Diagnostic Function Tests in Chemical Pathology (Hardcover, 1989 ed.): P.T. Lascelles, D. Donaldson Diagnostic Function Tests in Chemical Pathology (Hardcover, 1989 ed.)
P.T. Lascelles, D. Donaldson
R2,774 Discovery Miles 27 740 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

This book is written for hospital doctors, nurses, biochemists, medi cal laboratory scientific officers and phlebotomists involved with the biochemical investigation of patients. It is hoped, also, that general practitioners and medical students will find it of help. Whilst the vast majority of biochemical tests assess the level of constituents in blood and urine at a given point in time, an impor tant additional parameter is the assessment of physiological reserve function by means of loading tests, prOlonged fasting, exercise and clearance studies. The protocol and interpretation of response of each of these stress tests form the main basis of the text. An attempt has been made to be reasonably comprehensive in the range of tests described; hence, not only have some rather older ones been re tained, but also some very recently introduced ones included. It is appreciated that practice varies widely from laboratory to labora tory with respect to protocol, sample collection, methodology and quotation of reference ranges, and no doubt also from clinician to clinician, particularly regarding interpretation of results. In paedi atric work, micromethods will demand much smaller volumes of blood than those stated here, which relate generally to adult medi cine. The account, therefore, must be seen as a guide to practice rather than as a recipe; it is in no wayan attempt to standardise procedures, which depend on the local requirements."

Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities - A Case-Study Approach (Hardcover): Susan Ettinger Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and its Comorbidities - A Case-Study Approach (Hardcover)
Susan Ettinger
R1,860 Discovery Miles 18 600 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Nutritional Pathophysiology of Obesity and Its Comorbidities: A Case-Study Approach challenges students and practitioners to understand the role of nutrients within the pathophysiology and development of disease, specifically those diseases which develop as a result of obesity. Through a case-based approach, the author presents complex clinical scenarios that require multiple treatment strategies, including targeted diet modification as an adjuvant to medical therapy. The book is divided into 9 modules and 5 appendices each of which covers aspects of obesity and its comorbidities. Within each module, a case is detailed with relevant history, laboratory and physical data, and follow-up information. Each case is followed by a resource section which delineates current understanding of the pathophysiology of the condition, as well as the actions of nutrients and food components shown to modify these processes. A "further readings" section cites current supporting clinical and basic literature as well as published guidelines.

Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery (Hardcover): J.D. Pickard, V. V. Dolenc, J. Lobo Antunes, H.-J. Reulen, M.... Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery (Hardcover)
J.D. Pickard, V. V. Dolenc, J. Lobo Antunes, H.-J. Reulen, M. Sindou, …
R4,056 Discovery Miles 40 560 Ships in 18 - 22 working days

As an addition to the European postgraduate training system for young neurosurgeons, we began to publish in 1974 this series of Advances and Technical Standards in Neurosurgery which was later sponsored by the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies. This series was first discussed in 1972 at a combined meeting of the Italian and German Neurosurgical Societies in Taormina, the founding fathers of the series being Jean Brihaye, Bernard Pertuiset, Fritz Loew and Hugo Krayenbuhl. Thus were established the principles of European co operation which have been born from the European spirit, flourished in the European Association, and have been associated throughout with this senes. The fact that the English language is now the international medium for communication at European scientific conferences is a great asset in terms of mutual understanding. Therefore we have decided to publish all contri butions in English, regardless of the native language of the authors. All contributions are submitted to the entire editorial board before publication of any volume for scrutiny and suggestions for revision. Our series is not intended to compete with the publications of original scientific papers in other neurosurgical journals. Our intention is, rather, to present fields of neurosurgery and related areas in which important recent advances have been made. The contributions are written by specialists in the given fields and constitute the first part of each volume.

Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging - Volume 10 (Hardcover): M. A. Hayat Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging - Volume 10 (Hardcover)
M. A. Hayat
R3,545 Discovery Miles 35 450 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Autophagy: Cancer, Other Pathologies, Inflammation, Immunity, Infection, and Aging, Volume 10 offer a valuable guide to both cellular processes, while encouraging researchers to explore their potentially important connections. Autophagy serves to maintain healthy cells, tissues, and organs, but also promotes cancer survival and growth of established tumors. Impaired or deregulated autophagy can also contribute to disease pathogenesis. This is the tenth volume of the multivolume series that discusses, in detail, almost all aspects of the autophagy machinery in the context of health, cancer, and other pathologies. Autophagy maintains homeostasis during starvation or stress conditions by balancing the synthesis of cellular components and their deregulation by autophagy. Volume 10 of the Autophagy series discusses the role of a novel binuclear palladacycle complex that inhibits melanoma growth through apoptosis and autophagy.

Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat (Hardcover): George A Parker, Catherine A. Picut Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat (Hardcover)
George A Parker, Catherine A. Picut
R4,048 Discovery Miles 40 480 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Atlas of Histology of the Juvenile Rat should be of interest to toxicologic pathologists, toxicologists, and other biological scientists who are interested in the histomorphology of juvenile rats. For several decades the laboratory rat has been used extensively in nonclinical toxicology studies designed to detect potential human toxicity of drugs, agrochemicals, industrial chemicals, and environmental hazards. These studies traditionally have involved young adult rats that are 8-10 weeks of age as studies are started. It is becoming increasingly apparent that children and young animals may have different responses to drug/chemical exposures, therefore, regulatory agencies are emphasizing toxicology studies in juvenile animals. While the histologic features of organs from young adult and aged laboratory rats are well known, less is known about the histologic features of organs from juvenile rats. Final histologic maturity of many organs is achieved postnatally, thus immature histologic features must be distinguished from chemical- or drug-related effects. While this postnatal organ development is known to exist as a general concept, detailed information regarding postnatal histologic development is not readily available. The Atlas includes organs that are typically sampled in nonclinical toxicology studies and presents the histologic features at weekly intervals, starting at birth and extending through postnatal day 42.
