This guide clearly and succinctly presents the basic tenets of teaching foreign languages specifically for Arabic teachers. Consolidating findings from second language acquisition (SLA) research and applied linguistics, it covers designing curricula, theory and methods, goals, testing, and research, and intersperses practical information with background literature in order to help teachers improve their teaching of Arabic as a foreign language (TAFL). Karin C. Ryding, a well-regarded scholar of Arabic linguistics and former president of the American Association of Teachers of Arabic, frames the discussion with SLA literature and suggests practical and effective ways of helping students learn. Ryding discusses issues at the core of Arabic teaching effectiveness and the achievement of communicative competence, such as the teaching of pronunciation, speaking, reading, listening, and writing; teaching mixed-level classes; creative classroom organization; corrective feedback; and use of activities and exercises, with plenty of examples from Arabic and tips for teachers. She also covers materials development and proficiency testing, providing study questions and recommended readings for each chapter. This guide, which can be used as a textbook, is the first of its kind aimed specifically at TAFL, and should be of interest to Arabic instructors-in-training, academics, graduate students, linguists, department chairs, language coordinators, and teacher trainers. It also serves as a resource for teachers of other less commonly taught languages (LCTLs), who struggle with similar issues.

Chahkapas: A Naskapi Legend shares the story of Chahkapas, a heroic figure in First Nations storytelling, who performs feats of strength and skill in spite of his diminutive size. The book shares this traditional legend as originally recorded in the Naskapi community in northern Quebec in 1967 when it was narrated by John Peastitute, a Naskapi Elder and accomplished storyteller. Transcribed in the Naskapi language and syllabic orthography, the book offers a literary resource for the Naskapi language community, and the English translation enables those unfamiliar with the language, or the story, to discover this important legend. The book also contains extensive analysis of stories about Chahkapas, notes about the provenance of the recordings, a biography of the storyteller, and a history of the Naskapi people. Lavish illustrations from Elizabeth Jancewicz-an artist raised in the Naskapi community-provide a sensitive and accurate graphical account of the legend, which has also been approved by Naskapi speakers themselves.

This book examines Chinese tertiary students' experiences of learning English in Sino-Australian programs in China. Using an institutional ethnography, the book examines one well-established Sino-Australian program based at a Chinese university. The book explores the ways that participant students used the Chinese words, tropes and their meanings to describe their English learning experiences with both local Chinese and foreign English teachers. This book introduces an innovative theoretical framework, "representation theory with a multilingual perspective", to analyse how Chinese students' everyday experiences are constructed and mediated through language, discourse and identity. This framework also highlights graphic examples of how concepts are created in both Chinese and English, and thus serves as a powerful tool for deconstructing dichotomies between China and the West. The aim of this book is, then, two-fold: to show how a novel theoretical lens can help us to develop more nuanced understandings of Chinese students, and to propose a new methodological and theoretical framework through which one can challenge the monolingual subjectivity and parochial views of both Chinese and Western conceptions.
In this collection of aphorisms and short essays, E.M. Cioran sets about the task of peeling off the layers of false realities with which society masks the truth. For him, real hope lies in this task, and thus, while he perceives the world darkly, he refuses to give in to despair. He hits upon this ultimate truth by developing his notion of human history and events as "a procession of delusions," striking out at the so-called "Fallacies of Hope." By examining the relationship between truth and action and between absolutes, unknowables, and frauds, Cioran comes out, for once, in favor of "being."
Achieve better marks in Afrikaans (Grade 7-12) Afrikaans+ is a learner-friendly guidebook which caters for additional language learners who want to achieve better marks in Afrikaans. This practical guide contains explanations in English and is filled to the brim with examples. It explains tests and exams used for both the DBE and IEB and was written by a panel of educational experts who understand the needs of additional language learners. This book is completely up to date. The Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls (AWS) has just been re-issued, blindsiding many a teacher with the changes in Afrikaans grammar rules. While the AWS is seen as the touchstone for Afrikaans language practitioners, it could be a daunting book to use in the classroom. Afrikaans+ was written with the most recent changes to the AWS in mind, and presents these grammar rules in a clear, practical manner. Every chapter in the book also offers free online support - exercises, answers and examples - which will be kept up to date by the panel. The book contains six sections: 1. Comprehension - Begrip: This explains how you should approach a comprehension test, how to look for the answers, and provides tips on how to understand the questions. It also explains how to make summaries. Visual texts, such as cartoons, graphs and maps, are also explained. 2. Grammar - Taal: This is a step-by-step guide to understanding the “how” and the “why” of Afrikaans grammar. You will be guided with English explanations and Afrikaans examples on things like word order, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, time, numbers, plural and diminutive forms, the negative, active and passive voice, pronouns, participles and abbreviations. There are sections offering basic knowledge to help the struggling learner through the exam. But there are also more advanced sections for the learner who wants to get an A and for the teacher who wants to become familiar with all the changes in the AWS. 3. Literature - Letterkunde: Everything you need to know about prose, drama, short stories and poetry. What is the difference between a metaphor and a simile? Who is the protagonist and who the antagonist? We use simple explanations and good examples of all these and other literature terms. 4. Oral - Mondeling: The book contains practical pointers on how to prepare for different kinds of oral, such as interviews, prepared speeches, introducing and thanking a speaker, roleplay, how to make a vlog and how to discuss the booklist you have to read for grade 12. Examples of all these are given, and more are provided online. 5. Vocabulary - Woordeskat: You will always need vocabulary for essays and orals. With the most recent vocabulary on food, technology, life after school, sport and lots more, you will be well prepared. 6. Written work - Skryfwerk: This section starts with a step-by-step approach to writing: how to choose a topic, how to do your planning, what not to use in an essay and how to end your story. The examples of all the different types of written work (essays, long and short transactional writing) and tips on each, will help you to master each one. Online you will be able to read through more examples.
