Nitric Oxide and Free Radicals in Peripheral Neurotransmission (Hardcover, 2000 ed.): Stanley Kalsner Nitric Oxide and Free Radicals in Peripheral Neurotransmission (Hardcover, 2000 ed.)
Stanley Kalsner
R4,208 Discovery Miles 42 080 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

"Nitric Oxide and Free Radicals in Peripheral Neurotransmission" is a welcome addition to the literature and describes current research into the role of nitric oxide in the peripheral nervous system and its associated organs. Topics covered range from general consideration of nitrergic transmission, in its broadest sense, to elaboration of our current understanding of the role of nitric oxide in transmission in individual peripheral organs, including its role as a backup, or alternate as well as chief transmitter. The influence of nitric oxide and related compounds on the more conventional modes of autonomic transmission are also considered. Aimed at students and researchers in the areas of neuroscience and physiology, "Nitric Oxide and Free Radicals in Peripheral Neurotransmission" also covers the emerging role of abnormal nitric oxide function in disease states and, where appropriate, as potential avenues of therapy.

Justin Sonnenburg, Erica Sonnenburg; Foreword by Andrew Weil
R436 R408 Discovery Miles 4 080 Save R28 (6%) Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The groundbreaking science behind the surprising source of good health Stanford University's Justin and Erica Sonnenburg are pioneers in the most exciting and potentially transformative field of human health and wellness, the study of the relationship between our bodies and the trillions of organisms representing thousands of species to which our bodies play host, the microbes we call the microbiota. The Sonnenburgs argue that the microbiota determines in no small part whether we're sick or healthy, fit or obese, sunny or moody-and that the microbiota has always been with us, coevolving with humans and entwining its functions with ours. They show us that humans are really composite organisms with microbial and human parts. But now, because of changes to diet, antibiotic over-use, and over-sterilization, our gut microbiota is facing a "mass extinction event," which may explain the mysterious spike in some of our most troubling modern afflictions, from food allergies to autism, cancer to depression. It doesn't have to be this way. The Good Gut is a groundbreaking work that offers a new plan for health that focuses on how to nourish your microbiota, including recipes and a menu plan. The Sonnenburgs show how we can keep our microbiota off the endangered species list and strengthen the community that inhabits our gut and thereby improve our own health. In this important and timely investigation, they look at safe alternatives to antibiotics; dietary and lifestyle choices to encourage microbial health; the management of the aging microbiota; and the nourishment of your own individual microbiome. Caring for our gut microbes may be the most important health choice we can make.

The Auditory System in Sleep (Paperback, 2nd edition): Ricardo Velluti The Auditory System in Sleep (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Ricardo Velluti
R2,109 R2,001 Discovery Miles 20 010 Save R108 (5%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Auditory System in Sleep, Second Edition presents a view of a sensory system working in a different state, that of the sleeping brain. This updated edition contains new chapters on topics such as implanted deaf patients and sleep and tinnitus treatments. It is written for basic auditory system and sleep researchers, as well as practitioners and clinicians in the Auditory/Sensory Neurosciences and Sleep Medicine. As the auditory system is always "open", thus receiving information from the environment and the body itself (conscious and unconscious data), the incoming sensory information may alter sleep and waking physiology, and conversely, the sleeping brain. This book draws information from evoked potentials, fMRI, PET, SPECT, lesions, and more.

Growth Factors and the Cardiovascular System (Hardcover, 1993 ed.): P. Cummins Growth Factors and the Cardiovascular System (Hardcover, 1993 ed.)
P. Cummins
R5,193 Discovery Miles 51 930 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nature is totally amoral! There are at least 3-4 million people in France alone who suffer from arterial hypertension, and whose cardiovascular system is submitted day and night to both a haemodynamic and hormonal stress. In all cases, the vasculature hypertrophies as does the myocardium. This growth process is obviously mainly detrimental at the outset since it lowers compliance of the arteries and makes them stiffer. In contrast, myocardial hypertrophy is initially beneficial since the growth process multiplies the number of contractile units and by so doing improves external work. In addition, according to Starling's law, wall stress is lowered. Growth factors playa major role in this amoral process as a trigger for hypertrophy at the vascular level, and very likely at the level of the myocardium. Another major point of interest is the role of growth factors as determinants of restenosis after angioplasty and also of atherogenesis. Several chapters in this book are directly or indirectly concerned with this problem which is far from being purely academic since several groups are currently trying to control these processes by gene transfer. Certainly, one of the major clinical questions arising from such studies is why restenosis is not more frequent in clinical practice. After de-endotheliazation, the biologist would predict on the basis of recent studies on growth factors, and in contrast with current clinical opinion, that hypertrophy would occur in all cases with more or less complete restenosis.

Finding the Nerve - The Story of Impedance Neurography (Paperback): Philip Cory Finding the Nerve - The Story of Impedance Neurography (Paperback)
Philip Cory
R1,465 Discovery Miles 14 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Finding the Nerve: The Story of Impedance Neurography discusses research that elucidates the nature of nerve simulation via externally applied electrical fields, and how it has led to an entirely new understanding of neuronal cell membrane biophysics and defined a novel nerve imaging technology. It details how these discoveries came about and the nature of research that derives from unexplained clinical observations. The primary technology, impedance neurography, is a wholly new way of nerve-specific visualization in 2-D or 3-D, with the ability to define both normal and abnormal functioning of nerves, heretofore unavailable from techniques such as MRI neurography. This is of particular importance with respect to the obesity epidemic where physicians performing nerve-related procedures cannot use ultrasound visualization due to the depth limitations of that technology.

Protein Kinase Protocols (Hardcover, 2001 ed.): Alastair D. Reith Protein Kinase Protocols (Hardcover, 2001 ed.)
Alastair D. Reith
R2,703 Discovery Miles 27 030 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The wealth of primary information provided by genome sequencing projects in various species is of enormous potential value in our efforts to understand biological funtions and molecular interactions not only in normal development and cellular physiology, but also in diseases. However, utili- tion of these resources can come only from the development and application of a fully integrated set of molecular, biochemical, biophysical, and genetic skill bases. As key components of many cell signalling pathways, protein kinases are implicated in a broad variety of diseases, including cancers and neurodegenerative conditions, and offer considerable potential as tractable targets for therapeutic intervention. With these issues in mind, the present vlume has been compiled to provide examples of core skills required for ana- sis of knase-mediated signalling cascades, with particular emphasis on iden- fication of proteins according to interactive relationships and analysis of functional properties of signalling proteins. Compilation of Protein Kinase Protocols has been possible only as a - sult of the effort of all the contributors, and I am grateful to them for taking the time and having the patience to desseminate the detailied information - quired in order that others can succeed in the application of these techniques. Most importantly, I extend my deepest gratitude to Chris, Emma, and Helen for making it all worthwhile Alastair D. R4,019 Discovery Miles 40 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Since the epochal discovery of the radical and highly toxic gas nitric oxide (NO) as a signaling molecule, two other no less toxic gases - carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S) - have been found to also be involved in a plethora of physiological and pathophysiological functions. The gases termed gasotransmitters play an increasingly important role in understanding how signalling into and between cells is modulated and fine-tuned. The advent of gasotransmitters has profoundly changed our way of thinking about biosynthesis, liberation, storage and action mechanisms in cellular signaling. In recent years an impressive amount of new data, distributed throughout the existing literature, has been generated. For this book the editors have recruited distinguished colleagues in the field to summarize and review important biological, pharmacological and medical functions and their implications, as well as methods for the detection of gasotransmitters.
