This book uses historical and interview data to trace the development of Puerto Rican identity in the 20th century. It analyzes how and why Puerto Ricans have maintained a clear sense of distinctiveness in the face of direct and indirect pressures on their identity. After gaining sovereignty over Puerto Rico from Spain in 1898, the United States undertook a sustained campaign to Americanize the island. Despite 50 years of active Americanization and another 40 years of continued United States sovereignty over the island, Puerto Ricans retain a sense of themselves as distinctly and proudly Puerto Rican. This study examines the symbols of Puerto Rican identity, and their use in the complex politics of the island. It shows that identity is dynamic, it is experienced differently by individuals across Puerto Rican society, and that the key symbols of Puerto Rican identity have not remained static over time. Through the study of Puerto Rico, the book investigates and challenges the widely-heard argument that the inevitable result of the export of U.S. mass media and consumer culture throughout the world is the weakening of cultural identities in receiving societies. The book develops the idea that external pressure on collective identity may strengthen that identity rather than, as is often assumed, diminish it.
African Clusters in India examines the discrimination and stereotypes faced by the African migrants in India. It outlines the narratives of the migrants and demonstrates how their 'African identity' gets associated with drugs, prostitution, and cannibalism. The book brings to the fore how the African migrants experience racial profiling based on a conflated African identity, and how this identity gets generalised irrespective of their different nationalities and leads to social exclusion. This monograph argues that the antagonistic urban environment facilitates the formation of a pan-African identity as a response to biases and stereotypes. It also explores the role of language, culture, and politics of representation to show the process of othering and exclusion in India. Drawing on lived experiences of the migrants, the volume engages with the larger discourse of globalization, liberalisation, and migration within the global south. In some parts of the world, race is a key social variable in
criminological debates on crime and criminal justice practice. Yet,
little has been studied regarding the issues of race and crime
internationally. This collection fills that gap, drawing upon
perspectives from 13 countries across 4 continents to provide a

crime discourses, offending, experiences of criminal victimization,
and criminal justice responses in differing societies.

The notion that intelligence is somehow related to race is a notoriously tenacious issue in America. This work covers new ground by presenting a systematic, comparative macro-analysis of the historical experiences of thirteen race and ethnic groups, with emphasis on their economic and political ties to government. The book contains 14 papers delivered and/or published (in the form of conference aftermath) after various international conferences on L2 education (mostly organized by IATEFL Polnad). The consecutive papers deal with different aspects of L2 education performed outside the English language/culture belt (in the way undestoodf by Schumann, 1976c,133-134). The papers included in the book deal with, among others: ESP (mostly sport-connected issues), L1/L2 culture classes, language lesson warm-ups (and close-downs), language class-room dynamics, the teaching of various aspects of British/American English grammar, L2 knowledge revision, the application of tests in the process of L2 retention/revision and - last but not least - a suggestion of L2 assessment different from the popular 'race for the grades' (Covington, Teel, 1994) one. The book was written by the author with almost 40-year long language teaching experience and its most significant purpose is to turn the attention of some less experienced L2 teachers that the teaching of L2 must always be performed from the point of view of an L2 learner if it were to be considered as successful at all. Four anthropologists, Elise Edwards, Ann Elise Lewallen, Bridget Love and Tomomi Yamaguchi, draw on their fieldwork experiences in Japan to demonstrate collectively the inadequacy of both the Code of Ethics developed by the American Anthropological Association (AAA) and the dictates of Institutional Review Boards (IRB) when dealing with messy human realities. The four candidly and critically explore the existential dilemmas they were forced to confront with respect to this inadequacy, for the AAA 's code and IRBs consider neither the vulnerability and powerlessness of ethnographers nor the wholly unethical (and even criminal) deportment of some informants. As Jennifer Robertson points out in her Introduction, whereas the AAA 's Code tends to perpetuate the stereotype of more advantaged fieldworkers studying less advantaged peoples, IRBs appear to protect their home institutions (from possible litigation) rather than living and breathing people whose lives are often ethically compromised irrespective of the presence of an ethnographer. In her commentary, Sabine Fr hst ck, who incurred ample experience with ethical dilemmas in the course of her pathbreaking ethnographic research on Japan 's Self-Defense Forces, situates the four articles in a broader theoretical context, and emphasizes the link between political engagement and ethnographic accuracy. This book seeks to offer a brief, broad, comparative study of ethnic politics that places ethnic conflict within the context of particular political systems. The book is organized around three main themes: the durability of ethnicity as a basis of political identity and source of conflict; the factors which influence ethnic conflict in the contemporary, multi-ethnic and/or multinational world and their relevance to ethnopolitics in democratic, industrialized countries, democratizing countries and the developing world; and, the relationship of ethnicity to forms of social and political differentiation like class and territoriality. To develop these themes, they are explored by comparing and contrasting the experiences of France, Czechoslovakia and its subsequent division, and Nigeria. The theoretical and practical implications of these cases are then explored in terms of how they may apply to other regions, such as Bosnia and Kosovo.
This volume explores the breadth and depth of provision on minority issues within the European Union. The reluctance of the European Union, and separately some of its member states, to address new and existing dynamics of minority issues and the relative inattention to these matters raises new questions for both the EU and other actors in the field of minority rights. Specifically, the evolution of minority rights policies and institutions within the EU and the broader European context, models of governance pertaining to minorities, and the potential for conflict between governing authorities of member states and groups with whom they interact form the core of the debates presented.
This book maintains that there has not been sufficient dialogue and cross-fertilization between various forms of critical approaches to education, notably multicultural/anti-racist education, feminist pedagogy, and critical pedagogy. Contributors from Canada and the United States address educational issues relevant to aboriginal peoples, people of color, and people of religious minorities in light of feminist and critical pedagogical theory. They are sensitive and responsive to the power relations operative in a setting, and address the multiple and contradictory subjectivities of teachers and learners on the basis of race, gender, class, religion, ethnicity, age, and ability.
