The minimalist notion of a phase has often been investigated with a view to the interfaces. 'Phases' provides a strictly syntax-internal perspective. If phases are fundamental, they should provide the grounds for a unifying treatment of different syntactic phenomena. Concentrating on displacement, the book argues that this expectation is borne out: there is an empirical clustering of properties, whereby the phrases that undergo pied-piping are also the phrases that host intermediate traces of cyclic movement. The same phrases also host partial and secondary movement. Finally, the immediate complements within these phrases never strand the embedding heads. The phrases that show this behaviour are the phases (CP, vP, DP, and PP). To account for the cluster of properties, phases are claimed to have two special properties: their complement is inaccessible to operations outside, the Phase Impenetrability Condition; their heads may be endowed with unvalued features that are neither connected to the categorical status of the phase nor interpreted on it. It is shown how the cluster of empirical properties flows naturally from these two assumptions, supporting the idea that phases are indeed a fundamental construct in syntax.

This highly-visual book introduces an effective new method to learn over 1,000 Japanese kanji characters using visual stimuli and pictographs. Learning the fundamental kanji characters used to write Japanese can be challenging, but this book is designed to speed up learning by presenting the 1,000 most common characters using a mnemonic approach. In a fun and accessible way to learn Japanese, each kanji is associated with memorable visual and verbal clues. For example, the Japanese character for person is superimposed over a sketch of a smiling man. The visual clue is "a person standing on two legs." By seeing the distinctive shape of the kanji, learners create a mental image of its meaning. Each character is presented as part of a group of characters which share similar traits. These groups use common root symbols known as radicals; they are also categorized by themes such as colors, numbers, animals, or body parts. Pronunciations, meanings and common vocabulary compounds are provided for each character in the group. Mnemonic clues are also given for the basic 92 hiragana and katakana phonetic symbols. The free audio download available online helps you learn pronunciation for all of the characters and vocabulary in this book. The introduction explains the basic history and structure of the kanji. Key feature of this Japanese kanji book include: Hiragana and katakana phonetic symbols Easy-to-remember drawings and stories for ALL characters Thousands of vocabulary words Online audio for pronunciation practice All audio content is accessible on tuttlepublishing.com/downloadable-content.
Verb-particle constructions are not only present in Germanic languages, but they are also found in Romance ones, particularly in some scarcely regulated varieties, such as old languages, dialects and substandard varieties. In this book a corpus of six hundreds of verbs+locative, taken from a Northern-Italian variety, is given and analyzed. The comparison with apparently analogous Germanic verb-particle constructions shows that the Romance ones are the result of an independent, gradual development, requiring ? in its final phase ? the expression of space (direction) and aspect (result) markers in the verb inflection.

Through the analysis of individual love poems and groups of poems as well as through the representation of thematic and compositional connections of the love theme with other cardinal themes, this work opens up a new perspective on Horace's first collection of odes. Love becomes identifiable as the center of poetry, its poetic functionalization leads to a reassessment of the relationship between Horace and Augustus. Manifold evidence of relationships between individual poems allows new insight into the homogeneous structure of the collection as a whole."
