Universe, The: A Challenge To The Mind (Paperback): Jacques Vanier Universe, The: A Challenge To The Mind (Paperback)
Jacques Vanier
R1,467 Discovery Miles 14 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

In this book the author gives a comprehensive picture of the physical laws that appear to regulate the functioning of the Universe from the atomic to the cosmic world. The book offers a description of the main fields of physics - classical physics, relativity, quantum mechanics and particle physics - as they are applied to the atomic world and the cosmos to describe how the whole Universe has evolved to the present state. The description concentrates on the essentials, describing our present knowledge of those physical laws and outlining our limitations in understanding the whole picture. This is done essentially without equations, except for a few important ones. The text includes a short Annex for mathematically inclined readers who wish to see how the physical principles and laws expressed in words can be visualized in the language of mathematics, but the book can be read without referring to that Annex. Also, The Universe explains in depth those laws and outlines their limitations. The author, however, does this in an accessible language that should be understandable to non-specialists. In particular, he occasionally uses two young characters placed in various situations to explain the physics involved in those situations by means of their observations. The author uses also numerous clear pictures and graphics that make the text more easily comprehensible.

Chaotic Pendulum, The (Hardcover): Moshe Gitterman Chaotic Pendulum, The (Hardcover)
Moshe Gitterman
R2,079 Discovery Miles 20 790 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Pendulum is the simplest nonlinear system, which, however, provides the means for the description of different phenomena in Nature that occur in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, communications, economics and sociology. The chaotic behavior of pendulum is usually associated with the random force acting on a pendulum (Brownian motion). Another type of chaotic motion (deterministic chaos) occurs in nonlinear systems with only few degrees of freedom. This book presents a comprehensive description of these phenomena going on in underdamped and overdamped pendula subject to additive and multiplicative periodic and random forces. No preliminary knowledge, such as complex mathematical or numerical methods, is required from a reader other than undergraduate courses in mathematical physics. A wide group of researchers, along with students and teachers will, thus, benefit from this definitive book on nonlinear dynamics.

Classical Mechanics Illustrated By Modern Physics: 42 Problems With Solutions (Hardcover): David Guery Odelin, Thierry Lahaye Classical Mechanics Illustrated By Modern Physics: 42 Problems With Solutions (Hardcover)
David Guery Odelin, Thierry Lahaye
R2,211 Discovery Miles 22 110 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In many fields of modern physics, classical mechanics plays a key role. However, the teaching of mechanics at the undergraduate level often confines the applications to old-fashioned devices such as combinations of springs and masses, pendulums, or rolling cylinders. This book provides an illustration of classical mechanics in the form of problems (at undergraduate level) inspired - for the most part - by contemporary research in physics, and resulting from the teaching and research experience of the authors. A noticeable feature of this book is that it emphasizes the experimental aspects of a large majority of problems. All problems are accompanied by detailed solutions: the calculations are clarified and their physical significance commented on in-depth. Within the solutions, the basic concepts from undergraduate lectures in classical mechanics, necessary to solve the problems, are recalled when needed. The authors systematically mention recent bibliographical references (most of them freely accessible via the Internet) allowing the reader to deepen their understanding of the subject, and thus contributing to the building of a general culture in physics.

The extensive discussions on inverse problems of mechanical systems and the detailed analysis of stability of classical systems certainly make this an outstanding textbook.

Geometry from Dynamics, Classical and Quantum (Hardcover, 2015 ed.): Jose F. Carinena, Alberto Ibort, Giuseppe Marmo, Giuseppe... Geometry from Dynamics, Classical and Quantum (Hardcover, 2015 ed.)
Jose F. Carinena, Alberto Ibort, Giuseppe Marmo, Giuseppe Morandi
R3,722 Discovery Miles 37 220 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book describes, by using elementary techniques, how some geometrical structures widely used today in many areas of physics, like symplectic, Poisson, Lagrangian, Hermitian, etc., emerge from dynamics. It is assumed that what can be accessed in actual experiences when studying a given system is just its dynamical behavior that is described by using a family of variables ("observables" of the system). The book departs from the principle that ''dynamics is first'' and then tries to answer in what sense the sole dynamics determines the geometrical structures that have proved so useful to describe the dynamics in so many important instances. In this vein it is shown that most of the geometrical structures that are used in the standard presentations of classical dynamics (Jacobi, Poisson, symplectic, Hamiltonian, Lagrangian) are determined, though in general not uniquely, by the dynamics alone. The same program is accomplished for the geometrical structures relevant to describe quantum dynamics. Finally, it is shown that further properties that allow the explicit description of the dynamics of certain dynamical systems, like integrability and super integrability, are deeply related to the previous development and will be covered in the last part of the book. The mathematical framework used to present the previous program is kept to an elementary level throughout the text, indicating where more advanced notions will be needed to proceed further. A family of relevant examples is discussed at length and the necessary ideas from geometry are elaborated along the text. However no effort is made to present an ''all-inclusive'' introduction to differential geometry as many other books already exist on the market doing exactly that. However, the development of the previous program, considered as the posing and solution of a generalized inverse problem for geometry, leads to new ways of thinking and relating some of the most conspicuous geometrical structures appearing in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics.

Advances in Environmental Engineering Research in Poland (Hardcover): Malgorzata Pawlowska, Lucjan Pawlowski Advances in Environmental Engineering Research in Poland (Hardcover)
Malgorzata Pawlowska, Lucjan Pawlowski
R4,065 Discovery Miles 40 650 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A side-effect of numerous anthropogenic activities involves unfavourable changes in the natural environment. The acquisition of natural resources, especially fossil fuels, solid waste and wastewater production, as well as emission of gases and particulate matter from industrial plants and means of transport contribute to disturbances in the natural cycles of elements between different parts of the environment. Local changes lead to global effects, changing the composition of atmosphere, its capacity for absorbing the infrared radiation and temperature, which has further repercussions in the form of weather anomalies, melting glaciers, flooding, migration or extinction of species, social problems, etc. These global changes can be mitigated by local remedial actions, simultaneously taken all over the world, including Poland. Only the joint efforts of communities from different countries can be successful in preserving the world as we know it for the future generations. Realisation of this task requires the cooperation of experts across many fields of science, environmental engineering being one of most relevant. It comprises the engineering actions taken to preserve the balance of the natural environment or restore it if degradation has occurred. This monograph presents several key issues related to the actions aimed at mitigating the negative impact on the environment connected with the acquisition and transport of energy, management of municipal and industrial wastes, as well as the impact of the industry on the aquatic and soil environment. This book is dedicated to academics, engineers, and students involved in environmental engineering, who are following the advances in the research on environmental aspects of energy production and waste management.

Introduction to Continuum Mechanics (Hardcover, 4th edition): W.Michael Lai, Erhard Krempl Introduction to Continuum Mechanics (Hardcover, 4th edition)
W.Michael Lai, Erhard Krempl
R2,066 Discovery Miles 20 660 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Continuum Mechanics is a branch of physical mechanics that describes the macroscopic mechanical behavior of solid or fluid materials considered to be continuously distributed. It is fundamental to the fields of civil, mechanical, chemical and bioengineering. This time-tested text has been used for over 35 years to introduce junior and senior-level undergraduate engineering students, as well as graduate students, to the basic principles of continuum mechanics and their applications to real engineering problems. The text begins with a detailed presentation of the coordinate invariant quantity, the tensor, introduced as a linear transformation. This is then followed by the formulation of the kinematics of deformation, large as well as very small, the description of stresses and the basic laws of continuum mechanics. As applications of these laws, the behaviors of certain material idealizations (models) including the elastic, viscous and viscoelastic materials, are presented.

This new edition offers expanded coverage of the subject matter both in terms of details and contents, providing greater flexibility for either a one or two-semester course in either continuum mechanics or elasticity. Although this current edition has expanded the coverage of the subject matter, it nevertheless uses the same approach as that in the earlier editions - that one can cover advanced topics in an elementary way that go from simple to complex, using a wealth of illustrative examples and problems. It is, and will remain, one of the most accessible textbooks on this challenging engineering subject.
Significantly expanded coverage of elasticity in Chapter 5, including solutions of some 3-D problems based on the fundamental potential functions approach.

New section at the end of Chapter 4 devoted to the integral formulation of the field equations

Seven new appendices appear at the end of the relevant chapters to help make each chapter more self-contained

Expanded and improved problem sets providing both intellectual challenges and engineering applications

Symplectic Elasticity (Hardcover): Weian Yao, Wanxie Zhong, Chee Wah Lim Symplectic Elasticity (Hardcover)
Weian Yao, Wanxie Zhong, Chee Wah Lim
R2,856 Discovery Miles 28 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Exact analytical solutions in some areas of solid mechanics, in particular problems in the theory of plates, have long been regarded as bottlenecks in the development of elasticity. In contrast to the traditional solution methodologies, such as Timoshenko's approach in the theory of elasticity for which the main technique is the semi-inverse method, this book presents a new approach based on the Hamiltonian principle and the symplectic duality system where solutions are derived in a rational manner in the symplectic space. Dissimilar to the conventional Euclidean space with one kind of variables, the symplectic space with dual variables thus provides a fundamental breakthrough. A unique feature of this symplectic approach is the classical bending problems in solid mechanics now become eigenvalue problems and the symplectic bending deflection solutions are constituted by expansion of eigenvectors. The classical solutions are subsets of the more general symplectic solutions. This book explains the new solution methodology by discussing plane isotropic elasticity, multiple layered plate, anisotropic elasticity, sectorial plate and thin plate bending problems in detail. A number of existing problems without analytical solutions within the framework of classical approaches are solved analytically using this symplectic approach. Symplectic methodologies can be applied not only to problems in elasticity, but also to other solid mechanics problems. In addition, it can also be extended to various engineering mechanics and mathematical physics fields, such as vibration, wave propagation, control theory, electromagnetism and quantum mechanics.

Gravity's Century - From Einstein's Eclipse to Images of Black Holes (Hardcover): Ron Cowen Gravity's Century - From Einstein's Eclipse to Images of Black Holes (Hardcover)
Ron Cowen
R645 R605 Discovery Miles 6 050 Save R40 (6%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A sweeping account of the century of experimentation that confirmed Einstein's general theory of relativity, bringing to life the science and scientists at the origins of relativity, the development of radio telescopes, the discovery of black holes and quasars, and the still unresolved place of gravity in quantum theory. Albert Einstein did nothing of note on May 29, 1919, yet that is when he became immortal. On that day, astronomer Arthur Eddington and his team observed a solar eclipse and found something extraordinary: gravity bends light, just as Einstein predicted. The finding confirmed the theory of general relativity, fundamentally changing our understanding of space and time. A century later, another group of astronomers is performing a similar experiment on a much larger scale. The Event Horizon Telescope, a globe-spanning array of radio dishes, is examining space surrounding Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way. As Ron Cowen recounts, the foremost goal of the experiment is to determine whether Einstein was right on the details. Gravity lies at the heart of what we don't know about quantum mechanics, but tantalizing possibilities for deeper insight are offered by black holes. By observing starlight wrapping around Sagittarius A*, the telescope will not only provide the first direct view of an event horizon-a black hole's point of no return-but will also enable scientists to test Einstein's theory under the most extreme conditions. Gravity's Century shows how we got from the pivotal observations of the 1919 eclipse to the Event Horizon Telescope, and what is at stake today. Breaking down the physics in clear and approachable language, Cowen makes vivid how the quest to understand gravity is really the quest to comprehend the universe.

The present volume includes most of the material of the invited lectures delivered at the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Morphogenesis through the interplay of nonlinear chemical instabilities and elastic active media" held from 2th to 14th July 2007 at the Institut d'Etudes Scientifiques de Cargese (http: //www.iesc.univ-corse.fr/), in Corsica (France). This traditional place to organize Summer Schools and Workshops in a well equipped secluded location at the border of the Mediterranean sea has, over many years now, earned an increasing deserved reputation. Non-linear dynamics of non equilibrium systems has worked its way into a great number of fields and plays a key role in the understanding of se- organization and emergence phenomena in domains as diverse as chemical reactors, laser physics, fluid dynamics, electronic devices and biological morphogenesis. In the latter case, the viscoelastic properties of tissues are also known to play a key role. The control and formulation of soft responsive or "smart" materials has been a fast growing field of material science, specially in the area of po- mer networks, due to their growing applications in bio-science, chemical sensors, intelligent microfluidic devices, ... . Nature is an important p- vider of active materials whether at the level of tissues or at that of s- cellular structures. As a consequence, the fundamental understanding of the physical mechanisms at play in responsive materials also shines light in the understanding of biological artefacts."
