Pitched at Intermediate to Advanced and B1-C1 level, this reader is not simply a language textbook; it offers students a chance to learn and think in depth about Japan as they build confidence in reading real-world Japanese texts.
New Testament lexicons of today are comprehensive, up-to-date, and authoritative. Behind them lies a tradition dating back to the sixteenth century, whose characteristics are not well known. Besides giving a history of this tradition, A History of New Testament Lexicography demonstrates its less satisfactory features, notably its dependence on predecessors, the influence, of translations, and its methodological shortcomings. John A. L. Lee not only criticizes the existing tradition, but stimulates thought on new goals that New Testament lexicography needs to set for itself in the twenty-first century. This book caters to the non-specialist as well as those interested in philological detail.

Corpus Perspectives on the Spoken Models used by EFL Teachers illustrates the key principles and practical guidelines for the design and exploitation of corpora for classroom-based research. Focusing on the nature of the spoken English used by L2 teachers, which serves as an implicit target model for learners alongside the curriculum model, this book brings an innovative perspective to the on-going academic debate concerning the models of spoken English that are taught today. Based on research carried out in the EFL classroom in Ireland, this book: explores issues and challenges that arise from the use of "non-standard" varieties of spoken English by teachers, alongside the use of Standard British English, and examines the controversies surrounding sociolinguistic approaches to the study of variation in spoken English; combines quantitative corpus linguistic investigations with qualitative functional discourse analytic approaches from pragmatics and SLA for classroom-based research; demonstrates the ways in which changing trends and perspectives surrounding spoken English may be filtering down to the classroom level. Drawing on a corpus of 60,000 words and highlighting strategies and techniques that can be applied by researchers and teachers to their own research context, this book is key reading for all pre- and in-service teachers of EFL as well as researchers in this field.
Offering new and unique approaches bridging the gap between cultural analysis and governmentality studies in the United States, this book opens up new lines of inquiry into cultural practices and offers fresh perspectives on Foucault's writings and their implications for cultural studies. It provides critical frameworks to analyze cultural practices and strategies of governing as ways of understanding the present. It also broadens the theater of intellectual debates over "culture and governing" studies from their current locales in Australia and Great Britain to the United States.
"Traditions and Transitions: Curricula for German Studies" is a collection of essays by Canadian and international scholars on the topic of why and how the curriculum for post-secondary German studies should evolve. Its twenty chapters, written by international experts in the field of German as a foreign or second language, explore new perspectives on and orientations in the curriculum. In light of shifts in the linguistic and intercultural needs of today's global citizens, these scholars in German studies question the foundations and motivations of common curriculum goals, traditional program content, standard syllabus design, and long-standing classroom practice. Several chapters draw on a range of contemporary theories--from critical applied linguistics, second-language acquisition, curriculum theory, and cultural studies--to propose and encourage new curriculum thinking and reflective practice related to the translingual and cross-cultural subjectivities of speakers, learners, and teachers of German. Other chapters describe and analyze specific examples of emerging trends in curriculum practice for learners as users of German. This volume will be invaluable to university and college faculty working in the discipline of German studies as well as in other modern languages and second-language education in general. Its combination of theoretical and descriptive explorations will help readers develop a critical awareness and understanding of curriculum for teaching German and to implement new approaches in the interests of their students.
Offering a practical theory for why people make decisions about revealing and concealing private information. Boundaries of Privacy taps into everyday problems in our personal relationships, our health concerns, and our work to investigate the way we manage our private lives. Petronio argues that in addition to owning our own private information, we also take on the responsibility of guarding other people's private information when it is put into our trust. This can often lead to betrayal, errors in judgment, deception, gossip, and privacy dilemmas. Petronio's book serves as a guide to understanding why certain decisions about privacy succeed while others fail.

"Chaoyue: Advancing in Chinese" covers the five Cs--communication, cultures, comparisons, connections, and communities--and follows three communicative modes in lesson design: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. The authors arrange their lessons around four topics intrinsically interesting to students: the self, schooling, social customs, and the global village, fostering a full appreciation of Chinese culture. Each lesson contains warm-up activities, mini-dialogues, authentic readings, conversational relays, a cultural unit, examples of sentence patterns, and a vocabulary list. Two review lessons are geared specifically toward synthesizing and reinforcing the language and culture skills taught throughout the book, and footnote glossaries assist in reading comprehension. Written by experienced Chinese language instructors, "Chaoyue" helps students reach the preadvanced proficiency level within two semesters, or approximately 150 to 180 hours of course time. The preadvanced stage is comparable to a fourth-semester college Chinese course, or 250 hours of instruction. Unlike other language texts, "Chaoyue" is printed in both simplified and traditional Chinese characters, as well as the phonetic systems used in China ( "pinyin") and Taiwan ( "zhuyin fuhao"). It also includes a CD-ROM with additional assignments and review as well as an online teacher manual. Lesson sections include: -Warm-up activities that articulate the lesson's theme and activate students' prior knowledge -Short readings in the form of letters, e-mails, reports, dialogues, stories, and interviews -Dialogue practice with key vocabulary and sentence patterns -Interactive activities such as surveys, debates, and small group discussions -Conversational relays that ask pairs to complete minidialogues -Authentic readings in the form of advertisements, Web sites, maps, and signs, with multiple-choice review questions -Common expressions that relate to the lesson theme
