OB-GYN Pathology for the Clinician - A Practical Review with Clinical Correlations (Hardcover): Debra S. Heller OB-GYN Pathology for the Clinician - A Practical Review with Clinical Correlations (Hardcover)
Debra S. Heller
R3,407 Discovery Miles 34 070 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book fills the gap in understanding of pathology of the female genital tract that is often understated during training. Normal histology and pathology of abnormal conditions are covered for the lower and upper genital tract, in a concise manner with over 200 color illustrations. Topics include this covers inflammatory diseases, iatrogenic conditions, changes associated with menopause, and benign and malignant neoplasms. This text also address adjunctive testing such as molecular diagnostics and immunohistochemistry staining. The text is concise and practical with a liberal use of bullet points, and it includes clinicopathologic correlations. Breakout tables in each chapter cover information the clinician should provide the pathologist to get the most useful report, as well as pathology issues and challenges that may result in a report less specific than the clinician is expecting. Written by board certified experts, this book is the ultimate resource for gynecological pathologists, obstetrics, OB/GYN physicians, and gynecology practitioners.

On Biomineralization (Hardcover): Heinz A. Lowenstam, Stephen Weiner On Biomineralization (Hardcover)
Heinz A. Lowenstam, Stephen Weiner
R5,946 Discovery Miles 59 460 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A large variety of organisms - from bacteria to man - form minerals. Skeletons, teeth, spicules, spines, shells, darts, and granules are all mineral-containing tissues. Why, where, and how these minerals form are the central questions addressed in this book. These questions have become important in many fields. Preserved fossils are used to interpret ancient climates, changes in chemical composition of the oceans, or to date geological and archaeological deposits and artefacts. Materials scientists investigate mineralized tissues to try to determine the design principles used by organisms to form strong materials, and many medical problems are associated with normal and pathological mineralization. Heinz Lowenstam, the pioneering researcher in biomineralization, and his former student Stephen Weiner discuss the basic principles of mineral formation by organisms, and compare the various mineralization processes. Reference tables list all known cases in which organisms form minerals.

Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Wolfgang Walz Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Wolfgang Walz
R2,677 Discovery Miles 26 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The human brain represents about 2% of the body weight, yet it accounts for approximately 20% of aerobic metabolism. This high dependency on energy-consuming processes is mainly caused by the active transport of ions, which is necessary to compensate for the transmembrane ion currents that are part ofthe complex signaling processes in the brain. Ninety-five percent ofthe brain's ATP is derived from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Since that organ' s storage capacity for oxygen is minimal, any interruption of oxygen delivery to brain cells willlead to changes in membrane excitability and, there fore, to disruption of neuronal signaling within seconds. It seems that mamma lian brain is especially vulnerable to such an interruption, since oxygen deprivation leads to activation of ion channel mechanisms in neurons that impair their communications. Thus, the function of the brain as a coordinator of vital homeostatic reflexes, and complex body reactions to external challenges, depends critically on the rate of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. Oxygen delivery depends on two variables described in the Fick relation ship: volume flow rate ofblood and the arterial oxygen content. A reduction in either of these two variables will have serious effects on vital brain func tions. Reduction of arterial blood flow to the brain can be caused by cardiac arrest, shock, carotid occlusion, Of hypotension (global ischemia). Oxygen content is progressively decreased in asphyxia (including drowning)."

Pathology of Sudden Cardiac Death - An Illustrated Guide (Hardcover): BS Edwards Pathology of Sudden Cardiac Death - An Illustrated Guide (Hardcover)
BS Edwards
R2,785 Discovery Miles 27 850 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Sudden cardiac death represents a highly heterogeneous group of cardiovascular disorders. While some may initially think of sudden death as primarily an arrhythmogenic event, this actually represents the minority of cases of sudden cardiac death. In the vast majority of cases, there is an underlying anatomic disorder of the cardiovascular system responsible for the ultimate hemodynamic collapse known as sudden cardiac death. This book will provide an atlas type review of ischemic and non-ischemic etiologies of sudden cardiac death. Beyond the atlas, however, will be a "clinical pathologic correlation" for each described disorder providing practicing clinicians with practical information to facilitate proper diagnosis and treatment. While an increasing array of noninvasive diagnostic tools continue to develop, the sad fact remains that many of the physicians and operators of these new diagnostic modalities have never actually seen specimens which demonstrate the fundamental pathologic abnormalities. This ability to see first hand the underlying pathology creates an opportunity to advance the science and enhance ones understanding of these disease processes. There is not a comprehensive text on this subject on the market today which provides clinical and patholigical material in such a comprehensive manner.

Rapid evolution of technical advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, "smart" algorithms, databases, and system integration paves the way for new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. These breakthroughs permit easy-to-use, high-sensitivity imaging that can address key issues of diagnostic specificity and engender a new level of diagnostic standardization, thus enabling the even wider use of infrared imaging as a viable, non-invasive, lower-cost, safe and accessible first-line detection modality. Edited by the inventor of the MedATR concept that leads to the first IR-CAD for the early detection of breast cancer, Medical Infrared Imaging presents many of the new ideas, concepts, and technologies that are key to the wider acceptance of infrared imaging as a revolutionary new standard. Beginning with the worldwide advances and their medical applications from a historical perspective, the book provides detailed and comprehensive information on the technology and hardware resulting from these innovative breakthroughs that will make currently contributory infrared information even more pertinent. The book covers the physics and physiological basis of thermal imaging, and such cutting-edge concepts as: dynamic thermal imaging, thermal tomography, the important role of infrared in a multi-modality imaging setting, and novel processing techniques for the early detection of breast cancer. A significant portion of the book introduces new applications such as biometric facial recognition and the clinical use and quantification of the TAU technique which uses functional imaging to determine the relevance, the stage, and the progression of diseases. Effective and reproducible results are crucial and the book emphasizes the importance of standardization, calibration, and protocols. Finally, the editor includes chapters on the use of databases for storage and retrieval of images and the ethical obligations of infrared research and clinical practice. As a comprehensive state-of-the-science and indication of future directions, Medical Infrared Imaging provides the medical and biomedical engineering communities with the tools to fully utilize and further advance the applications of infrared imaging.
