Autoimmune Reactions (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Sudhir Paul Autoimmune Reactions (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Sudhir Paul
R4,363 Discovery Miles 43 630 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Autoimmune Reactions tackles fundamental questions about how the immune system can destroy invading microbial pathogens without causing damage to itself and other "self" systems. The authoritative experts writing here explore the mechanistic aspects of such autoimmune diseases as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, and autoimmune thyroid disease, and where possible delineate how malfunctioning immunological mechanisms can lead to clinical symptoms. They also discusses possible general mechanisms of autoimmune disease-e.g., molecular mimicry and dysfunctional antigen presentation-and their current limitations as unifying explanations of the diseases described. The book illustrates the type of thinking and research that should eventually permit development of palliatives and cures for autoimmune diseases.

Flow Cytometry in Neoplastic Hematology - Morphologic-Immunophenotypic-Genetic Correlation (Hardcover, 4th edition): Wojciech... Flow Cytometry in Neoplastic Hematology - Morphologic-Immunophenotypic-Genetic Correlation (Hardcover, 4th edition)
Wojciech Gorczyca
R4,378 Discovery Miles 43 780 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This fourth edition presents an updated and expanded text and illustrations to reflect continued morphologic, immunophenotypic, and especially molecular advances in the field of neoplastic hematology, mostly due to the rapidly expanding application of next-generation sequencing. Those advances not only allow a more reliable diagnosis of the majority of tumors and identification of early changes such as monoclonal B-cell lymphocytosis or clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP), but also in many cases identify mutations or phenotypic changes in tumors that can be targeted by mutation-specific or antigen-specific drugs. This edition incorporates the updated WHO classification of hematopoietic tumors and new immunophenotypic and molecular markers to provide a thorough pathologic overview of hematologic neoplasms while focusing on flow cytometric features. Special emphasis has been put on hematological neoplasms with crucial clinical significance such as acute promyelocytic leukemia, other acute leukemias, and difficult areas in flow cytometry. Flow cytometric features in AML, MDS, CMML, CLL and measurable residual disease were significantly expanded. There are many new comparative tables, illustrations, and diagrams of algorithmic approaches.

Handbook of Pathology and Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease (Hardcover, 2002 ed.): Stephen M. Factor, Maria A.... Handbook of Pathology and Pathophysiology of Cardiovascular Disease (Hardcover, 2002 ed.)
Stephen M. Factor, Maria A. Lamberti-Abadi, Jacobo Abadi
R6,331 Discovery Miles 63 310 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autopsy derives from the greek word autopsia, which means act of seeing with one's own eyes. It remains the most objective and accurate method to understand human. disease. Unfortunately, the volume of autopsies in teaching hospitals has decreased dramatically over the past years. The crucial factors that account for this are the recent progress and development of new technologies, especially in diagnostic imaging, immunology, cell biology and genetics. Additionally, the perpetual fear of legal liability by physicians accounts for its further decline. Consequently, physicians and medical students are engaged in fewer autopsies and are not reaping the rich educational rewards that accompany these examinations. The purpose of the autopsy is not only to establish the cause of death, but also to determine the nature and course of the disease process. Our goal with this book is to emphasize the importance of the post-mortem exam and the correlation between pathologic material and clinical data by analyzing actual cases with problem-based methodology. The focus of this handbook is on cardiovascular disease, and when appropriate, other disease categories are included if they have an impact on cardiovascular function. The approach is more than the usual clinico-pathological correlation. Rather, we attempt to present the material from the perspective of the autopsy table. We use the clinical data as the initial framework and the autopsy findings to develop a true understanding of the disease and the associated pathophysiology of the condition.

Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.): Wolfgang Walz Cerebral Ischemia - Molecular and Cellular Pathophysiology (Hardcover, 1999 ed.)
Wolfgang Walz
R2,815 Discovery Miles 28 150 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The human brain represents about 2% of the body weight, yet it accounts for approximately 20% of aerobic metabolism. This high dependency on energy-consuming processes is mainly caused by the active transport of ions, which is necessary to compensate for the transmembrane ion currents that are part ofthe complex signaling processes in the brain. Ninety-five percent ofthe brain's ATP is derived from mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Since that organ' s storage capacity for oxygen is minimal, any interruption of oxygen delivery to brain cells willlead to changes in membrane excitability and, there fore, to disruption of neuronal signaling within seconds. It seems that mamma lian brain is especially vulnerable to such an interruption, since oxygen deprivation leads to activation of ion channel mechanisms in neurons that impair their communications. Thus, the function of the brain as a coordinator of vital homeostatic reflexes, and complex body reactions to external challenges, depends critically on the rate of oxygen delivery and oxygen consumption. Oxygen delivery depends on two variables described in the Fick relation ship: volume flow rate ofblood and the arterial oxygen content. A reduction in either of these two variables will have serious effects on vital brain func tions. Reduction of arterial blood flow to the brain can be caused by cardiac arrest, shock, carotid occlusion, Of hypotension (global ischemia). Oxygen content is progressively decreased in asphyxia (including drowning)."

This book provides a much needed systematic account of dopamine as an endocrine and autocrine/paracrine hormone and fills a major gap in the overall understanding of the production, distribution and actions of this very important molecule. Key Features: Explores the many different faces of dopamine as autocrine, paracrine and endocrine molecule Documents the adverse effects of antipsychotics on dopamine functions Reviews the many ways dopamine affects the cardiovascular, renal and reproductive systems Provides updates on receptor oligomerization and signaling Examines the role of dopamine in tumorigenesis Related Titles Jones, S. ed. Rapid evolution of technical advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, "smart" algorithms, databases, and system integration paves the way for new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. These breakthroughs permit easy-to-use, high-sensitivity imaging that can address key issues of diagnostic specificity and engender a new level of diagnostic standardization, thus enabling the even wider use of infrared imaging as a viable, non-invasive, lower-cost, safe and accessible first-line detection modality. Edited by the inventor of the MedATR concept that leads to the first IR-CAD for the early detection of breast cancer, Medical Infrared Imaging presents many of the new ideas, concepts, and technologies that are key to the wider acceptance of infrared imaging as a revolutionary new standard. Beginning with the worldwide advances and their medical applications from a historical perspective, the book provides detailed and comprehensive information on the technology and hardware resulting from these innovative breakthroughs that will make currently contributory infrared information even more pertinent. The book covers the physics and physiological basis of thermal imaging, and such cutting-edge concepts as: dynamic thermal imaging, thermal tomography, the important role of infrared in a multi-modality imaging setting, and novel processing techniques for the early detection of breast cancer. A significant portion of the book introduces new applications such as biometric facial recognition and the clinical use and quantification of the TAU technique which uses functional imaging to determine the relevance, the stage, and the progression of diseases. Effective and reproducible results are crucial and the book emphasizes the importance of standardization, calibration, and protocols. Finally, the editor includes chapters on the use of databases for storage and retrieval of images and the ethical obligations of infrared research and clinical practice. As a comprehensive state-of-the-science and indication of future directions, Medical Infrared Imaging provides the medical and biomedical engineering communities with the tools to fully utilize and further advance the applications of infrared imaging.
