Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Wolfgang Walz Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Wolfgang Walz
R2,677 Discovery Miles 26 770 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

The human brain represents about 2% of the body weight, yet it accounts for approximately 20% of aerobic metabolism. This high dependency on energy-consuming processes is mainly caused by the active transport of ions, which is necessary to compensate for the transmembrane ion currents that are part ofthe complex signaling processes in the brain. Ninety-five percent ofthe brain's ATP is derived from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Since that organ' s storage capacity for oxygen is minimal, any interruption of oxygen delivery to brain cells willlead to changes in membrane excitability and, there fore, to disruption of neuronal signaling within seconds. It seems that mamma lian brain is especially vulnerable to such an interruption, since oxygen deprivation leads to activation of ion channel mechanisms in neurons that impair their communications. Thus, the function of the brain as a coordinator of vital homeostatic reflexes, and complex body reactions to external challenges, depends critically on the rate of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. Oxygen delivery depends on two variables described in the Fick relation ship: volume flow rate ofblood and the arterial oxygen content. A reduction in either of these two variables will have serious effects on vital brain func tions. Reduction of arterial blood flow to the brain can be caused by cardiac arrest, shock, carotid occlusion, Of hypotension (global ischemia). Oxygen content is progressively decreased in asphyxia (including drowning)."

The Hospital Autopsy - A Manual of Fundamental Autopsy Practice, Third Edition (Hardcover, 3rd edition): Julian Burton, Guy... The Hospital Autopsy - A Manual of Fundamental Autopsy Practice, Third Edition (Hardcover, 3rd edition)
Julian Burton, Guy Rutty
R5,373 Discovery Miles 53 730 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The autopsy is a central component of postgraduate training in pathology and remains an important part of medical practice today. Pathologists are now expected to possess a higher level of knowledge and understanding of the autopsy, the law surrounding it, and its clinical value, in an increasingly scrutinized and legislated environment. Autopsy practice can no longer be viewed in the absence of external contextual issues: it is vital that pathologists have solid grounding not only in standard technique, but also in such matters as personal health and safety to obtaining informed family consent, before undertaking an autopsy procedure. This new and revised edition of The Hospital Autopsy presents a clear and systematic approach to safe and effective modern autopsy practice. Like the extremely popular second edition, it begins by discussing issues of consent and mortuary design before going on to comprehensively cover external examination, evisceration, dissection of internal organs, and report writing. In this edition, new chapters have been added on the radiological autopsy, religious attitudes to autopsy, and the implications of high-risk infections for autopsy practice. Specialist techniques are covered in depth, and chapters are devoted to complex issues including perinatal autopsies, maternal deaths, and neuropathological examinations. The Hospital Autopsy, Third Edition, is sure to be an indispensable resource for pathologists in training, as well as a useful refresher for practicing pathologists and autopsy technicians.

Medical Infrared Imaging (Hardcover): Nicholas A. Diakides, Joseph D. Bronzino Medical Infrared Imaging (Hardcover)
Nicholas A. Diakides, Joseph D. Bronzino
R4,951 Discovery Miles 49 510 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Rapid evolution of technical advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, "smart" algorithms, databases, and system integration paves the way for new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. These breakthroughs permit easy-to-use, high-sensitivity imaging that can address key issues of diagnostic specificity and engender a new level of diagnostic standardization, thus enabling the even wider use of infrared imaging as a viable, non-invasive, lower-cost, safe and accessible first-line detection modality. Edited by the inventor of the MedATR concept that leads to the first IR-CAD for the early detection of breast cancer, Medical Infrared Imaging presents many of the new ideas, concepts, and technologies that are key to the wider acceptance of infrared imaging as a revolutionary new standard. Beginning with the worldwide advances and their medical applications from a historical perspective, the book provides detailed and comprehensive information on the technology and hardware resulting from these innovative breakthroughs that will make currently contributory infrared information even more pertinent. The book covers the physics and physiological basis of thermal imaging, and such cutting-edge concepts as: dynamic thermal imaging, thermal tomography, the important role of infrared in a multi-modality imaging setting, and novel processing techniques for the early detection of breast cancer. A significant portion of the book introduces new applications such as biometric facial recognition and the clinical use and quantification of the TAU technique which uses functional imaging to determine the relevance, the stage, and the progression of diseases. Effective and reproducible results are crucial and the book emphasizes the importance of standardization, calibration, and protocols. Finally, the editor includes chapters on the use of databases for storage and retrieval of images and the ethical obligations of infrared research and clinical practice. As a comprehensive state-of-the-science and indication of future directions, Medical Infrared Imaging provides the medical and biomedical engineering communities with the tools to fully utilize and further advance the applications of infrared imaging.

Biopsy Pathology in Colorectal Disease, 2Ed (Hardcover, 2nd edition): Ian Talbot, Ashley Price, Manuel Salto-Tellez Biopsy Pathology in Colorectal Disease, 2Ed (Hardcover, 2nd edition)
Ian Talbot, Ashley Price, Manuel Salto-Tellez
R6,375 Discovery Miles 63 750 Ships in 9 - 17 working days

Biopsy Pathology in Colorectal Disease shows how the practising pathologist can extract the maximum of diagnostic value from biopsies of the colon, rectum, and anus. With the advances in colonoscopic mucosal biopsy techniques these are amongst the most frequently encountered specimens in hospital histopathology departments. This new edition provides practising pathologists and those in allied disciplines with a thorough guide to the diagnosis of colorectal conditions, both common and rare, and offers expert guidance in the handling of biopsy specimens. The most valuable information for diagnositc interpretation of the variuos types of inflammatory disease is presented clearly and succinctly, minimizing the use of non-diagnostic terms such as 'non-specific colitis.' Optimal ways of handling and examining polyps, the assessment of biopsies in motility disorders and the interpretation of biopsies of anal lesions are described. A rationale classification and practical approach to dysplasia is presented. The early chapters describe how to recognize the many different features, both normal and abnormal, which can be regarded as signposts to diagnosis. The significance of these diagnostic signposts is briefly described and cross referenced to later chapters, in which the histological features of the specific diseases are covered in greater depth.
