Japan's China Policy - A Relational Power Analysis (Hardcover): Linus Hagstroem Japan's China Policy - A Relational Power Analysis (Hardcover)
Linus Hagstroem
R3,998 Discovery Miles 39 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Japan's China Policy understands Japan's foreign policy in terms of power - one of the most central concepts of political analysis. It contributes a fresh understanding to the subject by developing relational power as an analytical framework and by applying it to significant issues in Japan's China policy: the negotiations for a bilateral investment protection treaty and the disputed Pinnacle (Senkaku/Diaoyu) Islands. Hagstroem demonstrates that Japan exerted power over China in such divergent empirical settings for the most part by using civilian instruments positively, defensively and through non-action. Given that Japan's foreign policy is often portrayed rather enigmatically in terms of power, the unique contribution of Japan's China Policy is to demonstrate how to analyze power aspects of Japan's foreign policy in a more coherent fashion. This revealing approach to Japan's foreign policy will be of huge interest to anyone studying Japanese politics, foreign policy or international relations.

Europeanization and Statebuilding as Everyday Practices - Performing Europe in the Western Balkans (Paperback): Vjosa Musliu Europeanization and Statebuilding as Everyday Practices - Performing Europe in the Western Balkans (Paperback)
Vjosa Musliu
R1,161 Discovery Miles 11 610 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book provides a critical understanding of Europeanization and statebuilding in the Western Balkans, using the notion of everyday practices. This volume argues that it is everyday and mundane events that provide the entry points to showcase a broader set of practices of Europeanization in countries outside the EU. It does this by tracing notions of Europeanization in the everyday statebuilding of Kosovo, Europe Day celebrations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, urban politics in Tirana, and space and place making in Skopje. In doing so, the book shows that everyday events tell us that as much as it is about changing structures, institutions, and economic models, Europeanization is also about changing behaviours and ideas in populations at large. At the same time, the work shows that countries outside the EU use everyday events to perform their belonging to Europe. This book will be of much interest to students of European Studies, Balkan politics, statebuilding, and International Relations generally.

Pure Strategy - Power and Principle in the Space and Information Age (Hardcover): Everett Dolman Pure Strategy - Power and Principle in the Space and Information Age (Hardcover)
Everett Dolman
R4,009 Discovery Miles 40 090 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

"Pure Strategy "is an inquiry into the fundamental truth of strategy; its purpose, place, utility, and value. While it is more properly a philosophy of strategy than a utilitarian investigation, and is meant to be heuristic rather than deterministic, it is nonetheless intended for practicing strategists.
The inquiry is animated by a startling realization: the concept of strategic victory must be summarily discarded. This is not to say that victory has no place in strategy or strategic planning. The outcome of battles and campaigns are variables within the strategist's plan, but victory is a concept that has no meaning there. To the tactical and operational planner, wars are indeed won and lost, and the difference is plain. Success is measurable; failure is obvious. In contrast, the pure strategist understands that war is but one aspect of social and political competition, an ongoing interaction that has no finality. Strategy therefore connects the conduct of war with the intent of politics. It shapes and guides military means in anticipation of a panoply of possible coming events. In the process, strategy changes the context within which events will happen. In this interpretation we see clearly that the goal of strategy is not to culminate events, to establish finality in the discourse between states, but to continue them; to influence state discourse in such a way that it will go forward on favorable terms. For continue it will.
"Pure Strategy "begins with a separation of military strategy and tactics, to show they are both necessary and necessarily at odds. The notion of an operational level of war based on the unique characteristics of land, sea, air, and space power is thendeveloped and offered as the critical link between the two disparate levels. Focus is then on the classic principles of strategy in and for war, and an updating of these principles for the twenty-first century. In the process it is demonstrated that while these principles have remained remarkably consistent and intact, in-depth understanding of them has been influenced by prevailing world-views. Hence the relationship between principles of war and world views is examined and the influence of Newtonian through quantum physics is highlighted. Today, advances in the information and biological sciences clustered under the fields of chaos and complexity analysis dominate sophisticated thinking about modern strategy. Adapting - without fundamentally altering - the classic principles of war to these developing world-views has led to current strategic notions of military transformation and network-centric warfare. In the end it is determined that change and surprise are relentless, and that sound strategy is always about the dynamics of change. Good strategists build adaptability into the structure of their strategy; poor strategists seek to maintain a status quo.

US-China-Taiwan in the Age of Trump and Biden - Towards a Nationalist Strategy (Hardcover): Dean P Chen US-China-Taiwan in the Age of Trump and Biden - Towards a Nationalist Strategy (Hardcover)
Dean P Chen
R4,064 Discovery Miles 40 640 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This book explores U.S.-Taiwan-China relations during both the Trump and Biden administrations, revealing how policy changes under both presidents have impacted Washington's decades-long strategic policy framework for Cross-Strait Relations. By tracing the continuities and changes of U.S. Strategic ambiguity and One-China Policy framework between the Trump and Biden administrations, the book assesses how the foreign policy prism, through which U.S. leaders view China and Taiwan, has experienced a distinct alteration and subsequently led to a policy adjustment. Utilising a wide range of documents and primary material, such as White House documents (ranging from the Clinton to the Biden administrations) in conjunction with interviews with Taiwan officials, this volume brings a detailed portrait of past, present, and potential future U.S.-Taiwan-China relations. Moreover, it provides a succinct examination of U.S. foreign policy traditions such as internationalism, nationalism, and multilateral nationalism (providing a study of U.S.-China relations and policies from Nixon to Biden) and the resulting influence of such traditions on recent U.S. Cross-Strait policy. Presenting a comprehensive study of both the Trump and Biden administrations approach to Taiwan, this will be a valuable resource for any scholar or student of U.S. Foreign Policy, U.S.-Taiwan-China Relations and Cross-Strait Relations.

The Effects of Imprisonment (Hardcover): Andrew Coyle The Effects of Imprisonment (Hardcover)
Andrew Coyle; Edited by Alison Liebling, Shadd Maruna
R5,532 Discovery Miles 55 320 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As the number of prisoners in the UK, USA and elsewhere continues to rise, so have concerns risen about the damaging social and psychological effects of imprisonment - on prisoners themselves, on their families, on prison employees, on the communities they leave behind and, indeed, on society itself. This book brings together a group of leading, international authorities in prisons research to address the complex issues of the effects of imprisonment, to assess the implications and results of research in this field, and to suggest ways of mitigating the often devastating personal and psychological consequences of imprisonment.

Britain's Naval and Political Reaction to the Illegal Immigration of Jews to Palestine, 1945-1949 (Hardcover): Freddy... Britain's Naval and Political Reaction to the Illegal Immigration of Jews to Palestine, 1945-1949 (Hardcover)
Freddy Liebreich
R4,456 Discovery Miles 44 560 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book provides an important shift in the analysis of Britain's policy towards the illegal pot-war Jewish immigration into Palestine. It charts the development of Britain's response to Zionist immigration, from the initial sympathy, as embodied in the Balfour Declaration, through attempts at blockade, refoulement and finally disengagement.
The book exposes differences in policy pursued by the great departments of state like the Foreign, Colonial and War Offices and their legal advisors, and those implemented by the Admiralty. The book argues that the eventual failure of Britain's immigration policy was inevitable in view of the hostility shown by many European nations, and American, towards Britain's ambition to retain her position in the Middle East.

Communitarian International Relations - The Epistemic Foundations of International Relations (Paperback): Emanuel Adler Communitarian International Relations - The Epistemic Foundations of International Relations (Paperback)
Emanuel Adler
R1,607 Discovery Miles 16 070 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

In Emanuel Adler's distinctive constructivist approach to international relations theory, international practices evolve in tandem with collective knowledge of the material and social worlds. This book - comprising a fresh selection of his journal publications, a substantial new introduction, three previously unpublished articles - points IR constructivism in a novel direction, characterized as 'communitarian'. Adler's synthesis does not herald the end of the nation-state; nor does it suggest that agency is unimportant in international life. Rather, it argues that what mediates between individual and state agency and social structures are communities of practice, which are the wellspring and repositories of collective meanings and social practices. The concept of communities of practice casts new light on epistemic communities and security communities, helping to explain why certain ideas congeal into human practices and others do not, and which social mechanisms can facilitate the emergence of normatively better communities.

Continuity and Change in Israeli Security Policy (Paperback): Mark A. Heller Continuity and Change in Israeli Security Policy (Paperback)
Mark A. Heller
R821 Discovery Miles 8 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How should Israel respond to the changing external threats that confront it? This paper argues that the country's traditional security concept is obsolete and must be reformulated. How this is achieved depends on developments within the Middle East and on the outcome of current shifts in Israel's politics and society.

Germany and the Baltic Problem After the Cold War - The Development of a New Ostpolitik, 1989-2000 (Hardcover): Kristina Spohr... Germany and the Baltic Problem After the Cold War - The Development of a New Ostpolitik, 1989-2000 (Hardcover)
Kristina Spohr Readman; Foreword by Hans-Dietrich Genscher
R4,452 Discovery Miles 44 520 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The root question this book addresses is how the new Germany will use its re-found status as a great power. Does Germany - as in the past - aim to dominate Europe? Or has it renounced its imperial ambitions following the trauma of division during the Cold War? In seeking answers to these questions, Kristina Spohr Readman scrutinises the development of Germany's new Ostpolitik (eastern policy) in the period 1989-2000. Against the background of recent European history, she analyses the re-establishment of a special relationship between Bonn/Berlin and Moscow. In particular, she assesses the peculiar geopolitical situation of the Baltic states: caught between a turbulent Russia in the east and a unified Germany in the west. The Baltic case reveals the complexities of a post-Cold War European security architecture in the making.

Outside the Box - How Globalization Changed from Moving Stuff to Spreading Ideas (Hardcover): Marc Levinson Outside the Box - How Globalization Changed from Moving Stuff to Spreading Ideas (Hardcover)
Marc Levinson
R600 Discovery Miles 6 000 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

From the acclaimed author of The Box, a new history of globalization that shows us how to navigate its future Globalization has profoundly shaped the world we live in, yet its rise was neither inevitable nor planned. It is also one of the most contentious issues of our time. While it may have made goods less expensive, it has also sent massive flows of money across borders and shaken the global balance of power. Outside the Box offers a fresh and lively history of globalization, showing how it has evolved over two centuries in response to changes in demographics, technology, and consumer tastes. Marc Levinson, the acclaimed author of The Box, tells the story of globalization through the people who eliminated barriers and pursued new ways of doing business. He shows how the nature of globalization changed dramatically in the 1980s with the creation of long-distance value chains. This new type of economic relationship shifted manufacturing to Asia, destroying millions of jobs and devastating industrial centers in North America, Europe, and Japan. Levinson describes how improvements in transportation, communications, and computing made international value chains possible, but how globalization was taken too far because of large government subsidies and the systematic misjudgment of risk by businesses. As companies began to account properly for the risks of globalization, cross-border investment fell sharply and foreign trade lagged long before Donald Trump became president and the coronavirus disrupted business around the world. In Outside the Box, Levinson explains that globalization is entering a new era in which moving stuff will matter much less than moving services, information, and ideas.

The Organization of Global Negotiations - Constructing the Climate Change Regime (Hardcover): Joanna Depledge The Organization of Global Negotiations - Constructing the Climate Change Regime (Hardcover)
Joanna Depledge
R4,001 Discovery Miles 40 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

* An enormous contribution to the understanding of climate negotiations - the most complex and challenging international regime to date* Explains how governments need to organize ever more demanding multilateral negotiations successfully* Essential reading for those involved in climate negotiations and in planning or participating in other high-level negotiationsThe global negotiations over climate change involved over 180 countries and innumerable observers and other participants, addressing enormously complex and economically vital issues with conflicting agendas. For the UN to create an effective and well-supported international regime required enormous and very skilful organization. Using the metaphor of a theatrical production, this book shows how this was accomplished to produce the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol and the subsequent Bonn and Marrakesh Accords. The author draws out the lessons and implications for other intricate and far-reaching negotiations, not all of which have succeeded so far, such as the WTO trade negotiations at Seattle and Cancun. She identifies six key elements that determine organizational effectiveness as a necessary condition for successful outcomes.

Tourism and Travel during the Cold War - Negotiating Tourist Experiences across the Iron Curtain (Paperback): Christian Noack,... Tourism and Travel during the Cold War - Negotiating Tourist Experiences across the Iron Curtain (Paperback)
Christian Noack, Sune Bechmann Pedersen
R1,258 Discovery Miles 12 580 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

The Iron Curtain was not an impenetrable divide, and contacts between East and West took place regularly and on various levels throughout the Cold War. This book explores how the European tourist industry transcended the ideological fault lines and the communist states attracted an ever-increasing number of Western tourists. Based on extensive original research, it examines the ramifications of tourism, from sun-and-sea package tours to human rights travels, in key Eastern European locations including East Berlin, the Soviet Union, Yugoslavia, and Albania. The book's analysis of the politics, culture, and history of tourism to the East offers important new perspectives on European tourism in the twentieth century.

American Communism and Soviet Russia - With a new introduction by the author (Paperback): Theodore Draper American Communism and Soviet Russia - With a new introduction by the author (Paperback)
Theodore Draper
R1,499 Discovery Miles 14 990 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This companion volume to "The Roots of American Communism" brings to completion what the author describes as the essence of the relationship of American Communism to Soviet Russia in the first decade after the Bolsheviks seized power. The outpouring of new archive materials makes it plain that Draper's premise is direct and to the point: The communist movement "was transformed from a new expression of American radicalism to the American appendage of a Russian revolutionary power." Each generation must find this out for itself, and no better guide exists than the work of master historian Theodore Draper. "American Communism and Soviet Russia" is acknowledged to be the classic, authoritative history of the critical formative period of the American Communist Party. Based on confidential minutes of the top party committees, interviews with party leaders, and public records, this book carefully documents the influence of the Soviet Union on the fundamental nature of American Communism. Draper's reflections on that period in this edition are a fitting capstone to this pioneering effort.

Knowledge, Desire and Power in Global Politics - Western Representations of China's Rise (Paperback): Chengxin Pan Knowledge, Desire and Power in Global Politics - Western Representations of China's Rise (Paperback)
Chengxin Pan
R1,019 Discovery Miles 10 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

'China threat or China opportunity, like beauty, is in the eyes of the beholder. Western imaginations of China come under close scrutiny in this book, in a new, philosophical depth seldom attempted before. Dr Pan displays in full force his analytical skills and his mastery of knowledge, both East and West. Contrary to conventional approaches, he takes a step back to exercise a powerful reflective process to watch the China watchers, with illuminating results. Dr Pan's book deserves wide and careful reading.' - Professor Gerald Chan, University of Auckland, New Zealand 'The rise of China is largely seen as either a threat or an opportunity. Chengxin Pan exposes both of these representations as expressions of Western fears and desires for certainty and predictability. His call for a more reflective and culturally sensitive understanding of China offers an important contribution to one of the big political debates of our time.' - Professor Roland Bleiker, University of Queensland, Australia How is the rise of China perceived in the West? Why is it often labelled as 'threat' and/or 'opportunity'? What are the implications of these China imageries for global politics? Taking up these important questions, this groundbreaking book argues that the dominant Western perceptions of China's rise tell us less about China and more about Western self-imagination and its desire for certainty. Chengxin Pan expertly illustrates how this desire, masked as China 'knowledge', is bound up with the political economy of fears and fantasies, thereby both informing and complicating foreign policy practice in Sino-Western relations. Insofar as this vital relationship is shaped not only by China's rise, but also by the way we conceptualize its rise, this book makes a compelling case for critical reflection on China watching. Knowledge, Desire and Power in Global Politics is the first systematic and deconstructive analysis of contemporary Western representation of China's rise. Setting itself apart from the mainstream empiricist literature, its critical interpretative approach and unconventional and innovative perspective will not only strongly appeal to academics, students and the broader reading public, but also likely spark debate in the field of Chinese international relations.

Building Regional Security in the Middle East - Domestic, Regional and International Influences (Hardcover, Annotated Ed):... Building Regional Security in the Middle East - Domestic, Regional and International Influences (Hardcover, Annotated Ed)
Emily B. Landau, Tamar Malz, Zeev Maoz
R4,439 Discovery Miles 44 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Many scholars in international relations have suggested that the goal of fostering regional security can be furthered through the creation of multilateral webs of relationships, called security structures. These regional security structures are envisioned as a basis upon which groups of states can form mutually beneficial long-term relationships. This discourse took on a new importance in the last 20 years of the 20th century, and especially following new challenges in international security in recent years. Discussions on regional security were initiated in the Middle East in 1992, as part of the Middle East peace process. The collapse of the Oslo process and other regional developments in the latter half of the 1990s have diminished hopes that the initial gains made in this direction might further develop, as violence has again become the primary mode of effecting political changes in the region. On the backdrop of this somewhat dismal current reality in the Middle East the rationale for this volume is thatresearch into regional security structures should nevertheless be pursued. When looking at the long term process of creating regional security, setbacks are not unlikely. The articles that make up this collection focus on the problems that have been encountered, and possible directions for getting regional efforts back on track.

International Intervention in the Balkans since 1995 (Hardcover): Peter Siani-Davies International Intervention in the Balkans since 1995 (Hardcover)
Peter Siani-Davies
R3,996 Discovery Miles 39 960 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This volume offers an analysis of the activities of the international community in the Balkans since the 1995 Dayton Agreement. There has been substantial investment in the region but so far the gains have been limited and doubts remain as to the extent that sustainable security has been enhanced. There is a need for serious reassessment of policies and priorities, but this depends on a careful analysis of past successes and failures. The contributors seek to provide this by examining intervention, not just in terms of military action and the activities of major international agencies at state level, but also the activities of outside NGOs within the local environment.

A New Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Identity (Paperback): Stefania Panebianco A New Euro-Mediterranean Cultural Identity (Paperback)
Stefania Panebianco
R1,381 Discovery Miles 13 810 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The aim of this book is not to make prescriptions, or to provide the reader with recipes for achieving stability in the Mediterranean, but rather to offer, through an interdisciplinary approach, a pluralistic vision of democracy, civil society, human rights and dialogue among civilizations, the aspects of the third volet of the EuroMediterranean Partnership (EMP). Instead of reviewing the content of the EMP, this volume focuses more upon actors and values than upon procedures and specific projects. What are the contradictions of democratization? How can the EMP strengthen and support civil society if it is so difficult to define what civil society is? Is there a unique scale of values when dealing with human rights? To what extent does a dialogue among civilizations lead to compatibility and coexistence? Some reflections are devoted to the identification of crucial issues uniting or separating the actors involved in and addressed by the EMP. These debated issues are tackled to indirectly highlight the achievements of and impediments to the Barcelona Process.

Security Dynamics in the Former Soviet Bloc (Hardcover): Graeme P. Herd, Jennifer D.P. Moroney Security Dynamics in the Former Soviet Bloc (Hardcover)
Graeme P. Herd, Jennifer D.P. Moroney
R4,298 Discovery Miles 42 980 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Security Dynamics in the Former Soviet Bloc focuses on four former Soviet sub-regions (the Baltic Sea region, the Slavic republics, the Black Sea region, and Central Asia) to explore the degree to which 'democratic security', which includes de-politicisation of, and civilian oversight of, the military, resolution of conflicts by international cooperation, and involvement in international organisations. It examines how far states in these regions have developed cooperative foreign and security policies towards their immediate neighbours and key Western states and organisations, explores the interplay between internal and external aspects of democratic security building, and uses case-study examples to show how inter-state bi-lateral and multi-lateral relations are developing.
