China's Workers Under Assault - Exploitation and Abuse in a Globalizing Economy (Hardcover): Anita Chan China's Workers Under Assault - Exploitation and Abuse in a Globalizing Economy (Hardcover)
Anita Chan
R4,644 Discovery Miles 46 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This important book contains case studies with substantive analysis of Chinese workers in a variety of settings: state enterprises, urban collectives, township and village enterprises, domestic private enterprises, and foreign funded enterprises. The cases include urban workers migrant workers from the countryside, and workers who are sent to work outside of China. The analytical framework for these case studies lays out why labor rights violations have been occurring in China and highlights the contex in which these violations operate and the extent to which these selected cases are not isolated incidents. Moreover, the dilemma of Chinese workers is put into international perspective: the context of the international labor market, the setting of competitive minimum wages in Asia, and the concern for Chinese workers' rights taken up by the International Labor Organization (ILO). This book debunks the conventional wisdom that Chinese workers are thriving because the Chinese economy is booming. Indeed the wage structures of these enterprises of different ownership types contribute to widening income disparities in China. The book uncovers what exactly overseas Chinese entrepreneurship (Taiwan and Hong Kong), means at the factory level. And it calls for a new approach to scrutinizing the phenomena of the so-called Chinese economic miracle and it's repercussions on other economies and labor markets.

Legal Liabilities in Emergency Medical Services (Paperback): Thomas D. Schneid Legal Liabilities in Emergency Medical Services (Paperback)
Thomas D. Schneid
R2,638 R2,495 Discovery Miles 24 950 Save R143 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book will address collateral legal consideration that may affect emergency service organizations. Its primary focus is on the relationship between the emergency service employee and the organisation. With the deterioration of "At Will" employment doctrine by Congress and courts, emerging new technologies, and the dwindling number of "unionized shops", emergency service organizations face the potential of increased litigation under new and novel theories in areas which were not even fathomed by emergency service organizations twenty years ago.
Written by a lawyer for non-lawyers, the book is not consumed with the basic legalese that most books of this kind are. It seeks to inform the user of his or her rights under the law in a clear and comprehensive way. Legal Liabilities in EMS will cover topics such as workers compensation, negligence issues, employment discrimination, Family and Medical Leave Act, EMS and privacy in the workplace. To provide extra guidance the text also provides cases exemplifying the issue and an appendix of websites that can provide further information.

Safety and Security at Sea - A Guide to Safer Voyages (Paperback): D.S. Bist Safety and Security at Sea - A Guide to Safer Voyages (Paperback)
D.S. Bist
R1,669 Discovery Miles 16 690 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Safety and Security at Sea is concerned with the safe operation of ships and consequently with preventing errors and oversights. This book contributes to safety where it is most effective - right at the site of work, on board the ship itself. It is here, indisputably, that it will prevent accidents and save lives. It translates theory into practice besides covering several new and current topics. This book is aimed at every deck officer - at every rank and on all ships.
The book also attends to other manifest needs and discusses piracy, stowaways, management of crew on board and several other new and current topics in the interest of safety.
All deck officers will find, when preparing for professional examinations, that the area which the oral section of these examinations at any level (Class One, Two or Three) cover - safety - is the one in which this book specialises. It will be an invaluable aid in passing these exams. By discussing essential details in every part of a voyage, parts that form different subjects in the theoretical section, it becomes an excellent reference book for them. In addition, it will also asist the staff of shipping companies in compiling ship operation manuals.
This book includes the advice of various notices from the Marine Safety Agency and of guidelines from the International Maritime Organisation. It explains their requirements - International safety management code, emergency pollution control plans and others.
In order to deal with ship board work thoroughly, this book takes an entire voyage into account. That is the reason for the sequence of its chapters to correspond to the progress of an actual voyage. The book begins with a shipembarking on a voyage and, in succession, conveys its message in a comfortable language. The last chapter leaves the reader at the beginning of another, but a safer, voyage.
A summary is included at the end of each chapter.
Brings ship operations up to date and gives information on improving professional skills of personnel.
The author writes with the benefit of valuable experience about practical work on a ship.
Includes a discussion of piracy at sea - a phenomenon that has become a major threat at sea today.

Motherlands - How States Push Mothers Out of Employment (Hardcover): Leah Ruppanner Motherlands - How States Push Mothers Out of Employment (Hardcover)
Leah Ruppanner
R1,825 Discovery Miles 18 250 Out of stock

In the absence of federal legislation, each state in the United States has its own policies regarding family leave, job protection for women and childcare. No wonder working mothers encounter such a significant disparity when it comes to childcare resources in America! Whereas conservative states like Nebraska offer affordable, readily available, and high quality childcare, progressive states that advocate for women's economic and political power, like California, have expensive childcare, shorter school days, and mothers who are more likely to work part-time or drop out of the labor market altogether to be available for their children. In Motherlands, Leah Ruppanner cogently argues that states should look to each other to fill their policy voids. She provides suggestions and solutions for policy makers interested in supporting working families. Whether a woman lives in a state with stronger childcare or gender empowerment regimes, at stake is mothers' financial dependence on their partners. Ruppanner advocates for reducing the institutional barriers mothers face when re-entering the workforce. As a result, women would have greater autonomy in making employment decisions following childbirth.

Decision Making in Aviation (Hardcover, New Ed): Don Harris Decision Making in Aviation (Hardcover, New Ed)
Don Harris
R10,600 Discovery Miles 106 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Decision making pervades every aspect of life: people make hundreds of decisions every day. The vast majority of these are trivial and without a right or wrong answer. In some respects there is also nothing extraordinary about pilot decision making. It is only the setting that is different - the underlying cognitive processes are just the same. However, it is the context and the consequences of a poor decision which serve to differentiate aeronautical decision making. Decisions on the flight deck are often made with incomplete information and while under time pressure. The implications for inadequate performance is much more serious than in many other professions. Poor decisions are implicated in over half of all aviation accidents. This volume contains key papers published over the last 25 years providing an overview of the major paradigms by which aeronautical decision making has been investigated. Furthermore, decision making does not occur in isolation. It is a joint function of the flight tasks; knowledge; equipment on the flight deck and other stressors. In this volume of collected papers, works from leading authors in the field consider all these aspects of aeronautical decision making.

Chinese Politics and Labor Movements (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020): Jake Lin Chinese Politics and Labor Movements (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2020)
Jake Lin
R2,087 Discovery Miles 20 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book brings a radically new voice to the debate in the field of Chinese politics and labor movement. Using a psychological and cognitive approach, the author examines workers and activists' everyday interpretation of the source of their problems, their prospect of labor movements, and their sense of solidarity. The project shows how workers themselves have become a part of the apparatus of state repression and argues that Chinese workers have not acquired sufficient cognitive strength to become the much hoped-for agent for political change, which hinders labor activism from developing into a sustainable social movement. Multidisciplinary in its approach, the monograph provides analysis of Chinese politics, labor studies, international political economy, social movements, and contentious politics.

Defending the Swedish Model - Social Democrats, Trade Unions, and Labor Migration Policy Reform (Hardcover): Gregg Bucken-Knapp Defending the Swedish Model - Social Democrats, Trade Unions, and Labor Migration Policy Reform (Hardcover)
Gregg Bucken-Knapp
R3,174 Discovery Miles 31 740 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Across Europe, the prospect of a rapidly shrinking workforce has put increased labor migration back on the political agenda. However, for many on the left, concerns exist that less restrictive labor migration policies threaten core features of the social democratic project. This is perhaps clearest in Sweden, which in late 2008 adopted a liberal approach to third-country national labor migration, allowing employers to hire freely from outside the European Union. Defending the Swedish Model explores the debate leading up to this reform, focusing on the preferences of the Swedish Social Democratic Party (SAP) and the Swedish Trade Union Confederation (LO). While generally positive to the economic potential of increased labor migration, these allies remained highly skeptical towards calls from employers and bourgeois parties for liberalization. Bucken-Knapp argues that the SAP and LO develop their labor migration policy preferences on the basis of whether specific reform alternatives are perceived as being consistent with, or as undermining, the Swedish model. In the case of third-country nationals, both allies considered liberalization a threat to full employment aims, instead seeking to preserve an influential role for the state labor market board and organized labor. Bucken-Knapp also focuses on the Swedish labor migration debate prior to the 2004 enlargement of the European Union, showing how SAP concerns over potential abuse of the universal welfare state led to its support for transitional arrangements. Defending the Swedish Model illuminates the challenges faced by social democrats and trade unions when considering the need for increased labor migration.

Twilight of the Self - The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism (Hardcover): Michael Thompson Twilight of the Self - The Decline of the Individual in Late Capitalism (Hardcover)
Michael Thompson
R2,325 Discovery Miles 23 250 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In this new work, political theorist Michael J. Thompson argues that modern societies are witnessing a decline in one of the core building blocks of modernity: the autonomous self. Far from being an illusion of the Enlightenment, Thompson contends that the individual is a defining feature of the project to build a modern democratic culture and polity. One of the central reasons for its demise in recent decades has been the emergence of what he calls the "cybernetic society," a cohesive totalization of the social logics of the institutional spheres of economy, culture and polity. These logics have been progressively defined by the imperatives of economic growth and technical-administrative management of labor and consumption, routinizing patterns of life, practices, and consciousness throughout the culture. Evolving out of the neoliberal transformation of economy and society since the 1980s, the cybernetic society has transformed how that the individual is articulated in contemporary society. Thompson examines the various pathologies of the self and consciousness that result from this form of socialization—such as hyper-reification, alienated moral cognition, false consciousness, and the withered ego—in new ways to demonstrate the extent of deformation of modern selfhood. Only with a more robust, more socially embedded concept of autonomy as critical agency can we begin to reconstruct the principles of democratic individuality and community.

The Laboring of Communication - Will Knowledge Workers of the World Unite? (Hardcover): Vincent Mosco, Catherine McKercher The Laboring of Communication - Will Knowledge Workers of the World Unite? (Hardcover)
Vincent Mosco, Catherine McKercher
R3,570 Discovery Miles 35 700 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The Laboring of Communication examines the transformation of work and of worker organizations in today's Information Society. The book focuses on how traditional trade unions and new worker associations growing out of social movements are coming together to address the crisis of organized labor. It concentrates on the creative responses of the technical and cultural workers in the mass media, telecommunications, and information technology industries. Concentrating on political economy, labor process, and feminist theory, it proceeds to offer several ways of thinking about communication workers and the nature of the society in which they work. Drawing on interviews and the documentary record, the book offers case studies of successful and unsuccessful efforts among both traditional and alternative worker organizations in the United States and Canada. It concludes by addressing the thorny issue of outsourcing, describing how global labor federations and nascent worker organizations in the developing world are coming together to develop creative solutions.

Filipino Time - Affective Worlds and Contracted Labor (Hardcover): Allan Punzalan Isaac Filipino Time - Affective Worlds and Contracted Labor (Hardcover)
Allan Punzalan Isaac
R2,408 Discovery Miles 24 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

From spectacular deaths in a drag musical to competing futures in a call center, Filipino Time examines how contracted service labor performed by Filipinos in the Philippines, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States generates vital affects, multiple networks, and other lifeworlds as much as it disrupts and dislocates human relations. Affective labor and time are re-articulated in a capacious archive of storytelling about the Filipino labor diaspora in fiction, musical performance, ethnography, and documentary film. Exploring these cultural practices, Filipino Time traces other ways of sensing, making sense of, and feeling time with others, by weaving narratives of place and belonging out of the hostile but habitable textures of labortime. Migrant subjects harness time and the imagination in their creative, life making capacities to make communal worlds out of one steeped in the temporalities and logics of capital.
