Essential Classical Mechanics: Problems And Solutions (Paperback): Choonkyu Lee, Hyunsoo Min Essential Classical Mechanics: Problems And Solutions (Paperback)
Choonkyu Lee, Hyunsoo Min
R1,274 Discovery Miles 12 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

'The authors of this book offer a very strong reason for the study of classical mechanics describing it 'as the base on which the whole pyramid of modern physics has been erected' ... In order that students can gauge their understanding of the various topics, many exercises are introduced. Some of those should be straightforward whilst others are quite challenging ... The authors are to be thanked for delivering a highly readable text which should assure a continued supply of practitioners of classical mechanics and its applications.'Contemporary PhysicsProblem solving in physics is not simply a test of understanding, but an integral part of learning. This book contains complete step-by-step solutions for all exercise problems in Essential Classical Mechanics, with succinct chapter-by-chapter summaries of key concepts and formulas. The degree of difficulty with problems varies from quite simple to very challenging; but none too easy, as all problems in physics demand some subtlety of intuition. The emphasis of the book is not so much in acquainting students with various problem-solving techniques as in suggesting ways of thinking. For undergraduate and graduate students, as well as those involved in teaching classical mechanics, this book can be used as a supplementary text or as an independent study aid.

Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2 (Hardcover, 1991 ed.): A.C.F. Cocks, A. R. S. Pontern Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials 2 (Hardcover, 1991 ed.)
A.C.F. Cocks, A. R. S. Pontern
R1,460 Discovery Miles 14 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-l was published in 1989 as the proceedings of a Colloquium held in Leicester in the summer of 1988. The Colloquium examined the creep response of a wide range of materials, including metals, engineering ceramics and ice, with the aim of determining similarities in the response of these materials and the way in which their behaviour is modelled. The proceedings were structured so as nature of the Colloquium, with papers to reflect the interdisciplinary grouped together largely on the basis of the phenomena being examined, rather than by class of material. Mechanics of Creep Brittle Materials-2 was held in Leicester in Septem ber 1991 to discuss advances made in our understanding of the response of creep brittle materials since the first Colloquium. The scope of the Colloquium was extended to include mineral salts, concrete and com posite systems. These proceedings are once more structured so that the reader can readily compare the response of different material systems and evaluate the suitability of the range of models presented to the materials he is interested in. In fact a number of papers directly compare the of a range of different materials with the aim of identifying behaviour general strategies for the testing and modelling of creeping materials.

Energy Market Integration in East Asia - Deepening Understanding and Moving Forward (Paperback): Yanrui Wu, Fukunari Kimura,... Energy Market Integration in East Asia - Deepening Understanding and Moving Forward (Paperback)
Yanrui Wu, Fukunari Kimura, Xunpeng Shi
R1,465 Discovery Miles 14 650 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

East Asian nations through the dialogue between ASEAN and its partners have been promoting energy market integration (EMI) for a decade. The formation of the East Asian Summit (EAS) group in 2005 adds new momentum to the EMI course in the region. The objective of this edited volume is to present new insights into the understanding of EMI in East Asia and draw implications for further development. This book is the first publication of its kind exclusively focusing on EMI in East Asia. The chapters are written by a distinguished group of specialists in the field of energy policy, business and economics. The covered topics range from the general debates about EMI to regional policy responses. A variety of qualitative and quantitative methods are employed in this book. For qualitative methods, public goods theory and the comparative study method are two examples. The quantitative methods include economic growth theory, principle component approach, input-output table, computable general equilibrium (CGE) models and econometric techniques. Important policy implications can be drawn from the findings. One clear message is that EMI should be promoted actively but in a gradual, incremental manner. Other policy implications are related to inter-regional governance, infrastructure development and gas market integration. The content has not been published elsewhere and hence makes a unique contribution to the literature. There are also case studies of specific energy sectors such as petroleum and natural gas. Overall this book should be of interest to a wide audience such as academia, business analysts and policy makers.

Recent Wireless Power Transfer Technologies via Radio Waves (Hardcover): Naoki Shinohara Recent Wireless Power Transfer Technologies via Radio Waves (Hardcover)
Naoki Shinohara
R2,440 Discovery Miles 24 400 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) is considered to be an innovative game changing technology. The same radio wave and electromagnetic field theory and technology for wireless communication and remote sensing is applied for WPT. In conventional wireless communication systems, information is "carried" on a radio wave and is then transmitted over a distance. In WPT however, the energy of the radio wave itself is transmitted over a distance. Wireless communication technology has proven to be extremely useful, however in future it should be even more useful to apply both wireless communication and wireless power technologies together. There are various WPT technologies, e.g. inductive near field WPT, resonance coupling WPT, WPT via radio waves, and laser power transfer. Recent Wireless Power Transfer Technologies via Radio Waves focusses on recent technologies and applications of the WPT via radio waves in far field. The book also covers the history, and future, of WPT via radio waves, as well as safety, EMC and coexistence of radio waves for WPT. Technical topics discussed in the book include: - Radio Wave Generation - Radio Wave Amplification with Solid States Circuit and Microwave Tubes - Antenna and Beam Forming Technologies - Radio Wave Conversion/Rectification to Electricity - Battery-less Sensor Applications toward Internet of Things (IoT) - Solar Power Satellite Application - Safety, EMC, Coexistence of Radio Waves for the WPT WPT is an old technology based on the basic theory of radio waves, however WPT is also a state-of-the-art technology for the latest applications in IoT, sensor networks, wireless chargers for mobile phones, and solar power satellite. The theory behind these technologies, as well as applications, are explained in this book.

Carbon Capture and Storage - Technologies, Policies, Economics, and Implementation Strategies (Paperback): King Abdullah... Carbon Capture and Storage - Technologies, Policies, Economics, and Implementation Strategies (Paperback)
King Abdullah Petroleum Studies, Saud M. Al-Fattah, Murad F. Barghouty, Bashir O. Dabbousi
R2,400 Discovery Miles 24 000 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book focuses on issues related to a suite of technologies known as "Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)," which can be used to capture and store underground large amounts of industrial CO2 emissions. It addresses how CCS should work, as well as where, why, and how these technologies should be deployed, emphasizing the gaps to be filled in terms of research and development, technology, regulations, economics, and public acceptance. The book is divided into three parts. The first part helps clarify the global context in which greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions can be analyzed, highlights the importance of fossil-fuel producing and consuming nations in positively driving clean fossil-fuel usage, and discusses the applicability of this technology on a global and regional level in a timely yet responsible manner. The second part provides a comprehensive overview of present and future technologies for the three elements of the CCS chain: CO2 capture, transport, and geological storage. The third part addresses the key drivers for CCS deployment worldwide. It provides analysis and assessment of the economic, regulatory, social, and environmental aspects associated with CCS development and deployment on a global scale. It offers a somewhat different perspective on CCS deployment by highlighting the environmental and socio-economic costs and benefits of CCS solutions compared to alternatives. The book concludes with potential options and guidelines for sustainable and responsible CCS scale-up as a way to address prevailing global energy, environment, and climate concerns.

Advanced Concepts for Renewable Energy Supply of Data Centres (Hardcover): Jaume Salom, Thorsten Urbaneck, Eduard Oro Advanced Concepts for Renewable Energy Supply of Data Centres (Hardcover)
Jaume Salom, Thorsten Urbaneck, Eduard Oro
R2,299 Discovery Miles 22 990 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The rapid increase of cloud computing, high performance computing (HPC) and the vast growth in Internet and Social Media use have aroused the interest in energy consumption and the carbon footprint of Data Centres. Data Centres primarily contain electronic equipment used for data processing (servers), data storage (storage equipment), and communications (network equipment). Collectively, this equipment processes, stores, and transmits digital information and is known as information technology (IT) equipment. Advanced Concepts for Renewable Energy Supply of Data Centres introduces a number of technical solutions for the supply of power and cooling energy into Data Centres with enhanced utilisation of renewable energy sources in order to achieve low energy Data Centres. Because of the high energy density nature of these unique infrastructures, it is essential to implement energy efficiency measures and reduce consumption before introducing any renewable energy source. A holistic approach is used with the objective of integrating many technical solutions such as management of the IT (Information Technology) load, efficient electrical supply to the IT systems, Low-Ex air-conditioning systems, interaction with district heating and cooling networks, re-use of heat, free cooling (air, seawater, groundwater), optimal use of heat and cold storage, electrical storage and integration in smart grids. This book is therefore a catalogue of advanced technical concepts that could be integrated into Data Centres portfolio in order to increase the overall efficiency and the share of renewable energies in power and cooling supply. Based on dynamic energy models implemented in TRNSYS some concepts are deeply evaluated through yearly simulations. The results of the simulation are illustrated with Sankey charts, where the energy flows per year within the subsystems of each concept for a selected scenario are shown, and graphs showing the results of parametric analysis. A set of environmental metrics (as the non-renewable primary energy) and financial metrics (CAPEX and OPEX) as well of energy efficiency metrics like the well-known PUE, are described and used to evaluate the different technical concepts.

Determinism and Self-Organization of Human Perception and Performance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019): Till Frank Determinism and Self-Organization of Human Perception and Performance (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2019)
Till Frank
R4,785 Discovery Miles 47 850 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book discusses human perception and performance within the framework of the theory of self-organizing systems. To that end, it presents a variety of phenomena and experimental findings in the research field, and provides an introduction to the theory of self-organization, with a focus on amplitude equations, order parameter and Lotka-Volterra equations. The book demonstrates that relating the experimental findings to the mathematical models provides an explicit account for the causal nature of human perception and performance. In particular, the notion of determinism versus free will is discussed in this context. The book is divided into four main parts, the first of which discusses the relationship between the concept of determinism and the fundamental laws of physics. The second part provides an introduction to using the self-organization approach from physics to understand human perception and performance, a strategy used throughout the remainder of the book to connect experimental findings and mathematical models. In turn, the third part of the book focuses on investigating performance guided by perception: climbing stairs and grasping tools are presented in detail. Perceptually relevant bifurcation parameters in the mathematical models are also identified, e.g. in the context of walk-to-run gait transitions. Chains of perceptions and actions together with their underlying mechanisms are then presented, and a number of experimental phenomena - such as selective attention, priming, child play, bistable perception, retrieval-induced forgetting, functional fixedness and memory effects exhibiting hysteresis with positive or negative sign - are discussed. Human judgment making, internal experiences such as dreaming and thinking, and Freud's concept of consciousness are also addressed. The fourth and last part of the book explores several specific topics such as learning, social interactions between two people, life trajectories, and applications in clinical psychology. In particular, episodes of mania and depression under bipolar disorder, perception under schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive rituals are discussed. This book is intended for researchers and graduate students in psychology, physics, applied mathematics, kinesiology, and the sport sciences who want to learn about the foundations of the field. Written for a mixed audience, the experiments and concepts are presented using non-technical language throughout. In addition, each chapter includes more advanced sections for modelers in the fields of physics and applied mathematics.

Newton And The Great World System (Paperback): Peter Rowlands Newton And The Great World System (Paperback)
Peter Rowlands
R1,251 Discovery Miles 12 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Mathematics is, in many ways, the most generic and abstract of all systems of human thought. Once Newton found he could describe dynamics and planetary motions using purely mathematical laws and deductive processes, he understood that there was no limit to what else could be explained - given time and ingenuity every aspect of Nature would find its mathematical roots. Newton himself repeatedly stated how aspects of chemistry, biology and even human thought could be accessed by his method. He also acknowledged how immense the task would be, involving many contributors over many centuries, however once the system was in place, it could be extended indefinitely. Although not fully understood during his lifetime, the Newtonian method has since been applied to many subjects outside of physics, including chemistry, physiology and philosophy. This book analyses the Newtonian method and demonstrates how it represents the very roots of our understanding of the great world system we live in today. This unique book is published as the second of a three-part set for Newtonian scholars, historians of science, philosophers of science and others interested in Newtonian physics. All Titles: 1.Newton and Modern Physics 2.Newton and the Great World System 3.Newton - Innovation and Controversy

It was organized by Polish National Committee of IUTAM, Institute of Fundamental Technological Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPPTPAN)andWarsawUniversityofTechnology. TheCongressvenue was the main building of Warsaw University of Technology. The idea of congresses devoted to mechanics, can be traced back to a conference on problems of?uid mechanics in Innsbruck, 1922. It was organized by four individuals, whose names, are and will, remain very wellknowntonextgenerationsofscientists,C.W.Oseen,T.Levi-Civite, T.vonKarm ' ' ' an,andL.Prandtl. Thisconferencewassofruitful, thatthe organizers decided to arrange similar meetings in the future, every four years, and to extend the scope of the future meetings to include solid mechanics. Hence a series of meetings started eighty years agowiththe st 1 ICTAM held in Delft, Netherlands. From the meetingsoftheCongress Committee sprang the idea of a more permanent organization to look out for the world interests in the mechanical sciences. Thus, IUTAM, theInternational Unionof Theor- ical and Applied Mechanics, was formed on September 26, 1946. In 1947 IUTAM became a member of ICSU, the International Council of Sci- ti?c Unions, itself founded in 1931. The highest authority of IUTAMis the General Assembly, with delegates from the Adhering Organizations, each of which is a?liated with a national learned society in a given country. Ocean Energy - Governance Challenges for Wave and Tidal Stream Technologies (Hardcover): Glen Wright, Sandy Kerr, Kate Johnson Ocean Energy - Governance Challenges for Wave and Tidal Stream Technologies (Hardcover)
Glen Wright, Sandy Kerr, Kate Johnson
R4,918 Discovery Miles 49 180 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Energy from wave and tidal power is a key component of current policies for renewable sources of energy. This book provides the first comprehensive exploration of legal, economic, and social issues related to the emerging ocean energy industry, in particular wave and tidal energy technologies. This industry is rapidly developing, and considerable technical literature has developed around the technology. However, it is shown that challenges relating to regulation and policy are major impediments to industry development, and these aspects have not previously been sufficiently highlighted and studied. The book informs policymakers, industry participants, and researchers of the key issues in this developing field. Ocean energy is considered in the context of the blue economy and an industrialising ocean, and the topics covered include: development of policy (policy instruments, risk and delay in technology development); legal aspects (consenting processes, resource management, impact assessment); human interactions (conflicts, consultation, community benefits); and spatial planning of the marine environment. While offshore wind energy, sited in the oceans but not strictly derived from the ocean, is not the primary focus of the book, there is also discussion of the similarities and differences between offshore wind and wave and tidal power policy dimensions.
