This workbook accompanies the Panorama francophone 2 student's book and is designed to prepare students for the ab initio French course for the International Baccalaureate Language B programme. It is the first of two workbooks covering the two year course. The workbook contains exercises that give students extra practice in grammar and language use and ties in very closely with the student's book. It is designed for students to write in and can be useful as a homework resource. This workbook is only available for purchase in a pack of five copies.
Although in the age of the Internet we have access to the magnificent Middle English Compendium hosted by the University of Michigan, few students of Middle English would question the usefulness of a desktop copy for day-to-day reference. There has been no handy, reliable edition of such a dictionary for many years. The 1888 edition of Mayhew and Skeat's Concise Dictionary of Middle English can sometimes be found in antiquarian bookshops, but it is scarce, and available copies vary in both condition and cost. This new edition of Mayhew and Skeat has been revised and completely reset for the modern reader. It offers in a concise form more than 11,000 headwords with source references, cross references, and etymologies.
Approximately five million people worldwide speak Albanian. The
opening of Albania in the 1990s to broader trading and diplomatic
relations with other nations has created a need for better
knowledge of the language and culture of this country. This book
teaches the student to communicate in everyday situations in the
language, with each chapter introducing a new situational context.
Students learn to discuss work, vacations, health, and
entertainment. Students also learn to practice basic skills such as
shopping, ordering tickets, and renting an apartment. Upon
completing this textbook, students will be at the A2/B1 level of
proficiency on the scale provided by the Common European Framework
of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
Die mundliche Textuberlieferung des slawischen Heidentums war schon fast verschollen geglaubt. Erst in neuerer Zeit ist es gelungen, in der slawischen Folklore-Dichtung Fragmente sakraler Texte, die auf diese Zeit zuruckgehen, zu erkennen. Dadurch ist es moeglich geworden, weitere inhaltliche Zusammenhange aufzuzeigen und die Grundzuge des mythischen Weltbildes wiederaufleben zu lassen. Das Bild wird scharfer und lebendiger, wenn auch die mit der slawischen eng verwandte baltische Tradition herangezogen wird. In dieser Studie geschieht das im Hinblick auf die Gestalt der grossen Goettin, der Mutter, die Wohltat gewahrt und verwehrt, der Herrin uber die Verstorbenen. So zeichnen sich grundlegende Jenseitsvorstellungen deutlich ab.
Migration verandert unsere Gesellschaft nachhaltig. Sprache spielt dabei die zentrale Rolle. Sprachlich-kommunikative Prozesse bestimmen Bildungs- und Karrierechancen der Migranten, die kulturelle Teilhabe an Herkunfts- und Aufnahmekultur und die Herstellung von interpersoneller Solidaritat, Ab- und Ausgrenzung. DerJahrgangsband 2012widmet sich dem Deutsch der Migranten in seinen linguistischen, soziologischen und padagogischen Dimensionen. Im Brennpunkt steht, wie Migranten das Deutsche erwerben, verandern und in Relation zu den Herkunftssprachen benutzen: Wie gestaltet sich der Erwerb von Deutsch als Zweitsprache unter dem Einfluss unterschiedlicher Erstsprachen? Welche ein- und mehrsprachigen Weisen des Sprechens und Schreibens benutzen Migranten? Welche strukturellen Besonderheiten weist ihr Deutsch auf? Welche Rolle spielen Sprache und Kommunikation fur die Ausbildung, Bewahrung und Transformation von Identitatsentwurfen und biographischen Selbstverstandnissen? Wie gestalten sich Prozesse der sprachlichen Kommunikation von Migranten und Einheimischen? Wie hangen Sprache, Bildungs- und Berufssituation der Migranten zusammen?
Die Beitrage bieten neue Erkenntnisse uber das bisher weitgehend unerforschte Wortbildungssystem des Mittelhochdeutschen. Nach den Methoden der historisch-synchronen Wortbildungsanalyse wird die nominale Derivation (Substantivsuffigierung, Adjektivsuffigierung/-prafigierung) auf der Grundlage des "Corpus der altdeutschen Originalurkunden" untersucht. Die systematisch erfassten Ableitungen werden morphologisch und semantisch-funktional unter Berucksichtigung ihrer sprachgeographischen Verteilung analysiert. Daraus resultiert die exemplarische Darstellung des Wortbildungssystems der deutschen Urkundensprache des 13. Jahrhunderts. Die Ergebnisse werden in einem morphologisch-semasiologischen und einem onomasiologischen Teil prasentiert. Die synchrone Analyse wird durch eine diachrone Einordnung des Befunds erganzt, die sich aus dem Vergleich mit den Systemen der spateren Sprachstufen (Fruhneuhochdeutsch, geschriebene/gesprochene Gegenwartssprache) ergibt. So wird ein UEberblick uber Wandel und Konstanz im deutschen Wortbildungssystem erreicht. Die detaillierte Darstellung der Lexeme und die Ergebnisse zu Korrespondenz und Konvergenz wortgebildeter Woerter im Korpus stellt zudem einen Beitrag zur mhd. Lexikologie dar.
Aimed at young learners and false beginners who may have done an O Level or GCSE in the past and are returning to French after a gap of a few years, this title offers a two-track approach: flexible tutor-led activities for use in class, together with user-friendly activities for private study. Combining lively content with clear grammatical explanation the course provides enough material for 24 weeks of study and assumes a weekly pace of 2 hours in class and 2 hours at home. The study is principally based on empirical data; it examines language development processes in the four regionally contiguous cities of Emmerich, Geldern, Nijmegen and Wesel in the early modern age. Using the linguistic study of variables and historical sociolinguistics, the author traces the processes initiating the formation of the linguistic boundary between German and Nederlans in the area of Rhine and Meuse. In this, the viability is tested both of the "classic" theories of German language standardisation (territorial influence, influence of printing and of Luther's language) and of more recent explanatory approaches (significance of the cities and the multilingualism of the upper classes). The study has an important contribution to make to the historical linguistic description of the early stage in the genesis of the modern national languages of German and Dutch.

What does the grammatical category tense have to do with orality, and how can this relationship be investigated in historical context? This study explores this question based on a detailed empirical investigation of the Middle High German tense system. Here the textual and functional distribution of the tenses are traced back to a binary structured system depending on two different discourse modes, thus showing an indirect relationship between tense and a oehistorical oralitya .

The study focuses on the correlations existing between the conceptual properties of the modalities of visual and auditory perception and the semantic-syntactic behavior of the verbs of perception ver/voir, oA-r/entendre, mirar/regarder, and escuchar/A(c)couter. In part one of the book, the author argues that visual perception and auditory perception differ in terms of extra-linguistic criteria. Part two draws upon empirical material to advance syntactic evidence for a connection between the cognitive features of visual and auditory perception and the syntactic behavior of verbs expressing such perception.
This volume covers more than 200 years of recording specific language in German explanatory dictionaries. For the first time, the comparative analysis of six dictionaries from the 18th to the 20th century provides reliable data which subject areas were covered lexicographically and which special methods of marking were used.
