Dynamics and Control of Electrical Drives (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Wach Piotr Dynamics and Control of Electrical Drives (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Wach Piotr
R4,060 Discovery Miles 40 600 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Dynamics is a science concerned with movement and changes. In the most general approach it relates to life processes as well as behavior in nature in rest. It governs small particles, technical objects, conversion of matter and materials but also concerns people, groups of people in their individual and, in particular, social dimension. In dynamics we always have to do with causes or stimuli for motion, the rules of reaction or behavior and its result in the form of trajectory of changes. This book is devoted to dynamics of a wide class of specific but very important objects such as electromechanical systems. This is a very rigorous discipline and has a long tradition, as its theoretical bases were formulated in the first half of the XIX century by d' Alembert, Lagrange, Hamilton, Maxwell and other prominent scientists, but their crucial results were based on previous pioneering research of others such as Copernicus, Galileo, Newton... This book in its theoretical foundations is based on the principle of least action which governs classical as well as relativistic mechanics and electromagnetism and leads to Lagrange's equations which are applied in the book as universal method to construct equations of motion of electromechanical systems. It gives common and coherent grounds to formulate mathematical models for all lumped parameters' electromechanical systems, which are vital in our contemporary industry and civilized everyday life. From these remarks it seems that the book is general and theoretical but in fact it is a very practical one concerning modern electrical drives in a broad sense, including electromechanical energy conversion, induction motor drives, brushless DC drives with a permanent magnet excitation and switched reluctance machines (SRM). And of course their control, which means shaping of their trajectories of motion using modern tools, their designed autonomy in keeping a track according to our programmed expectations. The problems presented in the book are widely illustrated by characteristics, trajectories, dynamic courses all computed by use of developed simulation models throughout the book. There are some classical subjects and the history of the discipline is discussed but finally all modern tools and means are presented and applied. More detailed descriptions follow in abstracts for the particular chapters. The author hopes kind readers will enjoy and profit from reading this book.

Nanofins - Science and Applications (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Navdeep Singh, Debjyoti Banerjee Nanofins - Science and Applications (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Navdeep Singh, Debjyoti Banerjee
R1,582 Discovery Miles 15 820 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nanofins Science and Technology describes the heat transfer effectiveness of polymer coolants and their fundamental interactions with carbon nanotube coatings that act as nanofins. Heat transfer at micro/nano-scales has attracted significant attention in contemporary literature. This has been primarily driven by industrial requirements where significant decrease in the size of electronic devices/chips with concomitant enhancement in the heat flux have caused challenging needs for cooling of these platforms. With quantum effects kicking in, traditional cooling techniques need to be replaced with more effective technologies. A promising technique is to enhance heat transfer by surface texturing using nanoparticle coatings or engineered nanostructures. These nanostructures are termed as nanofins because they augment heat transfer by a combination of surface area enhancement as well as liquid-solid interactions at the molecular scale.

R2,687 Discovery Miles 26 870 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Bimetallic nanoparticles, also called nanoalloys, are at the heart of nanoscience because of their ability to tune together composition and size for specific purposes. By approaching both their physical and chemical properties, Nanoalloys: Synthesis, Structure & Properties provides a comprehensive reference to this research field in nanoscience by addressing the subject from both experimental and theoretical points of view, providing chapters across three main topics: Growth and structural properties Thermodynamics and electronic structure of nanoalloys Magnetic, optic and catalytic properties The growth and elaboration processes which are the necessary and crucial part of any experimental approach are detailed in the first chapter. Three chapters are focused on the widely used characterization techniques sensitive to both the structural arrangements and chemistry of nanoalloys. The electronic structure of nanoalloys is described as a guide of useful concepts and theoretical tools. Chapters covering thermodynamics begin with bulk alloys, going to nanoalloys via surfaces in order to describe chemical order/disorder, segregation and phase transitions in reduced dimension. Finally, the optical, magnetic and catalytic properties are discussed by focusing on nanoparticles formed with one element to track the modifications which occur when forming nanoalloys. The range and detail of Nanoalloys: Synthesis, Structure & Properties makes it an ideal resource for postgraduates and researchers working in the field of nanoscience looking to expand and support their knowledge of nanoalloys.

Femtosecond Laser 3D Micromachining for Microfluidic and Optofluidic Applications (Paperback, 2014 ed.): Koji Sugioka, Ya Cheng Femtosecond Laser 3D Micromachining for Microfluidic and Optofluidic Applications (Paperback, 2014 ed.)
Koji Sugioka, Ya Cheng
R1,730 Discovery Miles 17 300 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Femtosecond lasers opened up new avenue in materials processing due to its unique features of ultrashort pulse width and extremely high peak intensity. One of the most important features of femtosecond laser processing is that strong absorption can be induced even by materials which are transparent to the femtosecond laser beam due to nonlinear multiphoton absorption. The multiphoton absorption allows us to perform not only surface but also three-dimensionally internal microfabrication of transparent materials such as glass. This capability makes it possible to directly fabricate three-dimensional microfluidics, micromechanics, microelectronics and microoptics embedded in the glass. Further, these microcomponents can be easily integrated in a single glass microchip by the simple procedure using the femtosecond laser. Thus, the femtosecond laser processing provides some advantages over conventional methods such as traditional semiconductor processing or soft lithography for fabrication of microfluidic, optofludic and lab-on-a-chip devices and thereby many researches on this topic are currently being carried out. This book presents a comprehensive review on the state of the art and future prospects of femtosecond laser processing for fabrication of microfluidics and optofludics including principle of femtosecond laser processing, detailed fabrication procedures of each microcomponent and practical applications to biochemical analysis.

Ekkard Brinksmeier, Oltmann Riemer, Ralf M. Glabe
R4,219 Discovery Miles 42 190 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

High quality optical components for consumer products made of glass and plastic are mostly fabricated by replication. This highly developed production technology requires several consecutive, well-matched processing steps called a "process chain" covering all steps from mold design, advanced machining and coating of molds, up to the actual replication and final precision measurement of the quality of the optical components. Current market demands for leading edge optical applications require high precision and cost effective parts in large volumes. For meeting these demands it is necessary to develop high quality process chains and moreover, to crosslink all demands and interdependencies within these process chains. The Transregional Collaborative Research Center "Process chains for the replication of complex optical elements" at Bremen, Aachen and Stillwater worked extensively and thoroughly in this field from 2001 to 2012. This volume will present the latest scientific results for the complete process chain giving a profound insight into present-day high-tech production.

Making It to the Forefront - Nanotechnology-A Developing Country Perspective (Paperback, 2012 ed.): Neslihan Aydogan-Duda Making It to the Forefront - Nanotechnology-A Developing Country Perspective (Paperback, 2012 ed.)
Neslihan Aydogan-Duda
R2,623 Discovery Miles 26 230 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

Nanotechnology, as shortly described as the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular scale, is one of the most dynamic and promising industries, receiving a great deal of attention from researchers, business leaders, investors, and policymakers around the world. In Making It to the Forefront, Nesli Aydogan-Duda has assembled a distinguished group of authors to analyze the particular challenges and opportunities of nanotechnology emergence and management in the developing world. In so doing, they address the issues from several angles, ranging from cultural issues to capital markets, industrial clusters to government policy and legal structure. Drawing from in-depth research and case studies in Turkey, Latin America, India, China, and Iran, and a comparison with the development of the industry in the United states, the authors present a cross-cultural approach, with particular emphasis on the strategic nature of the nanotechnology industry for economic development, consumer welfare, and homeland security. Among the topics they consider are the importance of knowledge transfer from universities to the market and, more generally, the interface between science and its commercialization-and the institutional infrastructure that is necessary to maximize the potential of science and technology. In doing so, the authors provide unprecedented theoretical and empirical contributions to the study of nanotechnology, and, more generally, insight into the complex business, political, and cultural environment that must be established in order for such an industry to thrive in the context of a developing country.

Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980): Stinchcomb Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing (Paperback, Softcover reprint of the original 1st ed. 1980)
Stinchcomb
R1,468 Discovery Miles 14 680 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The synergism of the mechanics of nondestructive testing and the mechanics of materials response has great potential value in an era of rapid development of new materials and new applications for con ventional materials. The two areas are closely related and an advance in one area often leads to an advance in the other. As our understanding of basic principles increases, nondestructive testing is outgrowing the image of "black box techniques" and is rapidly becoming a legitimate technical area of science and engineering. At the present time, however, an understanding of the mechanics of nondestructive testing is lagging behind other advances in the field. The key to further development in the mechanics of nondestructive testing lies in the mechanics of the phenomena or response being investigated - a better understanding of materials response suggests better nondestructive test methods to investigate the response which, in turn, advances our understanding of materials response, and so on. With this approach in mind, the Materials Response Group of the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University hosted a Conference on the Mechanics of Nondestructive Testing on September 10 through 12, 1980. Sponsors of the conference were the Army Research Office, the National Science Foundation, and the Engineering Science and Mechanics Department."

Microsystems Dynamics (Paperback, 2011 ed.): Vytautas Ostasevicius, Rolanas Dauksevicius Microsystems Dynamics (Paperback, 2011 ed.)
Vytautas Ostasevicius, Rolanas Dauksevicius
R2,634 Discovery Miles 26 340 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

In recent years microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have emerged as a new technology with enormous application potential. MEMS manufacturing techniques are essentially the same as those used in the semiconductor industry, therefore they can be produced in large quantities at low cost. The added benefits of lightweight, miniature size and low energy consumption make MEMS commercialization very attractive. Modeling and simulation is an indispensable tool in the process of studying these new dynamic phenomena, development of new microdevices and improvement of the existing designs. MEMS technology is inherently multidisciplinary since operation of microdevices involves interaction of several energy domains of different physical nature, for example, mechanical, fluidic and electric forces. Dynamic behavior of contact-type electrostatic microactuators, such as a microswitches, is determined by nonlinear fluidic-structural, electrostatic-structural and vibro-impact interactions. The latter is particularly important: Therefore it is crucial to develop accurate computational models for numerical analysis of the aforementioned interactions in order to better understand coupled-field effects, study important system dynamic characteristics and thereby formulate guidelines for the development of more reliable microdevices with enhanced performance, reliability and functionality.
