Madame Germaine de Stael is often regarded as the "mistress to an age," or (like England and Russia) one of the three great European "powers" of the nineteenth century. She was in some sense both, but she was also an important and influential writer whose works, astonishingly, have not, until this volume, been translated into English since the early nineteenth century. She absorbed the leading ideas of the Enlightenment on literature, politics, science, and the social order; turned many of them to her own uses and then bequeathed them to the nineteenth century, which adopted much of the Enlightenment through her works.

She had two related aims: by her writings on politics, to guide Europe as it entered the republican era and to help it maintain its cultural legacy and liberty; and to explain all literature by its relation to social institutions (which has had a profound effect on all subsequent studies of comparative literature).

Here, in clear and flowing English prose that conveys both the personality and the style of the original-and that corrects the errors of earlier translations-are selections from Madame Germaine de Stael's major works, including Considerations on the Principal Events of the French Revolution, Literature Considered in Its Relation to Social Institutions, Essay on Fiction, On Germany, and her reflections on Russian and English as well as German national character. They make plain both her amazingly modern approach to such subjects as politics, literature, science, education, and women, and the tremendous repercussions her work has had.

This collection features major critical articles dealing with the authors and texts customarily taught in colleges and universities in the United States. The articles are in English and Spanish with a predominance of the former. The material is organized to reflect the common chronological and period divisions of the academic curriculum, and is clustered around major literary figures, with a mix of general articles on the writers and texts that are commonly included in anthologies.

This important new book explores the psychological motives that shape the extent and nature of people's cooperative behaviour in groups, organizations and societies to which they belong. Individuals may choose to expend a great deal of effort on promoting the goals and functioning of the group, they may take a passive role, or they may engage in behaviours targeted towards harming the group and its goals. Such decisions have important implications for the group's functioning and viability, and the goal of this book is to understand the factors that influence these choices.
In so doing, the authors bring together two literatures: the study of rule-following behaviour and the study of helping behaviour, and show how both types of cooperative behaviour are rooted in people's views about the justice of group procedures. The authors argue that people focus on procedural fairness because they use information about the fairness within the group. These status judgments are important to people because they shape their self definitions and feelings of self worth. By understanding the motivations which underlie willingness to cooperate we can better explain why it is that people value group membeship, and what groups mean to individuals.
Cooperation in Groups is essential reading for students and researchers of group behaviour in both social and organizational psychology. Given its discussion of the powerful factors that can build higher levels of organizational commitment, and decrease rule breaking and other negative actions, it will also be important reading for all kinds of group leaders including managers, officials and policy-makers.

Pathologizing Black Bodies reconsiders the black body as a site of cultural and corporeal interchange; one involving violence and oppression, leaving memory and trauma sedimented in cultural conventions, political arrangements, social institutions and, most significantly, materially and symbolically engraved upon the body, with "the self" often deprived of agency and sovereignty. Consisting of three sections, this text focuses on works of the 20th and 21st century fiction and cultural narratives by mainly African American authors, aiming to highlight the different ways in which race has been pathologized in America and examine how the legacies of plantation ideology have been metaphorically inscribed on black bodies. The variety of analytical approaches and thematic foci with respect to theories and discourses surrounding race and the body allow us to delve into this thorny territory in the hope of gaining perspectives about how African-American lives are still shaped and haunted by the legacies of plantation slavery.
