Tony Hunt's Structures Notebook (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Tony Hunt Tony Hunt's Structures Notebook (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Tony Hunt
R3,901 Discovery Miles 39 010 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The purpose of the Structures Notebook is to explain, in the simplest possible terms, about the structure of 'things', and to demonstrate the fact that everything you see and touch, live in and use, living and man-made, has a structure which is acted upon by natural forces and reacts to these forces according to its form and material. The Structures Notebook was originally written by Tony Hunt as a brief teaching aid for students at the Royal College of Art who had very little, if any, knowledge of physics or structural behaviour. It has now been expanded, and with this second edition, updated, into a more comprehensive book while retaining a simple visual and non-mathematical approach to structures. The book is divided into seven main sections, in a logical sequence, and is written in simple language. Each section, related to its text, has a comprehensive set of hand-drawn sketches which show, as simply as possible, what the text is about. The book is almost totally non-mathematical since the author believes very strongly that structural behaviour can be understood best by diagrams and simple descriptions and that mathematics for the majority of people interested in design is a barrier. The design of structures is a combination of art and science and to achieve the best solution, concept should always come before calculation.

Unified Theory of Reinforced Concrete (Hardcover): Thomas T.C. Hsu Unified Theory of Reinforced Concrete (Hardcover)
Thomas T.C. Hsu
R7,157 Discovery Miles 71 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Reinforced concrete structures are subjected to a complex variety of stresses and strains. The four basic actions are bending, axial load, shear, and torsion. Presently, there is no single comprehensive theory for reinforced concrete structural behavior that addresses all of these basic actions and their interactions. Furthermore, there is little consistency among countries around the world in their building codes, especially in the specifications for shear and torsion. Unified Theory of Reinforced Concrete addresses this serious problem by integrating available information with new research data, developing one unified theory of reinforced concrete behavior that embraces and accounts for all four basic actions and their combinations. The theory is presented in a systematic manner, elucidating its five component models from a pedagogical and historical perspective while emphasizing the fundamental principles of equilibrium, compatibility, and the constitutive laws of materials. The significance of relationships between models and their intrinsic consistencies are emphasized. This theory can serve as the foundation on which to build a universal design code that can be adopted internationally. In addition to frames, the book explains the fundamental concept of the design of wall-type and shell-type structures. Unified Theory of Reinforced Concrete will be an important reference for all engineers involved in the design of concrete structures. The book can also serve well as a text for a graduate course in structural engineering.

Energy Simulation in Building Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Joseph Clarke Energy Simulation in Building Design (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Joseph Clarke
R3,939 Discovery Miles 39 390 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Since the appearance of the first edition of 'Energy Simulation in Building Design', the use of computer-based appraisal tools to solve energy design problems within buildings has grown rapidly. A leading figure in this field, Professor Joseph Clarke has updated his book throughout to reflect these latest developments. The book now includes material on combined thermal/lighting and CFD simulation, advanced glazings, indoor air quality and photovoltaic components. This thorough revision means that the book remains the key text on simulation for architects, building engineering consultants and students of building engineering and environmental design of buildings. The book's purpose is to help architects, mechanical & environmental engineers and energy & facility managers to understand and apply the emerging computer methods for options appraisal at the individual building, estate, city, region and national levels. This is achieved by interspersing theoretical derivations relating to simulation within an evolving description of the built environment as a complex system. The premise is that the effective application of any simulation tool requires a thorough understanding of the domain it addresses.

Nonlinear Seismic Analysis and Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings - Workshop on Nonlinear Seismic Analysis of Reinforced... Nonlinear Seismic Analysis and Design of Reinforced Concrete Buildings - Workshop on Nonlinear Seismic Analysis of Reinforced Concrete Buildings, Bled, Slovenia, Yugoslavia, 13-16 July 1992 (Hardcover)
P. Fajfar, H. Krawinkler
R12,610 Discovery Miles 126 100 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This is a compendium of invited papers focusing on earthquake resistant design of reinforced concrete buildings with an emphasis on: a) energy concepts and damage models in seismic analysis and design; and b) analysis and seismic behaviour of buildings with structural walls. It has long been recognized that energy input, absorption and dissipation are the most fundamental quantities controlling seismic performance. However, to this day, energy concepts have been ignored in earthquake resistant design because of apparent complexities in the quantification of energy demands, capacities and their implementation in the design process. The first part of this text illustrates how energy terms together with cumulative damage models can be utilized to provide quantitiative information useful for damage assessment and design. In the second part papers focus on modelling of the nonlinear static and dynamic response of structures containing walls and propose solution techniques intended to contribute to a more accurate prediction of seismic behaviour of such structures. This work details advances in seismic design and performance assessment of reinforced concrete buildings. It should be a val

Building Adaptation (Hardcover, 2nd edition): James Douglas Building Adaptation (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
James Douglas
R4,421 Discovery Miles 44 210 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

As existing buildings age, nearly half of all construction activity in Britain is related to maintenance, refurbishment and conversions. Building adaptation is an activity that continues to make a significant contribution to the workload of the construction industry. Given its importance to sustainable construction, the proportion of adaptation works in relation to new build is likely to remain substantial for the foreseeable future, especially in the developed parts of the world. Building Adaptation, Second Edition is intended as a primer on the physical changes that can affect older properties. It demonstrates the general principles, techniques, and processes needed when existing buildings must undergo alteration, conversion, extension, improvement, or refurbishment. The publication of the first edition of Building Adaptation reflected the upsurge in refurbishment work. The book quickly established itself as one of the core texts for building surveying students and others on undergraduate and postgraduate built environment courses. This new edition continues to provide a comprehensive introduction to all the key issues relating to the adaptation of buildings. It deals with any work to a building over and above maintenance to change its capacity, function or performance.

Computer Methods in Structural Analysis (Paperback): J.L. Meek Computer Methods in Structural Analysis (Paperback)
J.L. Meek
R4,234 R3,498 Discovery Miles 34 980 Save R736 (17%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This text uses fundamental theorems of structural mechanics to explain the connection between statics of structures and their deflections on the one hand, and the kinematics of structures and their equilibrium on the other. It develops the theory and techniques of finite element and non-linear analysis applicabale to computer software. This text brings a unified approach to the analysis of conventional truss and frame structures and the finite element approximation of the continuum via the priciples of virtual displacements and virtual forces. These principles can be succintly expressed in the form known as the contragredient law. Concepts of elasticity and elasto-plastic constitutive laws are discussed and a broad introduction given to the various approaches used in the finite element method. A treatment is then given for line element structures using both the force and the displacement method, and in the latter case, the theory is extended for non-linear large displacement analysis. Practical means are presented for the calculation of critical loads on such structures. Three chapters are devoted to the finite element method in which continuum thoery, torsion, heat transfer, plate

Prestressed Concrete-Lined Pressure Tunnels - Towards Improved Safety and Economical Design (Paperback): T. D. Y. F. Simanjuntak Prestressed Concrete-Lined Pressure Tunnels - Towards Improved Safety and Economical Design (Paperback)
T. D. Y. F. Simanjuntak
R1,753 Discovery Miles 17 530 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Hydropower can be a source of sustainable energy, provided environmental considerations are taken into account and economic aspects of hydropower design are appropriately addressed. Using concrete-lined pressure tunnels instead of steel pipes may be economically attractive but may also have limitations due to the low tensile strength of concrete. Cracking in concrete tunnel linings can lead to loss of energy production, extensive repairs, and even accidents. One of the techniques available to improve the bearing capacity of pressure tunnels is through prestressing the concrete lining by grouting the circumferential gap between the concrete lining and the rock mass at high pressure. A classical approach to determine the bearing capacity of such tunnels is based on the theory of elasticity, assuming impervious concrete. In this research, a new concept is introduced to assess the effect of seepage on the bearing capacity of pressure tunnels. Also, an innovative approach is proposed to explore the effects of the in-situ stress ratio on the lining performance. Distinction is made based on whether the rock mass behaves as an elasto-plastic isotropic, or elastic anisotropic material. Furthermore, a simplified method is introduced to quantify seepage associated with cracks around the tunnel, which is useful for assessing tunnel stability.

Tall Buildings - Structural Systems and Aerodynamic Form (Hardcover): Mehmet Gunel, Huseyin Ilgin Tall Buildings - Structural Systems and Aerodynamic Form (Hardcover)
Mehmet Gunel, Huseyin Ilgin
R3,916 Discovery Miles 39 160 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The structural challenges of building 800 metres into the sky are substantial, and include several factors which do not affect low-rise construction. This book focusses on these areas specifically to provide the architectural and structural knowledge which must be taken into account in order to design tall buildings successfully. In presenting examples of steel, reinforced concrete, and composite structural systems for such buildings, it is shown that wind load has a very important effect on the architectural and structural design. The aerodynamic approach to tall buildings is considered in this context, as is earthquake induced lateral loading. Case studies of some of the world's most iconic buildings, illustrated with full colour photographs, structural plans and axonometrics, will bring to life the design challenges which they presented to architects and structural engineers. The Empire State Building, the Burj Khalifa, Taipei 101 and the HSB Turning Torso are just a few examples of the buildings whose real-life specifications are used to explain and illustrate core design principles, and their subsequent effect on the finished structure.
