Politics, Literature and National Character (Paperback): Madame De Stael, Morroe Berger Politics, Literature and National Character (Paperback)
Madame De Stael, Morroe Berger
R1,403 Discovery Miles 14 030 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Madame Germaine de Stael is often regarded as the "mistress to an age," or (like England and Russia) one of the three great European "powers" of the nineteenth century. She was in some sense both, but she was also an important and influential writer whose works, astonishingly, have not, until this volume, been translated into English since the early nineteenth century. She absorbed the leading ideas of the Enlightenment on literature, politics, science, and the social order; turned many of them to her own uses and then bequeathed them to the nineteenth century, which adopted much of the Enlightenment through her works.

She had two related aims: by her writings on politics, to guide Europe as it entered the republican era and to help it maintain its cultural legacy and liberty; and to explain all literature by its relation to social institutions (which has had a profound effect on all subsequent studies of comparative literature).

Here, in clear and flowing English prose that conveys both the personality and the style of the original-and that corrects the errors of earlier translations-are selections from Madame Germaine de Stael's major works, including Considerations on the Principal Events of the French Revolution, Literature Considered in Its Relation to Social Institutions, Essay on Fiction, On Germany, and her reflections on Russian and English as well as German national character. They make plain both her amazingly modern approach to such subjects as politics, literature, science, education, and women, and the tremendous repercussions her work has had.

Cooperation in Groups - Procedural Justice, Social Identity, and Behavioral Engagement (Hardcover): Tom Tyler, Steven Blader Cooperation in Groups - Procedural Justice, Social Identity, and Behavioral Engagement (Hardcover)
Tom Tyler, Steven Blader
R3,998 Discovery Miles 39 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This important new book explores the psychological motives that shape the extent and nature of people's cooperative behaviour in groups, organizations and societies to which they belong. Individuals may choose to expend a great deal of effort on promoting the goals and functioning of the group, they may take a passive role, or they may engage in behaviours targeted towards harming the group and its goals. Such decisions have important implications for the group's functioning and viability, and the goal of this book is to understand the factors that influence these choices.
In so doing, the authors bring together two literatures: the study of rule-following behaviour and the study of helping behaviour, and show how both types of cooperative behaviour are rooted in people's views about the justice of group procedures. The authors argue that people focus on procedural fairness because they use information about the fairness within the group. These status judgments are important to people because they shape their self definitions and feelings of self worth. By understanding the motivations which underlie willingness to cooperate we can better explain why it is that people value group membeship, and what groups mean to individuals.
Cooperation in Groups is essential reading for students and researchers of group behaviour in both social and organizational psychology. Given its discussion of the powerful factors that can build higher levels of organizational commitment, and decrease rule breaking and other negative actions, it will also be important reading for all kinds of group leaders including managers, officials and policy-makers.

The Routledge Companion to Politics and Literature in English (Hardcover): Matthew Stratton The Routledge Companion to Politics and Literature in English (Hardcover)
Matthew Stratton
R5,956 Discovery Miles 59 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The Routledge Companion to Politics and Literature in English provides an interdisciplinary overview of the vibrant connections between literature, politics, and the political. Featuring contributions from 41 scholars across a variety of disciplines, the collection is divided into five parts: Connecting Literature and Politics; Constituting the Polis; Periods and Histories; Media, Genre, and Techne; and Spaces. Organised around familiar concepts - such as humans, animals, workers, empires, nations and states - rather than theoretical schools, it will help readers to understand the ways in which literature affects our understanding of who is capable of political action, who has been included in and excluded from politics, and how different spaces are imagined to be political. It also offers a series of engagements with key moments in literary and political history from 1066 to the present in order to assess and reassess the utility of conventional modes of periodization. The book extends current discussions in the area, looking at cutting-edge developments in the discipline of literary studies as a whole which will appeal to academics and researchers seeking to orient their own interventions into broader contexts.

Beginning Theory - An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory: Fourth Edition (Paperback, 4th edition): Peter Barry Beginning Theory - An Introduction to Literary and Cultural Theory: Fourth Edition (Paperback, 4th edition)
Peter Barry
R419 Discovery Miles 4 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Beginning theory has been helping students navigate through the thickets of literary and cultural theory for over two decades. This new and expanded fourth edition continues to offer readers the best single-volume introduction to the field. The bewildering variety of approaches, theorists and technical language is lucidly and expertly unravelled. Unlike many books which assume certain positions about the critics and the theories they represent, Beginning theory allows readers to develop their own ideas once first principles and concepts have been grasped. The book has been updated for this edition and includes a new introduction, expanded chapters, and an overview of the subject ('Theory after "Theory"') which maps the arrival of new 'isms' since the second edition appeared in 2002 and the third edition in 2009. -- .

Spirit of Place - Artists, Writers and the British Landscape (Paperback): Susan Owens Spirit of Place - Artists, Writers and the British Landscape (Paperback)
Susan Owens
R342 Discovery Miles 3 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

When we look at the landscape, what do we see? Do we experience the view over a valley or dappled sunlight on a path in the same way as those who were there before us? We have altered the countryside in innumerable ways over the last thousand years, and never more so than in the last hundred. How are these changes reflected in - and affected by - art and literature? Spirit of Place offers a panoramic view of the British landscape as seen through the eyes of writers and artists from Bede and the Gawain-poet to Gainsborough, Austen, W. G. Sebald and Barbara Hepworth. Shaped by these distinctive voices and evocative imagery, Susan Owens describes how the British landscape has been framed, reimagined and reshaped by each generation. Each account or work of art, whether illuminated in a manuscript, jotted down in a journal or constructed from sticks and stones, holds up a mirror to its maker and their world. With 80 illustrations

Reading Contemporary Picturebooks - Picturing Text (Hardcover): David Lewis Reading Contemporary Picturebooks - Picturing Text (Hardcover)
David Lewis
R5,481 Discovery Miles 54 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reading Contemporary Picturebooks takes a look at one of the most vibrant branches of children's literature - the modern picturebook. This exciting new book takes a sample of contemporary picturebooks and closely examines the features that make them distinctive and then suggests a way of characterising the 'interanimation' of words and pictures that is the essence of the form. The reasons for the picturebook's vitality and flexibility are also explored and the close bond between the picturebook and its readers is analysed. Advances in our understanding of how visual images are organised are examined and the book concludes with an attempt to redescribe the picturebook in such a way that pictures, readers and text may be drawn together. Picturing Text will be of interest to students, teachers and researchers interested in reading, children's literature and media studies.

The Horror Reader (Paperback): Ken Gelder The Horror Reader (Paperback)
Ken Gelder
R1,227 Discovery Miles 12 270 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Horror has been one of the most spectacular and controversial genres in both cinema and fiction - its wild excesses relished by some, vilified by many others. Often defiantly marginal, it nevertheless inhabits the very fabric of everyday life, providing us with ways of imagining and classifying our world; what is evil and what is good; what is monstrous and what is 'normal'; what can be seen and what should remain hidden.
The Horror Reader brings together 29 key articles to examine the enduring resonance of horror across culture. Spanning the history of horror in literature and film and discussing texts from Britain, the United States, Europe, the Caribbean and Hong Kong, it explores a diversity of horror forms from classic gothic literature like Frankenstein and Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, to contemporary serial killers, horror film fanzines and low-budget movies such as The Leech Woman and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Themes addressed include:
* the fantastic * horror and psychoanalysis * monstrosities * different Frankensteins * vampires * queer horror * American gothic * splatter and splash films * race and ethnicity * lowbrow and low-budget horror * new regional horror.
The Reader opens with an introduction to 'the field of horror' by Ken Gelder, and each thematic section includes an introductory preface. There is also a comprehensive bibliography of horror literature.

Pathologizing Black Bodies - The Legacy of Plantation Slavery (Hardcover): Constante Gonzalez Groba, Ewa Barbara Luczak,... Pathologizing Black Bodies - The Legacy of Plantation Slavery (Hardcover)
Constante Gonzalez Groba, Ewa Barbara Luczak, Urszula Niewiadomska-Flis
R3,828 Discovery Miles 38 280 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Pathologizing Black Bodies reconsiders the black body as a site of cultural and corporeal interchange; one involving violence and oppression, leaving memory and trauma sedimented in cultural conventions, political arrangements, social institutions and, most significantly, materially and symbolically engraved upon the body, with "the self" often deprived of agency and sovereignty. Consisting of three sections, this text focuses on works of the 20th and 21st century fiction and cultural narratives by mainly African American authors, aiming to highlight the different ways in which race has been pathologized in America and examine how the legacies of plantation ideology have been metaphorically inscribed on black bodies. The variety of analytical approaches and thematic foci with respect to theories and discourses surrounding race and the body allow us to delve into this thorny territory in the hope of gaining perspectives about how African-American lives are still shaped and haunted by the legacies of plantation slavery. Furthermore, this volume offers insights into the politics of eugenic corporeality in an illustrative dialogue with the lasting carceral and agricultural effects of life on a plantation. Tracing the degradation and suppression of the black body, both individual and social, this text includes analysis of the pseudo-scientific discourse of social Darwinism and eugenics; the practice of mass incarceration and the excessive punishment of black bodies; and food apartheid and USDA practices of depriving black farmers of individual autonomy and collective agency. Based on such an interplay of discourses, methodologies and perspectives, this volume aims to use literature to further examine the problematic relationship between race and the body and stress that black lives do indeed matter in the USA.
