Deryn Watson CapBIT 97, Capacity Building for Information Technologies in Education in Developing Countries, from which this publication derives, was an invited IFIP working conference sponsored by Working Groups in secondary (WG 3. 1), elementary (WG 3. 5), and vocational and professional (WG 3. 4) education under the auspices ofIFIP Technical Committee for Education (TC3). The conference was held in Harare, Zimbabwe 25th - 29th August 1997. CapBIT '97 was the first time that the IFIP Technical Committee for Education had held a conference in a developing country. When the Computer Society of Zimbabwe offered to host the event, we determined that the location and conference topic reflect the importance of issues facing countries at all stages of developmen- especially Information Technologies (IT) development. Information Technologies have become, within a short time, one of the basic building blocks of modem industrial society. Understanding IT, and mastering basic skills and concepts of IT, are now regarded as part of the core education of all people around the world, alongside reading and writing. IT now permeates the business environment and underpins the success of modem corporations as well as providing government with cost-effective civil service systems. At the same time, the tools and technologies of IT are of value in the process of learning, and in the organisation and management of learning institutions.

New Media and Learning in the 21st Century - A Socio-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Tzu-Bin Lin, Victor Chen,... New Media and Learning in the 21st Century - A Socio-Cultural Perspective (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Tzu-Bin Lin, Victor Chen, Ching Sing CHAI
R3,324 Discovery Miles 33 240 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This volume brings together conceptualizations and empirical studies that explore the socio-cultural dimension of new media and its implications on learning in the 21st century classroom. The authors articulate their vision of new-media-enhanced learning at a global level. The high-level concept is then re-examined for different degrees of contextualization and localization, for example how a specific form of new media (e-reader) changes specific activities in different cultures. In addition, studies based in Singapore classrooms provide insights as to how these concepts are being transformed and implemented by a co-constructive effort on the part of researchers, teachers and students. Singapore classrooms offer a unique environment to study the theory-practice nexus in that they are high achieving, implicitly grounded in the eastern cultural values and well-equipped with ICT infrastructure. While these studies are arguably the state-of-the-art exemplars that synergize socio-cultural and technological affordances of the current learning environments, they also serve as improvable ideas for further innovations. The interplay between theory and practice lends support to the reciprocal improvements for both. This book contributes to the continuing debate in the field, and will lead to better learning environments in the 21st century.

Jingjing Zhang
R2,217 R1,722 Discovery Miles 17 220 Save R495 (22%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book investigates the use of network technologies in research, and explores how such use potentially changes the nature of professional learning between academics. It attempts to situate the discussion of technology use in real-world research settings, to identify the different forms of participation in intellectual exchange embedded in academic dialogue, and to further contribute to knowledge on how the use of network technology potentially changes the nature of learning. Multiple data collection methods are employed, in two forms of study: a single case study, and a number of individual interviews. The single case study was carried out over a one-year period, and consisted of interviews (22 interviewees), observations, and document review. Individual semi-structured interviews were carried out over a similar period of time with a wider and different population of 24 academics from different Oxford faculties. Half of these were interviewed twice. The main findings presented in this book demonstrate that the direct consequences of technology use are changes to academic dialogue and scholarly communication in general. The change to this critical aspect of research - scholarly communication - has potentially led to more distributed research in interconnected research environments. It is the changes to scholarly communication and the research environment that consequently affect participation in intellectual exchange.

Is Technology Good for Education? (Hardcover): N. Selwyn Is Technology Good for Education? (Hardcover)
N. Selwyn
R1,555 Discovery Miles 15 550 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Digital technologies are a key feature of contemporary education. Schools, colleges and universities operate along high-tech lines, while alternate forms of online education have emerged to challenge the dominance of traditional institutions. According to many experts, the rapid digitization of education over the past ten years has undoubtedly been a good thing . Is Technology Good For Education? offers a critical counterpoint to this received wisdom, challenging some of the central ways in which digital technology is presumed to be positively affecting education. Instead Neil Selwyn considers what is being lost as digital technologies become ever more integral to education provision and engagement. Crucially, he questions the values, agendas and interests that stand to gain most from the rise of digital education. This concise, up-to-the-minute analysis concludes by considering alternate approaches that might be capable of rescuing and perhaps revitalizing the ideals of public education, while not denying the possibilities of digital technology altogether.

Bayesian Networks for Managing Learner Models in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems - Emerging Research and Opportunities (Hardcover):... Bayesian Networks for Managing Learner Models in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems - Emerging Research and Opportunities (Hardcover)
Mouenis Anouar Tadlaoui, Mohamed Khaldi, Rommel Novaes Carvalho
R4,101 Discovery Miles 41 010 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Teachers use e-learning systems to develop course notes and web-based activities to communicate with learners on one side and monitor and classify their progress on the other. Learners use it for learning, communication, and collaboration. Adaptive e-learning systems often employ learner models, and the behavior of an adaptive system varies depending on the data from the learner model and the learner's profile. Without knowing anything about the learner who uses the system, a system would behave in exactly the same way for all learners. Bayesian Networks for Managing Learner Models in Adaptive Hypermedia Systems: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a collection of research on the use of Bayesian networks and methods as a probabilistic formalism for the management of the learner model in adaptive hypermedia. It specifically discusses comparative studies, transformation rules, and case diagrams that support all phases of the learner model and the use of Bayesian networks and multi-entity Bayesian networks to manage dynamic aspects of this model. While highlighting topics such as developing the learner model, learning management systems, and modeling techniques, this book is ideally designed for instructional designers, course administrators, educators, researchers, and professionals.

"New Trends and Technologies in Computer-Aided Learning for Computer-Aided Design" contains the proceedings from the EduTech Workshop, an IFIP TC-10 Working Conference held in Perth, Australia. The workshop aimed to explore the interrelationship between computer-aided technology and computer-aided learning. Computation and communication technologies underpin work and development in many different areas. Among them, Computer-Aided Design of electronic systems and E-Learning technologies are two areas which are different but share many concerns. The design of CAD and E-Learning systems already touches on a number of parallels, such as system interoperability, user interfaces, standardization, EML-based formats, reusability aspects (of content or designs), and intellectual property rights. Furthermore, the teaching of Design Automation tools and methods is particularly amenable to a distant or blended learning setting, and implies the interconnection of typical CAD tools, such as simulators or synthesis tools, with e-learning tools.
