How can a Martial Art enhance the quality of life? The Heart of Taekwondo (Korean martial art of self-defense) incorporates the themes, Patterns, Power and Promotion. Patterns (sets of physical exercises) must be performed with power in order to achieve promotion. For generations this criterion has remained at the 'Heart of Taekwondo' practice. The arrangement of 'Taegeuk' and 'Black Belt' patterns are illustrated with over 450 photographs. Taekwondo offers practitioners the opportunity to enjoy an excellent quality of life and, to live longer. The benefits of physical exercise, appropriate dietary intake and rest are discussed with the aid of charts and diagrams. The Author, Grandmaster Mark Biddlecombe, one of the highest ranked Taekwondo Instructors in the United Kingdom, shares his experiences, thoughts and ideas. Subjective and objective data are used to explain how Taekwondo has transformed from part of Korea's culture to one of the most popular martial arts in the world, and an Olympic Sport. The Heart of Taekwondo provides information for the novice and advanced practitioner. Within the book, subjects that have never before been written about have been discussed. Information regarding Taekwondo philosophy and specific techniques that have historically been shrouded in mystery is revealed. The secrets are out 'Eat well, Move more, Rest well, Live longer'.
For the first time in print, the mysterious transformation process of Standing Meditation is revealed. Filled with tips and tricks to help get more out of training than most practitioners ever thought possible, this book contains a number of concepts and techniques presented for the first time in English. Drawing upon his 7th generation lineage in Chinese Medicine and using straightforward and simple language, Mr. Cohen fills in the missing pieces of the puzzle formerly absent in Zhan Zhuang literature. These include such elements as special masterpoints to relax and release large sections of the body, methods which rapidly create whole-body linkage for any posture; techniques for working with light in the higher energy centers, mechanisms to correct many crucial health problems and special training to develop truly effective martial power. A fast track for beginners. Highly recommended for seasoned practitioners. Take your Zhan Zhuang and Tai Chi to the next level.
Every action in Martial Arts and self defense aims at discovering the opponents' weak points, exploiting them and finally disabling him/her without injury or to bring him/her under control. Although our knowledge about the build-up of the human body has multiplied, in many books on the subject of Martial Arts an explanation concerning the effect of various striking and pressure techniques has reduced to mentioning merely "causes pain, paralyzes, death". Explanations are missing or are left in the realm of the esoteric. However it would be appreciated very much if the followers of Martial Arts delved more into the possible medical outcome of their actions.

Changing trends throughout the judo world, with the movement of strenghths predominately shifting away from Japan towards China, Korea and many of the former satelite states of the old Soviet Union, such places as Georgia the Ukrane and many others. The book is not meant to be crytical, however it questions Britains past performances at the Olympic Games, the development programme in place with issues, who should take the glory or blame for results. On a possitive note the book looks at all the hard work the governing bodies have done to advance judo to where it is today. As in the name, Young Gladiators suggests fighters, the book is intended for the young aspireing contest players who have taken this path in the hope one day they will be the champion. The technical side of the book looks in depth at the skills of both Tachi Waza and Ne Waza, and although contest orientated it should be easily understood by all judoka at any level.

This is the first complete training manual for Systema, the Russian Martial Art developed for use by the elite ex-Soviet Special Operation Units of Spetsnaz. Nowhere else has the previously often classified material found in these pages been collated in one place for civilian use. Many personal anecdotes and experiences throughout the book make for an entertaining, humorous and informative read. In the typically unorthodox fashion of Systema itself, this is no dry text book but an easy-to-use teaching aid and a very human study. Includes previously classified scientific information that relates to the underlying principles of military and sports science. The latest scientific research on supposedly "superhuman abilities" and how to easily develop these in simple and effective ways. Learn how to perform three of the "mini superpowers" in no more than 30 minutes each, to satisfy yourself that the concepts in this book are NOT hype but just pure science, repeatable and learnable by anyone willing to do the work. Learn the more powerful abilities often considered "impossible" by most hard-core martial artists until these are performed on them. Easy to follow explanations on the basic principles of military sports science and how they relate to real-life survival of combat. Useful for anyone involved not just in martial arts, but any sports in general and, in fact, most human activities, as the principles presented are applicable not just to Systema but to any practical human endeavour."
Nei Gong: The Authentic Classic, (Nei Gong Zhen Chuan) is an obscure text of unknown origin, yet it stands alone as the definitive text on internal energy and the generation of internal power. Hand copied, and passed from teacher to student, it is one of the "secret transmissions" of Chinese martial arts. Nei Gong: The Authentic Classic, is a practical manual on internal energy development and its fundamental importance in the martial arts and fa jin (emitting force). It draws heavily on Daoist meditation and alchemical practices which are said to promote health and longevity. The text is divided into four sections: 1. Nei Gong Jing (Internal Energy Classic); 2. Na Gua Jing (Received Trigram Classic); 3. Shen Yun Jing (Transported Spirit Classic); 4. Di Long Jing (Earth Dragon Classic), which are meant to be read in order. In this way the reader is guided step by step through the details of Nei Gong practice, and in the Di Long Jing, its application to self-defense. Translated by a team of experts, the text is accompanied by extensive footnotes and diagrams that clarify the more obscure passages which otherwise pre-suppose a knowledge of Daoist texts and imagery from the I-Ching (Book of Changes). The appendices further explicate the relationship of Nei Gong: The Authentic Classic to the internal martial art Xing Yi Quan.

Based on unique access to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and its rival organizations, "Blood in the Cage" peers through the chain-link Octagon into the frighteningly seductive world of mixed martial arts, which has exploded in popularity despite resistance. Wertheim focuses on Pat Miletich, who runs the most famous MMA training school in the world. Single-handedly Miletich has transformed a gritty town on the Mississippi into an unlikely hotbed for his sport. He has also transformed many an average Joe into a walking weapon of destruction. Wertheim intertwines Miletich's own life story, by turns tragic and triumphant, with the larger story of the unholy rise of the UFC, from its controversial, back alley roots to the fastest-growing sports enterprise in America. "Blood in the Cage" takes readers behind the scenes, right down to the mat, from a punch in the kidney to the ping of the cash register, as Wertheim brilliantly exposes the no-holds-barred reality of the blood sport for a new generation.
A witty and compelling journey into the enigmatic sport of
judo--the culture, drama, history, and practice.
Chivalry is a flower no less indigenous to the soil of Japan than its emblem, the cherry blossom; nor is it a dried-up specimen of an antique virtue preserved in the herbarium of our history. It is still a living object of power and beauty among us; and if it assumes no tangible shape or form, it not the less scents the moral atmosphere, and makes us aware that we are still under its potent spell. The conditions of society which brought it forth and nourished it have long disappeared; but as those far-off stars which once were and are not, still continue to shed their rays upon us, so the light of chivalry, which was a child of feudalism, still illuminates our moral path, surviving its mother institution. It is a pleasure to me to reflect upon this subject in the language of Burke, who uttered the well-known touching eulogy over the neglected bier of its European prototype. |
